WCDMA problem - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having this issue with WCDMA in which it constantly drops to 0 signal bars from full signal, and sometimes I even get disconnected from the network until it decides to jump to full bars again. This happens on all locations, ROM is stock XXLSC deodexed (got it from the user I9000 here in the General section) and the problem just keeps repeating itself. Signal drops completely, then jumps back to full, then fully drops again after a short period..it's extremely annoying since I can only use the slow GSM network, which is useless to me when I need fast internet. I called the network operator and they say they had zero reports on an issue similar to mine, so it's not them.

Maybe you should try another "modem" file or test another real stock Rom.
XXLSC isn't a stock Rom - it's based on the XXLSA leak from sammobile.com with the two OTA updates I got on my device. So it has bugs and you should see it as early beta.

after upgrading to JB i used to have similar issue.. loss of signal.. call quality issue.. i changed the modem to one for my location and it has improved a lot. You could try that too

My phone was recently in the repair shop because its usb port was busted up. Ever since I've got my phone back, I have this issue and the technician guys are baffled about what it could be. They just changed the connector and nothing else, I don't see how that can cause any issues with the reception. It keeps loosing signal every few minutes, only to jump back to full bars.

I'll just switch back to stock 4.0.4 and see if it helps, but I'm still quite sure that my phone worked fine with XXLSC leak for a long time.

Update on the situation......I gave the phone to the official Samsung service shop, they tried everything, from changing software to cleaning/changing antennae connectors, and nothing fixes the problem. Most likely I'll have to get the motherboard switched, which costs about 210 euros. Pissed beyond belief right now, would rather just throw the phone away.

[Q] Note dropping data connection despite strong signal

Hey guys,
My GNote is misbehaving since I bought it. The data connection drops randomly despite the device having strong signal. It would jump from H+ to H or 3G, sometimes drop to G. Whenever this happens, the connection dropx and I get disconnected from all services. The signal, however, remain strong (full bars). Wifi connection is stable and has no issues.
My previous device was a HTC Desire, and didn't have this problem. Logically, it means that the problem is with the Note. I assume that a possible fix is a radio update (current firmware version is LB1, GNote from Germany - I live in the UK, central London).
I couldn't find any information regarding radio (there was one thread that listed them all, but I don't want to root the phone and didn't know what version to choose). Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ben
i always have the same issue but still no solution
No ideas, anyone?
none is helping us
Mine was doing the same thing so i went back to XXLA4 modem and that fixed it. Hope this helps!

When I was using the SGS2 most people had similar problem and samsung is aware of it, there was some technical explanation about it also in the SGS2 thread..temporary solution is to disable the hsdpa mode or something like that using the samung secret code..anyway I went back to xxla4 modem which does not have this problem.
Hope this help.

[Q] S III mini network issue

Hi guys,
I own an i8190, baseband : I8190XXALJL and I encounter frequent network outage.
Although the signal strenght indicator shows 3-4 bars, I cannot be called, cannot call and data is not being fetched.
On battery usage app, the network is most of the time "green".
On any other phone around me (blackberries, iphones, SGS II and III), and on the same network the problem does not reproduce.
If I turn the phone to airplane mode, and then back on, I am able to call, send mails so on and so forth.
Does any of you have the same problem ?
If any of you updated to I8190XXALL2, is this problem still persisting ?
Should I send it to the service ?
I'm currently running the ALL2 baseband, but previously had both the ALJL and the ALK6 ones and didn't encounter any such issue...
Before sending it back you could try with a different SIM card, maybe yours is acting up (it sometimes happens, especially with old SIMs).
Seeing how nobody complained of a similar issue though, I don't think that changing your baseband will have an impact, but if you'd like to give it a try you can download original firmwares (that contain the baseband) from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/. In order to install them, just follow the steps in the root thread.
Will do so. I'm going to pit-stop my SIM card @ Vodafone and let you know about it.
It's strange that this happens only deep inside buildings (eg. offices, malls, etc..).
When this happens, usually the data activity indicator disappears OR the S3 mini is using 3G frequencies (not H, not G, but 3G)
Just changed my sim card and the issue still persists...
It's driving me nuts. My feeling is that the S3 mini doesn't lock on a network cell when 2 are available with similar coverage.
Will upgrade to the latest build and let you know about it :banghead:

And now the handset runs XXALL2 from vodafone uk.
I'm curious if the phone will have that network issue furthermore.

So far there's no difference. Where I live the network coverage is pretty bad, but it doesn't "disconnect in the background".
Only at the office I can test it out for sure or inside massive buildings.
ci6i, go ahead and update; install kies (for drivers only ), get odin3 1.87 and flash it with XALL2 from samfirmware.
Lately I see there is XALL3 available for some asian countries.
I still think that my BlackBerry 9810 is a tank. unfortunately vodafone romania doesn't sync emails two ways via BIS so... :crying: I had to get back to samsungs...
Well, i understand to lose signal if network coverage is bad, but my phone gets "network stuck" in the middle of town. I noticed this few times: at job, the phone stands on the table near me, and i receive sms about missed calls (i have voice calls diverted to voice mail when unreachable). If i try to call or browse the net at this moment, it's impossible until i set airplane mode on then off. All this time, the phone shows full network signal and HSPA data connection.
I'll try to change the firmware after hollidays.
As mentioned above, try to change firmwares (to XXALL2), I've also noticed some network drops when I'm at home (however this is expected in my case), but when I installed this firmware, I noticed some signal gain (full on 2G and +1-2bars on 3G signal).
Hi again.
The same issue even on xall2
Just happened again today in a crowded place.
It goes to "3G" from "H" and then it's gone off the network.
Will try with XALL3 although there is a small improvement concerning "sticking to the network carrier". It seems it'a hard job to get a call when in coverage area...
If still no success, I'll loose my patience with this Sammy...
See ya!

You get SMS because they use a dedicated network bandwidth for this technology and apparently the S3 mini does not loose connection on this communixation channel.
It appears that S3 mini is dropping voice and data, but not sms and CB (cell broadcast).

Hi bogdangr,
I have the same problem with my SIII mini. From time to time, after working normally, it loses the H or 3G symbol and shows about two or three signal bars, but if I try to make a call or receive one the operation fails miserably. The airplane mode trick doesn't work for me, and I have to reboot the phone to get it working again.
I've updated to the latest official firmware, but the problem is still there. Have you found a solution for this or anybody has more ideas of things to try?
Thanks you all,
MFC
I'm on VF RO, too.
Crappy phone, what can I say.
If it can't follow a network where there is sufficient coverage...

Hi Miguel,
The only workaround for this issue (at least for me) is to keep it in GSM mode (no "AUTO mode", no "WCDMA only").
So the crappy phone won't have to switch frequencies and I can get phone calls (I start considering a luck when the phone rings...)
I'm on 4.1.2 now baseband I8190DXALL3 (latest on samfirmware) and still the same.
You just don't want to know how's everything downloading limted to GPRS
BR,
Bogdan
Does anyone know what's that *# code that enables service / engineering mode ?
I want to select on which network frequencies is the phone allowed to work.
I want to disable 3G mode and leave GPRS, EDGE, and HS(D)PA only.
The reason is that when the issue appears, S3 mini switches from "H to 3G" and "G to 3G" and then it's gone;
Although there are moments when it can fetch data with network on 3G coverage without problems...
The code is *#*#info#*#* but it doesn't work .
I don't think it's a good ideea to disable those settings. Maybe it's a temporarily problem and i know Vodafone is testing/launching 4G coverage.
For me, this network issue is happening once in a week. How often do you lose phone signal ?

I found out the service code but the RF setup is not "sufforted".
Vodafone has implemeted already 4G in selected areas but it's not about that. On blackberry, iphone and nokia this is not happening.
As a frequency... 3-5 times a day while I'm at the office.

Network coverage

It says on my Cell info that I didnt had signal for like 50-90% everyday...is this a bug or ?? and this consumes like 7% of my battery..but the wierd thing is that my phone /internet connections works everytime .
I've got the same since 4.2.2
so i have 4 friends with sony xperia Z all of them have this problem ... maybe this is a BUG?
Go into network mode and make sure it not got 4g on because that's one of the reason I loose signal but 4g turns back on when I restart device or change SIM I had no network on my s3 due to SIM card

I turned of 4G in network settings. Still same problem. Even after flashing ftf file same problem.
On 4.1.2 never had this issue. Always 0% time without signal.
I can't reproduce this "bug".
I have a percentage of 38% w/o cell network, but it's Because i drive to work everyday and there are many places w/o cell network on the way.
I'm using .244 Based Monxdified Rom.

I'm on 3 (for those of you who haven't heard of them, they are the worst network ever in the UK) and I don't have a signal for between 95 to 100% of the day. Yeh, sucks right.

[Q] Cell reception indicator constantly flips between "no reception" display and bars

[Q] Cell reception indicator constantly flips between "no reception" display and bars
I'm using the Xperia Z3 Compact on TMobile's network in the US.
About 1/4 of the time when I turn on the display the phone indicates that it has no cell reception:
1) The phone shows no bars of reception, and a red X over the bars
2) The lock screen reads "Emergency calls only"
However, within a second or two the phone appears to acquire an excellent signal and I get a full 3-4 bar display. All of the areas in which I use the phone are marked as "Excellent" on TMobile's coverage maps.
This also happens intermittently while I'm using the phone. I'm not sure if it's actually losing the signal or if it's just a software issue. I've never had it drop a call or cut out while I'm talking.
I'm getting only acceptable battery life from the phone (about 25% at the end of the day) despite light usage and conservative app installation, even though this phone has a reputation for excellent battery life. My theory is that this might have to do with the phone constantly disconnecting from the network and then having to re-aquire a signal.
Anyone else had this experience with the Z3C?
Hey mate.. I posted the exact same issue a couple of months back. I was experiencing this exact same issue.
I've had my LTE disabled for about a month now and haven't had a single drop.
Not sure if LTE is a dealbreaker but since my device is a business line, I can "suffer" with better battery life and slower internet if I'm not dropping calls. I've considered trying a ROM with updated radio firmware but figured I'd wait to see what the current Lollipop update does ('ll re-enable LTE once I install it and see if it repeats the same behavior) for my phone before trying a 3rd party system.
Hope this helps

Thanks! Really gratifying to know that it's not just my device. Seems like there's a strong possibility this is the issue since I'm on a MVNO that's only been on this LTE network a few months. I've flipped the device into GSM only mode and we'll see if it helps.

I'm having the same issue as you have described. For now I've set the phone to 3G prefered. Looks instantly better. Signal strength is also better.
Provider: Simyo (KPN network) - The Netherlands
Edit - Issue solved:
I switched from the Lollipop Baltic ROM to the Lollipop KPN carrier ROM for The Netherlands. The switching is gone for me. Battery life drastically went up.
Any update on this? I just started experiencing this issue out of no where about 2 weeks ago. I'm not rooted or anything, can't afford to due to job security requirements and such.

Data issue...

I've been having this really annoying issue where all of a sudden I just wont get a data connection even though there is a strong 4g signal. Any app that uses the internet will say there is a connection error, it just completely stops. I've been getting around it by having to turn on airplane mode and then turning it off. After I do that, everything starts connecting again, but it is insanely annoying. It seems to be getting more persistent, which is why I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing and if so, how did you fix it?
Thank you.
Oh and just in case, I'm running completely stock non rooted.
I've had the same problem the past few days. Don't know why & it happens fairly randomly. Only way to get around it is to connect to WiFi or turn data off/on.

Having the same issue here in Atlanta was told it should be sorted out by today. I'm also using lollipop stock but rooted. I have the same problem. I had it on my s5 too
T-mobile
from what i heard t mobile was doing some cleaning up of files or upgrades i called them since i was getting 3g.
I too have been seeing the same data issue. It could just be coincidental timing but within days of loading LP I started having the issue. Even flashed the ROM again in case it was a bad flash.
As stated in OP I toggle airplane mode to fix. Annoying for sure.
PopRocks v5
T-Mobile
Bump.
I have been having this issue too ever since upgrading to Lollipop. I've had it on 2 versions of Poprocks and I now it have while using Rapture. Extremely annoying.
I got around it by rebooting the phone. I did not think of airplane mode or data on/off, i'll give that a shot. I was actually thinking maybe it's an APN issue, but no one in here mentioned that. For what it's worth I live in Southern California.
This issue is really starting to annoy me. One thing I do with my phone is stream music while I'm driving, and now I'm having all kinds of issues once my phone drops off wifi & has to switch to data. My music just stops playing & I have to toggle airplane mode to fix the issue, which isn't fun/easy while driving. Plus, when I do that my phone doesn't reconnect to my car's bluetooth. Ugh! I sure hope this gets fixed soon.
As an update, months later and I still have data drops all the time. Really annoying and it has definitely soured me on the Note 4. First with the GPS issue I was having (that was only fixed after getting a replacement) and now this data issue.
They only doing this too trick us into getting the note 5.

After reading the new info on the Note 5, I'm not all that impressed. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a good device, but I wasn't really impressed with the changes. I'm sure it'll still be a great phone, but I don't know if I'm willing to risk another year of the data issue. I may go with the new Nexus this year.
I've had this problem (5 bars, but can't even ping 8.8.8.8... but if I toggle data off & on, I instantly connect & usually get fast transfers) all the time (Fort Lauderdale area) for months, but it seems to have been particularly bad for the past few weeks.
Is this T-Mobile's fault? Or do Note 4s on other carriers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc) have the same problem?
My theory:
* The number of bars is determined mostly by the signal strength of the nearest tower
* The phone doesn't necessarily use the same tower for data that it uses for voice & SMS (in fact, when it's using HSPA+, it HAS to be simultaneously connected to two different towers).
* The modem firmware resists changing towers when there's an active data session unless it totally and completely loses sight of the tower it's currently using for data. I'm not sure whether it's the fault of Android or GSM network design, but data hand-offs seem to be "hard" rather than "soft", and always involve a connectivity break of at least a few seconds before the new one gets established.
* Thus, you can get into a situation (say, by driving a half mile or so) where the phone establishes a data connection with one tower, you drive *just* far enough away that it can still hear the original tower -- but can't actually complete a transmission without unrecoverable errors -- but voice & SMS messages go through the nearby tower. When you toggle data, it breaks the old data session, and establishes the new one from the strong nearby tower.
One thing that appears to have changed (in South Florida, at least) over the past few months: I always had problems with losing data connections while driving unless I disabled LTE, but NOW it appears to be doing the same thing even when GSM/WCDMA only is selected instead of GSM/WCDMA/LTE. It's like they figured out what was making LTE dysfunctional, then went out of their way to make HSPA equally dysfunctional.
