[BUG] USB OTG - could we get some N4 community members to help raise this issue - Nexus 4 General

Hey, I purchased a 16GB model, with the intent of using USB OTG to use in conjunction with USB flash drives like we can with basically all other phones these days - but obviously it's still my fault for purchasing on the first day without knowing that USB OTG isn't supported on the Nexus 4.
Now that it's pretty much all but confirmed that USB OTG isn't working on Mako, maybe we could star the 'bug' on the official android bug report website, and maybe at a comment to voice opinions that some of you (as well as me).
If we all star it & maybe add a comment, it could help?
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=40087

Please don't add a comment. As noted in that thread, adding a comment spams everyone who has previously commented or starred. If you have something new to add, fine, but if you're just posting "Yeah, this stinks!" or the equivalent, please refrain.
(Anyhow, I'm not sure how much that bug report will help; it seems most likely that the hardware just doesn't support USB host mode.)

I'm holding out hope that it's a software issue at this time until it's confirmed by Google. I know they wrote Mako can't supply 5V but even with a powered USB hub devices don't work.

I'm not entirely sure this is a bug. It may be a design choice combined with poor documentation.
Look here:
http://support.google.com/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2809827&topic=2809758&ctx=topic
This page clearly says "USB is not supported for connecting such devices."
It appears to me that USB OTG is not supported on the nexus 4.
We can keep our fingers crossed that this is fixable via a software/firmware update. Although I'm concerned that that USB OTG is hardware incompatible with the Slimport display solution LG has chosen. Both USB OTG and slimport display use the micro USB connector's pin #4 for different purposes. USB OTG needs a cable that pulls it to ground to indicate to the phone that it should operate in USB host mode. I'm less familiar with slimport, but from what I've read it seems to perform some signaling on pin 4 to enable and stream video.
If the two really are mutually exclusive, I personally wish they had ditched slimport in favor of USB OTG since I can (eventually) mirror the display using miracast.

They just updated that page today (dec 6 depending where you are). So it clearly says that... only after the phone has been out 3 weeks until today the documentation said it should work. they basically just said "yes it works" and then a month later said "lol jk no it doesnt"

It is not the issue when ChainFire update his Stickmount to 2.1.

If you're holding out hope, I appreciate your optimism but it probably isn't going to happen... I'm considering calling up Play support and asking for a refund so I can get a 16gb, even though that probably won't happen for a few weeks,
BTW... just called the play store. They will NOT return your device because of this issue. Even for an exchange (I just wanted a 16gb) I don't understand their logic but because they changed their documentation, I guess that removes them of liability... IMO that does nothing of the source. I'm filing a BBB report now, which is something I never thought I'd do to google... this is BS.

Class action is probably the best way to handle this. I'd much rather have USB host mode.
I voided my warranty.

I bought the Nexus 4 under the assumption that I could at least get USB OTG to satisfy the lack of a micro SD card. FML.

Call again and talk to someone else, as long as you are within the return window, you can return for any reason at all, with a restocking fee.
Or you could scalp it on ebay to and make money on the whole deal  I'm just glad I didn't know about OTG when I purchased it, or I would have gone 8GB.

Hi I found out that the CPU itself can use OTG so maybe we could expoid that? Hope I helped.

Where I can find this item? I'm looking forward to buy it. Is there anyone who already has and working?
So what does this actually do?
What it does is allow you to put an SD card from your camera into one end and then connect the other end to the tab. This would allow you to move files back and forth, hence the name Camera Connection Kit.
BUT this product is vaporware because the tab is not a USB host. This thing will never exist and never did exist. It is something that the iPad has and perhaps a optimistic marketer either at Samsung or Expansys slapped a Samsung logo on a pic of the iPad dongle because they expected it to be released.
There are a few other solutions to getting pix from your camera to the tab, none are elegant and some are expensive.
1) Remove your MicroSD from your tab and insert it into a SD card adapter and then insert into your camera. This is cheap but is a pain and the microsd can get hosed if you do not carefully mount it and dismount it when reinserting or removing.
2) Root your tab, buy an Eye Fi X2 Pro card for your camera, install Android Tether for root users and use the card to wifi transfer to your tab, using Eye-Fi Server for Android OS or Fe-Fi or MoPhotos from the Android market
3) Root your phone, remove your microsd, use mobidapter (USB to microSD dongle) and then use root explorer to transfer pics to you internal SD card.
in other words, tab is not gadget to work with camera becaused of this connector issued
darn....... why does all this camera kits stuff have to be in SD Card Format???? My camera only supports CF cards..... and a lot of those mid to high end DSLR used CF.
response from expansys
Expansys inform me before 4 hours that the specific item has remove from the products list!!!!

Honestly... you probably don't want to use your tablet for DSLR photos anyway.
Besides the fact that RAW images are large files (~20-30MB) and huge resolutions (18 Megapixel) that no tablet can adequately handle... there is no way to calibrate the screens or make or convert RAWs on a tablet.
I would use a point-and-shoot camera with a microSD card inside a SD adapter.
Tablets are supposed to be about putting small size and mobility foremost over wide functionality or productivity.
would the current usb kit for the 10.1 work on the p1000?

How does the viewsonic gtab have usb host on 2.2¿
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Because Viewsonic customized the rom and added it in.
so it becomes a software problem?
i thought there are hacks to enable it on 2.2/2.3 too?
it was possible to inject 2.1 with host mode, many cheap tablets did it. However the p1000 is missing the host protocol on-chip so cannot do the required functions like power regulations etc. So tis more of a no hardware than a software problem.

my thoughts are the usb chip doesn't have ability to control unit to socket power, hence why anything that requires a fair number of volts wont work (memcard reader, mouse, thumbdrive etc)
And I have a few 2.1 tablets with USB host, and a 2.2 tablet with usb host (Scroll and some other weird make).
So not sure what is not correct here? If you have info that rebuts this please share?

I would very much like to be wrong on this, but all of my development and rough research along with the fact there are no volt dependent accessories for the tab7 lead me to conclude that it doesn't do it!
The reason I want to be wrong is that I have a few tabs here and want them to be the product of choice for a project I'm doing, the limiting factor is usb host, I would really want it for 2 hardware accessories, but I found only evidence that the chip that controls the in-socket and the onboard controller do not have ability to play with voltage to the socket thus can never accept any accessory that requires above the base voltage of the board.
Again I REALLY WANT TO BE WRONG here
Let me know if you have any info to say thats wrong please please please !

TV out via MHL adapter? Yes or no?

Does the Nexus 7 have hdmi out via MHL adapter?
Doesn't say on the spec sheet and I wasn't able to watch the keynote today to see if it did.
Check out around the 9:00 mark of the keynote. Whether it makes it to production is to be seen but obviously they are putting video out.. also on the Google Play Store under tech specs they don't mention the Galaxy Nexus has MHL.. but it does have it so just because it doesn't list it on the N7 page doesn't mean it won't have it- just have to wait and see
Engadget says there is but I'm hoping that they will confirm it. Can't post the link yet but it's in their review.

a minute late there buddy haha
Well that is ****ing stupid. I guess they want us to all buy that damn orb to watch our videos on. **** that. Not getting it now. I will wait for a complete tablet. It's even more insulting considering that it shouldn't have that much of an impact on price. I love TV-out considering I travel quite a bit. Looks like I need to get a developer one somehow if I want HDMI out. Probably no usb OTG either.
So I'm guesing MHL support needs to be in hardware.. and something software can't alleviate.. right? X_x Unfortunate though I've never put anything on my TV through a device considering I have a computer near by to do that.. :T

It is hardware if the Touchpad is anything to go by. It may be there lurking in the shadows but I highly doubt it. Considering the developer ones have an HDMI out port and all kind of pushes me to doubt it territory. It's is so odd to have something clearly showing TV out of some kind then not giving it to people. Tegra 3 was all about getting people to give up their consoles and all of that crap but how can someone do that if it is tied to a 7 inch device? So strange.
Makes no sense why they wouldn't include it other than cost cutting honestly just another strike against it.. watching the keynote it looks like nothing is hooked up on the left side where that hdmi port is just the middle and the mic port?? baffling
I hope you are right. I have been burned too many times with all the I hope this is included and the engadget review kind of seals it.
What I'd like to see is some sort of dock that attaches via the pogo pins and does hdmi out. I think this is more likely.

Cancelled preorder.
Was willing to live without memory expansion slot, but add to that the lack of video out is a total and utter deal breaker for me.
I'm sure sometime shortly after the Nexus 7 ships, a similar device will come out with these options for a similar price.
Most newer HDTV's support DLNA which works great. There are some good free DLNA apps on the marketplace too. BubbleUPnP and iMediaShare Lite are both really good. The paid iMS is better though as it does YouTube in HD.

[HACK] Hardware HDMI/MicroSD Hack? Unused Pins/Connectors

HI! i've found some pics of the nexus 7 motherboard and some connectors seems to be unused... If you look at the "con1" (the one used for micro usb connection) it has 22 pins 0_o. Maybe we can find a hardware hack =D
More images here
We could do a "simple" (dangerous) test: HDMI has a hot plug detection pin, the only way to check is provide one pin with +5v dc and check if any other pin sends a ddc query.... but how can we find the hotplug pin (if there's any)?

From the teardown it was pretty clear there was space for the rear camera as well as HDMI.
The IO presenters were using units with HDMI, so it was probably the same motherboard, populated.
You would have to be a hard-core hacker to want toi add your own HDMI. No idea what is missing beside header and connector. Probably not as bad as adding MHL
I am happy living without HDMI.
Maybe I will never use the hdmi connector but hacking electronical things when i have to hack biological ones every day is a nice way to spend the time xD

Can't back it up right now but will frantically google to find it.. But I remember reading that it had the hardware for mhl but currently not enable in software?
but just tested my jellybeaned gnex and that works fine with mhl so not sure how much truth there is to that.
I can vouch for the photo of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port, as well as a comment from a presenter that the special units they were using for presentations had HDMI.
No, I can not provide any links. That was thousands of pages ago...
I do not believe the Nexus 7 has the MHL chip, or any provision for it. Asus is not listed as a MHL provider.
Samsung (Nexus) is a MHL provider, so the hardware there would not be a surprise.
In that teardown review (where the OP got that image, I believe), they mistakenly said it supported HDMI out and included a picture of the HDMI cable from the nexus Q. They later retracted that comment.
That might be the source of the confusion.
There was at least one actual picture of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom.
I think a reviewer got their hands on a presenter's unit.
The image you're looking for is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736916
The internel dev versions (the ones used for presentations) had mini hdmi.
So, it does make sense that theres space on the board.
Thank you for that picture link! I searched everywhere for that...
At least that is one less reason to think I have lost my mind...
I'd love to be able to solder on an sdcard slot, if that's all that's needed. It's generally pretty easy to solder to headers if you're careful about it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
From the teardown, I don't recall seeing any space for an SD card.
Rear camera - yes, HDMI - yes, but not SD Card.
I could be mistaken...
Also, the external storage problem has been pretty much solved with a USB OTG cable and stickmount.
we could solder a slod for an additional sd card... there's enaught space to fit in a sd card without "external" access.

we're counting pins and waiting for more info =P
look here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/KjNsrjlvHZdFWEGF.huge
we have 14 free pins and an hdmi data connection requires only 12 wires + 5v + grnd.
i'm looking for someone who can do some simple tests on the unused pins.
when i will have the nexus 7 i'll do it by myself at uni but maybe someone who have the I/O version now could do something meantime.
Looks pretty interesting to me hope we cram a sd card In there somewhere.

Aftermarket Dock (using POGO). Would you Kickstart?

So I am usually a lurker on XDA, but I thought I'd get the community's thoughts. I'm a fellow Nexus 7 owner and I want a dock that uses the pogo pins. I'm tired of waiting for ASUS and I also happen to be a mechanical engineer that works in the consumer electronics industry. So, I've mocked up my own design. It's similar to the ASUS design and will have USB charging and audio out. The only way I could bring it to market is Kickstarter.
Before I go through that much effort (Kickstarter has revised its approval process) I want to gauge demand. The sale price would be $30. I've made a poll below to streamline things, but feel free to add comments. Rendered concept below. I am also considering adding stereo RCA outputs as well. Would you want that?

|UPDATE 1|
Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm still in the early design phase so feedback helps. To address the request for speakers: at this point it's not something I'm looking to add. It adds cost, development time and complexity. Depending on how well things go if I put it on Kickstarter, a speaker option may be considered. Also, now that I've seen there is some interest, I refined the design slightly to slim it up. See below:
Would adding some sort of HDMI out be too complicated or difficult?

I'd personally rather not pay to have a below-par amplifier included.
well, if you WANT to people buy your dock, putt 2 USB's. i would buy a dock, but a dock like this needs a USB ports. so everybody could use mouses, keyboards or harddrives.

I would love to, but the pogo pins do not support USB OTG (needed for keyboards, usb drives, etc.) That would require connecting to the micro-USB port. Also, as of now, charging while using OTG is almost non-functional. It may be possible with the Nexus 10 (6 pin pogo) but not the 7.
I'd buy it if available on Europe

Fine then, maybe I will make one myself!.....maybe.
I just can't think of a good reliable material that doesn't require big machining tools to work with it.

Type C --> HDMI

hey guys i'm looking for a HDMI adapter, i saw that the official adapter is unavailable into the play store, so i'm wondering what's the better choice.
thanks for the tips
i know that n5x and n6p doesn't support mirroring by usb
Ditto.
I don't know why the decision was made, but that feature is not supported on our phones. I wouldnt expect the 2016 nexi to support it either.

Best bet is just getting a Chromecast and do it wirelessly.

because pixel C support mirroring via tipe C
I've used my 5X with Chromecast to mirror and it works perfectly fine. It's also a lot more convenient than plugging in a cable and being stuck tethered to something like a TV.

Ive had this issue come up a few times. what about the scenario where you want video out (wired or wireless) and there is no wifi?
you cant plug it up straight to hdmi.
you cant cast to chrome cast because it requires a wifi network to connect to.
you could setup a wireless hotspot and run it, but it would have to be off of another device.
i work at an audio shop and we recently got in some really cheap DUAL screen mirroring devices. You plug it into hdmi, plug it into a charger, and it generates its own AP. you connect to the AP, and you use the screen cast function to get video out. we have had to do this alot recently with the latest samsung devices dropping MHL and other phones dropping video through usb.

We need miracast back, but this would be even better

I have no issues with chromecast and apps, but when it comes to mirror the smartphone screen it keeps dissconecting, the chromecast and router are I'm the same room, I belive a HDMI would be a better solution.
Native USB Type-C HDMI output is now a reality http://www.androidauthority.com/usb-type-c-hdmi-714479/amp/

The hardware port itself (ie the 5x) needs to support HDMI alt mode over USB C. The cable can't just magically produce video signals. The port needs to mux the video signals onto the appropriate pins. This likely involves paying qualcomm more licensing (assuming the chipset supports the feature)

I know. Guess I should've added, "Something to look forward too on future devices."

Pretty sure the 821 supports video/HDMI out nativley via USB-C. Whether it is gimped off by the manufacturer eg HTC/Google for 2016 nexi/pixels is another story
If they do not support, I would think it's unlikely to receive HDMI alt

Being badged a "Pixel" device it would be nice if they licensed the bells and whistles. I don't know specifically Qualcomm's licensing menu though.
I was confused by how you wrote the description above. It makes it seem like HDMI support and HDMI alt support are different things.
As far as I know, there is no "native" HDMI support over USB C. It is only supported through alt-mode reconfiguration of the pins.
From the end-user standpoint they don't really care, it is just a cable that they connect to the phone.

Yeah my language isn't clear, but neither is their language or my understanding. The Qualcomm image refers to HDMI, despite the likely connector being USB C in most applications. We will see.
I just looked and the pixel C doesnt support video out or alt mode.
I see differing info on Chromebook pixel 2
