[Q] What is the best way to remove TouchWiz and have stock Android? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got this phone and having got used to a Nexus phone before (and before that always having used custom roms such as cyanogen) I cannot stand the TouchWiz (or whatever it is) rubbish that Samsung clog their phone up with. It really spoils the device in my opinion. The standard Jelly Bean software is much cleaner.
So, what is the best way to remove it and get back to a nice clean phone?
I'm happy to root & install a rom if necessary.
Is something like this the way to go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052739 ? Or do I need to wait for Cyanogen to support it?
Cheers!

It can be removed but must have rooted phone, wouldn't recommend though. If you do remove make sure you have a alternative like Apex or Nova launcher installed first, plenty of themes to use with them. Hope that helps you.
Hit thanks if it did.

From my experience, like you coming from a classic android experience even Motorola didn't go this far. The phone is still very young and possibly due to its bigger brother may not receive as much attention. So although there sent many try a custom rom,.
I'd avoid stripping or freezing out the bloat. Although you may be fine for a while you may brick, and if you can't get it into DL mode your fried.

Wait for aosp or cm Roms to come up - its the best way . As you probably know remove the touchwiz apk won't give you any vanilla experience ! And while you wait try other launchers if you want to break out of touchwiz
leap before you think

Ok, thanks for the help guys. That's pretty much what I thought.
Fingers crossed this model get's support from CM.

[Q] putting stock google rom on my galaxy

Hey, this is my first time posting, I've been browsing a bit since I got my galaxy. I cant really find an answer to what I'm looking for.
I'm not a big fan of samsung's UI on my galaxy, I'd much prefer the Android 2.1 stock that comes on the nexus one... no fancy stuff. Just basic... How would I go abouts doing this? I'm totally new to this, I know I'd have to root my device, after that I'm lost.
Thanks A lot!
Some guys have created a stock Android ROM for the SGS, but it's not fully functional, no camera and no video.
Android can run on many devices (even iPhone and Palm) but the problem are the drivers. If there's no driver, you'll find yourself without camera, wifi, GPS or whatever, and possibly the battery use will be greater.
Yep, there was a vanilla rom but nothing worked, pointless for everyday use.

So what would be your recommendation for a rom? seeing as they're are so many out there.
there are a couple of ROMS in the dev section without the touchwiz launcher
example:
[ROM]Rombie v2a -*I9000XXJPH*- Themed|no TouchWiz|Pre-Rooted|
personally i have never used one so i can't give any feedback on the matter. if you dont want to mess around too much you could always use a launcher like ADWlauncher or LauncherPro, these basically reskin the home screens to a more likeable layout (by many), there is even a home replacement called launcher2 i think, which looks very basic.
I'm looking for something similar. I'm already rooted, unlocked and running ADW, but I just can't cope with Samsung's stock phone and sms apps. They're truly bloody awful.
all i can say is: wait for http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ ...
it's great and it can not take very long any more (i hope)

You can say that again the sms app is a complete fail!!!
I don't mind the dialer so much. but the rest of touchwiz and the widgets is a waste of space..

[Q] 's on Root Security, Tablet apps on a Note, Paranoia & More.

I have a few more questions before I make the leap to buy my first ever Android based device.
The Questions:
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Is there currently anything I should stay way from that doesn't currently work or isn't stable with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich?
Will Adobes Apps (Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?Would Paranoid Android assist me in this concern? (I think it would based on what I have seen)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.
- Doesn't really matter anymore. If anyone would still like to answer it -here it is.

Bump!
This is the last time I intend to bump this (not that I wanted to in the first place). If this is truly meant to drift off unanswered than so be it.
I just hope that in the event of something horrible (or at least unknown) occurring to my phone that I can search the answer...since asking doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Ok, if you can download it, Adobe it should work. You can try a custom rom which supports tablet mode should you not be able to download with normal dpi. That will enable tablet mode in market, after clearing market data and reboot it should become available for dl.
Currently there are a couple good stock ICS roms and a couple good custom roms. All (except cm9 xplodwild is safe, not other cm9) kernels are dangerous due to Brickrisk of known bug. However, all cm9 based suffer the bugs of cm9, speakerphone broken, high battery consumption, etc. Most have their own bugs on top.
Now ICS source is out wait a couple days as more custom roms and kernels will be build as well as bugfixes. And off course, support the devs with donations for coffee, so they stay awake and make no errors lmao .

1. No. Truth is, root or no root, you are equally vulnerable to malware. Just read the reviews and all before installing any, you know, 'unknown' app.
2. Wiping, factory resets and CWM. Although this is just for stock German ICS and older ICS ROMs like Stunner. New ROMs like Paranoid, CM9 are safe. Still in case you must search before you do anything with custom ROMs just to be on the safe side.
3. Can't find Photoshop Touch on the play store. But there must be a work around am sure. I am using Paranoid by the way.
4. You can pretty much flash a custom ROM and flash various themes and things. Don't know about RAM but you can over clock or under clock your processor. There are various tweaks scattered so just search for it and more often than not you will find it. Carbon tweaks are really good. Search them in themes and apps.

Brick Risk Eh?...Well this is why I ask these things. Ill stay away from cm9/kernels. I know enough now that it looks like can look into some custom roms with a *little* more on the ball.

Wouldn't do it any other way. I've already learned alot just from searching (presuming I can figure out the right question to input in the query)

Cyanogenmod and other roms?

I wish someone would be able to port this onto our devices. Can anyone shed a light regarding this topic please?
Please put all your suggestions and questions here.
The more demand it is, the better. Maybe a developer might get the device and start porting well known roms with native jelly bean? 4.2?
=D I don't want to come across as a leecher, I am just interested in getting to grips with rom'ing and the android way. I don't want to regret getting this device. =)
That is just it, once the dev gets the device then things get ported.
However, I will say that with the latest releases from Samsung (4.1.2 on the 9300, will be with us sooner or later) with the latest additions including Multi Window I am going to stick with the TW framework as I feel these innovations outweigh having a cleaner Android rom. Having had mine for well over a month now and using a Launcher ontop of TW I can honestly say I have not experienced any lag anywhere which is the only reason I would go for a non TW build in the first place.
Just my view, am sure others will feel differently!

That's a good point actually. But I want to be able to try different roms so i can form some sort of opinion. maybe dual boot a stock android based rom like paranoid android, cyanogenmod and a touchwiz based rom to try the note 2 multi window features.

Dual boot! Well that is a completely different ball game!
It would be really a shame if our device wouldn' get any attention. LTE technologie and 2 gigs of ram should be worth developing. I just asked teamhacksung at irc chat if there would be any developing, but the answer was no.
I really hope someone comes up with new ideas and methods (as I am a total noob at this stuff and would sadly never be able to do all the programming).
With all the customisation, kernel and stuff my old sgs1 is almost as fast, if not faster than my sgs3 LTE (apart of booting of course).
Let's get some loving for our black smartphones =]

Its all timing realy, if they had released the 9305 at the same time as the 9300 then most would have opted for the 9305 but they did not and most cannot afford another handset etc... leavign our community pretty small. However the 9305 is now becoming more widely avaialble with sim free retailers starting to stock them soon so things may pick up, you never know!
We may loose out a little here but I guess all we can look farward to is that the next flagship will have the 2gb and probably LTE from the offest.
I have happily been running a ligher rom with a launcher and custom notifications etc... am happy with that, for now anyway!

Yes dont worry about teamhacksung they are in tantrum mode with samsung havent you heard? LOOL Because samsung have not released the sources as of yet. So just hope we have other devs that step on the plate if you want CM10 Which i dont like that much. Or hope samsung releases the codes,
People like cm10 cause its faster UI but have you tried the 4.2 launcher on our phone? i think it Is exactly the same speed UI as CM10 only with less options. So It doesnt take much to get the same smoothness its just that touchwiz has more animations and is much busier then Pure JB... So patience is the key now and we have to wait and see which dev decides to start working
Yeah, my I9305 lay about 2 Days, because my I9000 with the great CM-based Mackay Rom and the fantastic Semaphore Kernel are awesome in speed, look and Features. But S3 with stock not.. But after some reading, I decided to Pandoriam Rom for my S3 and it's great until now. But i miss the simple Grey cm10 Theme, a solid Kernel to set govenours/deep idle and the whole Stuff, the only 3g Option, that gorgeous lockscreen and most Voodoo sound. I hope that will come with time everything.

New Rom Suggestion, Coming from GB

Hello XDA,
It's been a while since I've gone through the whole process of finding a good rom. I'm running Gingerbread still, a variant of DarkyRom_3.4.1 currently. Flash works great. Probably going to miss that. But it's getting slow. I need a reinstall.
Plus, cracked my screen. Bezel edges and corners are also torn up. Paid $140 for new screen and replacement rear back/bezel/case http://www.ebay.com/itm/281265794618?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
So, anybody spend time testing ROMs in the last month? What's new, stable, and clean? I've skimmed the rom list, but nothing beats interactive testing. For looks, I want AOSP but can't decide if I want TW with Apex or Nova, or CM 10.1 like SuperNexus. Trying for speed, fluidity, no bloat.
What have people settled on lately? Opinions are all I ask
How horrible is Flash compatibility now? I tried flash on a Nexus 4 on latest (4.4.2?) and it wouldn't play firstrowsports.eu or projectfree.tv so that's kind of a bummer...
Any suggestions would be great! Don't want to spend a full week testing roms and rewiping my phone..I don't have a second to use while I play with my Note, and I'm kinda busy with work lately to wipe my phone over and over.
Another question while I'm at it... Is a nandroid backup taken with my outdated CWM going to restore OK after I upgrade? Thinking I'll be ok.
Thanks :good:
If you are too lazy to test yourself then stay on stock rom.
Why should other members do the work for you and write here - which is simply a best rom thread and so against XDA rules (reading them might help you).
And: many members who cooked or developed roms spent a lot of time doing this and making good threads, tutorials and instructions. So please use these and pay a little respect to them by doing so.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me I'm lazy. I work hard, thank you very much.
Why should other members "do the work for me"? Well, without trying to justify anything, I've answered questions for other people, simply out of the kindness of my being, just because I know the answer. Last time I put in the effort of testing rom after rom, I shared my knowledge. I'm sure there's other people out there like me. I mean, with your methodology, we should all be told to go Google it...which is akin to telling someone to go shove it.
If you've put in the effort of trying roms, and you have the time to leave me a helpful response, and you don't consider it "working for me", I'd appreciate it.
At the moment im on c-rom kitkat its pretty fast and have alot of options. Its not touchwiz . Everyone has their own likings so flash one if you dont like flash another. End of story. I did what you did before asking for best roms and at the end i pick a rom no one mention in the thread in my own phone

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I've been using the OmniROM variants lately and found them to be slightly faster than TW-based ones. Right now I'm on Asylum OmniROM Naughties 4.4.2 and it's been pretty stable and zippy so far. Battery life is same as with TW. Not sure about Flash compatibility as I don't use it. As for nandroid backups, I recently read that you need to restore using the same kernel/recovery as you used when you made the backup. Not sure if that's true or not, but something to keep in mind if you're jumping from ROM to ROM.
AryaMod 5.5 is the best rom right now and has Flash support enabled by default. Every JB (or even KITKAT) version can handle Flash if you sideload Flash Player apk and a compatible Browser (Like Firefox). The stock, Samsung browser have Flash support enabled without any hack.

Thanks for your reply, as well as the others. I'll be giving AryaMod a go.
I [and many others] really wish samsung would publish the hardware composer and other needed source for AOSP builds....It seems like I keep loving the AOSP interface more. Paranoid is awesome. AOKP helps little things. CM features are also great. Together, perfect.
For me, Stunner 2 is GUI perfect. Functionality missing though. Of course, need that hardware acceleration. Can't use my Vulkano (Hava). Can't watch Top Gear without transcoding from MKV.
On another "note" (no pun intended lol), does anybody know a 5.3" or larger phone that is 100% AOSP friendly?

Depends on your tech savvy. Personally I don't mess around with roms when I have everything I need in stock, especially on my primary phone. Sometimes you also mess up your connectivity to your carrier (this is called EFS partition, back it up!). I've messed with Xperia phones before and I like the stock roms on them. I say don't put cm, unless you HATE your stock rom. Even then you can just theme it with Xposed if you're on that level or use a 3rd-party launcher for beginners and of course you gotta root it Rooting is more for system tweaks tho, only after you install Xposed you can do theming.
Hope this helps,

Personally, I disliked Cyanogen mod because I was so used to the look of my phone. Cyanogen mod changes the entire feel and asthetics of your phone to increase its efficiency. I personally couldn't put up with it, but it may be different for you! I would just stick to stock rom unless you intend to stretch your phone to its absolute limit, in which case Cyanogen mod will help you!
camera quality will be lost, battery life is the same like stock, im using it since jan, sometimes annoying bugs are present..
there is no efs on sony and there are no problems with those like on samy or lg.

I went to cyanogenmod last week, it's fine so far and has many features which can make you excited. the CM based ROMs are super fast and smooth, them can give you another feeling comparing with the stock.
If you want to install CM, you need to unlock your Bootloader, it means you will lost your Bravia Engine forever unless you relock it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/tutorial-xperia-z-zl-bootloader-t2153261
As far as I am concerned, I always want to explore something new and XDA forum is better than SONY. believe me
Sony fw is actually based on AOSP/CM itself.. But if u r bored with stock, u are always welcome to try CM ROMs.. They provide their own features, customizations and a different theme engine.. Plus CM11 actually gives u more battery backup and better RAM management.. Hence an upgrade in the performance level.. But both are good in its own ways.. :good:
Only time I've moved to cm is when the manufacturer stops development for the phone, or if the standard rom is just bad. I had a Moto Atrix that was worth the move to cm. The Xperia is fine without cm and I can't think of anything useful it would add.

its nice to take a break from sony's ui. ive tried PAC and PA and some others for a month or so, in the end i ended up going back to sony because CM nightlies are too buggy atm.
its really up to you, both offers slightly different things, CM has more themes to choose from and like i said its a nice break from sonys ui if you got bored of it.
