cwm / philz = root ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

do i understand that right, that i can root my stock gingerbread by flashing this cwm/philz kernel, without the need to wipe any data?
i just want to flash ultimate rom. it says i need cwm. i don't fully understand why cwm comes together with a kernel and why that kernel gives root on any rom. how to root topic doesn't mention the flashing of just a kernel to get root. i guess i got something wrong here?

You cannot flash PhilZ kernel on a GB Rom. It wouldn't boot up if you did.

for the Note the kernel and recovery are integrated, each kernel has a corresponding cwm recovery and root features too
so when you want to root a rom you have to flash a suitable kernel which will give it a cwm recovery to flash custom roms from and it will also give root features too.
Phillz kernels root stock ICS Touchwizz roms when flashed from stock recovery. after a complete reboot you can safely wipe from recovery and flash custom roms.
BTW - this thread belongs to the QA forum.

but would let me use cwm to backup and flash another rom?

You can't flash ANYTHING from stock 3e GB recovery. It won't pass signature verification.
(Unlike ICS). You need to root it first, then use an app such as mobile odin to flash a kernel which has CWM recovery.

Edit: to root GB without going through Dr. Ketans long winded process, just download Chainfires exynos app from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626 click on it, and select root device

unfort my kernel is not bugged. can i flash a bugged kernel?
i think i understood that i need to use odin to flash on a GB device? if so, i hope i can directly flash ultimate custom rom using odin?

1. Root Gb
2. Install Mobile Odin
3.Flash Cf-Root or Abyss (both are GB with CWM recovery)
4.Boot into recovery, do wipes and flash new ROM.
NOTE: custom roms can't be flashed with Odin.

[Q] flashing back to stock.

hey everyone
im flashing my phone back to stock in order to flash a new custom rom (themidteam 1.1) and i must start from GB or ICS based on LP5, now, as the rom im using is not based on LP5, i have to flash back to GB and start all over agine, now, my question is, how to flash the stock rom? do i simply flash it using odin? or there are other proccess?
and is there anyway to make my ICS rom (midnote 2.0) which is based on LP1, based on LP5?
sorry for these noob questions
and thanks
Yes Odin is the way
Flash stock GB (or one of the pre rooted stock GB) using Odin, get CF Root for that ROM and then follow the flashing procedure described in the OP of tue ROM you want to flash

Yes Abyss Kernel is a GB kernel, you can flash it on rooted GB ROMs and even keep it if you like it
After you flash ICS ROM (or restore an ICS backup) Abyss kernel will be over written by the kernel provided in the ROM zip (or backup zip)

1)you can flash stock GB with root access using mobile odin and everroot option without CF5.6.
2)backup is always a good idea.
3)full wipe option is not a good idea, because we have superbrick bug thingy around. Btw stock GB itself is a wipe.
Hi,
I have quite the same question, but I need more details :
I have a GB kernel with CWM : CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LC1-v5.3-CWM5
I have a rom GB : Rooted_Stock_Odex_N7000XXLC1_FRANCE.rar
I am curently under paranoid v0.4, with original kernel installed by paranoid.
I have mobile odin.
I put all my files on my sdCard.
in which order I have to flash ?
ROm, then kernel ?
kernel then Rom ?
I think Mobile odin will proceed to a reboot after a flash.
thanks
Olivier

[ SOLVED ] Want to update but use Custom Kernel

Dear Everyone
I want to ask everyone
Now I use a custom kernel and still stock rom , if i want to update to stock rom via ODIN
should i flash the kernel to Stock Kernel first and flash the stock rom , or just flash the rom anyway via ODIN ?
I am still use stock rom ( ICS 4.0.4 )
and the kernel is standard Notecore v13
I'm sorry my English Is so Bad
If you flash update via PC Odin, your custom kernel will be replaced by unsafe stock kernel, as well you will lose root. You have to reflash custom kernel to root and also need to reset counter.
If you want to preserve root and custom kernel, you can use Mobile Odin
Find 'ROM switching' from my signature for detail guide how to use Mobile Odin.

[Q] Restoring the phone after using CWM.zip and SU-Busybox-installer.zip

My apologies for the noob situation (new to Android tho a veteran iphone jailbreaker) but I did try my best reading lots of threads to seek the exact info I need:
Things I've done:
1) I got my N7000 with stock ICS 4.0.4 (Kernel: ZSLPM) yesterday
2) I followed some online resources in my local language forums and used both CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip to "root" the phone
3) I then started researching for ways to flash to JB rom but found out info regarding possible bricking hazard with stock ICS kernel and CWM.zip
appreciate if anyone could point me the safe way to :
either
1) Remove the CMW.zip and Su-Busybox-installer.zip to unroot the device and make it back to virgin state? so I can start everything over again and follow Dr. Ketan guides for rooting with safe kernel (I read we could flash the unstaller but that also need to put me back to Recovery, safe to do this under CWM.zip?)
OR
2) how could I flash my current setup (rooted already with CWM.zip) with a safe kernel ?
Thanks very much for any guidance.
Regards,
Anthony

So you mean after I root my N7000 with CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip I have actually already flashed my kernel and rom in the phone already? I thought I have only rooted it but the kernel and rom are still untouched? please advise and thanks for responding.

You can go to Settongs>>About Phone & under "Kernel version" you will be able to see which kernel you are using (for ex: my Note shows HydraCore_v5.34 which is a custom kernel).
So, if you are still on Stock (i.e., un-safe kernel), use PC Odin & flash custom kernel (use Dr. Ketan's guide). Make sure *NOT* to wipe/factory reset when you are on stock kernel. In case if you want to unroot, then also you have Dr. Ketan's guide in the same post.
Start using thanks button rather than posting thanks.
Even if u r on stock rom and stock kernal to unroot flash them back using odin

CWM.zip is a tenp recovery.. it doesnot stay in the system after reboot. thou su-busybox stays... but if the phone has booted up that means u have root access now...
just install the philz kernel from here for ur rom. this is a safe kernel and u will be able to do wipes. this kernel can be flashed from stock recovery.

Things are all good now after I got stuck with my first attempt flashing to Abyss which I later found out it doesn't support ICS then I flashed it to Hydracore then after that flash it to RocketROm and I'm now one happy user

Next time do not use CWM zip to root your phone. Use Dr Ketan's method of rooting, because its dangerous.

install a super-su but nothing is change and i can't open super su. it's wanna root permission What can i do?
Install the zip version of the kernel using recovery not the tar version. You have flashed the tar version from PC Odin thats why you have a yellow triangle
Worked fine for me
I've been hunting for this information for ages having managed to brick my Note trying to install PA - thanks for the info - simple and to the point!
..and yep it worked!

Step-by-step guide: stop using/upgrading a leak, start using the offical JB releases from scratch.
a) Install a JB stock Rom with PC Odin and root it with Phil's Kernel, or
b) Install a Custom Rom from recovery (after installing Phil's Kernel in stock recovery and rebooting into it again)

In XDA developers forum you'll find everything because it has a clear structure of subforums and a fantastic search engine.
One more hint: you are already in one of the subforums you'll need - you'll only have to go one step up and use the two round things near your nose.

Yes. Download philz kernel (zip file) go to recovery flash the zip file. Go back to recovery do the wipes. Download XXLT4 or XXLT5 and put the phone into download mode and flash XXLT4 or 5 using Odin. Once successfull, flash philz kernel again from recovery, you will have root and custom recovery.
