A custom ROM! A custom ROM! My phone for a custom ROM!.! - Galaxy Ace S5830i General

Okay, I have no idea why, but my phone doesn't seem to like any ROM except for the stock. Every ROM, every update I've tried, has just gone and bricked my phone. I'm a newbie as far as development goes, but I do know my way around flashing, applying updates from SD and stuff. And I'm careful not to mess with files designed for the other ace. I also follow instructions to the letter. I'm as scared of bricks as anyone else.
So I was wondering whether any of you could help me out here. Do tell me if it's better to stick with the stock ROM though. Awaiting a reply.
Cheers
EDIT:
Okay, I downloaded this iDroid ROM from here
My phone's kernel version says 2.6.35.7([email protected] #201209221033), but there's absolutely no change. Any ideas on what to do now? Still waiting for a reply. :-\
Still struggling to find a proper non-stock ROM that works on my phone X-(

Well firstly ask why yourself why you want to flash a particular custom ROM? Does it have features you need etc? If not then stock is fine and there are many ways alter the appearance of your phone without flashing a new custom ROM via apps in the play store.
As always prior to flashing a custom ROM make sure you have all the tools and knowledge to flash back to stock if anything goes wrong. OK so by the sounds of it you have installed RB,s kernel but have not installed IDroid ROM, tell us how you tried to flash and that will give us more of an idea where you are going wrong.

Why the custom ROM: I was told by a friend (who uses a Galaxy Y) to use one, so as to make the phone less laggy. And I like to have my devices looking a little different from what everyone uses. Pardon me
EDIT: And yes, I do have the firmware required to flash back, as well as Odin. I've flashed before, so you could say I'm not a total waste there And I seem to have trouble understanding the difference between ROM and kernel.... could you please explain it to me? At least I'll know where I'm going wrong.

Kitt explain to us how you are doing your flashes and let us know what firmware your running. To advise we need as much info as you can give.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

The standard procedure I follow:
1. Download the flashable zip to my phone SD card.
2. Reboot into stock recovery, enter clockworkmod through its zip file
3. Backup just in case, install the zip through cwm or stock recovery, whichever the dev advises
4. Reboot

Update: managed to get RazoDroid working. Firmware XXLD2, Rafael Baugis kernel (obviously, duh ) and no problems so far!

Just because you're probably not following the instructions correctly doesn't mean it's the developer's fault, and that you should be 'disappointed'.

True. I do my best to follow instructions, but I may have overlooked something somewhere. And no, I'm not blaming any devs, not intentionally anyway, because I don't have any rights to.... At the end of the day, I did manage to make something work, and now I'm happy with it, so all I can say is peace out
Running RazoDroid ROM on Rafael Baugis kernel, somehow managed through without bricking phone for the nth time

Un-root before flash..?

Hi, Just about to flash XXJPY and just need to know, do I have to UN-root before flashing..?
Thanks
no you dont have to unroot
regards
Great that's good news...
And what about Battery Icon Mod, does that have to be un-installed..??
Thanks
No, the framework will be replaced with the ROM's framework. Just make sure when you try to add that mod again to make sure it works with the ROM you are flashing.

Basically the new rom replaces everything including root..??
So, just to get this clear, there is no need to un-install anything, un-root or factory reset before flashing, correct..?

You want to remove any lag fix first before flashing something and make sure you have 3-button combo working. Those 2 are important. Once you do that, flash a ROM and yes; since you are flashing a new ROM, it will replace your kernel, delete root (since its a new base ROM and kernel, it will include root if you flash one of the xda dev ROMs), replace your recovery, and delete some android files (but nothing serious on your SD card, just make sure you back up everything just incase with nanoid). If there are any problems, just go into recovery, factory reset and then flash the ROM again (no reset in between).
I hope that answers any questions you may have

I have flashed CWM via RomManager multiple times, with no problems. You only brick your device if you flash CWM that is for other devices. You can't blame RomManager for your foolishness.
For install CWM via ROM manager you need stock rom with stock recovery and with root????

Help for mini-bricks
Like others, I wish I'd read this post before I hard-bricked my phone :crying:
In my case, I just selected the "Reboot into Recovery" option, where I planned to do a nandroid backup. The screen went black and I was hard-bricked.
Anyway, I thought this might be a good thread to repost the information that restored my galaxy mini to good health.
Remove the battery, SD card and sim card.
Hold down the "Download" key combination - Volume-down + Home + Power.
While continuing to hold all three down, insert the battery (almost impossible without a friend).
Continue to hold all three down, and in about a minute, you should get you into "Download" mode, from where you can use ODIN to re-flash your phone with a stock rom.
If this doesn't work at first, keep trying; I tried it several times without success, took it to a local techo who took it to a big city techo, and it was only when they both gave up that I tried this technique again in desperation - and fortunately this time it worked.
Also, the drama was not quite over yet for my phone. When I tried to flash a stock Gingerbread rom via Odin, it failed.
That was solved by first flashing ARM11boot_GT-S5570.tar (attached) in the "Boot" section (everything else blank except for TASS_V1 ops file, which is included in the standard rom). For more information, see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588892
After that, I successfully flashed stock Gingerbread. And finally installed CWM Recovery properly following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342190&highlight=cwm+recovery
BE WARNED: On the thread about ARM11boot_GT-S5570.tar, there is a warning from kitrax59:
be careful on flashing the bootloader buddy.. it can hard brick your phone.. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK..

I'm guessing that a lot of these problems have a similar cause to mine, where I saw a reference to ClockWorkMod Recovery, searched for that on Google Play, and Rom Manager was the only relevant result returned.
There is an excellent guide to installing CWM Recovery by Bunnybugs_007 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342190
Just wondering if there is a "sticky" function on xda? Making threads such as this one and Bunnybugs' more prominent would save a lot of heartache and hard bricks.

[ROM][FRUITCAKE] en.UK Stock 2.3.4 ROOTED - Made With ROM Factory

It appears that the package is broken. For the time being I have no way of remaking it. I hopefully soon will be able to make it again.
The other day I managed to get my hands on a UK ATRIX that was still running the official 2.3.4 rom (T-Mobile I think) so I stuck ROM Factory on it and made a fruitcake of it for your enjoyment.
As always with custom ROMs I am not responsible for anything you do to your device, you don't have to flash this if you don't want to!.
Also this is the first time I have used Rom Factory to do anything and I am completely unable to test it as the phone I made it from has an locked bootloader (does this matter?) so again flash with caution.
Features:
Rooted
No Webtop (Sorry )
Up to date Apps including super user
Here's a mirror on 4shared if anyone needs it

Yup. It is exactly that. It has no unique features other than the fact that it is the stock UK ROM that went missing at the same time as all of the file sharing websites in the form of a fruitcake.
Has anyone tried it to see if it works? I still have to phone (locked bootloader & It's not mine) I made it from (though not for much longer) and can have another go!
Thanks, I'll try it when I get back home.

Tried this yesterday. Had CM7 latest nightly running. Did a full wipe and clean install. But unfortunately, it kept booting into CM7 (not the one I had before flashing). I anyways tried logging into my Google account and the setup wizard force closed every time I tried. Had to revert to my previous setup
Not sure if I did anything wrong, I know the usual drill of installing custom ROMs.
Did anyone else give a try?

Very odd issue... Is it because the device I made it from has a locked bootloader? You say that the rom didn't flash (or did but not properly) what did the install script in CWM say?
Sorry I don't have the device any longer so I won't be able to do anything with re making the fruitcake :crying: as I have had to give it back.

The script said that the flash was successful. Also it said that I should not forget to wipe cache and data, which I did anyways. No errors in the install script.
Not sure if the zip had the original ROM, coz it was booting into CM7, which is obviously not what you are trying to do. I did a full wipe, 3 times, so I guess there is no possibility for it to boot into my previous installation of CM7 nightly.
I saw your PM. Thanks. I will try today if I get some time off work and let you know.

The I9000UKG3 is your modem(baseband), not your ROM (firmware), so don't worry about that. As long as you have signal, you're fine.
Before flashing a Jb ROM, do you factory reset, clear cache/dalvik? Is the screen problem right at the start? Do you restore your apps?

Ok, We'll start from the beginning then, You can get in download mode right?
Grab Odin KK4 without bootloaders, Corn kernel with Odin 1.85 and put the ROM (and Gapps) you wanna flash in the root of your internal SD. Flash KK4, boot up and make sure everything is fine. Once that's done, get back in download and flash Corn kernel.
From there, you can flash the ROM and the Gapps that go with it.
I believe you went through those steps already but hopefully we can find what's wrong by re-trying/reproducing the problem. Oh and don't restore any apps before trying it.
If that doesn't work, I'm thinking you might have the wrong Gapps or wrong bootloaders but first time I hear of a screen that doesn't work on JB but does on GB.
EDIT:
I just went through the thread to see that you already have KK4 and Corn on your phone. You don't need DesignGear to root, you can go in Corn's recovery to root your phone. Now, after re-reading, you said that sometimes it's iresponsive, what exactly do you mean by that? it takes a while to register your touch? locks up and you get no response for a few seconds?
Usually that's from lack of free ram. So a app sucking it all up. Have you tried JB (with the right Gapps) without restoring your apps?
PS.: You shouldn't restore your app with TiBu coming from GB, you can restore their data but should fresh download the apps from the market.

All right, im gonna flash aokp_captivatemtd_jb_milestone-1.zip with gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip, so, Turn off phone, enter cwm, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, flash aokp, flash gapps, fix permission and thats it right?
EDIT: I dont want to restore apps, i just want jb or ics, without that screen fail, the problem is that when i touch, it doesnt respond at all, but then 5 min later its works and then fail again, but just with the left side of the sceern....

Sounds good. Quite often you don't need to fix permission, I never had to do it.
If screen fails again, I'm starting to think it might be a hardware issue.

Edit, im not gonna instal or update any app, just let it like that and see what happend....so now the boot process is, at&t white logo. the pink horse of aokp (XD), and thats it, no i897 or i9000 bootloaders, and when you say ¨it may be a hardware issue¨ what did you mean with that?

Usually when you boot the phone, it shows SGH-897 but it doesn't matter, I could be wrong.
As for the hardware issue, just like some Sleep of Death (SoD) issue, it's something that a software can't fix, it's something broken within the phone (hardware). I don't know if it's the case here but it's always a possibility, especially if the phone was dropped before, the screen connector might need to be pushed back into place.

You can get Odin KK4 with bootloaders. There's a risk of bricking your phone when you flash bootloaders though. There are needed to be on ROMs that are GB and up but I think you already have them.
As for the hardware thing, like I mentioned before, it could be like SoDs, where the phone will randomly shut off when you're using a ISC/JB ROM.

Hi wolf,
First of all let me thank you for all the help you gave me, let me tell you that if it was a hardware problem, then, as here in the office sometimes bring several of these phones, i change it for one XD and now it Works , im runnign aokp 4.1.2 Milestone 1 .... now, if not too much trouble, as last favor I say, you know if JB 4.2.1 roms for the captivate that are for everyday use?
really, really thank you......

[Q] Greetings!

Hello!
This is my first time posting although I've been doing a little reading off and on. In order to save money, I bought an unlocked Captivate off eBay last fall, and I'm running it on StraighTalk. After doing some research on ways of removing the unwanted bloatware on my phone, I decided to try a custom ROM as well. I'd like a little advice or tips if you have any. Here are my plans:
First, I need to root the phone. Here's what I've found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...+the+captivate
Best way? New, or improved method?
Next, I was going to follow these instructions to customize my ROM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotat...&v=hadizqVkwn0
This seemed to be the best video tutorial for flashing to Jellybean. I found a Youtube video that shows the rooting process as well, but the kid doing it was very confused as to what the next step was. There was a lot of mumbling and shotty camera work.
I've never done anything like this before, but I'm very excited to give it a try. I like techy things, so this is a very interesting topic for my and could make for a fun new hobby!
Thanks in advance,
Courtney
So I went ahead with the root process. Everything seemed fine until I tried to install Superuser. It keeps failing to install. In recovery, it says "E:signature verification failed." Any ideas?

did u install CWM recovery? , you need a custom recovery for that to work.. if you do have cwm , try toggling signature verification in recovery , if that doesnt work,
read below

No, I didn't. The directions I followed didn't mention CWM recovery. I downloaded another superuser by ChainsDD, and it installed. Then, I installed Busybox per the instructions. So, I assume I don't have root? Seemed like everything went through just fine once I installed the other superuser app. What's the best way to determine if you have root?

Thanks for your help! I installed Titanium and it does seem that I have root. I did have ROM Manager by ClockworkMod installed on the phone before this process. Is that the same as CWM? Sorry, so very new to this!

I think you miss understood -- I got it to work. I have root.
My next step will be to flash CWM Recovery. Any advice here? I'm running 2.3.5 presently.

Okay. Flash the Corn 7 kernel. You will find it in the captivate development forum. You will still have a KK4 gingerbread system, but you will have CWM recovery, ability to try overclocking to 1200, and voodoo Sound which will make a huge difference in audio quality with your headphones/ear buds.
IMHO you should uninstall ROM manager. You will be able to access CWM either from power menu or key combination. It looks like a simple character based terminal, you use volume keys and power keys, or the 4 capacitive keys to navigate through menus. You can do full nandroid backups, clear caches, format partitions, and flash roms and updates in zip format - all with CWM recovery.
To access voodoo Sound controls, you need to install the free app from Google Play. If you want to support developer Supercurio, then buy the license key, although you don't need the license with Corn.
To access Overclocking in that ROM, you will need to install an app like No frills CPU control.
And KK4 with Corn 7 is the starting point for being able to upgrade to most JB roms.

If he wants to stay on gingerbread that's fine but I would recommend updating to jellybean if that's what he wants. In that case he should flash the corn kernel and then flash a cm10.1 nightly because cm10.1 will partition everything for jellybean and update the recovery. If then he wants all of the extra features: voodoo color, etc he can use either stratosk's semaphore or the unofficial semaphore for the captivate which has even more features. After that he can flash any ROM he wants although I would recommend staying with CM cause it the only one with nightly updates. Although if you want even more features I highly recommend the PAC ROM.
