(Request)Windows 8 Keyboard Dock - Nexus 7 Accessories

I saw the surface and fell in love with their keyboard dock, and was wondering if there was anything like it for my nexus. I thinking would be really cool+ sell a lot of such thing existed.

What do you exactly mean by "Windows 8" (an operating system) "keyboard dock" (something between a docking station and a keyboard)?

I take it Microsoft isn't advertising these things all over TV and the magazines in Italy then?
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/18/hands-on-with-microsoft-surface-for-windows-rt/

I wonder is there is a way to mod the official one, because the nexus has pins on the side like on the surface tablet, and the keyboard connects onto these pins

No, there's no way to modify the official one as the pogo pins are power (+/-) and audio (left|right channel).

You mean the Surface RT Smart Cover. There are some bluetooth keyboards integrated with a case, search for that.

None are as pretty or as thin and simple as the Surface dock, all the nexus ones are fat and and heavy.

There is no way to mod the surface keyboard. The surface does have pogo pins but it has two more pins while our nexus 7 has 4.

Do you know if there is a dock for the Focus out there or if the dock for the Galaxy S will work?

lol - that's why I edited my post - I had asked the same question. Turns out it goes in landscape so the plug fits on the side.
This is the only thing I could really find for a car dock

Ok, perhaps not 'docks' yet these are viable stands. The one with the adjustable 'gooseneck' is from Wal*Mart in their car accessory section ($8). You can use a section cup only or, in my case due to wood desk, use the included 3M tape 'coaster' that then the suction cup attached to. You WILL have to remove the foam on the inside of the holding 'arms' to make the phone fit. Works great.
The other is a Samsung "Mobile Phone / MP3 Player Desktop Cradle" P/N:ET-CS01SBEGXAR (around $10). On the bottom of this cradle are places to run a cable as needed.
And yes, i know my phone needs cleaning
I can confirm that the Galaxy S dock does work with the focus. I have both phones and becides the camera and outer plastic they seem hardware identical.

I went and bought the galaxy s dock today and I can say that it does NOT work with the focus. The connections are in the same spot, but the depth of the connections are off (the dock's connector is deeper than the focus's port).

So, that prevents the Focus from connecting or just doesn't allow it to sit right? If it's just a problem with how it sits, it may be able to be customized. Maybe you could take some pics?

I have looked at all the docks for the various Galaxy S devices. From what I have seen, I think the Epic 4G dock may just work for us. The Epic 4G has a hardware keyboard and I'm thinking that will locate the microusb connection in a better position to connect with our device.

Car Dock

I really hope they make a good car dock for the nexus s. My nexus one car dock was amazing!
I love having the N1 car dock, but the lack of audio output on that thing really sucks. Several times a day I get to dock my phone *and* plug in an audio cable. I could use BT stereo, but the quality is bad. (And since N1 lacks a dock connector, even if the car dock had stereo output, it would use BT.)
That said, doesn't the NS have a real dock connector on it?
I'm keeping my N1 and upgraded my wife's G1 to the NS. The availability of a car dock is the only consideration in whether I upgrade my own phone or not.

What universal car docks are you using for your NS now?
They could easily use NFC to launch the dock app, and it would be possible to make an inductive charging back like they had on the palm pre.
No dock port so I have to settle with something more generic. I use this Arkon dock currently in my car. It's the most compact looking one I can find.
I've ordered a Vlingo that will attach to the vent, just until I can get a Brodit...
I could really do with a decent univerals dock though, as I change phones every 3 months

That looks much better than the one I'm using right now. For $12 I'm going to give it a shot.
Eh, I wouldn't recommend that Arkon dock. It's a tight fit for the phone. I bought one when I had the Vibrant and I didn't like how tight of a fit it was. If I was ever in a hurry, I'd be afraid that I would break that dock. It's great for the iPhone because the size is smaller, but for the 4" phones, I would not recommend (especially when you're using a case). But that's just from my experience.
I'm currently using this universal dock. It might not fit your needs since it uses one of those "patented" sticky technologies.

Got a free $20 rewards certificate from Best Buy so I used it on that dock. It's actually a very good dock. I haven't used it with any cases though, so that might be a 50/50 thing. You can look up "bracketron" on youtube to see a clip of it. It's worth the $5 I paid for, perhaps not $24 though.

Besides the custom one for vibrant, it's the best looking universal holder I've ever had. I have the another Arkon universal holder that squeeze from the sides, which works well but a bit large and ugly IMO. This has only 4 little legs that can be seen from the front. The legs are angled in, so they hold the phone really well. Due to the position of the legs being on top/bottom, I wouldn't recommend use it side way. It holds the phone vertically perfectly well. On the topic of size, unlike the original iphone 4 version of the same dock, its body at the lower part can be extended to accommodate larger phone. As for the back of the holder, it's the same as the other universal one I own, one hinge at the suction cup and one ball joint at the holder, both adjustable. I'd still get this one if given a chance to go back in time. Everything said is my own personal opinion of course.

Awesome, thank you for the write-up. One more question, in portrait mode, is the microUSB port obscured? I want to make sure the port isn't blocked for a car charger.
It's unfortunate that you don't recommend using this in landscape mode, but I suppose at $12 that's something I could live with. College budget ftl. >_>

I thought that too... I don't know how well inductive charging like a power mat would work with the NFC antenna. I also don't know that you can use the NFC to launch an app... isn't it link driven? Maybe that's something you could do with intents, I haven't given it too much thought. I think the inductive charging is the bigger issue.
Does anyone know if the NS has the magnetic switch to detect a dock?

Play Store N7 Case - Magnet Sensor

Does anyone have this case yet? I already ordered it, but I have no idea if it will work with the N7's magnet to wake feature.
You would think it would since Google is selling it, but I dunno. If it doesn't - It would have been nice for them to tell us about the feature so we could hold off on ordering cases.
Good question! I'd really like to know this as well. I thought someone on here said they had already received their case from Google.
If it doesn't just go to a crafts store and pick up some a role of sticky magnet tape. Cut a very tiny circle and adhere it to the lid where the sensor will be on the device.
Problem solved.

Thats a brilliant suggestion thanks. Do you know if the polarity was A or B?
Ill have to do this if a magnet isnt in the cover. easy fix!
ugh. There's no magnet case. The magnets are there to hold the pogo pins to the dock. It's how pogo pins work. If it were a cable how else would it stick to the pins? The sleep feature is in case you want to turn off the screen while charging or playing music, or if it were possible for a MHL dock.

Yep, that is exactly how they work, as seen in the Galaxy Nexus landscape dock.
Though the positioning of the magnetism sensor on the Nexus 7 seems to be rather odd, bottom left...(probably just internal spacing constraints though). It would make a bit more sense for it to be on the right side, but that's probably just me.

After some testing and questions on my you tube video of the screen off/on behavior there seems to be some dependence on the type of magnet used. Those soft flexible magnets like some refrigerator magnets don't seem to work. I don't know if its the type of material that makes them ineffective or the strength. Magnetic tape might not work.

Hard to believe no one has a simple landscape charging dock that uses the pogo pins yet, haven't even seen a pre-order announcement.
It probably won't be landscape for the pogo pins seeing as they are quite low down they could fit in a vertical dock. Also seeing as the home screen is vertical I don't see how an official landscape dock would come out.

Be warned, there are reports that this dock has the microUSB port rotated the wrong way so the Nexus 7 would have to be inserted facing backwards.
Am I correct in assuming that a dock is no use except as a paperweight if I'm not willing to remove Nexi™ from his little house?
And yes I'm serious. My toothbrush can charge without actually involving sockety things.

Nothing a new launcher doesn't fix as far as landscape for the home screen, Also I would think for watching movies, listening to music, etc. having it docked and charging would be a good thing and landscape is no problem.
With the pogo pins, they should be able to put two charging points, one for vertical and one for horizontal without any plugs sticking out and in the way.

Today at work ive been playing around with one of the Kensington K33239 docks connected through USB-OTG. All ports seem to work except the audio and parallel ports. i managed to get the serial port working with the help of "Slick USB 2 Serial Terminal" as the only real reason i would need a serial port is for works router. works great, except that its only a docking station solution and does not charge the nexus 7 at the same time.

Yes. I'd recommend against getting it, but for the price it is alright. The nexus will slide out of the clips unless it is in a second case. (The keyboard case is big enough that this won't matter though.)

I actually have an earlier version of this case for my previous 7" tablet. I'm typing this now with the Nexus 7 and the keyboard case. The new one will hold the N7 more securely because it has an adjustable top clamp. It does appear that the included usb adapter is not otg (not host mode) but since we have native ability to connect to keyboards, etc., shouldn't be an issue.
