What cool things to do with Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 General

As the title says, what do you do or can be done?
I haven't really found any cool things to do with the tablet. Other than watching movies on a bigger screen than a phone, I haven't really used it for anything different that I can't do on my phone (albiet a bit slower)

If you have a Linux machine, install ConnectBot on your Nexus 7 and SSH into your home computer.
Another thing that seems to impress folks is when I use BubbleUPnP to connect to my home PC over the Internet to watch movies.
Speaking of movies and SSH, login to a Linux machine with mplayer installed and watch a movie in ASCII (works best with cartoons):
Code:
$ mplayer -vo caca Aladdin.mp4

Well it already has adb. Just open a terminal and type adb! You also can get fastboot on it (search xda for fastbootarm). And you would need a usb otg cable. Not sure if it works too well (my cable hasn't arrived yet), but you could also install Ubuntu and do it from there.

Video Out via HTC MediaLinkHD

You should be able to stream video if you have an HTC MediaLinkHD.
This will only work with videos/music stored locally on the tablet. It will not clone your display, so no surfing the web or games on the tv. Just streaming movies and music to a tv.
I was toying with it last night on my transformer prime. I tried bubble upnp, imediashare, etc... All of them would stream music no issues, but the video would always fail.
Then I found this free app, and every video I tested worked. In most cases, this worked better then the pairing between my evoLTE and the medialink.
If you search the play store for medialink , you should find an app called Wi-Fi Media by Cavium (wont show up when searching for Wi-Fi Media). Install it, choose your movie, and set the renderer to the medialink.
profit???
link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5iaWFub3IuYW1zY2F2aXVtIl0.
Of course I don't have the Nexus7 yet. But if anyone does, and has the medialink and wants to try it I don't see why it would be any different then my prime running AOKP.
This would be an expensive option if you don't own a newer HTC device and already own a medialink. But seems the option is there at least.
The no video output was more of a deal breaker to me then the storage, and that seems to be a non-issue now. If I could just find one in stock.
we can't have an app for make a mirror screen such as htc one x use 3 fingers to mirror the screen is not possible with a mod in next rom custom ?
I've been using the the media link and the Wi-Fi media app with my nexus 7 and must say it works well. We take it with us now just in case we need to keep the kids quiet with a film. The video quality at 720p source is very good and it hasn't stuttered once.

I have one but mirroring kind of sucked and it was all that was available outside of the stock player and YouTube which actually sent the content via MediaLink (not just mirroring) on my HTC One X. I'll give it a shot with my Nexus 7 tonight. I was underwhelmed with the device using my HTC One X but I hope that it's better with the Nexus 7. Fingers crossed!

Can anyone provide a categoric answer on whether the HTC Media Link HD will play movies downloaded onto the Nexus 7 from the Play store that have DRM protection?
I think answering this single question will stop a lot of people hunting around and ultimately creating similar threads on the Nexus to TV issue.
Thanks.

How is this possible? At 1280x800 we have 1,024,000 pixels, at 32bit color depth that gives 32mbit per full screen image, so standard 60hz video would require just shy of 2gb/s... Wifi can't do anywhere close to 2 gigabit per second, 802.11n theoretical max is only 600 megabit and that's using 4 spatial streams which no consumer hardware supports... for most home users their max is going to be about 300 megabit/second using 40mhz channels and 2 spatial streams with a guard interval of 400ns (and even that is hard to achieve). At 300mb/s you'll get a frame rate of less than 10hz without compression.
So how the hell are they doing it?

What's the best office app for the Nexus 7?

So I'm curious what others have found to be the best office type app out there that works on the N7 here?
I bought Docs 2 Go back when it first came out and I was lucky enough to catch the Amazon FAOTD when they gave away pretty much every big office app; Docs2Go, QuickOffice Pro, QuickOffice Pro HD for Honeycomb (not sure this would even load), and OfficeSuite Professional 6.
They all seem to have good and bad, but I'm wondering if others out there have more experience, different opinions, etc.

BBC Iplayer Working and how to, with files

Been trying for about two days to get this working, was really annoying me that when i got the nexus 7, i could not use i player.
So here it is for the others that are having problems with it.
Install the two apk's attached.
If you have been trying to get it working with other versions of iplayer and flash, please go into app manager and clear the cache and data of these apps before opening them.
go to apps and launch i player and enjoy.
No need to use other browsers now.
just installed those files, working well. thanks.

Simple indeed but The picture quality is a bit crud with this method _ if u install flash and Firefox or dolphin mini and set to desktop user agent you can just go to the iPlayer website and select and the stream adjusts to your bandwidth and you can view the HD streams too! You have to put up with the flakiness of flash in a browser but you can still watch in glorious techno vision.

Edited: I meant to say use the Firefox beta from play and then set request desktop - then go to normal iPlayer website.
So far is most stable way to get high quality viewing and HD options. HD stuff looks awesome - other versions just look poo in comparison.
If u want to show someone iPlayer on N7 then the above is the easiest and best imo

Funny thing that, im no expert here, but when i wiped the Nexus and re installed the i player and flash as i said above, i got the same thing. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could explain. But also i Rooted the device and set the dpi to 160 for tabley mode before i installed. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Greetings XDA! I have been a follower of XDA for a long time, but this is happens to be my first post, so I figured to commemorate it, I would share V1.0 of my Nexus 10 Arcade machine using the Icade unit! The unit has been given a massive cosmetic overall with brand new custom artwork, and will soon feature LED backlight in V2. Hope you guys enjoy it and it's good to be here!

I built a full size arcade cabinet that runs MAME - it's a lot of fun. I'd love to get MAME running on my Nexus 10, but I haven't found a version that works well full screen.
What software are you using?
Also, if anyone is interested, I ripped some sounds from Galaga (ringtone & notification) - almost guarantees your phone will sound unique.

I realized my problem with Mame4Droid Reloaded was that I was using incompatible ROMs. I found some ROMs that were the right version.
If you're not using Mame4Droid Reloaded, what emulator are you using?
Text removed form original post:
Any chance you could send me a link to the version of MAME your using? I've tried mame4droid (can't get full screen) and mame4droid reloaded (can't get most of my ROMs to work). I was hoping to find a fairly simple solution that would let me use my existing Roms full screen.

This has become quite a time hog...
Mame4Droid Reloaded. 0.139 is running great. I think I might pick up a PS3 controller - seems to be the best option for a universal controller. I don't need to go the iCade route for a controller since I've already got a full size cabinet.
Researching and finding newer versions (0.139u1 compatible) of all my favorite ROMs has made me want to update my cabinet to run the same version as my tablet. I forgot how much fun messing with MAME & various front ends can be - and how quickly a lot of time can be spent.
Anyone know of an inexpensive bluetooth controller with a trackball? I so want to play my favorite arcade game ever, Marble Madness, and was disappointed to learn that MAME4droid doesn't support the Nexus 10 accelerometer. Actually, it does support it but only for left/right (driving) controls.
Good luck finding a trackball gamepad in general... FPS players have been asking for this for a few years now lol... You might be able to use a trackball mouse or keyboard though
This is awesome!

Thank you kind Sir. I was looking for a way to do this for quite a while now.
This trick only works with the version that is currently in the Play Store, not the current modified (screen off and 1080p playback) one that is floating around XDA.
Still, once switched to the homescreen, screen-off playback works too.

Yeah but you need root + custom rom to use Halo (I know there are some app that emulate it). Viral can use on any device and its very fast, probably use less resources than the Youtube app itself. I can even use it as an offline video player if you set links to open in pop up mode (which then can be fullscreened), I don't even need MXPlayer anymore. Also with Viral you can select YouTube videos to play in any existing resolution available.
