No, you cannot. Rooting shouldn't be THAT difficult though if you have experience on the sort of thing.
But, no, without root, you cannot get another launcher working.

That is not correct. ADW launcher ex works without rooting. The only limitation is that tapping the home key brings up the original kindle ui. But a simple tap of the adw icon in the carousel brings adw back up.

I've rooted my Kindle Fire 10.2.4 perfectly. The guides online work like a charm, here:

I w i ll try that...i dobt know why i couldnt find that. Thanks so much

I used ADW Launcher EX version 1.3.3.56
I tried all of the popular launchers, none of them worked. This version of ADW worked for me.
To install it, simply obtain the .apk file and place it on your KFHD. Then use a file explorer, like ES File Explorer to locate the file and execute it. That will install it. Then from the Amazon UI, go to "Apps" and tap the ADW icon.
It should work fine. As I mentioned earlier, the only limitation is that tapping the "home" softkey brings up the default Amazon UI. But the ADW icon appears in the carousel so tapping on that icon brings the launcher back.
It's a very nice and safe way to use an alternative launcher.

It worked perfectly!!! now I am using the apex launcher. With the google play store, a matrix live background and no more lock screen ads. Thanks so much!!!
I do have a few questions though...
First with apex launcher how do i view all my books? i know i can search them but is there an easier way?
also is there any way to change what comes up as the lock screen?

Hm! Thanks for the correction. I had no idea that was true. Someone should find out why that happens and get something set up so people can easily do that for their kindle in case they aren't sure about rooting their device. Even when we get new OSs and such, I think people may want to keep the kindle OS and still like a familiar look of an android OS. Or maybe we can request ADW find out so it still works with future updates and whatnot? NO other launcher works this way that you've tried? Only ADW?

For books, that's up to you. I never looked into, nor used, ebooks of any sort, kind, or make.I used moon reader because I could just browse to where I had my kindle books (co-worker kindly gave me a bunch, so I had a nice little collection) and it works from there. I'd say it's an alright reader, but you will most likely have to get a reader you like that can open any kind of file. I'm just not to knowledgeable for that, but moonreader does work. For any Kindle books you can get the kindle app from the PlayStore and use your books from there.
For the second part, here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051270
To sum it up, I'll paste what the guide says:
To change the lockscreen we need a few apk from the android market.
A. No Lock
B. Rom toolbox
C. Your favorite lookscreen ( I use Picture Password a copy of Windos 8 lockscreen)
Simply install Rom Toolbox, No lock, and lockscreen form market.
Open Rom toolbox and select App Manager find No Lock from the list and long press it. A menu will pop up, select "Convert to system app". Reboot device ( To skip this step you can also download No Lock apk from internet and place it on system/app)
Open No lock and hit enable, now you have no stock lockscreen, feel free to install your favorite lockscreen
*Note from myself:
In following the guide, go locker was being a butt to me. I then remembered ages ago that I bought widgetlocker, and that it would have exactly what I wanted. Now, right now, WidgetLocker IS a system app on my kindle. It works. I am not sure if this is needed, as it is not listed in the guide, but if you try the lockscreen and it doesn't work, you may need to make it a system app, I just wish I could remember WHY I did it.
Good luck!

ahh ok what you need to do is instead of ..\..\root do
Code:
cd C:\root
assuming you saved it to a file directly on your c drive and called it root
do the same when it asks you to do ..\..\qemuroot exept put cd C:\qemuroot....these are basic commands... You may consider reading up on windows and xda commands to help you along the way if you run into issues

Getting back to Zeam launcher

Hey everyone, hope to get some help here. I put 1.2 ont he wifes Nook the other day, then last night decided to go ahead and root it. However, using Home Switcher, I accidentally set Home a default instead of Zeam.
I can't seem to find a simple process to clear that default setting from the Nook Home launcher. Can anyone help?

Run Home Switcher again.
Thanks, but I can't seem to do that from the stock home screen, it isn't in the apps list.
If you can get back into the market, install another launcher, or uninstall then reinstall zeam. That should reset the first home button press to select launcher.
If he is on 1.2 non bn apps.do not show up in their launcher.
If you happen to have.softkeys running just get into.the setting.of softkeys and change home buttom.option

yeah, that was what I was thinking. I tried to download softkeys last night from here, but 1.2 won't recognize the file type. Guess I will try again later.
If you can get into the Applications Settings screen, you can clear defaults on the home launcher and that should do it.
Same problem...
I'm having the same problem. I mistakenly set my N button to Home and now it is as if my device is no longer rooted. With the 1.2 root, the Apps button only shows B&N apps. I hoping someone has a solution, so I don't have to start all over...

If you rooted, then you should have Nook Color tools in your apps. Go to Nook Color Tools>Settings>Manage Applications and find Zeam. Then clear the defaults and back out of the application. You should be able to make a choice between "Home" and "Zeam" as your launcher when you press the Nook button.

With the MN root for 1.2, the B&N Apps button/screen only show the B&N apps, tho... I'm hoping once 1.2 rooting is further along we'll see all of our Apps, but not at this point. I'm still hoping there is some way to do this, so I don't have to start over.
I ran into this same thing. To fix it, going through your web browser and install an APK for something launcher related. This will make android bring up the "Default Launcher" prompt the next time you press the 'N' button.
Try something like this, get back into Zeam, and uninstall it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827288
Edit: If you can browse to the Zeam, Soft Keys or Home Switcher APKs, I suppose you could reinstall and that would also bring up the prompt.

I wasn't sure if I was going to get any ideas, so decided to go ahead and start over, so I'm back to stock now and updating to 1.2, then will be MN again. I did take a quick look at the link you provided, tho, and must not have read through it closely enough, because it didn't jump out at me what I would have done. It was a post about phones, but I assume that was okay.
When you say to go through my Web browser and install an APK. How would I have done that? Using the browser on the NC, can you install applications from market.android.com? I didn't think you could...
I'm back MN rooted now...get to reinstall all my apps and fun stuff! Boo! I won't do THAT again!
On a semi unrelated note, has anyone else noticed significant lag when panning through the app drawer using zeam? Using phiremod cm7 I switched to adw (stock) launcher and it seems so much smoother even though I'm not clocking it as fast (1.1 to 800 MHz) which I found extremely odd

For some reason ZEAM's app drawer does lag on all versions of the BN software thats rooted. It has been seen by many users here. If you try launcher pro much better app drawer and totally smooth even more than the stock app drawer that comes with android operating system. Although I beleive you cannot do specific things using launcher pro that you can do with zeam!

How did you get your N button to set as physical home? Are you using Soft-keys? In 1.2 so far I have not managed to engage the N button at all to go HOME. Ended up locking the Soft-key HOME icon in the Taskbar to get out of BN screen.
Easy fix, from home launcher: search, then just search for Zeam or what ever app you have installed. With search history on it could even be considered a crude app tray.
do a search, apps should come up in the search list and you can access the launcher from there.
Haven't experienced Zeam lag...

Chameleon launcher on Fire HD?

Let me preface this by saying I am a paying customer of the chameleon home screen and when I get home this evening I will be contacting the developer to see if I can obtain an apk to try and install on the fire HD.
I was mainly curious if someone else has tried this home screen / launcher replacement on the fire. The app itself I love, and it's getting better with additional widgets being added and also an api for other developers.
If I am able to get an apk to try and install, would I go about doing what most others have done with other launchers?
Set proper permissions for the apk
Move apk into system/app and reboot?
If it's more complicated than that, I'm going to give Nova a try using one of the other threads since I'm fairly novice with this stuff. I am however rooted.
Thanks!

I tried it, and it is easy to get working, just like you said, move, change permissions, and I did not need to reboot. After it was in system/app and proper permissions were set, I pressed the home button and I was prompted to pick which launcher to use.
I thought Chamelon looked good in it's adverts, but I was unable to get the widgets to look the way I wanted. I also had a problem with the weather widget. No location was found (even using wifi) and when I selected by zipcode it found my city but would not get the weather information.
I am sure it's user error, but I removed it and gave up for something else.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't had a chance to try Chameleon yet, but still want to do so, hopefully this weekend. I did try Nova launcher and it just force closes any time I try to select it, but I am getting the choice between stock and Nova. Chameleon certainly has it's work ahead for it, but it's promising imo as long as more developers take to it to make some great widgets.
ADW Launcher EX (paid version) works fine.
GO launcher EX works fine also in the system/apps folder.

[Q] Has anyone gotten the Amazon Kindle app to work with a non-stock Launcher?

I have a rooted Kindle Fire HD with ADW Launcher EX running alongside the default Launcher.
When I am using ADW I cannot open the Kindle app; I was wondering if anyone else experiences this or what I can try to fix this.
I would use just ADW as my default launcher but it would make my Kindle Fire HD less of a Kindle without my books.
I noticed this as well when using Go Launcher. I also am unable to find Magazines which I use a lot, so I have to switch back to the normal launcher.
I second this question, anyone get the Kindle App working?

Nope, no luck either. This is one of the reasons why I'm keeping my KFHD unrooted but use ADW Launcher EX... I like the flexibility.
I downloaded the kindle app from the market and last night got all my books in there, BUT today when I tried to open it it said it was not installed. I don't know what happened or how to fix it yet. I am trying, will keep you posted! This is bugging me, I want to get to my books without launching in kindle. I am using go launcher hd.
Update: I can not get that app to work, I can not even un install it.
But, I went to the market and installed "kindle shortcut" there are 2 kindle widgets, make sure you pick the right one, it is the second one. I am using go launcher hd. Go to add widgets. Click it, click the kindle shortcut widget. It will load all your books, you will see the name of the book at the top, check the box that says use art work, it will use the book cover. This will add the book on your home screen page. You can then open the book, with go launcher it asked me which launcher IT wanted to use the first time only, after that it directly opens your book, and to the exact place you were reading. The only bummer is you have to do it for each book, add widget, click book name, pick next book, check use art work, etc. Hope this helps, at least I can get to my books without launching kindle now! I'm thinking maybe make a folder to put them in?
The name of the app in the market is Kindle widget, on my kindle it says kindle shortcut.
Ok, I could not stand taking up 3 dock pages with my books and you can not make a folder for widgets, only apps. I did find an app called widget folder, it is specifically for widgets. I downloaded it, added each book shortcut, still one at a time. Now all my books are under the one app, not scattered over 3 dock pages. In order to change the name press and hold, you can not re name within the app. So far no problems. Although you can not get to the cloud, it still puts all your books in one place so you do not have to use kindle launcher just to get to books. Hope it helps until the devs get it all sorted out.

Download and sideload install.
It's not on the amazon app store so you'll need to find another source..
Run launcher
I run ADW EX and just have a shortcut to Amazon Launcher (the KFHD desktop) in the dock. I hit that and am back to the "stock" OS. Hit the home button and I'm back in ADW. I am rooted however.

Send it to your kindle email. It will show up on your Amazon account and be pushed to all your devices that have the kindle app. They will even format it for you if you put the correct command line in the subject, however I can't think of it off the top of my head.

The Kindle app treats "books" differently from documents. I am pretty sure the Documents folder should load in the Kindle App as long as they are the right format.
Books are in: MOBI, AZW, and PRC
Documents can be: TXT or PDF
The best format is to convert ebooks to Mobi or AZW.
I do not know exactly where the Kindle app is looking, but I would actually recommend and application: Calibre (just Google "Calibre ebook"). It doesn't officially support Amazon Kindle Fire HD, but it does support Kindle Fires right now. There are other apps you can use, but I'm assuming you are loading non-Amazon ebooks.

Use Calibre to do the upload. It will convert the file and place it in the correct folder in the right format. The document folder is the default for kindle books. The latest version recognizes my Fire HD and uploads flawlessly.

I was able to get that first one you mentioned to work, and and in my opinion it's the one you want. I am For it to work you need to change the directory to "/mnt/sdcard/Books/Sidecars". The only problem is that you need to have a "coverssmall" directory within that to have cover art for your books that contains the files from "/mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/small" on in it. Normally for that I'd do something like "ln -s /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/small /mnt/sdcard/Books/Sidecars/coverssmall" but the fat32 sdcard won't allow siblings so I just copied the directory over and renamed it. It's not a perfect solution since I'll have to do it every single time I get a new book to have cover art, but surely one of the gurus here can think of a better way to do it.
I installed busybox and sManager (script manager) and wrote a small script that copies the files from one directory to the other. Unfortunately the widget does not detect the new files by itself so i have to recreate it,hmm strange!

Can't read anymore Amazon books on KFHD. Help, please!
My KFHD is rooted, with perfectly working ADW launcher and Google Play with various Google apps (but no way to install Maps, for some reason: Google play says it's incompatible with my device, while I keep reading here that it is done by several people ).
I had the problem described above, being unable to get to my Kindle books from ADW. The described Kindle widgets (or shortcuts) refuse to install on my tablet. I tried to install the Kindle reader apk I am using on my Galaxy II phone, and it apparently installed, accepted my Amazon login, even displayed sone - not all - of my books, but when I try to open a book, it just exits back to the ADW home screen. I also tried disinstalling it via Titanium Backup and reinstalling, but still it wont open any book.
And switching to the uriginal Amazon environment, I saw that the original reader disappeared with all my books!
So, I got an Amazon tablet unable to read Amazon books! Somebody knows how to get back the original reader? Or has any other useful suggestion? Thanks everybody!

[Q] Use a different launcher, but keep default kindle app?

Hello everyone. I am successfully rooted with GAPPS and everything installed. I really *really* want to use NOVA Launcher (which I have installed fine and is functioning correctly) however I cannot open the Kindle app. I know in order to use it you must update it to the latest version, which works until you reboot your kindle. I however don't want to do this. I want to keep using the 'Books' tab from the default launcher. I like everything it gives me so I really want to just stick with it. That is the only thing keeping me from making NOVA my default launcher. Is there a way I can find it and put it in nova?
Thanks! Also, as my first post, hello. I am Brandon.
Not that I know of, you have two options. Go to the kindle launcher when you want to read a book or mark the books you are currently reading as favorites. You can easily launch directly into a book from the favorites menu from nova launcher.

I moved the kindle app to (data apps) after reboot works fine.
The “Kindle app" from the play store? I think he wants to use the preinstalled stock kindle tab?

Not sure I understand why you cannot use the default launcher to open the books tab. In the app drawer open the home app. This should take you into the original amazon launcher.

[Q] Change the "Home" key KFHD.

Good afternoon to you all here at XDA,
Until recent I have had no problems with any on my devices when it comes to exploiting and unlocking them but today I started to play around with my girlfriends KFHD and have now run into a few snags.
For now I would like to focus on the Home key function.
I have just installed ADW Launcher EX and after setting it all up, discovered that the home key just takes me back to the stock Kindle Home screen. Is there anyway in which I can set my home key to be default to ADW rather than stock so it will load my ADW's default screen?
Side note: I know you can use Go Launcher EX which I use with my phone but I don't fancy messing around, adding this app to the system folders and the device has a locked bootloader and not mine.
Any help is much appreciated,
Thanks for your time,
Madrox.
I believe the device needs to be rooted. So you can convert the launchers apk file to a system app.
Once it's a system app, you can set it as the default launcher and the home button will work like you want it to.

Thanks for that,
The device is rooted and everything is unlocked and ready to go apart from the Bootloader.
I have seen the /system/app approach but do not want to try it as I cant find out if it is safe on 7.2.2. I've only seen this done on earlier versions and as said device is not mine and I have no Factory Cable, I won't be trying that just yet.
ADW launche r and 7.2.2

I just set ADW Launcher as systam App with 7.2.2. I had to : as user app it wasn't working at all, All seems to be all right with my tablet. Only, I can' t use widgets and wallpapers - don't know why - while with 7.1.2 they worked perfectly.
Hope to be of some reassurance for you
Tested with GO Launcher EX 3.13 after reading other posts. After messing around half the day with other things, I never actually noticed this post was similar to another about Launchers so this is now a closed matter.
Like nova launcher
