[Q] AT & T throttling data on my LG thrill after 2GB. Any solutions?

I am paying for unlimited data plan (which means staying under top 5% users ).
This month I went on vacation, and my kids used up 2GB on netflix, and now I have data at snails pace for the next 2-3 weeks. Is there any way around this?
I am already upset that they dont have gingerbread yet for this phone.
Any help? I read that services.jar can be modified... any good guide for first time users? or anybody can help?

I am sure one way would be to change to a 4GB plan by paying an extra $10...
AT&T is not good at math.. for them "unlimited < 4GB"

All these wireless providers are doing this throttling crap. The all advertise unlimited data, then throttle the data rate at some arbitrary amount of data.
I would call AT&T and tell them to unthrottle you or you are going to go to Sprint or Virgin Mobile.
Actually, if I had it to do all over again, I would go with Virgin Mobile or Sprint. My next phone will not be an AT&T or Verizon phone.

The only reason I used AT&T was because Verizon and Sprint dont work in my wife's office.. Their service is still horrible everywhere except her workplace. I had hoped iphones may have helped AT&T, but seems Apple made most of the money

Seriously, dude? An extremely quick Google search would give you the answer.
For starters, the AT-T version of the Note will not natively let you use T-Mobile, period. DUH! You can easily hack it to unlock it...and within the last week, someone discovered that flashing a modem file from another phone allows you full access to T-Mobile's 3G/4G network. The International Note (GT-N7000) will only allow you access to EDGE speeds on T-Mobile...what I'm on now.
So, it's your choice.

I know I read about all what u said, but hows your edge on T-Mobile?
I was just wanting peoples feedback I've read the unlocked international is way faster then at&ts version but of course I'd unlock the att phone

How's my EDGE? ****ing slow! You won't ever pull more than 200kbps or so down at peak...that's EDGE by default though. It's a completely asinine thing to even have EDGE networks anymore. It's ever more asinine that T-Mobile is so slow at "re-farming" their 1900 band to work with 3G. I tried switching to Straight Talk, but I just got an email today actually that they can't verify my information? :-/
So if speed is a concern to you...go with the AT-T version. Though, you'll miss out on all the tremendous development here...which I think is more important than speed.
Edit: I've done speed test, where it's slower than 28.8k dial-up, and it brings back terrible childhood memories.

T-Mobile does not have LTE yet...and no this phone will never be capable of LTE. Who cares though? You honestly want a phone that can download at 343455MBPS and eat through your costly data plan in half an hour? You won't be able to tell the difference loading a web page at 5MBPS vs 50MBPS...or how ever fast LTE is supposed to be. It's all a marketing scam, just like the notion of a "limited" supply of bandwidth that all mobile manufactures force feed people with their outrageous prices and stupid caps.

So would u get the international over the att I'm using tmobile4g 60 unlimited plan 2gb of 4g data then after 2g is used it goes to 2g per month or leave tmobile and try straight talk I'm not in a contract btw

No contract? That's simple then! Straight Talk plus International...you get the best phone, and you don't have to go directly through AT-T...it's a win win! :-D
Trying to got Straight Talk myself, but they seem not to like the fact that I'm trying to use my T-Mobile number with an AT-T SIM...plus I have a 200 dollar contract cancellation fee. I wish I was in your boat.

As others have said, coming from Tmo myself, the choice is to get the international version with Straight Talk or the ATT version and keep T mobile. Honestly, I feel that this phone is a media hog and deserves LTE, as well as an unlimited plan.
Yes you will miss out on development, but if you are satisfied with the stock software then you will not miss much.
I had a feeling a while back while reading the i717 spec sheet that it would work with tmo, and decided to go with Straight Talk. Not a bad plan, but definitely on the slower end of 3G
I would honestly go with whatever comes out cheaper, if it does so by a margin of 100+ dollars

I got the att version In White cheaper than I could find a unlocked international black one, ordered a straight talk sim ill try this out If it sucks ill go unlock and do the T-Mobile hack. I really would of got the international by couldn't find a white one at a good price. I hope I don't regret it looks as the development for the international unlocked is way ahead. My question is would straight talk on the international and att been the same speeds?

Just got back from Paris. There were H+ networks there which were blindingly fast on the International version. However, I was concerned about exceeding the 50MB usage per day on my Vodafone-IE PAYG SIM, so I stayed on GPRS (yes, GPRS, no EDGE there).
Incidentally, I had no trouble with PAYG SIM card usage. The biggest failing is that if you continue a session beyond midnight without logging off, it keeps you on the previous day's allowance. That actually worked to my advantage, doing the bigger downloads over the midnight hour, to fill the previous day's 50MB. Sigh. The joys of International Roaming.
But at least the Samsung N7000 was faultless. What an incredible phone. Rooted, and stripped to bare bones (but still with Touchwiz) I get less than 1% an hour battery usage. A full day of intermittent (normal) usage left me with 46% after 24 hours. Unbelievable. Why did I bother to buy a spare battery???

Confirmed: New AT&T "All In One" $55 prepaid

Not quite as good as initially promised. Unlimited voice and text on all plans. You get 250 MB for $40, 2 GB for $55, or 7GB for $70. Also, 250 MB of tablet data for $15. On all the phone plans, you get unlimited throttled data after going over your high-speed allotment.
The fine print says maximum data speed of 4 Mbps, which is lower than the 7Mbps I can often get on AT&T's network, but still not bad.
They do have a bring your own phone program. They ask for your IMEI. I put mine in and went ahead as if I were going to check out, and they seemed okay with me using a Nexus 4.
When you go to the website, it may ask for your zip code before you can view plans. This is presumably because it's being test-marketed in certain parts of the country. The earlier reports were that test markets would be Florida and Texas. I entered a random Florida zip code (34105) and it let me in to view plans. I haven't tried signing up, but I think there's a pretty good chance you could sign up and enter your real Zip code.
My take on this now is that $55 is a little too high for what they're offering. I'll stick with Net10, with 1.5GB of high-speed data guaranteed for $42.50 with a discounted SIM. But if you regularly use more data, this could be a worthwhile offering. The $70 for 7GB of high speed data is pretty much unheard of for prepaid, so if you use that much per month, I'd jump on that.

A website called Fierce Wireless has reported that AT&T will start offering a new prepaid option starting as early as June. The plan will include unlimited voice and texts, plus 2GB of HSPA data, for $50 per month. Once you go over 2GB, you'd be throttled back to 2G. The Fierce Wireless report doesn't clarify if it's HSPA or HSPA+ (in other words, is it 3G or 3.5/4G?). They may offer a plan with 5GB of high-speed data for $70, though that's undecided.

I've never heard of Fierce Wireless, so I don't know if they have a good reputation, but the report is very specific, talks about things happening in the very near future, and is about a subject most trolls would find too boring to make up a whole fake thing about. Also, The Verge, which I consider a reputable source, published a story about the Fierce Wireless piece without doubting its truth.
Even so, this sounds a little too good to be true. In comparison, here are the other deals you can get right now with AT&T prepaid or MVNO:
PureTalk USA: $44 unlimited voice and text, 1GB data, $10 per extra 100 MB overage
Straight Talk: $45 unlimited voice and text, ambiguous amount of high-speed data.
Net10: $50 unlimited voice and text, 1.5GB hard data cap
AT&T GoPhone: $50 250 minutes, unlimited text, 1 GB data
Red Pocket: $60 unlimited voice and text, 2GB hard data cap
Black Wireless: same as Red Pocket
H2O Wireless: same as Red Pocket
AT&T GoPhone: $65 unlimited voice and text, 1GB data
Every one of these plans has a severe disadvantage vs. the new rumored AT&T plan. It's no longer possible to buy Straight Talk SIM cards from their website, and many customers (including me) have been throttled at much lower data levels than ever recently. PureTalk looks like a good deal but has insanely expensive overage charges. The others are either the same price or more expensive than the rumored AT&T prepaid plan, and you have to pay for more data if you go over, rather than simply being throttled down to 2G. Note also that most MVNOs are known for having atrocious customer service.
The comparison is especially stark if you compare it to AT&T's postpaid plans:
450 minutes, unlimited texts, 3GB data: $90
unlimited minutes and texts, 3GB data: $120
That's a lot of money to pay for LTE data, more coverage in unpopulated areas, and a subsidized phone every two years.
If AT&T really does come out with the rumored data plan, and they do give you full speed HSPA+ data, it could put a lot of their MVNOs out of business. And I suspect it will start to cannibalize their lucrative postpaid business.
So my guess is, AT&T will hobble this plan somehow. Either your data will be throttled to 1Mb down, or you'll only get 500 MB or 1 GB of high speed, or the price will be higher. Nothing about the way their MVNOs have behaved recently tells me AT&T wants to make its prepaid offerings more attractive. But I hope I'm wrong with that prediction.

Sounds too good to be true. Guess time will tell. Thanks for the breakdown of mvno's, getting ready to look into one as soon as my contract ends in a couple months.

If they did I would probably directly my parents there. Right now I am on straight talk with t mobile and while its better and much faster in Atlanta I don't know about their part of KC. But they already have AT&T so they know what they'd be getting.

Meh, ATT still sucks around here (socal) they have good coverage but they still have call quality issues so I'll stick with Tmo but bring on the competition.

My ex-wife works at AT&T and says she's heard nothing about this to date. They usually get info around 30 days ahead of a released plan so if this is in the works, it's quite a ways under the radar. I would suspect it'd be more of a working memo that got released or something but, hey, who knows? It'd be great to see them all finally start competing on price!

This looks to me like an okay deal if you want presumably better service, 2GB of data guaranteed, and to be throttled rather than shut off if you go over.
The $70 plan for 7GB looks like a great deal if you use that much data.

$55 is a good price, direct from ATT, and they seem to be far more honest about what they are offering. I still don't like ATT but this is the right direction for them to be going.

Has anyone outside of the cities listed tried putting in a zip code from one of the listed cities and then just have it shipped to there address outside of that city?
I'm on straight talk and hardly use any data but yet I'm still constantly throttled to the point that it's not usable.

ATT or Tmo on straight talk? I never got throttled on either SIM using over 1gb/mo but I'm curious what you are using.

What I'm wondering is if they'll throttle people for steaming like straight talk or if they'll be more like T-Mobile in the way that you can do whatever you want with your data until its used up.

We won't know for sure until people start actually using the service and report back, but their terms of service do not say anything about streaming. They do say no tethering, and of course they give themselves an escape clause that "unlimited does not mean unreasonable," and you can't do anything that congests the network too much.

I'd be very surprised if they banned streaming. I've only ever seen that from Straight Talk and other services owned by the same company. AT&T has often been accused of prioritizing their own customers over MVNO people when the network gets congested. I wonder if AIO customers will get any priority at all.

They are supposed to be more stringent

I called yesterday and they told me I can get service even though I'm not in one of the 3 cities as long as I do it online or drive to a city with a store.
Doing it online isn't a problem but she told me that right now you can only port your number if you go into a store and that porting should be available online within a week.

I did and it didn't work. I got some error telling me to enter a valid ZIP code for my city and state, weird.

When it just asks for your zip code at the beginning put in 77002. Later it should allow you to put in your real zip code and address

Is this just another mvno or is it directly from at&t. I couldnt find anything regarding roaming and whether or not these are treated like mvno or at&t prepaid. How do you guys expect this to function during peak hours? Since they cap the speed at 4mb/s does that mean they have the same priority as postpaid on at&t?

That's exactly what I did. It won't let me order using my zip code. Either it's a site glitch or they really don't want people outside the test markets ordering.

Nexus 5 Straight Talk (AT&T) Thread

So it looks like pretty much every other prepaid carrier has its own thread so I thought I'd start one for the Straight Talk folks. I picked up my N5 a little over a week ago and switched both my wife and I (also has an N5) from Sprint. We'd been with them for a little over 9 years but in their LTE migration here in Portland their coverage went from decent to terrible. Thus far I'm very happy with the AT&T service, speed is good, cost is AWESOME, and I can tether without root so I retain work email functionality. I'm very pleased with the decision to dump Sprint and couldn't be happier with the N5!

With my ATT phone I could not tether unless I went to the high Gb plan. The unlocked Nexus, as you found, lets you do it out of the box.

I did the same. Jumped ship from Sprint and went to Straight Talk, mainly because of the savings and Sprints bogus 3G & WiMax 4G. Tried t-mobiles $30 plan but the cell reception in my area was worse than what i had with Sprint. I was skeptical about going back to At&t as I had them before i had Sprint and was getting charged way more than i should have been paying for one line. I went with Straight Talk At&t and i have LTE coverage, a very reasonable phone bill, and no worries about extra charges. Definitely recommend to anyone whos looking for a reasonable bill and doesnt have good t-mobile coverage.

Me and two of my friends got nexus 5s and att st Sims and two of us networks say home. The other says at&t -_- good service none the less.

Anyone able to get the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to work? I have seen threads where the N5 and T-Mobile users has gotten it to work but none for the ST ATT users.

I dropped Sprint with another six months left on my contract, so it will cost me about $120 in fees, but it's worth it. I'll save almost $ 40 a month, so after just three months the ETF would have been paid off, and I really start saving.
I'm very happy with Straight Talk AT&T. I have superior data speeds, and my calls are clear with no drops.
My mobile hotspot works, too.

I've used a few different pre paid plans the last few years but none of them have been this good. At first I went for the cheapest plan but with low minutes thinking I would use voip or something but I would get extra charges.
Only thing I've worried about with this plan is data limits, but they cleared that up with an actual limit now. I don't really download that much anyways and have a lot of Wi-Fi access.

Absolutely. I downloaded FoxFI but it looks like it's unnecessary.

I'm quite happy with att st for the most part (Salem Oregon). Tmobile data speeds are 2 to 3x faster, but limited service in doors of course.
The one problem I've had with strait talk that I've seen others confirm is the push delay. After an unknown amount of time of inactivity (usually a few minutes) the Google services port on st closes and you won't get new emails or hangouts ect until you refresh or the Google heart beat refreshes (up to 28 minutes).
Fortunately there's an app that lets you manually change the Google push ping to keep it alive. So I'm usually not more than 2 minutes behind on hangouts.

If your on a custom Rom then the native hotspot works without any problem. Although alot of people use FoxFi.

I've used FoxFi and that seems to enable the factory hotspot. In any case it works.

One thing hardly anyone is mentioning is that Straight Talk cripples video streaming on 4G and LTE. Watching YouTube videos is pretty useless unless you switch to 3G which is still pretty crappy. Another thing is that MMS can be hit or miss on Straight Talk. Sometimes its fine and other times it won't work.

I am rooted and have tried FoxFi, the native Hotspot and neither work. It connects but won't let any data pass through.

I did my first month on the Nexus 5 with Straight talk, really have no complaints at all. AT&T's coverage is not anywhere near as good as Verizon, but it's damn well better than Sprint or T Mobile. I left straight talk for h2o Wireless as there's very little LTE out here with AT&T anyways. The data cap was just too small on straight talk.
H20 wireless $60 a month fit unlimited everything, no throttling.

I have read that H2O throttles that $60 plan after 3GB.

I am glad someone started an att straight talk thread. Can anyone with a VPN tell me if it works with att straight talk? I use a pretty common VPN provider which works no problem on WIFI but has very frequent dis-connects while on mobile. It is pretty much unusable while on mobile.

The way I figure it. Att is best in my area.
45$ a month for unlim text. Minutes. And 2.5gb data. Is still cheaper then if I wanted to go sign a contract with att for service. I'd have capped minutes. Maybe unlimited text. And 2gb data. Not even unlimited with slow speeds...
So I get an extra 500mb. Free mins. And such. And its cheaper and no contract..
And I haven't found anything better yet.

[Q] Maybe leaving T-Mobile for Sprint - What will I lose? or Gain?

Although I have been a very satisfied T-Mobile customer for the last 7 years, it appears and tech support confirms that the tower that I connect to at home is oversold and instead of the 16 to 20 megs down that I used to get, I am now getting 1.5 meg on a good day and it goes down to .3 meg on bad days. I can't live with that as I have little other access to Internet bandwidth in my neighborhood and it gets worse every week. I use the Internet for business. The only fix appears to be another tower. Not a quick fix.
So, If I make the switch, what happens? Although it may work out better in switching if I give Sprint my existing Nexus 6, I will be using a Nexus 6 with them. I read comments that I will lose simultaneous voice and data use because of their Spark network. Is that true? What LTE speeds should I expect? I also understand that I will lose tethering if I opt for the unlimited plan (I am actually leaning toward the 20 GB family plan which I understand that I can share with my data enabled devices.) I don't read any nice things about Sprint.
Any thoughts you can share would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Dont do it bro, sprint is horrible. Tell me if you find 25 people you know that love sprint more than T-Mobile. Sprint is a rotting company hiding behind sales gimmicks and ideas from T-Mobile. T-Mobile is still rolling out this year with Band 12 700Mhz and its LTE footprint roll out replacing old edge areas. More people complain about sprint way more than T-Mobile. So if you dont like T-Mobile, you might as well get shartrizon or AT$$$T. I would recommend calling T-Mobile to send a tech. to your area to fix the issue or report it for fixing.

Although I have been a very satisfied T-Mobile customer for the last 7 years, it appears and tech support confirms that the tower that I connect to at home is oversold and instead of the 16 to 20 megs down that I used to get, I am now getting 1.5 meg on a good day and it goes down to .3 meg on bad days. I can't live with that as I have little other access to Internet bandwidth in my neighborhood and it gets worse every week. I use the Internet for business. The only fix appears to be another tower. Not a quick fix.
So, If I make the switch, what happens? Although it may work out better in switching if I give Sprint my existing Nexus 6, I will be using a Nexus 6 with them. I read comments that I will lose simultaneous voice and data use because of their Spark network. Is that true? What LTE speeds should I expect? I also understand that I will lose tethering if I opt for the unlimited plan (I am actually leaning toward the 20 GB family plan which I understand that I can share with my data enabled devices.) I don't read any nice things about Sprint.
Any thoughts you can share would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Is Cricket Wireless an option? They are essentially AT&T with throttled LTE speeds of 8Mpbs down, no throttle up. I am paying $55/month for 20GB of LTE data. They no longer offer that plan, but have the same plan at 10GB of data.

See, that is my feeling as well. I can't find anyone that has nice things to say. As to AT&T or Verizon, wow does the cost jump. And to the point about getting a tech out there, been there, done that. T-Mobile is very aware of the problem. They have bee running tests for a while. Sadly, it is oversold. Not broken. Don't have too many options. There were some numbers from Verizon that weren't horrible, but I don't think Verizon pays ETFs.

Someone is selling a CricketWireless 20GB LTE plan on Howard Forums...I have had ZERO issues using Cricket with my Nexus 6...in fact I am loving it.

I have looked at Cricket. The problem is that I do exceed 10 GB in some months and there is no provision for tethering or tablets that I could see. One of those options would be necessary.

I had verizon wireless for 10 years and left them over a year ago for T-Mobile. I didn't regret anything. I didn't switch because of price because I could afford verizon, but their plans and phones suck and they are scam artists trying to rape every penny from you just like John Legere quoted. In my area and even in rural places in georgia I get pretty decent excellent coverage and service. At home I usually get from 80-112mbps down and 7-15mbps up. Verizon couldn't match that and hell, everyone I know that has sprint hate it and are jumping to T-Mobile because they get less than 1mbps and call quality sounds like pure ****. T-Mobile has nationwide VoLTE and WiFi calling and texting and the "Uncarrier" exclusives. I have unlimited data so I use it as my home internet since I have root for tethering unlimited data and its way faster than charters fastest speeds they deliver to my house lol. Sprint is also bad just like verizon because remember they are money hungry companies and they will lock u in contracts and can only use their cdma devices or select unlocked devices like the nexus 6. I heard verizon doesn't recognize the unlocked nexus 6, idk if that is true or not.

Link? And what about tablets or tethering? I need that data sometimes when I am out in the field and I have to remote into something. Yes, even my 6 inch screen is a little small. I don't see any plans for tablets.

Although tethering is not supported, it does work.
There also would be no issue popping in a Cricket SIM in a Nexus 9. I've considered selling my WiFi N9 and getting a LTE N9 with a 20GB Cricket SIM.

There is an app on the playstore if you have root called "WiFi Tether Router" which will work or if you want unlimited native tethering.
#1 in SQL lite go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db/global
#2 add " tether_dun required " and set the value to 0
#3 in your APN settings add " dun " to APN type and set your APN to IPv4 only since IPv6 doesnt support this.

Either use OpenSignal app or their site and zoom in on your neighborhood. They have a list of carriers with their average upload and download speed.
Personally I wouldn't use Sprint as OpenSignal and Rootmetrics has shown it is the slowest network across the country.
Get a AT&T GoPhone sim and try them out for a month. Walmart sells the sims. They now have rollover data on prepaid just like T-mobile. Plus they're not throttled like Cricket.
I wait for Callingmart to announce their monthly 10% off GoPhone refills on Twitter. Then refill each month saving me $6.

Just my 2¢ but I have been with Sprint for going on 8 years. Their service is great in my area (now) and their customer service has always been outstanding. While I do agree that they don't have the best coverage, they have come a long way in my time with them. You can get unlimited, TRULY unlimited data with them for a good price. They offer payment plans on the top devices and as I said, customer service has bent over backwards for me more than once. Choice is yours, OP, just do your homework and choose wisely.

Its really pointless to ask random people on the internet because they more than likely do not live in your state much less your city. Signal strength is the most important aspect of cell phone service and you wont find that answer here. I would find a coverage map and compare the carriers, make sure it is a legitimate coverage map and not advertising. I would also ask people in your area with Sprint so you can compare.

To each his own. I have learned a lot from this, coverage map aside (I am in a Spark enabled area of moderate strength, the same as I am for T-Mobile and for that matter, likely AT&T, which tells me little that I didn't already know. It is a topology issue.) My question wasn't about coverage. It was about the experience. I have learned that, unlike T-Mobile, Sprint customer service is out of country, but some have had good experiences with the company. I have also received useful suggestions about alternatives. This has been very useful to me. Sprint could have the strongest signal in my area and still be a company to avoid like the plague.

This morning my Speed Tests were decidedly better. At least 8 and as high as 12 meg. I haven't seen those numbers in months. So, (holding breath), perhaps my last call got something changed. I won't make changes unless I am sure there is no hope for change.

Other than calling to activate new phones, I have only had to call once in all my years with Sprint and I have no complaints on it. I don't generally need service, I pay my bill and use my phone lol. As far as overseas call centers, that's not entirely true; there is a Sprint call center in my city (along with a T-Mobile call center). To each their own.

I switched from Sprint to Verizon as my family plan 4 years ago, best decision of my life. Sprint will frustrate you beyond belief with their slow data, you won't even be able to load Google. I know you said the big 2 cost too much, so I'd stay with T-Mobile if I were you, avoid Sprint at all costs. I personally love Verizon, have 5 off contract smartphones with them, 15GB shared data, and pay $153+tax a month.
