[Q] Strange problem with headphone jack - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a strange problem with an i9000 i got second hand.
The phone would not go to headset mode with normal headphones (without mic).
It would sometimes go to headset mode with headphones that have a mic (usually after making a call), but would go in and out of headset mode, stopping music and video playback.
When i start a call i would hear through the phone speaker for about 2 seconds and then it would go to headset mode (meaning silence). Then if i connect stereo headphones i can hear the other person, but the phone would freeze. if i connect a headset (with mic) then everything is ok (audio through headset).
What i have ALREADY tried:
Performed a software cleanup (as well as formatted the internal SD and tried a lot of ROMS and kernels).
Replaced the headphone jack.
Cleaned the contacts where the headphone jack replacement connects on the board.
Still the same problem.
I have no warranty on the phone.
Any ideas?

No one?

Please help, my phone is unusable.

Hmm i'm not sure but I think it's a hardware problem.

I think so too, but i have already replaced the headphone jack.
Could it be on the board itself?
Is there an app or a mod i can use to force headset/speaker mode?

I've never heard of such an app, so I don't know if there's one.

Why does my phone ring with headphones inserted?

If I receive a call while I have headphones connected through the USB connector the ringer sounds through the phone speaker as well as the headphones (Normal profile). On every other phone I've had, inserting headphones into a jack socket mutes the external speaker.
Is this peculiar to the S730/Wings or the custom USB connector? Is there a fix or hack for it?
I could put the phone on vibrate but then I wouldn't hear the ringtone through the headphones - or probably remember to switch back to Normal when finished!

thats odd, mine just rings thru the headphones, not the phone speaker.
sometimes the music comes out of the speakers eventhough the headphones are plugged in. this is very stupid when im in the bus or train....
it suddenly happens and cant be cured (need to restart)
how can i avoid this?

The ExtUSB port is designed with a metal contact on the square side (on the "back" of the port) to detect the headphones. Make sure that the contact is made. This may or may not be the problem; but it's a good starting point.
I'm thinking not in my case because the ext speaker is muted for music but an incoming call will activate it?
It sounds like something software related but I don't know where to look.
I had a look at a friend's Kaiser yesterday and that does exactly the same thing (and I tried their HTC media controller in my Wings), so it doesn't look like it's exclusive to this model.
Yes. This was posted also by darksider:
if im listening to music with any application through the earphones, it makes-that the sound is at once also playing through the phone speaker, and i have to restart
hey i have the same problem....
if i am listening to music using the headphone and i become a call, then the ringtone comes through the speakers and also the music that i am listening to.
this is a big problem..
thanks
any solution??!?!
I suffered the same problem in the bus, and was very embarrassed because everybody looked at me and I didn't notice...
You have to report this problem to HTC (or reseller). More responses = better chance to find the solution in upgrade. But you HAVE TO DO IT!!!

[Q] All sound comes from earpiece instead of speaker

Sometimes my SGS play all the sound from earpiece.
Without earphone pluged in.
Without bluetooth devices.
But it works again after reboot.
Any one knows why?
SGS froyo 2.2 JPD Speed Mod K9A 300
how do u know it plays in earpiece if not plugged in?
meaning no sound at all?
same here
Sometimes my SGS also plays all sounds from the ear piece and not from the speakers. I never experienced this before :S
The sound is coming out the little hole that you plug the earpiece in to ???
jje
Happens after disconnecting from BT
Hi, similar thing happens to me too, but only after disconnecting from my car's stereo via BT. haven't tested on other BT stereo though.
yes. all audio seems to be rerouted from both external speakers (earpiece and rear speakers) to the audio jack or BT channel.
anybody else with this issue?
I once had this problem, but I just rebooted my phone and then it was ok.

No sound in speaker (in phonecalls) after using headset

After using a headset, the phone speaker for phonecalls won't work. I can use the loud speaker at the back of the phone, but not the ordinary speaker.
I got the speaker to work one time when taking the headset in and out of the phone (but not since, a week ago). Therefore I don't think the speaker is broken, but I'm not able to get it to work again.
Had the same problem on a Iphone (1.gen), but then I was able to get it to work again after pluging a headset in and out. Tried a lot of times with the SGS, but didn't help.
I tried to update the phone to JPX, didn't help
Just seams like the phone thinks the headset is plugged in even though it's not..
Any idea how to fix this?
When making calls there is button "Headset", try pushing that if it could help.
Thanks for answering. That button gives me the opertunity to connect a blutooth headset. Still no speaker sound..

[Q] Audio Speaker Problems?

Hey guys, over the past couple days, it seems my phone has lost some audio abilities, what's weird is that some audio STILL works, here we go:
- Notifications (Text and email) *WORK*
- Music Player/Youtube Videos/Phone Calls(inside the call, and ringing) *DO NOT WORK*
- Phone Calls in SPEAKER mode *WORK*
Here's what I've tried:
- Flashing to stock via Odin (Did a flash, didn't master clear.)
- Reflashing Serendipity 6.3 (What I was using before, should I maybe try a different ROM? It's an i897 ROM.)
- "Pressing" on the speaker, as I heard some have connection problems, but this is almost a year after owning the phone.
- Different audio apps (Stock music app, and PowerAMP)
Any ideas?
Bump. REALLY need help.. Trying a format/reflash now...
so the ear speaker isnt working but the Loud speaker does?
the "press on it" trick is for the loud speaker on the back..
sounds like a hardware problem. there is a REALLY EASY FIX. call samsung and get it replaced. flash to stock before you send it in.
I bought it from ebay, new in box. The chances of Samsung accepting my phone for a refurb is nonexistent, isn't it?
Being without a phone isn't an easy fix for me. =P
Bump. Solution found.
It was actually my headphone jack failing. I pushed in my headphones, played some music and noticed the button on the samsung headphones wasn't working, I took the jack out, blew into it, and now the headphones no longer work, but audio is coming through the speakers again.
Fixed my problem, although it wasn't the fix I wanted, since I use my phone for all my music, constantly.
I had the same problem. Turned out to be lint from my pocket in the headphone jack. If you have lint, get a needle, take pliers and bend a small hook in the sharp end. Pull out the lint that got jammed in with your headphones. I posted this fix a while ago in the SamsungCaptivateForum.com. I thought I was the only one who had the problem.
You know, that makes a lot of sense. I took a can of air spray this afternoon and let the headphone jack have it, and now it seems fixed. I think it might have been dirt from work. (Damn you, construction!)
Nice!
Thanks for the tips, I was having the same speaker issue and this certainly helped me out. My music player would cut in and out randomly if had it playing on the loud speaker.
How bout a pair of bluetooth stereo headphones instead of relying on headphone jack? I have motorola motorokr s305. I got em off ebay for $30 and they work pretty good.

[Q] Mic muted when audio jack in use

Anyone else noticed that the mic is muted whenever you plug something in the audio jack? This means if you are plugging your phone to the aux port in your car, you can't make/receive calls unless you unplug it. On the focus it worked fine. You can test it by starting a call, then plugging anything to the jack - mic is muted right away. Couldn't find any settings to override this either.
I don't have that issue. I plug my phone into the aux port all the time and it works fine.
Yep

I have the same issue. Was great to have a conversation while plugged into the car audio with the Focus. Now we're limited to the speakerphone, which just isn't loud enough to be useful. Maybe when the Diagnostics app gets mapped out better we'll find a setting...
Probably gonna buy a cheap headset, cut off the ear buds and splice the wires to a cable with a 3.5mm jack.
It would make sense for the internal mic to be shut off when a headset cable is plugged in, since the working assumption (I guess) would be that there is a mic on the headset taking over. It's most likely a 'mechanical' shutoff in the jack itself, with no 'checking' to actually see if there is a mic connected on the cable or not.
The issue is, the old focus, the Titan, and about all other cell phones don't do this. They allow the internal mic to work while using the 3.5mm jack.
