No More Nexus 4. - Nexus 4 General

I tried to like this phone, but I have come to the realization that I just don't. No bumper, charging mat or screen protector has helped me enjoy it anymore. Getting this device to work correctly on at&t is a nightmare, I'm having connection issues to this day. No apn, imei or change of plan has fixed it. The phone has light bleed, which is frustrating to look at and buzzing which is annoying to hear. Rma is not my thing it takes to long and I've heard to many horror stories.
Stock android is nice though I feel the experience of say the note 2 is better. I'd rather have a skinned version of android and then when I am looking for a vanilla look and feel I can ROM aokp or cm 10 which seems to be the better version of stock android anyway with added utility and customizations.
Think my run with at&t and my nexus is over. Time for a new beginning with Verizon LTE which is available 100% in my area where at&t is not and I think I'm going with a droid DNA.

Good choice man! this device is not for everyone :good:
As for me AT&T works fine in my area, never had any problems. Had a few friends not getting signal earlier with their sprint iphones and I let them use mine to make a call :silly:

Hey man, it's your choice! Pure capitalistic decision here. You are not satisfied with the device, which you have every right to feel that way. It doesn't fit your needs and you like the Note 2. You don't need some AOSP zealots approval to move on. I hate AT&T personally. They treat you like crap, and though they are the No.2 carrier, with GSM, I wouldn't go back to them for all the tea in China. If I was a high roller, I might consider Verizon as they hands down have the best coverage in the USA. Their 3g is slower than my T-Mobile... and even sometimes their LTE, but good luck getting ANY 3g coverage in upstate NY (aunt lives there) on T-Mobile outside Rochester proper. If you would be served better with a Verizon Note 2, go there brother and be happy with your purchase! I personally don't want to go back to touchwiz (been AOSP too long), but the phone is awesome! Has a beautiful screen, expandable storage, great processor, 2nd best Android battery life (Razr HD Maxx being No.1), S-Pen, multi-window multitasking, etc.
Don't think you have to have a Nexus or the acceptance of the Nexus crowd. Vote with your bucks and your feet. Wish you well with the Note 2.

Are you going to sell the Nexus?
I personally have had zero issues on AT&T via Straight Talk and love this device. I would highly recommend sticking with a GSM provider though, if you have service in your area, T-Mobile perhaps? As GSM unlocked devices gives one much more freedom to move carriers, plus, I suffered hell with Verizon, they are by far one of the worst companies I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with; never again.
Either way, good luck.

It's called T mobile?
I honestly never see the purpose of these threads. The forum isn't your personal blog. And I don't think any body necessarily has any care what you're saying (as mentioned previously by the person who said cool story bro). If you don't like the phone that's fine, just be on your way. Not being mean or anything but the general forum isn't ones blog

Would you trade your ns4g for an e3d?

So I have the choice of trading my n's and 30$ for an evo 3d and and I wanted some input from you guys. I love my nexus. Coupled with cyanogenmod this is the best android experience I've had thus far. My only gripes with it are the glossy fingerprint magnet battery cover, the crappy speaker, and ok camera. But everything else is magnificent. On the other side, the evo has a dual core CPU, qhd display(albeit its super LCD and with htcs crappy build quality I'm sure there will be backlight bleed), and a 4.3 inch display. The real reason I would do this is because if there's one thing HTC is good at, its wireless radios. I can't obtain a landline web connection so tethering is all I got. My download speeds are fine but my ping fluctautes too much. Makes playing battlefield 3 on my PC a chore 70% of the time . Anywho, convince me to keep my nexus, because for some reason I have this feeling that I'm going to regret doing this lol. But as of right now I think I'm gonna go for it.
pwnd by my ns4geee yo
i would wait to find someone willing to trade you their epic touch. that's the only phone i'd even consider giving this baby away for.
check craigslist periodically, you'll see something come up.
Yes. Dual core.

I actually just traded my e3d for a nexus s. Not enough development for the e3d, drove me insane.
Wouldn't take the evo either. Google phones have very active developers as well as Google support which translates into faster updates and a longer lifespan with updates.
The dev community is what makes or brakes android phones IMHO, and nexus phones have always gotten one of the best.
Having actually gone from the EVO4G ->EVO3d (sprint bought back phone after 1yr, just payed $40 difference) and currently owning a NS4G afterwards, I would stay with the NS4G.
Although in theory the Dual core and Bigger screen may be viewed as an upgrade, with the correct development/kernel on the NS4G, I have had more impressive experience.
Considering you getting a EVO3d now, it probably has hboot 1.50+ on it which will cause you to run into a myriad of problems when trying to root/flashrom/kernel.
In comparison to the NS4G that is, the newer HTC's are locked and require you to use their own htc utility + other apk's to flash inside the system your rom/kernel (given that you have the lastest hboot like I did)
After have owning the Evo3d for a few months and trading my mother for her "older" NS4G, I would never go back. The development on this phone is impressive; hard to find another thread with updates so frequent.
That being said go with what you enjoy in your hand/feel/look/whatyouwannadowithit haha.
Sorry for the Rant.
Ps after ICS on my NS4G i would never go back to my evo. Not until they figure out some better rooting/flashing methods for their newer devices.
Btw the 3d camera is pretty gimmicky. IMHO. Unless you hold it with alot of precision, 3d never looks just right.
I decided against it lol thanks peeps. You've helped me in not making a horrible decision

it was obvious who was gonna win as im a google fan, but it was fun to play with both and been able to compare them

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they've got a major OS interface overhaul in the works at the very least, especially given the departure of Scott Forstall who was a huge proponent of the skeuomorphic elements while the rest of senior management was less than thrilled by it.
Its time has come, and I've heard a surprising number of non-technical, average users say they as switching to Android just because they are "bored" with the iPhone and iOS, despite it probably being the best choice for them. Interesting when customers are jumping ship just because they want to see something new, not even because they need it.
Things are going to get interesting over the next 2 to 3 years, that's for sure.
iphone 5
iPhone 5. Nexus 4 does not have 4G LTE. The iPhone is also made of a strong, durable aluminum so it could last longer than the Nexus 4.

Then why are you in this forum?
Your argument is one-sided and ignores that the Nexus has benefits over the iPhone too. They are both great devices that excel in their own regard.
Ok, I have both of these right now and have been going back and forth between the two.
Here are my thoughts.
First of all I have everything Apple, iPads, Macbook, iMac's and AppleTV's.
The iPhone 5 is fast and "just works" without doing anything to it. iMessage is a great feature and I can text from any of the above listed devices, except the AppleTV of course, this is a big plus for me.
The iPhone 5 has a better camera and video recorder, I have done some test shots in the backyard and the pics and vids are crisper and cleaner on the iPhone 5.
The iP5 has a nice home button, I've found in the past few days using the N4, that when I pick it up its hard to tell which end is which end and to find the Power/Unlock key I usually have to twist it around to get it right.
The N4 screen glass is almsot too smooth, its kinds too slippery to text on, but I prefer the keyboard to the IP5's.
The N4 has the best to date software out there, I love JB 4.2 blows anything else out there out of the water.
The battery is better on the iP5, mainly because its never doing anything, there is no Google Now, no widgets nada running in the background. It is 1:40PM and I've had the N4 off the charger since 8am, and just with normal use the battery is already at 66%, which the iP5 is still in the 90's. But since I normally charge everynight, as long as I can get thru the day I'm happy.
Call quality is good on both, the speaker is louder and clearer on the iP5.
The N4 actually does pretty good without the LTE of the iP5, webpages load pretty good and even though I now how fast the LTE is on the Ip5 it wasn't too bad using the N4.
I'm really torn here, the N4 has Jb and 4.2 at the top of the list going for it, the hardware is good but not great.
The iP5 is a slightly better all around but is just, yawn too stale these days.
I've played with a new HTC One X + but I can't stand Sense and the UI, but that phone IMO is slightly better then the N4 and it also has JB, but only version 4.1.
Just my 2 cents.....

You're absolutely right. IOS is gonna do a major UI overhaul because they don't have a choice but to do so. Its been looking pretty much the same since it came out 5 years ago. Android keeps evolving and getting better, IOS is also great but too boring. Like you said the next few years are gonna be super exciting and we , the consumers , are gonna love it! Look out for WP mobile too.
As far as the nexus 4 vs iphone 5, they are both great phones but like the OP said in his video, the nexus suits me better. But gotta give credit where credit is due, iphone 5 is insanely fast especially when it comes to web browsing.

There is no "yes and no" as to whether something has LTE. The phone has LTE. Whether or not your carrier uses the bands the phone supports is another story. But the phone still has LTE regardless of whether your carrier uses those bands.

Indeed. The phone has a "LTE Chip" so its pretty much "a" LTE phone. It just isn't working properly on US carriers. Its there but not working right now. I'm glad tho, that it has LTE and I won't have to invest in a LTE phone when T-Mobile does push LTE!

Wrong. IPhone is encased in glass, just like the nexus. It has am aluminum rim, but that is actually more likely to damage the phone if dropped as the rim of the nexus 4 is rubber, significantly more shock absorbent. The nexus does indeed have an lte radio inside, its just not enabled out of the box because only one gsm carrier uses it. Besides, the bottleneck on browsing and download speed is generally the storage medium and processing speed, and the nexus 4 trumps the iPhone in processing power, if not storage write speed as well, providing a faster browsing experience. LTE and hspa+ have rarely shown any real world speed differences, the main difference is in latency, which largely depends on processor speed as well. It ends up just being a power hog with mostly unnoticeable performance increases. In general I think the nexus 4 trumps the iPhone.
In a year I have to switch to all apple products to go into sound engineering, but I may stick with android phones because the iPhone just isn't there. I'm going to get a Mac and an iPad but I won't buy an iPhone until they bring it up to spec with the latest android phones.

The iPhone 4 and 4s was glass, but the iPhone 5 has a soft-touch aluminum backing.
I phone 5 also has LTE.

either the galaxy nexus or nexus 4. dont get a gn for sprint, a gsm gn on att would be better(would be best on tmobile). sprint data speeds are terrible, 3g and lte.
I guess first thing we need to know is what carrier. People will say DNA, note2, gs3, nexus4. In the end any phone will compliment the n7. I have a thunderbolt and does just fine for me. I tether to my n7 and sit the phone aside while I use my n7.
One thing to keep in mind about the gnex is battery life is very poor. People has posted it lasting 4 to 5 hrs tops. In the end any phone you get will be fine and no phone will have an edge over another. Only thing a n7 needs from a phone is tethering.

Not true at all. The galaxy nexus battery life is very good. I easily make it through the day on a single charge. Obviously if you play games and watch videos non stop then it will go like any other phone, but like I said. The battery life for the gnex is very good.
Also I would say to the OP that a nexus handset would compliment the nexus 7 very well. Either the galaxy nexus or nexus 4 would be a good choice. Depends on preference really.

Nexus 4 or a GNex but like people have said the N4 is sold out so I would get a Gnex. DROID Dna or One X+ are also great phones. I wouldn't go with sprint I hear nothing but bad things about them. My father has sprint and half the time I get a bad connection with him and he gets dropped calls constantly. Data isn't very good either. I'm with at&t and have no problem with them but if I hadn't been with at&t for 8 years I would go with T mobile.

There's too many variables to suggest you a new phone. It's you that matters.
Do you love taking photos with a phone? Would you take advantage of a replaceable battery? Do you like to play a lot of games? Do you like a huge screen or would you prefer better one handed use? Do you like a screen with realistic colours or one with in her face colour saturation? Can you use 4G where you live? Do you use your phone as an mp3 player all the time?...
The list goes on. What is a great phone for someone else may not necessarily be a great phone for you.

I'm considering getting one instead of an N4. I just love amoled screens, and the extra processing power of an n4 is not important to me since all my real gaming is done on my N7 now. My phone, like someone else mentioned in another thread, plays WiFi tether ***** more than anything now.
To be honest I'm still perfectly happy with my galaxy i9000. Since I've already bought an N7 though I'd go for the galaxy nexus for the HD amoled screen mainly. The only thing making me wonder was a guy a few posts ago saying the battery life is poor on the gnex, although at least its got a replaceable battery. But like you say the development on it is similar to the huge development still going on for the original galaxy s which is what I want. Although the n4 will have huge development too.

If you want unlimited and you're looking at going with a contract there's always T-Mobiles unlimited option, their unlimited value plan is 70 bucks for legit unlimited. And I would recommend a nexus phone also. If you can't get ahold of a nexus 4 maybe try to find a used gsm g'nex.

The nexus 7 is the most valuable electronic device for the money in my opinion. Therefore the phone to accent it should be equally priced well per pound. Nexus 4 then skyrocket s2 or t mobile s2 before galaxy nexus because of SD slot.

My GNex got great battery life much better stock than my N4 now I gain much more battery on my N4 with custom kernels than I did on my GNex but battery was never a huge issue for me with it. I'd rather not go AMOLED anymore but if I did it would be a GNex again over a GS3 that's why I kept my GNex and didn't sell it. But if u can hold out a lil longer the N4 is to me far superior. I agree with the post above about now that I have an N7 too I use it more for my browsing and entertainment activities except while at work where my N4 is still my best friend. Better battery life now for my N4 as I use it far less cause of the N7. If u like AMOLED go with the GNex:thumbup:

The nexus 7 is the most valuable electronic device for the money in my opinion. Therefore the phone to accent it should be equally priced well per pound. Nexus 4 then skyrocket s2 or t mobile s2 before galaxy nexus because of SD slot.

I also own a skyrocket and if battery life is an issue I would shy away from the skyrocket. IMHO

Nexus 4 Backlash

I'm really not understanding why so many people dislike the Nexus 4. Is it due to the terrible launch? And why keep comparing it to the Galaxy S3? Vanilla Android and Touchwiz both have their ups and downs. Lack of LTE really shouldnt be an issue unless you are on Verizon. For $350 (including tax of course ) you get a phone with a quadcore processor,Adreno 320 GPU, fully unlocked, and timely updates. Not to mention the amount of money you wiuld save getting a prepaid service no contract.
Sorry if I made a few mistakes. This is my first post in this forum and just received my Nexus 4. Any advice would be helpful for future threads.

I have a note 2, gs3, gs2, galaxy nexus, droid RAZR, iPhone 5, and a nexus 4. Guess which one is my favorite? The nexus 4!!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
No not here. I see it in numerous forums and threads. People bash the nexus 4 before they bash the S3. Its being compared to the S4 and that phone hasn't even came out yet!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I don't know, people like to nitpick. My problem with the Nexus 4 is the same as the Galaxy Nexus I previously owned, its never 100% perfect, even after an RMA, there is still a bit of black light bleeding, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, my wireless charging orb stopped working, had to RMA that, and so on, the Nexus line to me has always had some flaws in terms of hardware reliability.
That being said, the Nexus 4 is among the most beautiful phones, up there with the high end Xperia phones, and with amazing hardware, so asides from the hardware imperfections that one might encounter if unlucky, its a great phone.
I cannot think of a single phone other than the new Xperia (if aosp) that is coming out that I would trade my Nexus 4 for.

you just might be right sir. This is actually my first nexus device. I honestly was really close in getting the S3 until I saw this technological beauty being demoed at a local T-Mobile store. I swear I heard the phone calling my name lol. I immediately forgot all about the S3 and purchased the N4 full price.
Where is this so called backlash at?

Jealousy is a powerful emotion.

Well maybe not a backlash, but numerous threads and forums bash the nexus 4 as if Google completely messed up the device. Lack of LTE, lack of storage, glass back (guess they forgot about the "rave" reviews about iPhone 4 hardware), phone isn't thin enough, etc. CNET gave the phone a 3.5 out of 5 while S3 got a 4 out of 5. They gave the Galaxy Nexus a 5 out of 5 and the N4 is a complete upgrade! So a removable battery on Galaxy Nexus makes it perfect?

Don't pay attention to ***** ratings.. Nothing but a popularity contest.. Read the conclusions and see if the `cons' are anything you deem a problem. They focused on lack of LTE which is a legit gripe no matter how you spin it and how well HSPA+ works.. It is a technology that is sort expected now a days. But.. Unless it personally affects you.. Then it doesn't matter..
They also focused on calling it "uninspiring" "not expanding the Nexus brand".. That's when I stop taking them seriously.. When reviewers start getting all Martha Stewart on you.. It's time to stop reading.
It is just not flawless: back glass, which can crack in any day, noise from earpiece, non-vibrant screen - these spoil impression from the phone. It is my first nexus devise (I had xperia Ion before it) and I expected much more from it. I still haven't decided which one to sell - Nexus or Ion. Ion is flawless except that hardware quite old.
And that's what makes the difference between the nexus 4 and everything else. It will constantly get updates before any other phone. I can totally understand the glass back being fragile.

I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy with this being my first nexus device. But honestly where else are you going to find an unlocked top tier phone with high end specs for $300. Put in perspective, a galaxy note 2 costs $299 with a two year contract. That's not even the full price of actual phone which is over $600. Over $600 for a phone that may or may not get Key Lime Pie. The nexus is guaranteed to get it and faster than anybody else.

Have the thermal throttling issues been resolved since launch?

For me it doesn't matter how much it costs - I could buy iphone 5, but I don't like iOS. Price is just a good bonus. Having top hardware specs is good, but will not you feel disappointed if your back glass is cracked? And this state of waiting and checking if it is cracked or not... I hate being in situation like this. Maybe in some time I will stop thinking of this. Will not you be disappointed if you had another device with worse specs, but with so much better display?
That's a good question...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm not saying cost should be a factor, but rather value. Look at what u get for such a low cost. I can understand the glass back being an issue. But I'd rather have the back shatter then the display itself. Luckily I have a case. Either way I would be disappointed. But which would really tick u off, shattering a phone $700 or shattering a phone $300?

I'm not sure as of yet. From what I've read it hasnt been that much of an issue unless you're doing extreme multitasking. So far Ive played Need for Speed Most Wanted while listening to music and it hasnt shut down yet. It does heat up though but not bad enough to shut the entire phone down.

I spent 475$ for 16 GB version - that is its price in the UK. And i spent about 100$ for different accessories for it (skins, cases, etc). Maybe if lived in US and bought it for 300 I would have a different opinion

Curious

Anyone else really happy they got the nexus 4 instead of S4 or ONE ?
Pure android aside'.
I'm saying this cause all the issues & what not that the S4 & ONE seem to be having.
Just noticing a lot of issues with both!
Neither have lived up to all the hype about them!
I wanted the one . but didn't want to wait so i got the N4 ...
Note that I have held the one in my hands , it's a nice phone, its aluminum . but just seems cheap. Not nearly as cool or nice as what 'I' expected.

I've always wanted a nexus because of it being pure Google Android. I'm happy I finally got one. I love the phone.
It's kind of early to say the one and s4 have "a lot" of issues. The s4 from at&t has an unlockable bootloader, that's a bummer but not a shocker. It was said to be locked before it was released. I haven't heard of issues with the one. But that's just me.
Every phone has its "issues". It really boils down to if you personally like the hardware, looks, and software

I really strongly dislike the buttons layout and skins on both so I'm glad to have my nexus 4 until something better than either comes out

I do like my Nexus 4 but in my case its all about updates and support. Here in Brazil its common to NEVER receive updates. When the updates are supposed to be released the brand already have another new phone that they want you to buy instead of just update your phone.
Most of the people here does not even know what a Nexus is. When people asks me about my phone is funny because when I say "Nexus 4" I can see the "wtf is that" face.

Lol nice.. I littery just realized last night I'm not happy with any other phone.. I played with a bunch of androids , iPhones, windows phones yesterday .
They had cool features . some have a cool design. But for me that's as far as it went. I was bored within 5min of each.
I know I won't have the whole 'experience' within 5min . but that's all it took for me.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the One's design. Will probably get it if the next Nexus isn't made of metal, and root to run stock Android. I can't stand Sense
Super happy and excited for the new updates + pa cool stuff coming soon!!!

I'm happy with my choice, I bought the N4 just some weeks ago. I simply love stock-Android, the looks, the feel about it. The phone is a tad to big for me though but even bigger phones I simply wouldn't buy.

Happy with the Nexus. I've learned that I don't need gimmicky features which add no real value.
Nexus is fast, reliable and free of bloatware,
It's at the cutting edge of software thanks to updates direct from Google and it's the basis for custom ROM development.
Those were my main reasons for choosing it.
Maybe for average people the S4 or One would be a better fit, they are more practical in some ways such as having more storage and battery life. Samsung's and HTC's software does add value for some people but not for me, I just see gimmicks and stuff made to look pretty.
Samsung's smart pause and smart stay are cool innovations though.
The S4 and One are almost twice the price of a Nexus 4, but are they twice as good? Absolutely not. The Nexus 4 has more than enough power for most people, and you won't have to worry about whether the manufacturer will abandon it to focus on other devices.
The storage capacity is a bit of a bummer, but if you're clever, you'll find a way around it. I built a little server to house my music collection and use Subsonic to stream it. Other people I've seen use online music services or Internet radio. People are always coming up with new solutions in the Nexus community, and that's what I love about it - we've got a lot of bright minds here!
Not that the other devices don't have their fair share of good developers, but Nexus devices are meant to foster experimentation.
