Why did Verizon choose to disable Wireless Charging capability? - Galaxy Note II Accessories

We all know that Verizon has made some pretty asinine decisons over the years, especially in regards to eliminating certain funtionality and features on their phones.... but for the life of me I cannot figure out why they would choose to essentially "cover up" the wireless charging capabilities of this great phone!
Do they actually NOT want to make a boatload of ca$h on special NFC/wireless charging battery covers and charging mats???!!!
There is no rationale behind this that I can think of whatsoever!
In case anyone wants to know the reason for my frustration... the Verizon version of the Note II has an inner cover that covers the wireless charging contacts (the inner cover is what is exposed when the battery cover is removed). The AT&T version has fully functional wireless charging capability out of the box...minus the battery cover & charging mat.
This problem can be remedied with a little tinkerinh which involves removing this inner cover, but the sad thing is that none of this extra work should even be necessary. Plus... wouldn't it have actually been more cost effective for Samsung & the carriers to use the same components wherever possible? This was an unnecessary variance from what should hve been the standard.
Just pretty crappy that this flagship device is missing this wireless charging feature that continues to grow in popularity industry wide.
...Maybe Verizon is counting on the micro-USB port life expectancy being just about when the warranty is expired so they can make their money on people needing new phones before they're due for an upgrade!
Sorry guys... had to vent. I definitely have a Love-Hate relationship with VZW!

wow no kidding

I was actually in the store to hear first hand why. A customer coming from an iphone (he announced) was interested in the Note 2. His friend had the ATT version and he was excited to have a phone that could do wireless charging.
customer: I want to get the note 2, does it come with the wireless charging accessories or do I have to buy them separate?
verizon salesguy: The Note 2 doesn't have wireless charging built in, but the New Droid DNA does, let me show you.
customer: okay!
word for word. So frustrating to see their evil BS work. They make money licensing the "DROID" name so they make more money from droid phones. Horse droppings.

To be fair doesn't it take about a decade to charge the note 2 wirelessly?
I don't like using 1a chargers on mine because they take so much longer than the stock one and as far as I know wireless charging supplies even less than that.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app

I never thought about the Droid DNA being a possible reason for them to intentionally disable this feature, but knowing how VZW likes to promote the Droid line as the preferred choice, that does make sense.
I agree that wireless charging a 3100mAh battery will take a lot longer. I would think most people would use it as a bedside charger while they're sleeping, or at work, if they have an office job.
It would be very convenient to not have to fumble with a micro USB connector, especially when lighting is poor, or when you're picking your phone up every several minutes while at work.

Verizon has made it clear that the note is not their flagship device, but in fact the dna is.

I use wireless charging with my AT&T N2 and it charges from 40% in a couple hours.. I only charge at night when im sleeping though so as long as it charges within 6 hours I could care less.. and I wake up at the 4 hour mark and its at 100% so its fast enough for me... and slower charging is actually better for the battery. I understand if you needed a quick pick me up why it wouldnt be good.. but im a HEAVY user and with the N2 and its massive battery, ive never needed to charge it during the day... so for my needs, its perfect.
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy Note II /w wireless charging.

At the verizon I went to my rep tried the same thing on me. I went in specifically for the n2. He asked me if I had seen the dna, I said I heard of it and saw a couple of reviews on it. He asked if I wouod be interested in that instead. I said does it have a 3100mah battery, a stylus, removable battery or a micro sd slot... he said no. I said might as well get an iphone5 if thats the case. I came in for the n2 and only the n2.... couldnt be happier...... fyi. I finally convinced my wife to ditch her icrap5 and take over my s3

Well that explains the extra time until they released it. I wonder if the contacts are still there under the plastic?
Also, why don't they put wireless chargers in dash mounts?? Seems like a no brainier there.

There are a couple youtube videos showing what needs to be done to re-enable the wireless charging. The contacts are definitely there under the freaking plastic cover. They do not appear to be "raised" contacts like on the AT&T version or the Galaxy S3, but they are indeed there.

Sprint version does not have it either.
Maybe the cdma versions were built in the same place
swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2

Does anyone know what that round connector is on the AT&T version between the NFC contacts and wireless charging contacts?
What else did Verizon screw us out of??!!??

If I'm not mistaking the one on the left is the International version and I believe the round connector might be for the radio.

External antenna connection... used for testing purposes.

You can actually do 2 things.
1) Buy the housing from the ATT/International version and replace the VZW one with extreme ease, and then you can solder on contacts and make yourself a Qi compatible back cover.
2) Just get some copper tape (I think is what he used) and then get the Palm Touchstone or whatever and the Palm door and do the same minus replacing the housing.

Just an idea, but do you think it's possible to drill a couple of precise holes through the thin plastic inner cover to gain access to the contacts directly underneath? And then drop in some spring pins?

Yes if you do it really careful and do not damage the circuit beneath. ..there is a video on YouTube showing that it does work. .

ok first of all vzw reps do not sell the dna over the note2 because they get paid more and vzw hasnt asked them to offer the note2 over the dna, what most likely happened is a biased opinion of a rep, a lot of reps in my store for some reason like the dna more, there are reasons its better but but there also reasons its not, and on the issue of the charging who knows why vzw didnt include it, but the s3 wireless charging took a while to come out too, just be interesting how they do it though since pins are covered.

Not having access to the wireless charging prongs really REALLY angered me when I took the back cover off my brand new Note 2. After seeing the international version, I was all excited to implement magnetic charging. I was shocked and angered when I didn't see the prongs!! Will have to decide if I want to crack the phone open and figure out an alternative solution....the frustration!

Lapdock 100

I was considering buying the Lapdock 100 today from AT&T or Sprint, since Verizon doesn't have it yet.
Has anyone else done this? I heard it would work for the Bionic, but then their little ** said it may need a software update. If anyone has any insight, please let me know, its either that new lapdock for $250, or my friends selling me his regular bionic lapdock for $200...
Or I just go buy an Asus EEE Transformer or Galaxt Tab lol

i will bump this. picked up my lapdock 100 for 168 (work discount). The bionic DOES fit in the little slot, even with the extended battery, its very tight though. I can see one modding this by taking the rubber out so itll fit better. No pic because i dont have a cam besides my phone but i have reg pics. has built in speakers, and i hooked up a wireless logitech mouse to it. when i went in they tried to sell me the bionic specific one that cost 100 dollars more i think, but i said i wanted the 100 thats 200 bucks. they didnt know if it would work or not, but they unplugged the one on the sales floor and it started right up. Right now my only gripe is the mousepad feels a little flimsy, but that was easily solved with a wireless mouse.

I picked one up for my wife yesterday for her Bionic. This thing is awesome.
One thing I didn't realize is that it doesn't have a headphone jack. And having to sync a bluetooth headset quickly wasn't going to be good for answering a phone call privately. But I discovered that you can still plug in a headset into the Bionic's headset jack while it is connected to the lapdock and still be able to place the phone into the cradle in the back.
This thing just made my wife's Bionic that much cooler and useful.

I'm not having this problem, yet. been using since yesterday afternoon. I haven't had any phone calls since I've started using it...so I don't know if there are problems related with that...
I noticed that the problem occurs most often when I put the Bionic into the holder in the back. I don't know why that is though. This morning I had trouble with it but I just tried again and it worked but I didn't put the Bionic into the holder.
Hopefully the update will make it more compatible.

Maybe, if you can let me know if you have the same problem when you place the bionic into the rear holder. I'm not sure if the rubber part touching the screen has anything to do with it.

I picked up the Lapdock 100 yesterday. It's been working great and I haven't noticed any issues. I do get the unrecognized usb device icon at the top of the screen when nothing is plugged into the usb ports. When I plug something into the usb port it is recognized and runs as I would expect it.

I have performed all of these hacks and it makes for a vary smooth running netbook
it does not have a headphone jack but you can still plug headphones into your phone and up in the corner of the lapdock you can switch the sound to the phone. the 100 is junk compaired to the bionic one. the 100 is all cheap plastic and the bionic one is aluminum and just looks so mutch better. i have the bionic one. the razr will also fit in that as well.
I was debating this too but honestly I think I'm gonna go for the Transformer Prime, because I need a new laptop but I can't afford to buy more than one extra item right now in that price range, and now that there is at least a simple IDE for coding Java made for tablets, I have no reason to get a new laptop when i can put the keyboard on the prime. I'd love the lapdock because I wouldn't have to pay extra for monthly data but in my case I just need something closer to an actual computer and I think the prime might cover that a little more than the lapdock. IDK i've never used the lapdock.
Nice pictures Cool_story_bro, I was wondering if you tried plugging in an external HD to one of those USB ports.
Thanks!
I purchased one of the 100 docks from a Verizon Wireless store yesterday. I was forced to pay the full 199.99 price, as I was told that my corporate discount could not be used with this device. (Bummer) So far it has met or exceeded all of my expectations. I have ran into the low memory error when I had too many firefox tabs open, but overall I am impressed. I love the fact that it will basically replace my need for a netbook. With some productive Android apps, as well as some nice web apps bookmarked, I am ready to give this thing a true run. BTW, I am posting this response using the dock and it's keyboard.
Edit: Recent Bionic OTA has practically done away with low memory error.

I had mine a week when it started doing the same. I noticed that if I put the phone in the slot in the back it would happen. If I left the phone on the table connected everything was fine. I now use a sticky jelly pad and lay the bionic flat over the slot. (just a little paranoid about it breaking again)

So...you're going to mod the phone and defeat the waterproofing and then if because of your carelessness it gets wet you will have AT&T replace it even though it was your fault. And people wonder why phone companies lock bootloaders and stuff.

No, I have never have had water damage on a phone and don't plan to(see my sig to see how many devices I have had and not a single problem). I highly doubt it will happen so I would rather have a feature like wireless charging over something I will never use like waterproof. If it does get wet I will think about what I should do, I do have insurance so I can always use that. If AT&T offers to replace it I will let them but I do not plan on lying, if it comes up I will let them know how the water got in.

First off it isn't modded, there is an insert in it... I will be honest with AT&T but will explain I have water damage. The point is that if, in your own scenario, the phone gets water damaged, it will have been your own fault. You defeated the water-resistance. Getting AT$T to replace it is unfair the same as if you had damaged the phone by flashing a custom ROM on it. Too many people do these things and then somehow (whether by deceit or not) get AT$T to replace their phone leaving the rest of us to have to pick up the tab for it in higher prices or locked bootloaders. If you are using XDA then you should know that what you are doing to your phone is probably not covered by the manufacturer defect part of your warranty. Accept that responsibility if something goes wrong and don't try to pass it onto the carrier. I have had two phones replaced under warranty since 2010. Both were rooted and one was running a custom ROM. Both suffered from random shutdowns, which were later acknowledged to be a defect. Had they failed due to something I caused I would have just sucked it up and bought another phone. Not because I'm better than anyone else, but because I take responsibility for my actions. I hope you do too.:good:

I agree but you are missing my point... I WILL tell them exactly what happened if they say tough then I will use my insurance to replace, if they replace them I will be happy. I have always been an honest person when it comes to this stuff and I do not plan on lying now. Usually the AT&T reps will work with you... So far I have had AWESOME service by them.
I doubt it will even happen though so I am not worried
btw AT&T is suppose to reimage phones before sending them out... it is their normal process. And if you have modded your phone and returned it you should restore to factory defaults either way. Not saying that it is ok but just say it is lazy not to.

It's not a waterproof phone, it's a water-resistant phone, and there is a huge HUGE difference.
Also, with respect to these wireless chargers and having to remove the stock battery cover to do it, are you planning to charge your Active wirelessly under water anytime soon?
If not then there's no issue with this methodology whatsoever.

Water-resistant because it can't stay in that environment permanently, just for short periods of time (with fully drying off between "dunkings" as well).
Water can and will get into most anything given enough time, so this is just highly resistant to water "infiltration" one could say, but that's only if the battery cover is properly attached/latched in place.
of course
of course you can go ebay ,or some online store. such aulola.com

Official Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S-View Wireless Charging Cover (Where to buy?))

So I have seen all the posts for the cases but can't seem to find anywhere in the US that has any info on when they will be available. Yeah I'm really disappointed with the lack of accessories! I don't want to buy a regular case and then turn around and purchase a wireless charging case 2-3 weeks later.... Ended up selling my AT&T Note 3 in favor of the T-mo n900t, already running a custom rom and on att lte
I'm sorta miffed, too. I think they want to see how the phone will do before they start churning out accessories. I can't figure out why they don't add features without changing the form factor, at least as far as legacy compatibility is concerned.
I ordered a $4 TPU case and a Skinomi (wet application) screen protector. I like to have a cheap (or just durable) backup case option for camping, and for the possibility of getting a new device under insurance because of theft or total destruction. But still, this is a lot of weeks to be waiting for a feature included on their previous release. And for the time being: this (as of 10 Oct, 2013) http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Qi-Wireless-charging-Receiver-Charger-Adapter-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3-III-/321228364804?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Chargers&hash=item4acab3dc04

I have to apologize for the long links, sort of. I personally would rather read at least part of them before I click on them, especially on a forum as popular a XDA.

only much easier without having to tap into the USB port. I got two for my "old" S3 for about US$12 each. If my measurements are right, I'm just going to snip the space between the two contacts and stick it in sideways on the Note3 battery, slightly too high, but not enough to let the coils be too off. I usually don't post my hacks, but if this one works and does it before anything gets released, or if everything released is still as expensive as it is now, I might.

So, really essentially, inductive charging is spinning magnets hopping up a copper coil so much it sends the extra energy into the battery as an electrical charge (I imagine with some other metals it might've been heat). Hopefully the coil doesn't have to be too precisely placed to get enough charge.
I'm seriously thinking about investing in Neodymium mining.
I aslo went to the Tmo store today. It's a little one. They had one S-View cover without inductive charging for US$60. The guy, who had one (no Qi) on his new Note3, indicated on a spreadsheet on the "register" screen that the inductive charging ones will be $70 only at the Sammy (Tmo has dedicated Samsung centers)) stores, and I only saw black (BLK).
I really want to see what color the "red" one is. I saw it listed as "pink" somewhere, but I imagine they might have had it mixed up with the light pink (more of a dirt-magnet than the white IMHO) because a lot of the photos of them look rather pinkish or maroonish. I've seen a couple of shots of branded flip covers that look really (really) red, some that look almost brick, and of course a bunch I might call magenta only because I think it's a word to describe a color without another descriptor (that Tmo borrowed because actually calling it what it is, Hot Pink, completely alienates about 50% of its clientele).
Anyone see any color out there?

wondering whether to cancel mobilefun order as they have again postponed delivery saying stocks coming 31st oct. 2nd time they have postponed the dates. looks like they are taking the piss, stating earlier dates to get more orders when all websites dont have any confirmed date.
So please excuse my ignorance here, but could I just buy one of those inductive charge stickers made for the note 3 and use that with any back plate? Just get any Qi charger for it to work with? Thanks all. New to the whole inductive charger thing.

yes you could but the s view functions wouldnt work with the 2 pin receivers and i dont know if it will even work with the 3 pin receivers.
please note that the n3 has 3 ins at the back near the wireless charging and 2 for nfc but of the 3 pins only top 2 are for wireless charging and the third is for s view functions colour changing of screen etc as far as my info goes.
will let you know in a few days as i have orders pending delivery for official and generic types and will test them out with several of my wireless chargers. my orders have been delayed 2-3 times already and dont know when they will come as have placed them a while back. it doesnt seem to be in stock anywhere.
You are correct.
You are correct i got one of the stickers and a wireless charger and have the regular s-view case and the case no longer works, im wondering if i can somehow solder the contacts togeter without messing it up but for 11 bucks the wireless charging does work pretty well. Through the galaxy charge app im getting around 650 not the 1800 i would get from the 3.0. However i dont have to worry about plugging it in or messing up my port now. will keep you informed.

So the foil trick did not work, or at least i could not get it to work as the foil yanked off one of the contacts on the charger. It looks like the sview uses the bottom two and the charger uses the top two. I sometimes wish i never watched macgyver as a kid. But it still works just no sview functions but i really didnt use it much anyways as you are stuck with stock samsung music apps.

Mind you, there is a warning that it may interfere with NFC and S-View functions of the Note 4!

Output is just 600mA... That's a piece of crap and really expensive... I always get 1000mA pads for $8-$12 on ebay... (usually are blue too, but with 1000mA... Honestly... Done it Already for the Note 2 & 3... Still waiting this year for them to show up on ebay...As soon as I see them, will post link... Promess... Don't buy those...
Here is a spare one I have as proof...

Too bad stock limits charging to 460mA. With cm or different kernel can bump that up to about 700mA. I wish the phones could go up to 1000mA when wirelessly charging.

Hmmm, if what you are saying is correct, then except for price I didn't do so bad! I'm not sure if I will be flashing any custom ROMs or kernels, but it is something to consider just to get wireless charging a little faster. Why is there a limit, is it due to safety issues?

Actually there was a Kernel for the Note 2 that was modified to 850mA... Anyway... That's a really good question about the limit... Also, if you get the 1000mA pad you also have to make sure that the charging station also gets to at least 1000mA... (almost all of the cheap ones on Ebay also go up to 1000mA) But that's something to consider... In case you get the 1000mA receiver pad but your station is just 700mA...
Also @RaymondPJR...
If you got it thru amazon, you can just cancel order... Go to my orders on Amazon and you will se a Cancel button... Specifically on orders that will not ship until later... (credit card is also not charged until shipment) Just a hint that you probably already know... in case you really want to cancel...
I am 100% sure the pads I am talking about will show up really soon on ebay. I am a huge fan of wireless charging... Lol

Back in the day I did my own Wireless charging mod for my S3 and bought a receiver pad from Verizon. It was for one of the Lumias, I think. It shouldn't be too hard to find out what it's limit is, although I suspect it would be at the lower level. I think I'll just keep the order, however, I don't mind what Ive paid for it.

You know how Sammy is. The phones accessories aren't compatible with each other (For money of course). The batteries are all different shapes and sizes so that no battery can be used on another Galaxy phone.
So no, they aren't compatible.

Beware of FAKE Galaxy Note 4

Hi folks, this is my first post on this forum and I thought I’d share with you a recent misadventure of mine.
Since the Galaxy Note 4 is currently not being sold without a contract in my area, it created some kind of a parallel market for people getting the device by using their actual contract and then reselling it on classifieds websites like craigslist or kijiji.
Being the impulsive buyer that I am, I took the chance of buying one from one of those people. I met the guy in a parking lot, inspected the device quickly but still took the time to google the model number that was showed in the About Phone screen which checked out ok. It turns out I should have paid attention to more than the model number… As it turns out, I bought a fake Galaxy Note 4 for the full price of a genuine one.
What first tipped me off was when I got home I opened the box and saw that the phone apparently turned itself back on during transport and was displaying this screen:

I thought to myself “Uh oh… this is not good”. A hard reboot made it disappear but after investigating, i realized that what I had in my hand was a very good knock off of Samsung’s famous Galaxy Note 4.
Needless to say, the seller was not reachable anymore….So to make a long story short, I ended up going to the store and bought a brand new (genuine) one that I had to put on a contract.
So now that I have the two devices in my hands, I thought of making a list of differences and post them here. It is to be noted that the real one that I bought is the SM-N910W8 which is the canadian version, while the fake one is labeled as the SM-N910F which I believe would refer to the US version. So keep in mind that some of these differences might be due to the different geographical versions that I have….but I doubt it. Feel free to correct me.
So here it is:
The Box: the main difference that I noticed was that the real one had a mention that it was printed in Vietnam. The fake one didn’t mention any printed location. The box’s color is closer to beige than white on the fake one.
On the first look: they appear to be carbon copies, although the fake one seems to be of a less bring white than the real one. But you would need to have the two sitting next to each other to notice this.
The battery: Other than text layout, the differences are that the real one states that it’s made in korea but assembled in Vietnam while the fake one is made in Japan. The voltage too is slightly different, 3.85v for the real one, 3.7 for the fake.
Behind the cover: there are a few noticeable differences here, first the real one has some kind of a small white square insert behind the battery while the fake doesn’t. Also there is some greenish color on the SIM and SDCARD bezels on the fake one while the real one’s are silver. But the dead giveaway here is that on the fake one, the IMEI number printed on the back sticker did not even match the one in the About Phone screen in settings.
The Cover: the inside of the cover’s colours don’t quite match as you can see here
Apps & OS: This is where the differences become more obvious. First of all the fake one doesn’t have KNOX and all the samsung bloatware. Also, some stupid misspellings are visible here and there, like for instance instead of Messages it says Messagin. Also, instead of Internet it says Browser.
The About Phone/Device screen in settings: Again, the differences here are obvious. First of all the real one has a white and blue theme and is labeled About Device while the fake one as an older black and white theme and is labeled About Phone. Then that’s where you can clearly see that the Baseband version is not an original Samsung one. Same thing for the Kernel.
Other than that, I noticed that the two capacitive buttons on each side of the home button don’t seem to light up on the fake one. And generally speaking, the fake one is slower than the real one. I didn’t go as far as running some benchmark apps on it but I am sure it would not score anywhere near the real Samsung Note 4.
Sorry man that really sucks. Good for posting the info and glad you have a real phone. Lessons learned, maybe the hard way but no one got hurt....unless you run into that guy again :/

Guys I'm devastated by this myself as I just got one myself. I thought I was going to get a gift for my wife and found out from this post that this is a fake Note 4 I'm holding in my hand. This is just too unfair to the world. Just not right for these crooks to do something like that. Can we contact our local police department if we have their number?
What a sad sad day
Bummer for you, but no news to me to be honest, every popular model have Chinese fakes within weeks after release. Same with Iphone, Galaxy S5 etc etc. Lots of them on ebay and other online markets. And yes they are very easy to identify when you turn them on. If you buy one on a parking lot and don't switch it on and test it with a SIM, before handing money you ask for being ripped off. When ordering online and you are not able to test make sure you use a credit card so you some form of insurance. Kind of confused people still fall for these clones. It's common knowledge.

Does if have a AMOLED screen too? If not i would have regonized it in a sec, i buy Samsung phones mostly for the amazing screen The fake note 3 i almost bought (in the netherlands) had a lower resolution too. This fake note 4 dont have a 1440p screen i guess, more like 1080p or even 720p...
Check aliexpress note 4 for 150 dollars ... your fake one is in bad french "funny"
I feel your pain and I am sorry for you.
When the Galaxy S3 was released, the market everywhere in the world was flooded with fake devices very quickly. I created an app that was able to identify fake S3 and report it to the user. It became quite popular on Play Store with 50k+ downloads.
I think it is about time I create something similar for the Note 4. It may not be much, but it will help users like you instantly identity fake devices regardless of what they look like on the outside.

I think it is about time I create something similar for the Note 4. It may not be much, but it will help users like you instantly identity fake devices regardless of what they look like on the outside.

That would be a wonderful idea!
Best method to know original is to go to download mode volume down + home key + power button & check the knox status

Oh man.... That's suck... You should have bought on Amazon, which is protected by A to Z policy...
I can't even imagine your frustration... Is there any possible way you can contact the seller?
Either way, great post to let everyone to know about the fake note 4...

Most them fakes don't even have a proper download mode. My sister got scammed with a fake s4 and the download combination drops it into recovery which, apart from the crappy screen, were dead giveaways for me.
Yup that's the exact way to differentiate.Sad op was unaware & suffered the loss

This reminds us. If the deal is just too good to be true, it's too good to be true.

I am selling my Note4 BNIB & I am selling it from my home address with proof of purchase & also proof of identity.
In the UK lots of people are getting caught by people that later report it stolen to collect the insurance, sometimes months later your handset gets blocked.
They always want to meet up in parking lots ETC
It's good advice to never buy a phone somewhere like that.
Sorry to hear you learned the hard way.
Out of curiosity, did you buy this from Toronto/Mississauga? There was an ad on Kijiji that was selling SM-N910F and I offered him $650. He didn't even hostage to take it. He had asked me to meet him at a parking lot as well.
