[Q] Adding To Favourites - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I've been unrooted - but its not the end of the world. I can still use remote desktop to connect to my PC , google music work fine as does flash and the android web browser.
However, the web browser (not silk) doesn't feature on the Carousel, and the only way I can launch ot is via ES File Manager.
Is there a way I can pin it to favourites, if is doesn't appear in the carousel??
Cheers

If it features in the kindle apps list you can long press and add to favorites from there.
I mean the apps tab from the carousel, not ES File Explorer

No, it's not on that list, which is why I have to use the file explorer. I don't want to try reinstalling in case it f doesn't work at all afterwards.

I have Zeam running. It is my preferred launcher. Had to search for the apk online because it's not in the Market on HC. Installed via ADB. Had to go to Preferences - General - and check sensor rotation to make it rotate when the NC was rotated.
Seems to work just fine.

For those that have loaded the Nook.app, have you actually been able to load and read a book? I have installed the Nook app on two different Honeycombed units. The units will synchronizes with my Barnes and Noble account and I can download my books. I can then select the table of contents sections of the books and even see my bookmarks in a book I am currently reading. However, when I then select a section to read (like Chaper 1 or a bookmark), all I get is the spinner on a blank page indicating the book is loading without any page ever appearing. I have left it try to load as long as 15 minutes on both Nooks without an actual page of the book ever appearing.

It definitely is buggy. I had to log out/log in again for my library to reappear. I've been able to d/l a book - but when I click on it I just get the spinner on a blank page. I can interrupt the spinner by clicking the Settings softkey and going to the table of contents. Clicking on a chapter gives me the same results you're seeing.
I'm going to say that, at least for the two of us, the Nook app is a no-go on HC right now.
Pocket Legends from their website does not install, says "your app was not installed"
It's not in the market, anyway to get all apps to show up in market yet?
Sweetness on my Nook!
Ran Honeycomb 2g image all day today, showing off at work. It ran well enough to use internet and install some apps on my breaks . So far got Market to work correctly by wiping market cache and framework data followed by a reboot.
Working Apps so far include:
Winamp
Zeam
Perfect Viewer
Jorte
Dolphin HD
So far the only program that hasn't worked fully is Beautiful Widgets, but I only tried one widget so far.
I am very impressed with the progress of this development process. Kudos to everyone involved. Amazing work and thank you!
Thanks for the list
Launchers are flaky, but usable
I have been trying to duplicate the problems w/Launcher Pro and ADW, but both seem to work OK after a reboot. After installation both hang when invoked, eventually presenting a 'force close/wait' dialog, but this no longer happens after the first reboot. Can someone w/problems try rebooting to see if it helps?

[Q] Adobe Reader as default PDF app?

Is there any way to set Adobe Reader as the default app for PDF files?
When opening a PDF, the device doesn't prompt me to choose between different apps and just opens it in the default Kindle app. I've looked around in the applications menu in hope of finding some general "reset defaults" button, but no luck.
The "clear defaults" button is greyed out for all apps on the device, so I guess it's not there either.
My device is rooted, so is there some way to tinker with some file to make it open PDF's in Adobe Reader?
Thank you.
Edit: I saw a mention of Default App Manager in another thread, so I grabbed it, set Adobe Reader as default and it works, but only for PDF files I open through apps (Dropbox and Google Drive for example). Is there any way to make it work for files that I open via the carousel or the "Docs" menu of the device?

Bell Canada Locked Chrome Book Marks - cant remove them

Hello Guys,
I have not really posted much on here, but i could not find, under the Experia Z1 device, about the Locked Book Marks that Bell Canada sets up in the devices on Chrome Browser. ( If this is not in the correct section, please do move it )
My Question: Is there any way to delete the "pre-installed" Book Marks that the provider installs.
Its just like the Bloatware that Bell installs on their Android devices, but in this case, the pre-install Google Chrome browser has "pre-installed" bookmarks that i would like to remove.
I never had these on my Google account till i got this new Phone yesterday. I can long press any bookmark folders and delete them, but this "Chrome bookmarks" folder i cannot remove. It also does not sync with my Google Chrome browser on my PC that is linked to my Google account. So i cannot manage that "folder" from my PC.
So, from what i can see, i cannot find a way to remove them.
I have added a screen shot showing the "folder" that i am speaking of if anyone wonders what im talking about.
The bottom folder, "Chrome bookmarks" is the bookmarks I cannot remove.
Anyone have options for this or ideas to remove the?
Wow... For mine I have a bunch of Sony bookmarks - also cannot be removed. Custom bookmarks that I added can be deleted (Long Press). Tried the same thing on the Sony ones and the option to delete is absent from the menu...
I was going to suggest deleting them from the Chrome Browser if your Desktop is synced up, (Other Bookmarks -> Mobile Bookmarks) - but I guess they don't show up there either.. The Sony ones don't...
Yes, any custom book marks i can modify and delete from my phone or my google account on chrome browser on the PC. but those "Bell" added favorites are not modified able at all or delete-able.
Its just annoying that every time i open the google browser app, all i see are those Fav's that are not mine!
If anyone could find a way, it would be helpful.
( I have tried apps to remove fav's, but does do not work at all. those Fav's stay there anyway )

Found a potential fix - I have now removed the Sony bookmarks by disabling the app listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284418
and Asus version here (same procedure)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856425
Then I cleared the cache from Chrome and rebooted the phone.

My Phone Explorer - useful application for Gear

I have been using a Windows application called MyPhoneExplorer for a several years with some of my Android (and Sony Ericsson) phones, and decided to check today to see if it would work with the Galaxy Gear. Yes it does!
Aside from being able to browse files on the Gear and show battery, CPU, storage and system information, one of the most useful features that works with the Gear (found in the EXTRAS menu) is the ability to control the Gear from the PC with live screen mirroring. So you can type on the Gear using the PC keyboard and mouse and access menus of say apps you may have side loaded on the Gear, that aren't accessible due to the Gear having no menu key. It also installs 2 useful apps on the Gear; a notepad and a task organiser. They work great too, handy for memos and lists, easily updated using the PC link up.
When you first connect, there will be a couple of error messages as the Explorer tries to sync with phone features not found on the Gear but everything else works great. And it's free to use.
Download http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php (or search for FJ Software MyPhoneExplorer) if link isn't allowed.
Don't forget to hit thanks if you found this helpful.

Unless you are using a custom ROM, the contacts are stored on the phone (and restored from Google on reset) MyPhoneExplorer doesn't sync contacts from the Gear but will sync with your Android phone.

Question How do I access the native Android Files app? [SOLVED!]

There has to be a way because I have seen this app when trying to send an attachment via e-mail or WhatsApp.
I need this in order to access the files that any app publishes to the native storage provider thing (https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/document-provider), for example like Adobe's Apps do on Android and iOS.
For example, with this:
There's none there. What you see is the Android File Picker. It looks like the default file manager of android because it is not skinned. But it is no way the same as the stock android file manager.
SOLVED:
(1) It does exist.
(2) Settings > Apps > Click the grayish icon to the right of "Your apps" (Filter and sort) > Toggle Show system apps to ON.
(3) Scroll down to F and you will see the default Android Files app is present and alive, just not directly accessible.
(4) How do you gain access to this?: I use the "Shortcut Maker" app from the Play Store. In this app, go to Activities, click on Files, and select "com.android.documentsui.files.FilesActivity" to make a shortcut to this app.
This is how you access the native storage access framework. This lets you access different Google Drive accounts directly and also access something like Adobe Suite app files too.

Could you elaborate how this works? I am trying to decide if it's worth the education to try to get this working on my device.
I don't need to access different Google Drive account or Adobe Suite app files, but maybe there is another benefit to using this hidden app?

Have you ever tried the Files App in an iOS device?
You know how certain apps let you access their files and folders directly through that system app?
It's sort of like how iCloud or Dropbox or OneDrive lets you access their files directly through the native framework of your desktop OS.
Ah, I've not used iOS devices.
So it sounds like this is sort of like a file manager, but it lets you get access to system files, hidden files, or other files that would normally be off limits?
Or is this sort of like an unlock code, where once you run the app, then various files become accessible that were previously locked down?
Maybe it comes down to what that means "access ... directly through the native framework" of the OS.
What does it mean to access directly through the native framework?
I personally use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore&hl=en_US&gl=US as my preferred file manager on my S21 Ultra. But I don't know what I could also do if I used the native framework instead of a dedicated file manager? Would that unlock access to files that x-plore simply cannot access?

Just wanted to express my sincere thanks for this solution! Got my Pixel 6 Pro this evening and was very disappointed to discover that the option of opening storage settings and clicking on files, which still works on my 4 XL, doesn't prompt the choice between the new and old files apps on the 6 Pro. Thanks so much for the clear explanation / guide on how to ditch the handcuffs and recapture access to the full file system.
I have been trying to replace the my files app in the print to PDF function but Samsung's My Files continues to persist. I have the Files app shortcut but can't find a way to change it to be the default file picker. Anyone been able to figure this out?

Life saver! Thank you so much. Worked like a charm.
For more advanced use cases you can use intents to call the system Files app (also called DocumentsUI).
The important bits of the intent are these:
(1) android.intent.action.VIEW
(2) content://com.android.externalstorage.documents/document/primary%3APictures%2FMessages
This bare bones intent will offer to open Files at sdcard/Pictures/Messages (assuming that folder exists). Modify to match the folder you want to open. This format is for local storage. Other SAF locations would use different content:// provider roots.

You can do this a couple of ways.
If you want to move files into an app directory you can make a second window from the Files app menu at the top right. Now split screen the two Files windows. Now you can drag and drop files from one to the other.
If you want to copy files into an app directory you need a mouse or a keyboard. Right-click a file and pick copy with a mouse, or Ctrl + c with a keyboard. Then navigate to your destination and right-click paste, or Ctrl + v with a keyboard to complete the copy. This also works for moving files but you can skip the accessories like I said above.
Anytime you want to copy or move a file out of the app directory you can use the normal copy/move options in the menu. The reason you can't copy or move into app directories using the normal menu is that menu launches the directory picker and that is restricted like all other apps are.
Thnx
