[Q] Few questions - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking about buying this phone for 297 euros. S II costs about 320 euros here and S Advance about 245 euros. Also Xperia P is quite cheap (220 I think) but I read that it has quite a few software problems, and judging by my Neo V, I don't want to buy Sony again, I'd prefer a Samsung since most friends are happy with them.
Now some questions for anyone willing to enlighten me.
1) Is this price comparable to prices in other countries? Should I go for S II or Advance?
2) Is the pentile matrix visible when browsing?
3) Has anyone played Minecraft on this phone? How does it run?
4) Has anyone encountered problems with the WiFi like those encountered by a few S III users? (disconnections from certain routers)
5) I read that Move 2 SD doesn't work unless you root (which I intend to) and use the DirectoryBinder app. Is that a S III mini perk or does it happen in all Jelly Bean devices?
6) Can someone tell me what partitions does he/she see and their sizes (total/free)? Whatever it shows in settings->storage (or however that submenu is called)
7) If you haven't installed lots of apps, how much free RAM do you see after lets say 24 hours of use? Has anyone noticed memory leaks that accumulate over days without rebooting?
Please answer any of those questions if you can, it will help me a lot deciding properly whether I'll buy this phone or not. Thanks a lot!

1. Go for S3 Mini. Newer phone, more updates. In my country i cant get S II. S Advance only on different carrier.
2. Only if you keep phone too close to your face ( less than 12cm )
3.Yep. Fancy graphics, no lagg at a. Extreme smooth
4. I tried 3 different routers (different manufacturer). No issues. Connects and stay connected. Signal strong.
5. Its problem with Android. It recognises built in sd card as sd card and external sd as external storage so apps cant be moved to external SD. Usually CM ROMs have patches that make moving possible
6. [Will add later]
7. Around 500 MB (internet, nfs mw, video) running in the background

[Q] SDXC Compatibility?

Hi everyone!
do anyone of you know if the Optimus Speed Supports SDXC? (or any Bigger memory cards than 32 Gigs?) Officially, LG said, i believe, it Supports only 32Gigs, however, i`ve read somewhere, that the only Difference between SDHC and SDXC is that SDXC uses the "exFAT" Filesystem! Hardware-wise, even a "old" SD 1.0 reader should be able to read both, SDHC and SDXC its just the right drivers u need... so do anyone of you know, if Android supports the exFAT Filesystem? if android Supports it, i believe so, Android should be able to read/write the Big Cards?
sorry for my horrible english by the way ...

I would also like to know if anyone could try out a 64 GB sdxc card in a o2x.
I have the phone on order, and this would be a serious plus, especially since the phone otherwise will only accept up to 40 gb (8gb + 32gb sdhc card ;-o )

your wrong lol
the Phone does accept 40 Gigs, However, u can unly use like 35 Gigs or sumthing for your own Data, wich is... hmmm not that much! (5,5GB internal SD+32GB SDHC <-- 30 GB useable!)
EDIT: what would i do with so much space? well, currently the 35 gigs that the Phone offers WOULD BE ENOUGH BY FAR for me! but if im going to buy this Phone, i think im gonna own it for like 3 Years or Something! ...and after some time i might need more Space! (my Music Collection is growing all the time!) and a little bit of... hm how you call it? "Future Proofness"... maybe? anyway, that wouldnt be bad...
EDIT Nr.2: @ altemirx no, i don't lol ... as i said previously, i want... how i should call it? "Future Proofness"

35 Gigs of usable memory is ok, but i could easily fill that with pics, music and a few videos... Times are a changing... ;-o
Also, if I get the o2x, i doubt it will last me more that 1 1/2 - 2 years max... Unlike my good old nokia 9500 communicator... I miss the full querty on it... RIP!

These cards are confirmed working in several Android's now:
http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/sandisk-64gb-micro-sdxc-cards-confirmed.html
Am guessing that all that is needed for using an SDXC card, is just a driver. As simple as that.
I remember like 5-6 years ago i used to have a pocked pc and it was when SDHC standards arrived, and by just installing a 2kb file or smthn, they were completely usable on any old Device. So am guessing the same thing applies here...
I could be wrong of course : )

This is true. There is technically no difference between between the SDHC and SDXC-cards, just the size. You need a file-system which supports >32GB-cards. (I have a transformer, which has built-in support for NTFS, and will happily accept SDXC-cards larger than 32GB provided it's formatted with NTFS.)
I haven't tested if any ROM for the O2X can mount SD-cards with anything else than FAT, but it's easy enough to test I guess. Just format a(ny) card with ext2/3 and insert it. If it's recognized it should be possible to use cards >32GB.
Did neither of you guys see my post? These are working in Android devices, no special drivers needed. I don't think anyone has tried in a 2x specifically, but I would be surprised if they didn't work.

[Q] Migrating from my X10i

I dropped my phone from three stories high, and my x10i shattered to a million pieces.
Not really, but it was messy.
So I bought a Galaxy Note to replace it. I've had about 2 years of experience with my x10i, but I've never actually delved into the whole rooting and custom ROM scene much. I still don't think I'll be rooting my Note. I've got a good idea of how Sony Ericsson phones, software and customer service work. So now that I've migrated over to Samsung, I am in need of some assistance.
First of, is there anything I should know that's not blindingly obvious from the start? Like, the differences between the x10i and the Note, the Samsung-specific apps like the Social Hub and all that jazz? I know it's pretty hard to answer such vague questions, so I'll leave something to help with assisting me.
1. Battery life. The X10i has pretty crap battery life. I used to get about 6 hours during the first few months, and it deteriorated to less than an hour by the 18th month of usage. How good is the Note's battery life? I'm unable to test it as I'm still charging it. Speaking of Charging,
2. The magical 8-hour rule. Do I really need to charge my phone for 8 hours when I first get it?
3. Can I have the Social Hub with my Facebook and Twitter accounts stored and still have the Facebook and Twitter app?
4. My Note's got 16GB of built-in storage. I also have an 8GB MicroSD card from my x10i (which somehow survived the fall). That makes it roughly 24GB of content I can store. Does that 16GB of built-in storage also count towards stuff i put into my phone, like music, pictures, movies etc? Or is it only for apps? When I connect the phone to my computer, how does it know where I want to transfer the content to (microSD or directly to my phone)?
5. What file formats does it accept? I know that playing .mkv files on my X10i just killed it. Can its 1.4GHz dual-core processor handle .mkv video?
Any other information regarding the differences between these two phones is also appreciated.
Thank you.
1) I generally get the full day with no issues.
that is, about ~22hrs with 4-6hrs screen on time. (most of that spent web browsing) but depending on what you use your phone for, that could vary wildly. Update to the latest firmware for better battery life, as mine has improved over the past few months.
2) Battery life calibration seems to take a few charges. I've heard fully draining and charging can speed this up.
3) Yes. The social hub seems to be the one pushing events to my calendar though.
4) Part of the 16GB is already taken up with OS. when you mount the note on a computer, it'll default to the internal, and you can access the sd card from /external_sd which should be mounted inside.
5) I'm told yes, it can play .mkv. I'm not sure whether the default video viewer can though...
EDIT: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote/note/spec.html?type=find doesn't list mkv as a playable type, so I think that it does require a market video player.
You may want to register for samsungdive at some point. I've never used it, but it's free.

2. Of course YES.
3. Yes. Social hub App is Present in Stock Firmware
4. You can save any data files in Phone memory as well in Memory card (It ll show "Phone Memory" and "SD Card" in My computer)
5. Almost all formats. Of course it supports .MKV files
Thank you both kindly for all the information. I'll go register for a samsung dive account now.
I'll add one more question.
I'm going to do a factory reset on my phone (Carrier included too much bloatware that I'll never use). If I pick "Erase Internal Storage", will that also include the Samsung apps that come with it? Because I want to keep them but take away the bloatware.

To be more specific bloatwares are placed in /system/apps in the root directory. You can remove it only if you root your device. If you need to root follow dr.ketan's method.I found it very easy

changing video card on a laptop

alright guys my friend has a toshiba satellite L755 (this might not be the entire model number im going to look into it again) and its spec are alright but the video card and possible the cpu are ****. he wants to play alot of the newest games but isent able to run most of them, but im sure a simple getting a video card and installing it should be easy but i dont know if the video card is attached to the cpu and that would be very expensive . i wouldnt know how to tell if it would be that problem can anyone help us?
No, yes, no ...
Desktop and Laptop thread? You can't have missed it?
I have never heard of changing a video card on laptop. It's like built in feature and look that you won't find anything on the market that fits GPU for laptops. You could of course buy a graphics card and connect it via usb but from what I remember It was very expensive and was only given support to some intel cpu's
Better luck asking here.

I've done it several times. It all depends on the laptop and wether or not you can even access the Videocard. Most high-end Asus laptops can easily be customized.
Best go to a computershop if you've no experience with it yourself, it isn't always easy.

largest SD card HD+ can take

Hi
What is the largest size SD card the HD+ can take as of today? I have seen posts talking about 64GB. Just to make sure that is it as far as capacity.
Trying to decide if i should buy the 16GB or 32GB model.
The 32GB model seems to have quite a premium on it on the used market, so it seems the 16GB mpdel and a SD card would be better value.
Next thing is the battery issue. What are the chances that a used HD+ battery will have much, if any, life left in it?
Read an interesting thread here today (been reading about HD+ all day) about a guy who used 2 x Sony batteries. So the batteries can be replaced and those sony batteries will be around for a fair while (new phone model they come out of) so seems the nook can go on and on as far battery replacement goes.
Why a Nook HD+ ? Its the only tablet i can find with no camera other than an IPAD 1. I've given up on the IPAD 1 - much much too much messing around trying to get decent modern apps on it.
My useage is mainly movies, music and ebooks. I think the HD+ is the right choice.
Thanks for any heads up/opinions
*edit*......
Guess another way i could have said this is, will the HD+ take a 200GB card? If not what is the max size storage i can attach either by SD card, or USB host method ?
You are better off paying the premium for the 32GB model. Since the device uses an emulated internal SD, the extra space internally is critical. After the system is set up you are left with only an 8GB internal SD on the 16GB model. And most apps will only use the internal SD. Many apps will not even recognize the external SD. And I only have heard of the 64GB card working, don't know about larger.
And the factory battery comes charged at 50% and I would expect a new device to have a good working battery. Used devices could have a bad battery.

Ok thanks for that info - that's really critical to know. Well i already bought the 16GB model and its being sent to the freight consolidator, so too late on that one.
But the next few I buy will be the 32GB model. I intend to buy 3 or 4 and have them all sent in one go. That way i should be able to end up with 1 or 2 that work OK.
I will stick with the 64GB cards - class 4 is what i think i saw mentioned here, so will look for those.
Thanks for the heads up.
My intended usage is movie viewing, listening to music and reading books. That's pretty much it. I dont expect to use it for browsing or anything else really.
Will Mx player, a music player app and an e-reader work OK in the 8GB left over internally? Media can go on the 64GB Micro SD card, and if i can get OTG working, i can use an SSD drive and/or a USB memory stick.
The only reason i want the Nook HD+ is for media consumption.
If you are not going to be using the SD to run a rom, you do not need to restrict yourself to class 4. I doubt you could find a 64 in class 4 anyway.
You have not said whether you are going to run stock or a custom rom.
You can use one of my utilities to swap the internal and external SDs. But, for the swap to work the SD must be formatted fat32. Most 64GB cards are not. See my CWM thread. Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 item 4.
And yes the apps will work with the 8GB and it will hold a lot of books and some music. Movies will gooble it up fast.

You are very correct - cant find a 64GB card in Class 4. Struggling to find a 32GB card in Class 4.
BUT - if i dont plan to run from SD then you say i dont need to restrict to class 4 - so would this one be OK ?

I want to run a custom ROM. I have downloaded lots of files for CM11 - My plan would be to use CM11 as a base ROM to fall back too if a 12.1 ROM proves to be unstable for me. Ultimate goal would be to run Lollipop if i can. I only want to watch movies, listen to music and read books - no need of browsing etc, email and the like as i wont have any wi-fi anyway.
This is waaaaay to far in advance right now but just curious...... is it possible to get a ROM that has wi-fi removed or not functional?
Thanks for your input. Doing lots and lots of reading here, feel like i am starting to make sense of it all,
I have bought the new 16GB model and now also have 2 x 32GB used HD+'s as well.
I need, the USB connector, OTG cable ??, a power bank so i could try to use an SSD drive, micro SDXC cards.
Cant think of anything else right now other then maybe a USB charger from RAVPOWER or ANKA or similar as the power supply that comes with the HD+ wont fit our wall sockets here.
Other then that, i think thats it.
Cheers and beers to you all.

Yes that SD works fine.
CM11 has been know to brick some HD+ devices. I recommend CM10.1.3. It is fast, safe and stable on the HD series. You don't need anything any more advanced than that for what you want to use it for.
I don't know anything about OTG.

Doing extensive deep dive into this...... reading so much its all becoming a blur and will have to re-read it all
From the extensive research i have done it seems every CM ROM has issues. Ver 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 have had users report issues of various types. CM 11 seems to have issues from time to time as does CM12.
Given this, is there any real difference between using 10.3 and 11.x.x ? Fro what i read KitKat 4.4.4 makes better use of resources as an OS and that this helps the HD+ ???
I am just trying to figure out if i should run with 10.3 or an 11 or 12 ROM?
Another question, not that this matters right now but interested to know....... the screen res. Its 1080P. Does it make a difference if i encode video files at 720P for the screen of the HD+ that has native 1080P? I would hate to spend a huge amount of time encoding down to 720P only to find it looks terrible because the native res is 1080P.
I can make my video files so much smaller encoding to 720P rather then 1080P. I would think on a 9" screen it would be little if any visible difference between 1080P and 720P encoded from a Blue Ray ?

I would think on a 9" screen it would be little if any visible difference between 1080P and 720P encoded from a Blue Ray ?

video on HD+ looks good at all res.
And I told you CM11 is dangerous because it can brick certain models with the vulnerable chips. Stick with CM10.1.3.

OK got it. Best i stop reading now ;}
So 720P it is for me then.
Which are the certain models with vulnerable chips? Always nice to know if the tab you have is vulnerable.

Here is the link to CM Wiki page on the Samsung EMMC Bug:

FWIW CM11 later releases incorporated fixes that avoid triggering this fatal bug on affected devices.

Best SD Card for Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100

Hi Guys, This is my first post so hope I am in the right place. I have the Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100, and on a recent holiday I had used the video function quite a bit, but when I got home and went to transfer the files to my PC, I found most of the videos were corrupt. I was using an unbranded 64gbSD card, Is that where I went wrong, hence my question what's the best SD card for this camera. Also does anyone know if there is a remote control available for it. Thanks in advance .

That's what I have as well, I was fortunate enough to get it through a promotion from Verizon for valentine's day of all things lol. It is fast. Transfering gigs in no time. Nice. ?
