[Q] Overclock Razr I - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
Did anyone tried to overclock the Intel's Atom medfield processor in the Razr I?
Till I know, this processor is originally clocked in 1,6 GHZ, however, I wonder if it can be clocked to more than 2ghz, what would increase even more the speed on this powerful device.

The processor operates at 2GHz real, so when can overclok, performance should be monster

Droid/Milestones' weak graphic performance. OC possible?

The Droid2/X use the same graphic processor as Droid 1, which is PowerVR SGX 530. According to the datasheet, this core is designed to run at 200Mhz with power of rendering 14M triangles/sec. But our Droid/Milestone runs underclocked at 110Mhz(7M tri/s) while D2/X at 200Mhz. That leads to major UI responsiveness&gaming difference between D2&D1.
I wonder if there's any possibility to overclock the GPU as well?

As far as I know this has been tried (overclocking), but with no results (constant reboots)
Imagination Technologies (PowerVR) defines the GPU internals and sells the "plans" for the part, to be included in SOCs like TI's OMAP.
But PowerVR does not, however, define the exact clocks at which the parts should run, nor other things like number of memory channels, memory speed, etc.
Texas Instruments are the ones who defined the GPU clocks. The OMAP 34xx chips (Droid 1, Milestone, XT720, Flipout, etc) are made using 65nm process, and that determines a certain power consumption using certain clocks, hence why they defined a ~100MHz clock for the GPU and ~600-800MHz for the CPU.
The OMAP 36xx (Droid X, Droid 2, Defy, etc) are made using a newer, smaller 45nm process, which allows them to run at higher speeds while spending approx. the same power, which is why Texas Instruments decided to clock the GPU at ~200MHz and the CPU at ~1-1.2GHz.
So it's not like the Milestones and Droids have their GPUs underclocked, those are just their factory clocks.
Of course, overclocking the GPU would be nice and it could be possible. If someone found out how to change the GPU's voltage and clocks, I'm sure it could come in handy in future games.
However, right now, the 1st gen Milestones/Droids are running every high-end HD game from gameloft at full speed, and I bet it'll even do Infinity Blade and other UE3 games when they're out for Android.
Every "HD" Android game has to be compatible with the 1st-gen Snapdragon's GPU, the Adreno 200, which is a lot slower than the SGX530 @ 100MHz, so we're sitting confortably above the base spec for now. And with all the Windows Mobile 7 phones coming with a 1st-gen Snapdragon (mandatory requirement), it'll be like this for a while.
So there's really not a big need for overclocking the GPU right now, except for getting higher scores in mobile benchmarks (some of them terribly unoptimized, like GLBenchmark 1.1 and 2.0).
Furthermore, I it seems the first factor to limit the 1st-gen Droids in games will be the RAM amount.
The first UE3-based game for Android is already out, and it requires 512MB of RAM.
So the game runs on Nexus One and not on a Droid/Milestone, which has far superior graphics performance.
(I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the fact that Android doesn't allow graphics buffering in the main memory, though, which could be resolved in future firmware revisions).
Then again, overclocking the GPU would be cool, and I'm pretty sure getting our SGX530 to work @ ~200MHz would significantly increase the gaming longevity of our phones for quite a while.

"The Manhattan Project" on Galaxy S Series just made me curious about Droid's gpu oc, because SGS also use a PowerVR gpu. But things isn't easy due to a fact that one is made by TI while another is made by samsung, the structure inside both SoCs may be completely different.
But I still hope someone capable would try something on this.
That's really cool and significantly lengthen the lifetime of our Droid and Milestone.

Definitely part of the optimization --a fast ROM with a good theme like the Droid X theme on the GOT 2.2.1 ROM has as fast a GUI as I've encountered on Android, even without overclock.
Also take in consideration that all the current 2.1 and 2.2 roms have a cap of 30fps in 2D, perhaps when the final 2.2 update arrives there will be some perfomance gain

so my question is: is it safe to use daily the cpu at 1.5ghz of DHD ?
Some phones can handle a higher o/c than others. I've been running mine at 1.2ghz for months now with no issues. I can increase that but I've never felt the need, although many others do ;-)
Yeah, i think 1.5ghz wouldnt be any problem for most/all devices.
With my Milestone back then, which had 550 mhz, i personally was running between 800-1000 mhz, alot others were running even 1200 mhz there.
But on DHD; i personally would do (max!) 1.2 or 1.3 ghz, because this is absolutely enough for most Roms to be smooth.

the max i overclock for daily basis is 1.2Ghz but when i tried 1.8Ghz back when lee released his nutter kernel my phone froze.
But i did read somewhere the cpu can be overclocked to 1.5Ghz without any issues but over that people do get some problems.

Using any CPU frequency that is not default ( underclocked or overclocked ) requires testing and manipulating the various variables. The CPU needs to be in sync with the GPU and the other parameters. Needs modifications in the kernel itself. The device is not made to run at those frequencies. You will burn your device, sooner or later.

I know that it possible to double the original clock speed on the motorola milestone 1, but how safe is it, in terms of overall reliability? a friend gave me a milestone that has been previously overclocked to 1.2 ghz, and i want to reduce the speed back to about 800 Mhz, but i`m wondering if it`s possible to have already permanently shortened the life of the processor....any opinion is welcomed !

AND... YES underclock to 800MHz. i think 800 is a very stable and good speed for the milestone. you will not see or feel any difference to 1GHz or more.

Mhh.. 800 GHz seems a little much i think. Try around 700 GHz, your phone should also be a lot cooler

Napsterr hit the nail on the head. ANY overclocking will reduce the lifespan of the processor, and harm battery life.
I personally have mine OC'ed to 1.25ghz without any problems, but that is because I know when it kicks I can replace it. If you aren't able to replace it, the safest option is always stock clock/voltage.
yeah i agree with all of you above, 800mhz is a sensible speed……over 800 will make milestone heat up a real lot and drain out battery at a alarming rate……

HP Touchpad Overclocking Question

Just recently got a touchpad. After reading around, I found out the 64gb version is clocked at 1.5ghz. I have a 32.
Both seem to have the S3 APQ8060 CPU, which is 1.2-1.5ghz. Does this mean the touchpad is technically overclocked..ie..100% safe to OC to 1.5?

The 64 gb are clocked at 1.5, the 16 & 32 gb are underclocked at 1.2........
In webos I have it oc'd to 1.7 max, 384 min. using Uberquernel and the preware speed tweaks. In android, I oc to 1.7 max, 384 min using Antutu CPU Master.
I have had no issues, but others have. Make sure you have a good backup, just in case.

Underclocking to 1.2 allowed HP to claim longer lasting battery life.
I've found little difference oc'n to 1.7.

To save battery life mostly, Apple underclocks the iPhone processor IIRC for the same reason.
Also while manufacturing chips for same speed, not every chip will achieve the same clocking...keeping everything same one chip can go to 1.9 while other can just go 1.5...so most manufacturer sets at stable frequency..so that every chip can achieve that
Almost all devices are under clocked in some way.
just make sure you use a cpu tuning app like setcpu or whatever to tune your frequencies
Most Touchpads can easily do 1.5 since that's the rated speed of the chip.
1.7 or higher is not within specifications and not all TP's can do it. I have one that runs 1.7 right now without issue, but the last two I had refused to go above 1.5.
The reason has something to do with the nature of the cpu making process. Just to let you know, there are some variants of desktop cpu even though they have same architecture, take i7 for example, why do you think one sells more expensive than the other? The reason being the most expensive one (9 series) has least defect in the cpu, enable it to utilize the most transistors and this is pretty rare, therefore they priced higher.
All cpu were made in the same process, the one that have more defects will priced lower, they in fact shut down the defective part and mark them 'more energy efficient' while they are effectively running less transistor.
The same thing happened here, not all cpu is perfect, so not all cpu can be clocked high. So they decided to take 1.2ghz, as it is probably where most manufactured cpu able to cope with. i.e. if you device can run 2ghz or more that mean you get the almost perfect cpu, as simple as that.
My Touchpad overclocked in WebOS @ 1.7 but can't get higher without it crashing. In Android however, using Bricked Kernel on CM Official Nightlies I can reach 2.02 Ghz (not stable without vcore changes but could be stable, just keep in mind of how warm the Touchpad's getting) and 2.157 Ghz (with unsafe voltages for benchmark suicide runs).

With the right governor and profiles, 1.5GHz is not an issue.

[Question] Moto G 2014 Processor Model

So, i got curious and downloaded the "CPU z" application to have a look at my phones specs in detail. I found that my processor was the "4x ARM Cortex A7 @1.19Ghz". however the advertised processor is the "1.20GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400" now, is this just a pre-manufacturing model name and I'm just being stupid or is something fishy going on here?
Also i find it odd that the actual processor in my device is clocked at 1.19 when i in fact was under the idea that it's a 1.20 clock speed. I'm sure it wouldn't make that much difference but still seem odd?
could someone put my mind at rest and tell me that I'm just being an amateur and to go back into my android noobie cave or can someone confirm that in fact something fishy is going down.
