[MOD] Modified NfcNci.apk to poll while screen is off. - Nexus 4 Android Development

I have modified the default polling mode of NfcService.java to poll for Nfc Tags even when the screen is off. This is done for the Nexus 4. To install move the old NfcNci.apk/odex from /system/app to keep just in case, and then just copy over the modified NfcNci.apk and change the permissions to 644. I used adb shell, and adb push to move and install the file in recovery mode, but any way should work. This is my first android development, so this may not work for everyone.
Update:
Just to clarify, this is made for stock 4.2.1
Update: 2/17/13
I have made a new version for stock 4.2.2. Just download copy to /system/app/NfcNci.apk and rename /system/app/NfcNci.odex file.

Great work. Moving to Android Development

I appreciate the work as I'm positive it'll help a lot of people, but I'm curious how this affects battery life. For anyone using it, have you noticed a significant drop in battery life?

I'm about to get it on my phone, will report on how it affects battery life later tomorrow.

Great work, thanks a lot. Don't suppose you could do a version that works without unlocking the screen just when waking the device? So it wouldn't work with screen off but would when you pressed the power button. If you know what I mean?

Hello, thank you for the work, but it does not work for me.
I use CyanogenMod 10.1, when I replace the modified file no longer works the NFC and NFC menu also disappears
An idea?
thank you

I just did this out myself and had similar issues on the jellytime rom.. To fix it you need to extract/pull original apk from your rom (either the original zip or your backup if you have one) and then overwrite the classes.dex file in to old apk with the classes.dex file out of CptanPanics apk (you can do this with any archive manager capable of opening a zip file!).
Flash you modded original apk file and it should then work fine
And thanks for the mod!

.odex? was that a typo? Surely your CM rom is de-odexed?
The file size sounds right, so assuming you did that correctly and pushed the apk to /system/app with adb; the next best thing to check would be that you have set the permissions of the apk to 644.. for example:
->adb remount
->adb shell
->su
->chmod 644 /system/app/NfcNci.apk
If that doesnt solve your problem, Im not sure that I can help without trying it out for myself. Also, make sure you have copied the classes.dex to and from the right apks and them pushed the original apk back!! Its easy to mix them up!

Reporting back with some preliminary battery life information: it's not looking too hot.
I've drained 35% in 3 hours. I have done absolutely nothing to the phone but let it sit. I'm going to have to revert back; this is too much drain for just a tiny bit of convenience.

For me NFC does not work while the phone is in deep sleep and I don't appear to be having serious battery drain. I am happy with the mod, it is exactly what I wanted, now I don't have to unlock the phone, just wake the device with power button then it works

Any chance of a version that works as normal but is silent. That's all I need

sorry, I made a typo, the name is classes.dex ...
I repeated the manipulations but it still does not ...

It's okay, I managed, good good goog, thank :good:

Have you left it sitting on an NFC tag? I have a tag under my desk for my home tag (Wi-Fi on, Bluetooth off, sound on, etc.). It's right next to my mouse pad and is where my phone sits by default.
Perhaps it was just an anomaly. I can give it another shot.

Do you want to get quick GPS lock in CM7

Yes, many people are still complain the GPS can't lock(maybe can see satellites) or very slow.
After i saw KarlHegbloom's suggestion to use AngryGPS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15692063&postcount=6283
But in the beginning i don't know how to let it run, so study and study.....
finally i got it
step1: Download gpsd from trigger build12 in here (gpsd in cm7 or build13 are not stable, it hard to lock, i don't why, maybe birgertime can tell what's the differents)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15696219&postcount=6289
step2:
update 0718 :
s0niqu3 made install apk for angrygps, it's very easy way than mine, you can try it,and directly to step4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15721652&postcount=13
manual way(mine): download Angrygps.apk in here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15695743&postcount=6288
Use root explore to replace gpsd in system\vendor\bin\
and put angrygps.apk in system\app and change permission
my setting (read check all, write only check first, execute no check), but someone say he need to check all. anyway you can try both.
Reboot, then angrygps, not angrybird is running.
if you are lucky, your gps become fantastic now.
if not. you should long click desktop(need ADW launch)
step3:Create custom shorcut-> chose your application -> Activities -> AngryGPS -> .AngryGPS
After this you will get a angrygps shortcut in desktop.
step4:
Run it and to config as your wish.
tip: I change setting-general setting-operation mode from standalone to msbased. and now i can lock in twenty seconds.
Please test GPS outdoor
BTW, in CM7 you can turn off gps and turn on, it's all ok.
Thanks atinm&birgertime&KarlHegbloom
Do you think having a custom kernel (Glitch's Kernel to be exact) changes anything?.
Im not getting locks
i didn't try this kernel. but if you can see satellites, then it should be ok

For Launcher Pro Users, you can add the shortcut to angrygps with:
long press home screen --> Shortcuts --> Activities --> AngryGps (pick the first one)
Also, when I first did this gps would not start for me. Nothing happened, no gps icon. I needed to change the permissions on gpsd to include execute and the reboot. Looking good now.
Also I am getting fast locks leaving it in standalone mode.

Seems just fine with maps.
I have not tested navigation.
Does this work with any MIUI builds?
Hey everyone,
So first, this mod seems to work quite well on my phone, admittedly I'm in shock at having locks in just a minute or so, and accuracy under ~10meters. I'll withold final judgment until I've used it for a couple of days.
In the meantime though, here's a modified version of AngryGPS.apk that will show up in your launcher drawer without the need of bettercut/adw/launcherpro/etc.
Its been re-signed by me, so the signature won't match the original version posted, so you must remove the original and clear all its data first.
If you installed it normally, just uninstall through manage applications, else if you pushed the app to /system/app then you need to do:
adb shell
su
cd /system/app
rm -r AngryGPS.apk
cd /
cd /data/data
rm -r com.android.angryGps
Anyway, thanks for the fix, and enjoy.
Cheers,
Whoa...fast.
16 feet accuracy inside.

[ROM]Incredible Smoke

Right! I've just ported the blindndumb rom Blind Smoke (Mooke OS) to the IncS and have been testing it for the last couple of days - works almost perfectly! (the only thing out if the button backlights - any help would be greatly appreciated!)
Credit where it's due:
I done very little work on this and really the credit has to go to szezso (for the 'Incredible v1.0' rom - the base for my port and a beautiful job all by itself (that in turn was based on CyanogenMod 7.2 rc2, so big hugs there too)) and to blindndumb for the Blind Smoke rom.
Oh also, the guys behind the kitchen. Totally awesome work and makes it a pleasure to port stuff!
Anyway, without further ado... Incredible Smoke!
http://www.mediafire.com/?6obt7c7i7mlw884
I'll try to do screen shots soon but a quick flick over to blindndumb's site has some good shots already (click here). It is a beautiful rom and has a load of really nice features. My new favourite!
Oh, and for the button lights there's this:
Download the attached zip (backligh_files.zip - credit to kimifan316 for the files!)
Install a terminal emulator from the play store.
Next, copy the files in the zip to system\etc
Now, go change the properties on both the files to include execute (in esfile explorer this is done via long press, properties, change then tick execute for all users).
Now launch your terminal app.
in here type:
cd system
cd etc
su
sh bklights_init.sh
This is only temporary until someone can help me fix it properly
Here's the video can't seem to embed it here somebody help

Install the superuser app and all should be well.
I have to say that the rom looks really nice and also very smooth.
I only can't manage to copy the files in the zip file to /system/etc.
When I do that I get a message that it has failed to copy.
It looks like I don't have the persmission to do that.
Does anyone know how to copy these files to /system/etc?
Good point about installing superuser - I forgot to mention it in the post. I'm still quite new at this but I'll try and stick superuser in by default with the next version...
Looks good , How about the battery life ?
Maestro, ensure you have installed superuser for root access and enabled writing to system. In es file explorer this is done by hitting settings, scrolling to the bottom, turning on root explorer and mount file system... Let me know if it still doesn't work.
thx a lot! it helped. I wasn't aware of the settings in es file explorer.
So the lights do work now.
Only thing I experience is a kind of a delay when light turn off and on. So when turning off the screen the buttons stay on for a few seconds and then turn off. Also when turning on the screen again the buttons will turn on after a few seconds. But the behaviour is not always the same.
But it's not a big deal cause they do work! I just wanted to share.
Thx again!

Cool, thanks for that. I've sorted out the naming bits in the next release but I'm still working on the backlights before I upload it. Also think I have the su access in there by default now too... Hopefully be able to upload soon.

[HOW TO] - Enable CRT animation in Jelly Bean on the N7

Noticed none of the current builds have the CRT animation enabled, thought I'd share how to turn it on. Please note that it is at times a bit buggy. For me it works about 8 out of 10 times.
What it is:
Note: 1 - This will work on any device and on any version of Android back to GB. (Obviously the Nexus specific tools wont work on anything other than the Nexus)
Note 2 - You will have to redo this every time you update your rom.
Here's the quick rundown -
First, you'll have to pull the framework-res.apk from your tablet.
This can be done via adb, but the easiest way would be to either use WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit or mskips Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT.
When asked what file to pull, type in "/system/framework/framework-res.apk" (without quotes)
Once you have that pulled, install this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432152
Follow the directions on how to use it in the thread.
Once you have decompiled the apk, you'll want to edit the "files-to-edit\framework-res.apk\res\values\bools.xml" file.
The value you want to change in the bools value is the "<bool name="config_animateScreenLights">true</bool>" change "true" to "false". I reccommend downloading Notepad++ to edit.
Make sure you save it. Once saved, recompile the apk using the tool you install, then create an update zip (I renamed mine to crtanimation.zip for ease).
Reboot into recovery, flash the zip, clear cache, reboot.
Tada!

They most likely don't know what CRT animation is, NOT why they might want to make changes to the system.
Nothing in the OP provides a hint as to what that is or what it does. To be honest, I'm not sure I know what it is. A quick search shows that it is enabled in a lot of ROMs but not what it actually is or does.

Okay... I get it... It enables animation effects when turning the device off, rather than just blanking the screen.

You can select from a number of effects, sounds for both when the device is turned on and off via the button. You have to hit the button for it to do it, but for the risk of modifying system files, this is easy and safe to do.

Except your solution is wakelock city on top of having to enable it as a device administrator. Sounds like you also have to hit the shortcut or use the app itself to get the desired effect versus it being naturally accomplished when hitting the power button/screen timeout. And if it doesn't work in ICS, not sure it will work on JB.

I asked the question "Why" because it seems a lot of trouble just to see your device (N7, in this case) turn off. I've done a great deal of modding to my ICS devices, but haven't really found much reason to mod a JB device. I know there are tons of boot animations which make your device really different when turned on, but having CRT just for turning off your device seems a waste of time.
Of course, this is only my opinion and I'm glad you figured out how to do this, but I still don't understand why!

[SystemUI/Framework-res]Pantech Burst Users.:D

A few member in the burst thread know about what I have done SystemUI wise to give us a little bit of that Stock ICS flare. After so I did the same with the framework-res. Well here is a thread dedicated just to that. I hope you enjoy. These do work! I use them myself. Screen shots shall be uploaded sooner or later for proof. Disclaimer: I am not responsible if something goes wrong. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP, just in case.
Below is my 4th revision of a SystemUI: Signal bar, bluetooth, wi-fi, silent, vibrate and battery is changed to stock ICS blue.
www.dropbox.com/s/3ippqv6698z5j7a/SystemUI4.4.apk
instructions: for ease do this.
Of course rename the file back to "SystemUI.apk".lol don't want a awkward situation. In the directory of where you would adb your device place this in the directory and navigate to the folder where said file would be located type.
- adb remount (remounts device and can give permissions)
- adb push SystemUI.apk /system/app/SystemUI.apk
--Should move accordingly. Then this.
- adb shell
- su
- reboot
SystemUI is finished!!!
Below is the modified framework-res. The toggle switches for like wifi and bluetooth in the settings menu is changed. The spinner icon for when your phone shuts off is changed. the scrubber when you use your volume control is changed. The USB, ADB, Dload/Uload is changed.
Download it.:https://www.dropbox.com/s/cw7bxsvljplwiwb/framework-res.apk
Instructions: Move the file to your directory where your android stuff is on your computer like for systemUI.
- adb remount
- adb push framework-res.apk /system/framwork/framework-res.apk
-- Should move!
- adb shell
- su
- reboot

I noticed that too.. I really do not know what happened at that point... Something may have went wrong when I was switching out the scrubbers... No idea. I will look into it when I get home from work. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No inconvenience, just wanted to mention it in case you hadn't seen it and want to fix it.
Looks like the bar is not in the same place on the Y axis as the original, and it's redrawing a blank page after looping, which causes the jump. guessing

The download is the original. I believe it is just a issue with the phone because when I was tinkering with drop down alittle bit it started that. And I will definitely look into fixing it. It isn't a major issue. I mean. I never pay attention I just look for complete and not installed lol. At the moment I'm working on changing apk icons for our phone and editing the framework for the dialer. It is really ugly in my opinion.

Actually the stock dialer (and phone.apk, incoming call screen, etc.) will not scale to my resolution (192dpi), so if you have a way to fix this, it would be major! Using Go Contacts (and dialer) EX as a substitute, which works but is very slow.

Get exDialer and get the ICS theme for it. I like it alot better in my opinion. And I got a request to cook up a rom. I'm implicating a lot of the stuff you have seen throughout the thread. Stock ICS apps, my systemUI and framework.
Should have the ROM uploaded sometime today!

Yes that's what I have but it is very slow. Loading the dialer/phone app is very, very slow, same for contacts.
While you're building something new, the AOSP lock screen would be killer, and the dialer & phone apps need to be reverted to stock. Those are some of the biggest problems with the Burst stock ICS IMHO.

I actually found where our lockscreen lurks. Took me 4 hours to find it. And the dialer and contacts... I have the Stock ics apps for it.. I have tried alot of ways. But I can not get them to work to save my life.
And I'm actually done building. Just a matter of uploading the rom.
Stock ICS contacts and dialer. Ours has so much that they do not so it will be tricky to revert but I will keep fooling with photoshop and see what I can do.

[Boot Animation] Black Ops II Boot Animation **11/8/14 UPDATE** (Pick a flavor)

UPDATE:
Links have been replaced with a zip of all the sizes and versions I made. You will need to unzip the file you download, open the folder for your resolution and you will find the zipped file ready to go for your needs. The originals are also included for anyone who wants to do their own tweaking, etc. Sorry for any delays. Hope you guys enjoy.
I managed to find a little free time this holiday season and created a boot animation out of the new Call of Duty Black Ops II intro. I don't get a lot of free time outside of work and my family or I would spend more time doing more animations. However, I know this is late since the game came out last month. But here are the many different resolutions, and choices of landscape or portrait animations. A little preview is in order to start things off:
Landscape:
Portrait Versions:
Now, on to the good stuff.
Here are links to download one of the many flavors that best suits your device and the basic instructions. I tried to include the most popular screen sizes as well as include a download for the actual video's and files I made / used to create these animations.
ANIMATIONS:
Landscape:
All sizes
Portrait:
All sizes
Portrait Wrap:
All sizes
DISCLAIMER:
If you mess something up, do a search or speak up, someone or I will help. Chances are, others have had similar problems. However, I am not responsible for damages because you cannot read or took a mallet to your phone in frustration.
Also, anyone who wants to reuse/share/distribute/tweak these, go right ahead. That's why I included the original files for d/l. I do not mind, just post that the originals were found on XDA and posted by me, Crackanug. It's the honor system, use it and enjoy it.
If you need detailed instructions, there are tons of threads out there designed to help with boot animations. However, if you are having a very hard time getting any of these to work, post up, and I will try to help or just shoot me a PM.
SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download the appropriate resolution for your device.
2. Change the name of the "zip" file to whatever name your phone uses for its animations. (i.e.: "bootanimation.zip" "VZW_bootanimation.zip" etc.)
3. Change the name of the audio file to whatever name your phone uses as well. (i.e.: "android_audio.mp3" "Verizon_Thunderbolt_3sec.mp3" SPC_animation_final.mp3" etc)
4. Copy the zip file and mp3 to your phone, doesn't matter if it's via USB cable to SDCARD, using ADB to push the file, or using your phone's browser to download the file directly from the link.
5. Copy, move, or place said files you downloaded and renamed into the directory where your boot animations are stored. Typically for most phones the directories are: /system/media - /data/local - or in most HTC phones /system/customize/resource/
SAMSUNG OWNERS:
Go to this thread if your boot plays without sound, or does not work at all.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063280
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Make sure to backup your old/stock boot animation if you haven't already done so. The easiest way is to use your favorite file explorer to rename the old boot animation to something like: "bootanimation.zip.bak" same goes for the mp3 file, just add the extension ".bak" after the mp3 extension. BOOM! Done.
HELPFUL HINTS:
I have included two versions of audio files for the animations, one is the short version and one is a slightly modified longer version. If the audio is finishing way ahead of the video, try the longer "v2" audio file. If you are not satisfied with those results, there is one more thing you can try. Simply d/l the next resolution down, modify the "desc.txt" file contained within the zip to match your devices resolution. This will allow the animation to run smoother/faster and the phone will resize everything to the correct resolution all on its own. Then try either audio clip.
One more thing, if you find that the audio doesn't play, or there is an issue where neither the animation nor the audio play. Check to see if you need to modify your "default.xml" file located in the directory: /system/customize/CID. First backup the original file, then open the file in a text editor and change the following code located near the bottom of the file to match the name of your boot animation and its location. Same goes for the audio. Here is an example:
Code:
<BootConfiguration>
<BootAnimation animation="/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip"
audio="/system/customize/resource/android_audio.mp3" audiostart="part2" />
</BootConfiguration>
If you are still having problems, again, post a question.
Now, I better go buy the wife some flowers.
ENJOY!

What directory does your animations go in or are you using? I am not familiar with Samsung devices, hope you don't mind if I pick your brain a bit.

Same question as above, also, could you post a copy of the contents of your "default.xml" file? Again, I am not very familiar with Samsung phones, or if it even utilizes the default.xml file.

The last few boots I made turned out to be popular and everyone kept asking for larger file types and the source material. I figured I would just beat them to the punch.

If there is no pre-existing audio file contained within the /system/media directory, try placing the audio file provided in the first post within the same directory titled, "android_audio.mp3". If the audio still does not work, or this is what you have been experiencing. It is possible the maker of your rom has disabled boot sounds or it is a samsung thing (not sure which). However, I found a post from user vamsee417 who has included a couple files you place in the /system/bin directory and change the permissions to rwx,r-x,r-x for both files. The original post is below, but I have also uploaded the two files incase anyone else needs them. Keep in mind, these files are for an older model Samsung, so I am not sure if they really will work or if they might mess something up on your phone. I suggest doing a search for your model phone regarding how to enable boot sounds or making a back up of the original file in /system/bin (if there is one) before copying the new ones in.

Yeah... I forgot about that. If you right click on the link and choose "save as" it will avoid the streaming thing and download the files.

tried both options to fix the audio and i can't get it to work. renamed it both to android_audio.mp3 and boot_audio.mp3 set the correct permissions, installed the .bin files from the .zip u provided and still can't get audio to work. boot animation works fine. just no audio. couldnt find a default.xml to look in to edit. not sure if i should just create one and add the lines or how else to fix it. im running task's aokp 4.1.2 12/2 version.

Thanks for the info, I will do a little searching and see if a solution can be found. Gimme just a little bit on Sunday to see what I can find.
This animation looks beautiful, however I'm having some trouble with it...
I installed it on my DROID RAZR MAXX, with the 540x960 resolution.. The device boots correctly, the animation starts playing, but when it gets to the point of the B&W old lady, it suddenly freezes for a couple seconds, and then continues to play in a very slow frame rate like 1 FPS..
If I install one of a lower resolution and mod the desc file, will it work?
I'm unable to download the audios from phone and computer, plz help

Yes, by modifying the desc.txt file. It will automatically resize the smaller sized photos to your screen resolution. In turn, it should speed up the animation. If you run into more problems, let me know.

The files should now download instead of stream, or ask if you want to download or stream. The only exception is Microsoft Internet Explorer. You will have to "right click" on the link and choose "save as" from the drop down box.
By any chance did u happen to get any light on the sound issue or maybe another place to put the .mp3 file to get it to work?

I havent had a chance to look into it further, yet. I just had a slight mishap and perma-bricked my Thunderbolt and finally got a new phone yesterday. I have been a little sidetracked working on gaining s-off with the new device, but I have not forgotten about this. Just bear with me till after Christmas when family stuff dies down as well. :good:
