Win Phone 8 music player is awful! - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a Lumia 920 and I absolutely hate the music players they have on it. The Nokia app is only a little better than the stock Xbox music app. For one thing, you can't specify where to look for your music, so it adds any MP3 file on the phone to your music list, which makes doing shuffle a pain. And for some reason, it is impossible to get a playlist on the phone unless all the songs are in the same folder. Anyone know a decent music player, or at least a way to get a good playlist on the phone? I tried using Mediaplayer from the pc and no luck.
Thanks for any help!

yeah and i cannot see all songs now playing (album tracks), only one. I cannot see how many songs in album remains and cannot select another. It sucks
I have found really nice alternative music player. It is simple, but usefull: Album flow

Disagree totally. On my Nokia Lumia the player is pretty nice, does what it's supposed to. Has an equalizer with presets and manual, suggests Nokia MixRadio channels where locally played music can be found (great to find other good music) and shows background images of the playing band from the net. It's actually a very nice player.

Just if you compare it to a stone. if you compare it to a decent music player it sucks. but in regards of your other postings i sense you dont care about the rest anyways

I ended up dumping my 920 and going back to Android on a Samsung S3, and much happier now. Not just for the music player (though PowerAmp is awesome!), but for the horrendous lack of basic features. Too bad, I really wanted to like my Windows phone.

I also don't care for the music player apps available on the Lumia 920. I keep hoping for a Rockbox port - mostly because it supports all the codecs I have.

Great alternative for music player on wp

I play mostly local music stored on my phone. And for those uses musictastic is by far the best player I have found. Its free, reads playlists I create on my desktop from windows media player, looks great, shuffle fun too works as it should, and displays album art correctly. Definetly worth a try.

Audio player recommendations

Hi,
I tried using Windows Media player to play songs but they do not support copy right m4a files and other misc audio formats. Thus i used TCPMP player which is good to solve the problem but it does not have a SEARCH function.. any advice and other takes on other audio players?
Audio Manager is good. Works when display is off.
S2P or Slide 2 Play is the best one.
Audio manager is good but you can't specify a single folder to use, it will automatically scan for all mp3 and sometimes other audio files on the mem card. I it wasn't for that I would say Audio Manager.
I tested S2P but it does not have the SEARCH function, it doesn't even support playlist function... but its interface is very nice... any more better audio players out there?
I use Mortplayer and I also tried GSPlayer earlier on (both shouldn't be hard to find).
DUDE, this is a phone not an mp3 or a qps device. You don't need to play audio..
tcPiMP gets my vote.
Mort Player
Mort player is my favorite!
It has it all - great for Audio books too!
Get it here:
Stable version
Beta version
Vista Skin

Enjoy!

so any recommendation to play videos??

pop music is best one

are you kidding me? why do people like you always chime in like this w/ irrelevant replies
"i dont use my phone for this, so i think its dumb that anyone else uses its for (blank) purpose"
if you forgot, there are phones like the iphone, sony ericson music phones, nokia n series, etc that are great multipurpose phones...which is EXACTLY what the kaiser is. if you're gonna stick w/ that ideology why don't you stick to a nokia 3395.
PocketMusic Rocks
For me this is a serious bit of kit. It's my phone, GPS, personal organizer and now an MP3 player in the car. That was made possible with PocketMusic - http://www.pocketmind.com/pmfp.htm
Get the full version otherwise the real benefits are not seen.

[Q] How to play .mp4 audio files (iTunes)

I have converted from an iPhone to the HTC Fuze. I still have some audio files that are .mp4. I am interesting in playing audio more than video. Can I get the stock player to play these?
If not, what is the best player to download (for free) for playing audio .mp4 files?
Thanks
If they are DRMed, you'll have to search on how to un-DRM them (I wouldn't ask about that here though). If they are not DRMed, you can play them in Windows Media Player.
I know about the DRM thing, but last time I checked, Windows Media does not play mp4. Am I wrong?
With regard to audio files from iTunes (m4a/AAC/mp4 or whatever you want to call them), they will play just fine via the music player interface in Touch Flo 3d. The only problem I've encountered is that for some reason the audio manager will not sort songs in track order. As yet I have not found a fix for this (and no one else seems to be asking about it either). Still, at least I didn't have to convert my iTunes library into MP3 files ; )
Purchased tracks will not play (in fact they will not even be visible).
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a coding/decoding algorithm mainly used by iTunes to protect the artist and to ensure that the artist gets money for his work since you as a consumer ay have purchased a song or album online. All your own CD's which you may have read-in (ripped) through iTunes will play without any problems.
DRM files, though they appear as MP4 files, cannot be played without the appropriate decoder (iTunes for example).
Ways and methods HOW to bypass this mechanism MUST NOT be discussed here in the forum, do a google research if you interested in.
BTW same issues may happen if you go from iPhone to iPhone or transfer files from PC to PC even if you backed up your iTunes license.
You may bear an Apple store a visit or call Apples cust. support they can provide you with a special key that you do not have to purchase all your songs again.

Track sorting seems to be a general problem of the TF3D player. If you for example have an album which contains two CDs the TF3D player is not able to sort it correctly. It's stupidly sorting:
Track 1 CD1
Track 1 CD2
Track 2 CD1
Track 2 CD2
[...]
Therefore I'm using Pocket Player instead.

Is there a way to launch Pocket Player from TF3D in place of the in-unit player?? I have been searching for an answer for a week here and found not a clue. Any help with this would be appreciated, otherwise I will just launch from programs as I am now doing, but it seems a waste to have a nice tab wasted!

No, I don't think so. Unfortunately the only think you can do is completely disabling the TF3D player by removing it with AdvancedConfig.
I wonder if it's possible to at least get the Audio Manager to play tracks according to file name. At least that way if tracks were numbered 01, 02 etc that would get around the problem of it not seeing the track number in the tag.
Trouble is I can't work out how to do this.... I've been rumaging in the registry under HKLM\software\HTC\AudioManager_Eng but there doesn't seem anything obvious to me. Maybe a key could be added? Anyone got any ideas?
How about mp4 video?
It took 20 minutes to load a video mp4 file onto my microsd card, but it's there. Windows Media Player won't recognize it. The video player app portion of the camera will actually play the file, but it takes several seconds to launch and is generally choppy after that. It's a shame, too, because the video quality is great ... it's just very choppy.
Is there Windows Mobile player out there somewhere that plays these mp4 files SMOOTHLY? I knew the Tilt had issues with the driver not playing video smoothly, but I didn't think it was a problem with the Fuze. Sure would like to watch some quality video in mp4 mode on my Fuze rather than my video ipod.
I love this forum, alot of smart people here (usually).
To talk of disabling software or this drm would be wrong. But Itunes itself posesses a way for you to back up your music. Its totally legit, and a common problem out there. (itunes not playing on winmo or other devices).
So if its a totally legit way of using the itunes program itself, to simply create a backup of your songs... why is it so horrible to discuss?
No one is suggesting hacking or disabling the drm, simply getting the music they paid for to work.

We need a better mp3 player for android

I use my phone as a mp3 player alot but the software that came with android is very limited and does not give you enought options to use our phone as a fully funcional mp3 player. Like for example creating playlist, search songs by name or artist with the keyboard. etc.
I hope some developer is working on a better player...
You can do all of that you mentioned already. To add to a playlist long-press on a song and choose add to playlist and you can make a new one or add to an existing one. To search just slide out the keyboard and type it will return all results for artist, song, album, everything. Hope this helps

thanks you right about everything. I just found something else I have every album in separate folders let say I would like to select just one folder to play that album only, is there any way to do that, because as far as I see the player looks for all the music files in the sd card and display them in the library together.
thanks
I don't think you can organize by folder but maybe try clicking album on the home page of the MP3 app? That will read all the ID3 tags of the MP3's and sort them by album to play. Unfortunately what sucks for me is a lot of my music files are .m4a from my iPhone which the G1 can play but I don't have album art or tags or anything and it blows because you can't add tags to them and I don't have the time to convert them to mp3. Oh well, hope this helps you!
i think we will see a lot more once paid apps come- coreplayer are working on an android version for one.
I just figure another issue, I create a folder with ringtones .mp3s and the player put them on the play list to This is crazy it should at least ask you if u want to add the new audio files to the play list. now I have 10sec ringtones playing on my playlist
I'll pay for a player with all the features that an audio player should have.
What folder are you putting your ringtones in?
I have my ringtones in a folder named 'ringtones', my notifications in a folder called 'notifications' and the media player doesn't pick any of them up.
One thing for sure, Shuffle blows for some odd reason. It's always the same damn order! The only way to get something different is to Shuffle -> Party Shuffle. This needs to be fixed.
Also, it would be nice if they added the fast search (like in contacts, dragging letters on the right) to the song list, as well as speed it up quite a bit.
I'm not impressed with the MP3 player. I'm hoping someone is working on one that is a little bit more iPhonish, as I like the looks/usability of that. S2P for WindowsMobile nailed it.
Is there something wrong with tunewiki? maybe that is more to your liking?
I like the double click headset to change tracks, single click to pause/resume. Although i'm not sure if this functionality would exist with A2DP? It could do with a few more features i'll admit, but it looks fine to me.
Need an Eqaulizer

Samsung Galaxy 4.0 Android MP3 Player.
Samsung calls this an MP3 player, but it is really a great Android phone -- without the phone. The form factor is great for carrying around. I find I'm using it much more than my iPad to access email, listen to podcasts, watch videos, and more. The Gingerbread Android OS is snappy and easy to use. With Skype and Wifi, you get voice/video connectivity.
Samsung Galaxy Player 50
Agreed. The stock app never allows me to view my playlist like the iPod does.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA
Check out MKZIplayer.
Great for video and music
If you use a custom rom you can download "PlayerPro". Best MP3 Player.
(Or try "Apollo", its included in Cyanogenmod from FreeXperia)

Audio Player??

Is there any Developer working in a new audio player, with a lot of new features including just play songs from the folder you select.
I use my g1 on my car alot and the stock audio players sucks!
for example I can't play songs from a specific folder, the player takes all the songs from the g1 sdcard. the shuffle option don't work right I have about 1500 songs and it playes the sames songs when on shuffle etc.
I'm desperate for a new audio players with good features, specific to use the g1 as a real mp3 player, and for car mp3 play use.
TuneWiki perhaps?
^^^ I hate tune wiki. It never displays the right album artwork.
Hey there! Not trying to hijack your thread, but I got a quick question...I noticed that you said you use your G1 in the car. I have Ford Sync and I have heard the music/navigation broadcast over the speakers, but only when I was actually on a call. How are you connecting? Bluetooth doesn't work and I've also tried using the usb cable.
I also second your "request" for a new music player. The G1 is lacking in the music/video department. My boyfried has an iPhone and I just can't argue when it comes to the media part of the phone...my only argument is having to use iTunes.
Perrosky, have you tried aPlayer?
I'll agree with you on those points. I have a lot of poorly-tagged music and just being able to browse by folder/file would be helpful. Shuffling a folder would be nice as well.
I ended up creating a ton of playlists to accomplish this with the current players. Tunewiki is a step up from the bundled player, but it is still quite lacking.
Some other features I'd like to see:
1. Audio controls like EQ, Balance, etc.
2. Bookmarking. If I'm 15 minutes into a 30 minute audiobook track I'd really prefer to not have to remember where I left off when I start listening again.
I'm sure it is only a matter of time before somebody ports an open source audio player to Android. If they can do it for Rockbox, they can do it for android...

Funny it does for me. Best player out there right now. Coreplayer should be coming out with one soon for android.

AMEN! I Have been searching for a media player that could do that.
That is the ONLY thing I miss about my windows mobile phone is the windows media player!
I hope coreplayer can do this. Almost 80% of my songs are poorly tagged (ID3) and being able to play an entire folder would be perfect!

Music Player with Genre support?

I'm relatively new to the scene, but loving my Nexus One. Unfortunately, there's one thing that I am having trouble finding - a music player app that lets me browse by genre tags.
I use MediaMonkey to organize my music collection and sync it over to my N1 - this works awesome. However, when I listen to my music, I listen like you would an FM radio, i.e. 'I'm in the mood for Country music', rather than a specific artist or album. Annoyingly, I have yet to find a music player that lets me do this.
Has anyone found one? I know the HTC Sense UI music player lets you browse by genre, but I really don't feel like junking up my N1 just to get this small feature.
Not really a solutions, but what I did was create playlists for each genre I have. Then I can just use random shuffle on said playlist that I am in the mood for.
Mixzing........
Check out Meridian player. You can play by Genre in that app.
