The Nexus 4 Does Have LTE, It’s Just Not Switched On - Nexus 4 General

Following that iFixit teardown of the Nexus 4, it looks like LG and Google did kit out their new flagship with LTE after all—at least, there's a Qualcomm multi-band LTE chip in there—it's just not active. But why whack in a 4G chip and not bother to use it?
There are a couple of theories. The first is network restriction: perhaps one or more mobile carriers have called dibs on an LTE-equipped version to be "released" at a later date. Another theory, as suggested by Ars Technica is that LG's just left the chip in there as a throw over from the Optimus G, on which the Nexus 4 is based, to reduce manufacturing streams. That's possible, but why put a chip in there that costs you extra cash if you weren't going to use it?
On the bright side, perhaps now we'll have a reason for people to actually root stock Android. Maybe, just maybe, someone will be able to activate that dormant LTE chip and gift the Nexus 4 with 4G. That really would make Google's flagship absolutely killer. (Update: As eagle-eyed readers have pointed out, an LTE chip is of limited use without an LTE radio. Maybe someone can hack that together, too...?)[iFixit via Ars Technica]

Rant, rage, anger!!!

Ok...time for ranting...
WTF, Google!? I have been waiting for months for the Note II to be released, then caught wind of the Nexus 4. "Ooo...new Nexus phone...Snapdragon Pro...mmm...might have to wait..." I thought.
It is leaked to hell-n-back but there's one thing I don't remember seeing in all the leaks...
NO LTE!!!!!
WTF, Google/LG!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
You trying to be the iPhail 4S?!?!?!?!?!?!?
The Optimus G has LTE!!!!
The Nexus 4 tainted my want of the Note II with its inferior CPU only to leave out something I used to knock the iPhail 4S for...LTE...I'm legitimately annoyed with this...
Why can't Google EVER get a Nexus device 100% right? Hell...even 95% right would be doable...
Am I the only one that's like "WTF, GOOGLE?!"
/rant
I pretty much agree. I can deal with the lack of storage options, but the lack of LTE I think is a deal-breaker.
I don't know about you but HSPA+ is plenty fast for me plus lte is a battery drain.

We knew it didn't have LTE from the FCC docs. So it shouldn't have been a big surprise.
Guess a ton of people choose not to read FCC docs, those weirdos.
Honestly, though, I probably hate you if you have to ***** about something as trivial as LTE.
The Nexus 4 sucks....

To the OP,
Pls stop your whining. A little more research and you'd be able find out why the Nexus won't have LTE. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus had LTE...so why Nexus 4 doesn't? Simple. To achieve LTE it would mean to have both radios built in to the phone. And that sacrificed a lot of the user experience. You can ask every single Verizon Galaxy NExus owner and they'll tell you how much laggy it was compared to its international version without LTE. Another reason why Nexus 4 doesn't have LTE is that, tactically, Google wants to make sure their devices are available for use for every single network on the planet.

Nexus 4 vs ATT Optimus G

I just returned my ATT branded Optimus G after I got my Nexus 4 and I have to say, I'm kinda missing the OG.
Two things right off the batt are of course 25 meg LTE speeds and plenty of storage.
The Form factor of the N4 is nicer to hold as is JB but the OG had some really nice SW tweaks that made it kinda like JB.
No Google Now of course.
The OG also had a louder external speaker as well as the ear speaker was louder too.
This is my first experience will Stock Google, so I do like the clean setup, but I knew no LTE and 16 gigs of storage was going to be an issue.
The OG was very slippery to hold, yes the N4 is too but it has the tapered edges. The cases for the OG were crap and nothing really out there too.
I'm not taking any LG phone into consideration, not now, and not in the future, even if they become the leader in phone market. Those retards want to charge us the nexus 4 in non-play store countries in europe 500~600 euros... around 640$ to 770$.

It's amusing you said that. I was in an AT&T store last night getting a Micro SIM for my Nexus 4 and I played with the LGOG and thought, "I could never deal with this skin," and was a little put off by it.
Keep in mind, too, that people on T-Mobile and other international HSPA+ networks have comparable 15-25Mbps speeds without the LTE.
Edit - By the way, the folks at the AT&T store had NO CLUE to do with my request just to give me a Micro SIM card. One guy was like, "BUT THE PHONE MIGHT NOT BE CONFIGURED TO WORK WITH OUR NETWORK" and I had to reassure them that, yes indeed, I knew what the hell I was doing.

Nexus 4 production halted?

Wtf a new nexus already? This has to be for an LTE version no way its a new one already
sent from one of the NEXUS twins 4 or 7.....
If there's any update... It could be a number of things. Namely,.. LTE, 1080p screen or 32GB storage. I really can't see there being much change (if any?!) as its done so well. To well in fact as there isn't any stock lol.
Ah, come on...

to stay relevant to the coming generation of phones, itll need at least 32gb, 1080p, and maybe a better camera? i dont think a ram or processor upgrade is a big deal at this point
anyway, itd be nice if they come out with something like that.. really sucks for the folks who already got thier n4
Yes I would be pissed royally and I have an upgrade I can use but man is be angry

It is way more likely that they are producing the successor of the Nexus 7 (released in June 2012), which would fit in the release cycle of the previous nexus phones (January 2010, December 2010, November 2011, November 2012).
Seriously... Why do you guys put stock in this stuff? Blog news sites suck. Its sensational so they are posting it. The entire article is full of conjecture and other sites are just reposting the original article. After 2 months they are stopping production to build the next nexus? Yeah friggen right. There is no way that is happening and no one has presented any sort of proof. They haven't even fulfilled all of the back orders yet. Don't take the bait.

Lol this is not going to happen. The nexus devices are what Google thinks android should be and is what developers use to make their great stuff. Why change the concept after 2 months? Total bull to me.

Google and LG knew what chip was in the device they designed. This is not some magical surprise. They can easily disable it in a future update. This whole article is full of conjecture that makes little sense. LG isn't changing the screen, processor, RAM, etc at this point.

Well, the included radio image allows LTE band 4 to be enabled. It's not certified for LTE by the FCC. Search for ZNF/E960 on the FCC site if you want to see the details of the FCC certifications; I can't include a link because I don't have enough posts. (If I had to guess, I'd say that they forgot a #define in the radio image to disable LTE altogether. These things happen.)
That's enough for them to be legally obligated to pull the device in question off the market. I don't know if that's what's actually happened, of course.
I wouldn't believe this rumor if I were you the writer has no source and is just spreading rumors based on what a lg person said about their continuous partnership with Google.
I think they might do small updates to it like fix some of the things that people sent there nexus 4's back for
I call bs. Seriously, every nexus has been given a year, 2 months would just be ridiculous. And this hardware is still good for another year easily, benchmarks smenchmarks, they don't mean diddly poo in the real world. Hell the Galaxy Nexus is still a damn nice phone with its dated omap 4460 SoC!
Also Google probably had the nexus 4 in the works for at least 6 months, probably even longer so I have a hard time believing they'll have another one so soon. If they announce new phones, it's going to most likely be carrier LTE versions.
But I just don't see how anything could realistically top this phone. There is no lag whatsoever, everything is instant, what could better hardware offer that you would even notice?

AT&T 64GB Model to Sprint

Will it be possible to purchase the 64GB model from AT&T and transfer it to Sprint? This is a deal breaker for me so if it's not possible then I'll have to get the Galaxy S4... I wish I could get the Xperia Z, but unfortunately Sprint doesn't carry Sony phones

More than likely, not. While the Sprint version is a World Phone and has a Micro SIM slot, AT&T's model doesn't support CDMA. Pretty sure this is right, can someone back this up?

According to what I've read there are a few different SKUs of the ONE. The Sprint version is a "World Phone" but it seems it may only have 900/1800 GSM for European ROaming and not 850/1900 needed for US roaming.
The AT&T version will not have the CDMA basebands enabled so you would have to buy a sprint ONE to use on sprint.
It does suck a little I know, but with all the cloud options now, and you get 25gb of Dropbox with Sense 5, that is the way things will continue to be IMO.
Edit: After a little searching I found that a few reviewers are claiming that the Sprint Version is GSM 850/900/1800/1900 capable but only HSPA14.4 Data.
On s4gru.com they claim the FCC paperwork shows only 900/1800 (European Bands) GSM capable.
Also USB OTG! Something like this may be a good investment if you need lots of storage space (once it comes out). Or any other USB dongle + flash drive.
I know OTG is an option but it defeats the purpose of the "stylish" device. I also don't always have the luxury of having good enough service to stream music and such. My job takes me all over the USA and to some really remote areas.
I wanted to try something different this time around, but it looks like I'll be settling for a GALAXY S 4 since there really isn't any other options. I'd love a Nexus device, but they don't have LTE which is my main means of Internet when I'm home... it's light years faster than anything else around me and, with tethering, it's free.

Yeah, to each his own, in terms of storage. I don't ever see the necessity of having more than 27-ish gb of free space on my phone, since I don't listen to 10,000 mp3s all the time and can keep my high def movies on a flash drive, xfer them over, and then watch them. OTG doesn't defeat the purpose of a stylish device for me, since it won't be plugged in 100% of the time. And even if it was, I'd still prefer the aluminum One to the S4 anyday.
Good luck with your S4.

Galaxy Nexus is a bit dated. I want something with up-to-date hardware.
As for the Aluminum vs Plastic ordeal it makes no difference to me as I'll be putting a case on it. The aluminum, although nice in both feel and looks, is a lot less durable in my opinion. I love my aluminum element case for my S3 so it looks as good, and more protected, those those other aluminum phones.
I'm not set on any particular device just yet so I'm going to keep considering it. I want a phone that will have great development and I'm sure either phone will be developed just as much as the other. All the talk about the lack of devs going to the S4 is just for the Exynos version I believe.
I'm open to more input from you guys as to which phone to choose. I've stayed far away from HTC devices as they've been cumbersome and difficult to root/flash for me when I've attempted to do it for friends and family, but that could just me... I have to admit the process on all my Samsung devices have been extremely easy and that's one of the things I like.

Nexus 6 based Droid on Big Red?

So in the past few days, I've read rehashed versions of this blurb:
Stemming from what are claimed to be “insider sources,” this info describes the new Droid model as a 5.9-inch quad HD handset (like the Nexus 6 in that regard), but moving up to a Snapdragon 810 SoC (like in that new Qualcomm dev hardware) and a hefty 4GB of RAM.
Like the Droid Turbo, this new handset could also feature a huge battery, hitting 4,000mAh. As for a release, this one could be quite a few months out, not landing until the middle of 2015. And while we’ve been calling this a “Droid” left, right, and center, the source does concede that this aspect’s not necessarily set in stone, and we could even see some non-Verizon action.

Anyone heard anything else about this rumor? That is a phone I would wait for.
