[Q] Will the I9305 get as much attention and dev as the 9300? - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

I'm currently thinking about buying a new S3, I'm not sure whether to buy the I9300 or the I9305.
While money is not my main consideration, I do think the extra 1GB of RAM would make a difference in the long run
(I don't have LTE in my country)
My main consern is that the I9305 won't establish as big development community as the I9300.
I mean, do you think that in a few months we will see a lot of development for the I9305?
Considering that any roms or mods made for the I9300 won't work with the I9305, this issue is big one for me.
Thanks

Well i think you've answered your own question mate .
If you're main thing is choice of roms and all the mods themes etc then go for i9300.
If youve not got lte in your country then yeah I would go for i9300.

I dont think the i9305 will ever have as much support as the i9300.
The S4 is only a few months away and most are probably just waiting for that.
There are some great ROMS for i9305 though and also Perseus Kernel which is awesome.
I have both the i9305 and the i9300 and to be honest the extra RAM makes a HUGE difference!

[Q] S3 Mini vs. S3

Hi there!
I'm looking for a new phone to buy around februari 2013. I'm torn between the S3 and the S3 Mini. I listed up my Pro's and Con's beneath. Will there be as much xda software development for the S3 Mini as for the S3? I mean roms cyanogenmod, MIUI,.. All that cool stuff? I'm a huge android fan and love to root my android phones and customize them with custom roms
GALAXY S III MINI
Pro: Super comfortable size
Con: No LED-notification light, battery life, memory, no auto-brightness + how about android development?
GALAXY S III
Pro: everything is awesome + huge android development
Con: size
PS: I bought a Galaxy Note 7 months ago and it was way to big for me to handle, even when I used it for months.. It wasn't all that comfortable, so that's why i'm seriously considering a MINI over an S3... But I love the S3 in all other ways more (more features etc.).
Can you help me with my questions?
thanks!

about s3 mini hope with new update software 4.1.2 the notification led solve. if about software .
S III Mini
Honestly, the S III Mini is still a bit overpriced (at least in my country), tho I got it a few days ago and I really like it. Was a HTC Desire user, and was looking for a same size phone. This one has all the Desire lacked in terms of hardware, but the development is not that shiny because of the chipset. If you can find, S II would probably be a good choice.
I've been using the S3 Mini for about a month, and I'm quite satisfied with it! The thing is, the 4.1.2 Update was extremely disappointing, and there are very few devs out there supporting it! I've been thinking of taking up ROM porting, just because of that :silly: Anyway, I don't expect much from my effort...
Besides that, you have summarized pretty much everything considering these two devices. I would highly recommend that you buy the normal S3 if you want to install custom ROMs, and generally mess around with it.
i think s 3 mini will be great 4-6 month later , since we have not much hh owner+developer , and its diff version on each region..
i just hope there will be offcial CM.10.1 for this phone.. hope not too long
well ofc ill go s 3 if i want to choose which one the best... but i just cant afford the price lol
For me, I went out on a mission to buy a new phone, as my wildfire buzz' battery died and repair wanted £15 for a new batt'. Considering the buzz wouldn't even sell for that amount, new phone it is.
So I was going to get the S3 knowing about cm (but hating the size), and i saw the S3 mini. Looked up the hardware specs and bought it straight away.
Shame about the lack of updates and cm though
I wish I knew more about porting too.

I have an s3 mini and my father has an s3, imagine the old man trying to use it, he is about to sell it and buy an iphone. Anyway, the no led thing was the thing that bugged me the most, i solved it with bln mod from the xda forum, that makes the lights of the buttons to blink on new messages, but of course i had to pay.
On my overall experience (software, hardware, apps, size, etc) i will always choose the s3 over the s3 mini, the size is not that much of a problem considering that it almost doubles the mini in specs, mods and developing
I hope it helps you, my advice, don't buy an s3 mini

[Q] opinions about Samsung galaxy s advance

Hi everybody. I've already checked the various threads but the answers don't satisfied me. I want the Samsung Galaxy s Advance and I've the chance to buy it for 250 euros. The device is perfect for what I have to do (the only drawback is the RAM, because I wanted it to be 1 gb). Anyway, my question is: is it good to buy it now? I fear that it will not be upgraded anymore. I've another question: should I wait for new devices coming at the MWC? Any release date? My budget is limited to 250 euros.
Thanks in... advance
Sorry for my bad English
Look Bro.... SGSA may not be that popular or might have some bugs but what it does have is a damn good processor and gpu
...... Given the price range..... Also we have a small but good developer team which have released kernel and roms which are brilliant...... Also SGSA HAS RECEIVED JB update and it runs like butter....
This is all I can say the rest is up to you as you are the one who is gonna buy it not us.... But if you buy this device you won't regret that you invested in this piece
IF I HELPED PRESS THANKS!!

thanks. I think I'll get the Advance. So I hope xda developers will continue rocking on this device!
I don't mean to discourage you or anything but if you are looking for a phone with atleast 1 GB RAM then you do have an option to get S3 Mini instead... its 250 EUR now and it has the "same" hardware as the Galaxy S Advance - only thing that differs is that this device has 1 GB of RAM.. and S Advance has 768 MB instead...
PS: The 4.1.2 update for S Advance may be the "last" official update from Samsung... but on other side the S3 Mini may even get 5.0 update..
But I'm SATISFIED with my S Advance... if you do the "proper" Tweaks and Modifications then this phone might get too fast for you to handle
Warning: If you are planning to buy a Galaxy S Advance then make sure its i9070 and NOT i9070p... The "P" version is the NFC version - here on XDA only one developer has this and that too is bricked... so you might not get any dev support if you own a i9070p!!

I Think we might get future updates....as our device is equivalent to S3 mini......and it is a recent release also!!
if S3 Mini can be updated(i am asuming it will go to 4.2 or larger) i dont see a reason why our model wont be?
But that is just MY perspective!
Don't buy it if you expect development.
It's a solid performer but nothing more. I came here from a ****ty, low-end htc device that had more development done in a month than SGSA since it had it's own subforum on xda.
So for the time being you can choose from:
1. JB update X or JB update Y - both provided by our hefty russian branch :>
2. two custom kernels which do have some bugs and glitches (but hey, nothing's perfect right?)
Device was released nearly a year ago. Do the math.
The only reason i would recommend you to avoid samsung smartphones is problem with keeping dialer and sms applications locked in RAM. So far i have not seen the device (from ancient devices like spica or i5500 to s3) that manage this properly without custom rom (@official samsung software dev's wtf?). So i would probably go for LG/Sony

Neither s3 mini or s advance will get 5.0 that much is assured. Only note 2 and s3 have the hardware to run such a hefty(I'm assuming after seeing the RAM eaten by JB) so it doesn't really matter whether s3 mini or the advance is depends on personal preference only!

But I'm just guessing.. the rest depends on Google and Samsung
discussion about future OS's is almost irrelevant for this topic. you cannot expect from any mid range phone to support many future os's so this won't help him with his dilemma. IMO only relevant thing could be that samsung usually don't support AT ALL models older than approx. 1 year, in favor of selling newer, more expensive models. which is not the case with some other manufacturers

It doesn't really matter what updates will samsung release, that I've learned while owning an original Galaxy S. The last fw officially relased to it was GB 2.3.6. Right now it rocks Jelly Bean 4.2 stable. (yes, of course CyanogenMod ^^)
It's quiet an old device, but still, the dev support is amazing! And do you know why it's possible? Firstly, sales. More than 10 million sold. More popular device means more devs, usually. Secondly, it's hardware is identical to Google's Nexus S which received an official Jelly Bean and that means source codes released in timely manner to work with!
As for the S Advance, the only problem is popularity. It was an awful mistake to release it with gingerbread instead of already long available ICS. This repels users, who are interested in tinkering with their phone. This means only those few people (and to whom I thank their efforts) are here and capable to do anything with development for our device. Honestly, the list of roms and kernels are short.
On the other hand the chipset is quiet popular and I'm sure other handsets with the same chipset will help somewhat to keep this device up to date for as long as possible.
Cheers!
Hi everybody!
I am a fully satisfied Galaxy Wonder I8150 user, however - since I found an offer for the Galaxy S Advance I9070 for about 200€ - I am thinking about changing my phone.
What would you suggest?
Are you happy with the I9070?
I am a bit worried that you do not have many ROMs available - while I8150 has plenty of them and good developers, just to name one, arco! - and it seems to me that the I8150 is not very widespread...
Opinions and discussions are more than welcome, tx.
The number 1 advantage in s advance is good value for money and good specs for that price. If specs are your only concern try s3mini . It may be costlier but has more ram. As regards s advance, now after Jb update development has picked up and we do have at 3 least good custom ROMs and other mods. CM10 official may come soon and there will be more ROMs based on it.
But if you are buying a phone now look for something newer as Samsung mostly won't release next android update for advance

@ Sadvance: I surely agree with the fact that I9070 seems to be good value for money.
I would go for S3 mini (although I prefer the design of I9070 actually!) but paying 100€ more for having 1GB Ram instead of 768MB is not justifiable imho.
Are there other significant differences between S3 mini and I9070 (I cannot find any other)?
@R_a_z_v_a_n: what do you mean?
Should I look for the P version since it also has NFC reader?
Or should I look for the normal (i.e. NOT P version) because it seems to be more widespread?
Tx a lot.

CM10 is being worked on but it takes time without cource for NovaThor U8500 soc. S3 mini is a pretty new model compared to the Wonder and Arco is still in alpha stage with it for W. Just imagine how many hours he must have put in on that project. Just give the devs some time, and i'm sure we'll se an alpha when most things work. :good:

First of all it's not an s3, it's an s3 mini. Can't be compared to s3 when it comes to hardware.
i8190 was released in november 2012 I think and that wasn't a worldwide release. Of course things gets slowed down. Security was also tightned on this one so we didn't get a working custom recovery untill end of januari.
if you really need CM for your device you should pick an older one with official support from CM team.
The normal target date for official CM support is about a year. This means that there's usually a working-ish port ready about six months after the device launched, and this phone launched just five months ago. Give Maclaw time to work on it.
Sorry if this question has been already asked.. I'm not quite sure: Some state that source codes are released, others say they're not. Being on a SGS2 without proper source code, I'd like to know if SGS3 mini documentation is fully available (= developer-friendly).
Thanks in advance,

Try to ask in the CM10 dev thread, there Oliver or other devs working on it will answer your question

i9105 user base and dev support stable investment?

I was thinking it might be worth getting an i9305 because of the extra RAM it holds, with the addition of 4g the I9305 should last longer or be more future proof. But I realize the user base is significantly smaller than the I9100. As a cyanogenmod enthusiast I'm concerned the s3 LTE will have less dev support and thus be less future proof than the more popular 3g variant.
Is this a valid concern? Does the I9305 get less support because of its smaller user base? Perhaps not now but in the future when its a legacy device.
The I9300 only has about 100-200mb of free ram even with nothing but aosp rom. Of course its still smooth and stable but Id imagine having 2gb would ensure Android 5.0 and cm11 upgrades to not be a problem.
Is there much difference between the I9305 and i9300 ROMs? Can the I9300 ROMs work on or easily be modified to support I9305?
What do you think, please put my mind at ease. The price difference isn't much so I'd go for the I9305 as long as it gets CyanogenMod support as long as the I9300
Cheers

You'll find most of the answer to your question here but I'll try to go a bit more accordingly to your questions here.
Q: Is this a valid concern? Does the I9305 get less support because of its smaller user base? Perhaps not now but in the future when its a legacy device.
A: If you are really into modding and just can't live without playing around with your phone and have to try something new everyday then yes it is a valid concern. i9300 has way more support and development than there is on i9300.
Q: The I9300 only has about 100-200mb of free ram even with nothing but aosp rom. Of course its still smooth and stable but Id imagine having 2gb would ensure Android 5.0 and cm11 upgrades to not be a problem.
A: Well, some of the dev thinks differently, they say 1GB ram is enough to handle 5.0 & AOSP rom and it will be stable and smooth and why wouldn't it be? there are helluva lot more devs for i9300 than the i9305 to make sure they run perfectly. To be honest without the devs the extra 1GB ram is useless.
Q: Is there much difference between the I9305 and i9300 ROMs? Can the I9300 ROMs work on or easily be modified to support I9305?
A: I don't know much about the difference but I can tell you this, it aint easy to port a i9300 rom to i9305, so don't expect to get all the rom they have on i9300, on our i9305.
Q: What do you think, please put my mind at ease. The price difference isn't much so I'd go for the I9305 as long as it gets CyanogenMod support as long as the I9300
A: Here I'll just talk about my personal preference which might put you in confusion rather than putting your mind at ease. I'm not saying this because I own a i9305 but personally I feel the extra 1GB ram is a big plus and I believe it'd help us to be more future proof and there are still a lot of ROM and MODs for i9305 to play around. A lot of the MODS from i9300 works for i9305 especially the biggest mods like JKAY mods works on i9305. I'm not gonna stretch it long but for a few bucks more I'd go for i9305, ofcourse if you are a mod freak then i9300 is your toy but I'm more than happy with my i9305, got several mod installed, changing rom every once in a while and with 1GB extra ram multi-tasking is a pleasure. The rest it upto you.
I hope I was able to clarify some of your concerns if not all.
Thank You
Hit Thanks If I Helped

I'm in exactly the same situation. Is CM on the I9300 that stable to be called perfect? Don't they have the same issue with the camera and sources code?
I wonder if the RAM usage is the same on stock rom vs CM, if is significantly more on stock maybe the low usage on CM can make it up for the 1GB missing?
I ended up buying the I9305, no noticeable difference in performance when running cyanogenmod (cyanogenmod / aosp uses less ram than touchwiz, to answer your question, sandro).
The camera bug is the same on both the 9300 and 9305, also the last few nightly updates of cyanogenmod 10.1 have 'no changes' in the changelogs.. seems like my old S2 had more frequent updates and support.
The S4 is only $300 more so no worries can just sell and upgrade if the development community becomes stale
do you think the i9305 will ever see 4.2 or key lime whatever its version number will be?

Upgraded from an S3 to the XZ, only because I managed to drop the S3 and cracked its front glass.
Otherwise, I'd still be happy to stay with the S3.
User experience wise, it's not much different with the XZ, the S3 was fast and quick as well. The increased ppi, you can tell if you look for it..but in reality, it doesn't affect your overall experience very much at all.
The Xperia Z is supposed to be getting stock Android and will be sold in the Google Play Store. That I presume will lead to better development of this phone. :good:

anyone pay for that will be a fool, i'm sure sony will charge ridiculous price for it...the Dev can copy the system and post it on here.
That's pretty much what I meant. Our phone will benefit from this...if it happens.

if you looking for developement the XZ is not the place to go...there is like 5 stock rom, 1 kernel, and 5-6 AOSP, AOKP CM10.1 rom...

As long as there is stable AOSP I am a happy chappy, and this is something that just isn't available for the Galaxy S3, neither I9300 nor I9305, and it literally never will be either. Mark my words. S4? Sure. S3? No. Don't buy an S3 if you are interested in ROM development... unless you are talking about ROM cooking I guess, but that isn't really "development".
Also there are like 2 usable custom kernels for I9300/I9305, neither of which run on AOSP.
While we're on the subject, you'll notice -if you look- that the actual developers that own an Exynos-based S3 all seriously hate it and have vowed not to buy any more pure-Samsung devices because of it. Speak to codeworkx on IRC about it if you're interested in hearing more about why the S3 sucks. Suffice to say that I am certainly not purchasing any more Samsung products without first seeing some sources for the device.

Agree with you. Owner of a exynos s3 and the major problem is they lie to costumers telling that s3 will be upgraded and are delaying this not to damage s4 sales. S3 is a unfinished phone. Samsung never get this beast to fully working. Lags overall do bad memory management. Even s2 sometimes works better. And if you have the chanxe buy instead a n4.

I'd love the N4 and I completely understand why the S3 sucks due to sources not being released properly, I've already spoke to codeworx and his answer was "every Sony runs AOSP better"
So I'm going for it!! Good bye S3 and hello XZ
Thanks for your input guys!

S3 international version may suck but U.S version is hard to beat...its what reviewer classify as an Iphone De-throner... and I was using AOKP on my S3...I still missed my S3. My main developer that I like are Faux and Task 650, any other Developer I am grateful for their work but I wont choose them over the two i have. Simply put they are the best at what they do and they are currently rocking Samsung and Nexus device.
THe only reason I am not using AOKP or CM10.1 on this device because A2DP sounds sucks (little bass or detail in sound, it sound like there is too much mid or treble)...I had to switch back to stock rom, not everything on CM10.1 here is fixed, but I imagine it would be soon, hopefully. again I would not advise anyone to buy this phone again, I gave it a try and I dint like it, never again. I remember using the Sony K850i and that was awesome quality stuff from Sony, I missed that phone too.

Well, we were specifically discussing the international version so I don't really see how a comparison to the US version (which is a completely different device) is useful.
Also K850i was a SonyEricsson device! (very important because Ericsson <3)

Krait dual-core, big difference. And yes, it is roughly on par with Exynos S3.
