Ok, so my P1000 (stock Gingerbread, bought SIM-freeon and currently on Vodafone UK) has become soooo slow over the past two years of ownership, and a minor water contact today forced a factory reset... So a clean JPZ based Tab to play with...
Been toying with the idea (in hope for better performance) to get a custom ROM from here, maybe one based on ICS (if the hardware can take it), but after a couple of days of reading through all the posts and threads, I confess I am at a complete loss: can anyone recommend a stable working ROM (even if essentially based on stock images) that could/should improve the tired tab's performance? Also, not clear: do most ROMs here come with rooting or do I then need to apply CFRoot separately? Lastly, at the time of my last post (way way back), Overcome ROMs seemed to be the way to go, but today their site is down?

Great, many thanks, downloading now... As a follow up, I understand this is their version of 2.3.6 (Gingerbread); don't want to be a , but was wondering if there's an ICS ROM out there for the P1000? Also, is overclocking possible on the Overcome ROM? (the idea is to try and get a device that actually runs better than stock GB, so not even sure if the hardware is up to speed with ICS)

There are AOSP based ICS/JB
Just look for them in dev section.
Either CM or AOKP.
You still need overcome kernel to have cwm first in order to flash them.

There is a relly good CM10 (JB) ROM I'm using: sapir-rom.blogspot.com It's nightly, but it works perfectly for me with very good performance.

I just got a captivate last night and i have unlocked and and rooted it
it has a firmware of 2.1 - update 1
idk if thats the most recent update
i was told i can not update the phone with a t-mobile sim card in it so can anyone post a thread on updated versions and what do you all think is the best rom?

There is no "best" rom. It's what's "best" for you. Read the forums and learn to flash 2.2 roms first.

I recommend trying MIUI, the customization is what puts it over the top!

I've not been on 2.1 since phone came out. I would use odin one click to goto 2.2 stock. Root it then install cwm and then follow this guide if your going to try Galnet's MIUI.

Then just pop the MIUI.zip on root of sdcard and install from CWM.

Wow... so... You should probably READ a lot more before flashing anything, but I'll give you a few hints to get you going:
1) Make sure you understand what a "PBL", "SBL", "Kernel", and "Modem" are and how they are placed/installed in your phone.
2) Learn how to correctly and safely use ODIN (and/or Heimdall).
3) Learn about the various methods of recovery for "soft bricks", and if necessary for your hardware revision, possibly invest in a jig (also learn what a jig is)
4) There are 2 different types/branches of ROMs for the Captivate:
-- Samsung Branch
-- AOSP Branch
Within the "Samsung" types you have:
- i9000 ROMs (like JVP, JVR, JP8, etc)
- i897 ROMs (like JF6, KF1, etc)
Within the "AOSP" types you have:
- CM7
- MIUI
- Other AOSP-based ROMs
Which is "better" is relative. CM7 and MIUI have features that aren't present in the Samsung ROMs, and both offer a bit more customization than the Samsung ROMs. However, only the Samsung ROMs offer GPU accelerated video playback, and they tend to have significantly better battery life than the AOSP-type ROMs. Also the Samsung-type ROMs used to be much more stable than the AOSP branches, but recently, the tide may have turned in the other direction. Some of the low-level radio settings are also unavailable in any of the AOSP builds. And finally, some of the Samsung stock camera features are unavailable in CM7/MIUI.
It really all depends what you want... Do you want closer to stock "open source" Android? Or do you want Samsung's vision of what they think Android should be?
Also, the whole kernel/modem part is dependent on what branch of ROM you plan on running. When using a i9000-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i9000 kernel and modem. When using a i897-Samsung ROM, you pretty much have to use an i897 kernel and modem. The rules for CM7/MIUI are a bit more vague, but at the very least you'll need to use a CM7/MIUI (most AOSP-type kernels are interchangeable) compatible kernel.
The best advice is really to try them all out and see what you like the most. Just a suggestion, but become familiar with Odin one click. Make sure your captivate has 3 button recovery, and read, re- read, and read again the directions of every rom before you flash it. Always make a nandroid back up if possible, and read the threads.if you have questions, so did someone else and the answer is probably already out there .use search. Some People will rip your head off if you don't. as far as miui goes .....i was a flashaholic when I got phone. After switching to miui, It is very unlikely that I will ever leave. Best rom ever imho. And it updates every Friday so that satisfied the flashing urge. Usually it gets better with each release. The last couple have been a little rough though. Might want to spend the 8 bucks and have a download jig on standby. Can get it from mobiltech videos. Its worth it though

a very simple and easy way to start with...
2.1 is eclair..
2.2 froyo
2.3 gingerbread..
means 2.1 is oldest and 2.3 is latest in case of official roms..
so obviously new version will hav more features and faster in speed...
so now u can take baby step and install 2.2 ..and use it for few days..and get the feel of it..then again after sometime u can install 2.3...
or else u can directly jump to 2.3....which is gingerbread....u can install stock kf1 on ur phone..its leaked official gb...if u search a bit..u will get it..
then u can use it for a lil while and get the feel of gb stock rom..in the meanwhile u can read xda abt available custom roms..and then install any of them...
coz every memeber here in xda will suggest the custom rom they r using..coz they r lovin the rom then only they r using....like for me..since the time i started flashin..i always used APEX ROM..so i will say its the best....
but again thats just me..

First off most of the ROMS, Kernels or Modem threads all have fairly easy instructions in the first couple of thread posts so I have provided the links to those I like.
If you are looking for an ICS ROM try Team ICSSGS. It has been a while since they had any updates but the ROM is rock solid and the thread below should explain everything. There should be an immanent release of RC5 which I'm sure will be even better.

Another great ROM is SlimICS. This has more regular updates if you check out the first post it has a link to everything you need to know to get it running. I am personally running this ROM at the moment but will move back to Team ICSSGS as for me this is the best ROM.
If you miss the toggles in the notification bar for Team ICSSGS then download widgetsoid from the Play Store - free app that can be set up to sit in notification bar.
If you want root but plan on keeping a Stock Rom then check out CF-Root. All instructions in the first couple of posts. Lots of info but if you read it, it is fairly easy to understand. CF-Root is basically stock kernel with root. No CF-Root for JV9 but people have reported using either JVO or JVP.

NB. Before starting make sure to back up your EFS folder & make a Nandroid backup after getting root.
Also make sure to get everything you need first so if you run into issues that can be resolved quicker.
So get the ICS Rom you want, download your stock rom & odin at Sam Mobile.
Another great resource is SamMobile which has all the stock roms, odin etc.

Ah thats unfortunate, since my Paypal account is linked to my DebitCard managed
by my Telco... which I can only access via the Sim Toolkit. Its not a biggie tho.
Also I noticed that battery seems to drain quick... any suggestions?
Unfortunately battery drain is an issue with ICS although for my use battery has been similar to stock rom which has always been the best for me.
The way I use my phone I make sure gps, 3g, wifi & location stuff is all off - turn on when you need them. Also don't overclock.
Make sure you are logged out of latitude (was a massive battery drain in gingerbread for me). You can also try different modems (apparently better signal means less drain) Modem thread here. Try JW4 or one of these jvu, zsjpg, dxjv9, jvt, or you could try the nexus modems kf1, kb3, kj1 Nexus Modems (search in thread for link. )
With phone like this I get 2 to 4 days or about 3.5 to 4 hours of screen on.
You can also try Slim ICS as it has updated to ICS 4.0.4. although I am not noticing a big battery difference and plan to move back to Team ICSSGS as soon as RC5 comes out.
So far I have tried Teamhacksung build 17, CM9 latest nightly, AOKP, CNA, WeUI, Slim ICS & Team ICSSGS. I have tried the following kernels: icy glitch, devil & semaphore. Midnight kernel is supposed to give good battery life so you could try that.
My favourite has been Team ICSSGS with semaphore although currently on Slim ICS 3.3 only because it has ICS 4.0.4 & Team ICSSGS is still on ICS 4.0.3.
I'm running the ICSSGS Rom for a couple of days now and I have to agree, there's some battery drain.
Anyway, it's a good and stable rom and I did not have any problems since flashing it.
What you could also try is to switch off vibration if you not really need it.
What I did was disabeling the "Google location service" (not sure if this is the right translation as my phone is set to german language).
Anyway, even with a higher battery drain I wouldn't go back to Ginger.
There's always a jack around ... you just need to find it

Thanks for the link again, i have seen that link before and tried it (the one from the first post works for me) However, it doesnt seem to connect to my telcos server. Same result also on the first link provided. At any case I've given up on that for the meantime since my S is only my secondary phone and im getting a new debit card for my paypal. Oh I've now installed SlimIcs on my S and im loving it... feels more snappier. I didnt know that flashing could be addictive.

Unfortunately it is... Slim ics is great defintely my favourite at the moment as it has received regular updates and is running android 4.0.4 vs team icssgs on android 4.0.3. I'm sure once team icssgs update they will be back on top though.
For something different. Not quite as fast but still awesome try WeUi. All the rest are pretty much the same in my opinion. In general forum (i think) there is also a thread with bench marks for most of the roms.

is there any thing like that for note that deliver a speed and costumization ability beside that every thing working perfectly on it(pen and ...)

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.
For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)
Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

I'm currently using DarkyROM JVH v10.1 with the Dark-Core 2.4 Kernel (Firmware version: 2.3.3) on my Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000.
I've been using this rom for a year and a half now, but right now it's too laggy and the phone tends to hang or crash from time to time (it did work great in the begining though)..
Battery barely lasts a single day..
I'll be going on a long trip of 8-9 months in a few days, and would like to flash a lightweight rom with a minimal amount of apps (aside from music, WhatsUp, Skype, etc).
I need the phone to be fast and reliable (I'll probably be using the WIFI a lot), and most importantly, the battery to last..
Nothing too flashy.
I've learned from a few posts around here that CM9 roms or SlimBean (I think?) might be valid options, but since I'm short on time and can't test them or other roms - what rom / kernel would you recommend to install?
(remember I won't be able to replace it for another 9 months..)

I think that the best for you could be to flash the elitemovil ROM based on ICS or jb too. Cyanogenmod and slim drain more battery than elitemovil's ROM and that ROM is very very very fast. I use the jb version and it's stable and daily driving. Try this fantastic rom

I thought The I9000 is more suited for GB..?

I have flashed quite a few GB, ICS as well as JB roms and have found INFINITUM-sgs-LBR-v1.1.1-M5 is the best ICS rom that I have ever come across. It's rock solid and has extremely good battery life. Unfortunately, the development of this rom has been discontinued. Having said that, you can search the forum for this rom. Let me know if you don't find it and I'll try to upload it for you.

Though I'm a big jb fan and use it on a daily basis, I am also of the opinion that when push comes to shove, gb is the most stable.
That doesn't mean that you cannot have a rock solid jb rom, but there's more research and reading involved to avoid issues.
Meso, gamerz and saurom are all great gb roms if that is where you think you're going.
Regarding ics and jb, experiences vary so much that one cannot state a logic general argument as to why one is better than the other. Perhaps with the exception of that if you have one of the newer sgs with the faster chip, fishears' cm10 rom is specially built to take advantage of it.

I doubt I have the newer chip, I've had this phone for almost 2 years now..
So I should pick one of those:

I have tried many ROMs but the best performances and battery life are with elitemovil's ROM
Also cm10,cm9 and SlimRoms are more battery drainers than elitemovil 14.1v4

Okay, I think I'll try Meso, sounds like the safest option..
I'm having a bit of trouble with the installation though, the guide says -

1) Darky's version is XXJVO (Baseband) or JVH (Kernel, Build..).

I guess it means I need the newer stock? Where can I get the right version..?
2) Shouldn't I disable all kind of lag-fixes or other sorts of dangerous stuff before I flash the stock?
I remember Darky's guide was preety detailed about that, but there's nothing on that now and I'm afraid to mess up the installation..
3) Is Titanium the way to go when backing up camera pics / message logs / othe personal data which is not the currently installed apps?

I don't have a link right now, but search for ginger bread value pack, it's a bundle floating around here with everything you need for a good base.
Disable lag fixes to be on the safe side.
Yes, tb is the way to go. If you get issues when restoring, enable "follow all symlinks" in troubleshooting options. My backup root is also an alternative.

Hi there
I am fairly newish to rooting etc and have spent the last week trawling the P1000 forums to try and understand it all.
I would like to take my P1000 GSM TAB from my stock GB2.3.3 to JB4.x and from what i have seen although the CM9 is stable I am tempted to go for the CM10 nightly install. (Do they differ greatly? not sureeven after reading the forums)
I am not sure how much such an install would differ from the tweaked CM10 versions I also see on this dev forum from the likes of Erezax (Sapir), Cdesai and Alroger etc. Only in minor ways i suppose with the possibility of further undiscovered bugs.
So from what i can gather, the method would be similar to that laid down in the Overcome installation pdf.
My question though is do i need to go the whole hog and install the overcome kernal/rom prior to installing the CM10 or can i just go as far as installing the stock GBStockSafev5 (which i want to do just in case, even though i have a stock ver of GB already) and then do a wipe install of CM10?
I ask because i read that it was even safer to go from an overcome rom with GB to CM10, as opposed to going from stock GB to CM10. Is there any truth in this would u know.?

No direct way from stock to cm10 because stock recovery doesn't flash non Samsung made zip.
