Nexus 4 is super weak. - Nexus 4 General

I own 4 nexus 4's two are replacement orders that I kept from google. If you squeeze in the bottom left corner it creaks and sounds broken. Pretty much all along the bottom if you squeeze it creaks. Now I don't have the time to order 4 replacements like some of you I just chalk it up to this being a nice cheap phone.
Never have I owned a phone so fragile and prone to scratches. If you use this without a front and back screen protector and a case your nuts. Maybe you like living life on the edge I don't know. This glass is whatever it is (not gorilla) it just sucks. LG we are not impressed and nobody wants your phones just stop it.
When I got my first two I was afraid to even take it outside without a case I mean what if a grain of sand was in my pocket and caused a scratch could not risk it. So I used it in the house only still got scratched maybe I left the AC on I don't know.
Now before you close my thread hear me out I'm not trolling I bought four of these and I like it mostly. Now I know why i don't want a 350 dollar phone that will break. Google got me with the nexus 7 that way and that cracked on carpet I swear to god. GOOGLE PLEASE STOP MAKING CHEAP PREMIUM PRODUCTS. I went through more than I have ever for a phone to get 4 of these.
And last the LCD is not good, yeah sure its ok but amoled any day over this. Colors are washed even after adjustment, custom kernel and a 5 dollar app. Viewing angles, stop it. Of all top phones this is the worst to me. IPhone and HTC one x way better oh and s3 too. LCD hurts my eyes for some unknown reason, was actually happy my screen protector blurred the screen a little.
Not trolling this is how I feel, I think the iPhone 5 is a beautiful and superior quality phone. I don't care for iOS all I want is somebody on stock android to do the same. So far it has never happened and I have been waiting years. So far galaxy nexus was best attempt just the hardware specs were kinda sub par.

I don't have a problem at all using it without a case and the screen protectors I use have no scratches on them. That means that if you are careful you won't have to worry about anything. I understand that the sand in your pockets might be a problem and the solution to that would be to clean them before you use them.

ive experienced the nexus 4 to be quite solid. dropped the phone 3 times on the ground (asphalt) and the only damage it took was to the frontcase on the screen.. the glass back and front was undamaged

Your phone probably already has a ton on little scratches on it I don't believe how your phone could be flawless. And what's worse when you crack it and you most likely will the cost to replace the screen is retarded. An iPhone is only a 30 bucks to replace the digitizer. Not only that when you crack this one the whole screen stops working.
My gal nex dropped many times and screen is flawless. I'm not buying people telling me this is gorilla glass I don't believe it.

what's the point in this thread? its based on how you feel which sounds like you are going to troll.
why buy 4 nexus phones knowing you weren't going to be happy?
you claim iphone5 is better, that's your preference.
why state iphone5 is better when we don't care what you think, let users think for themselves,
you obviously not satisfied with the nexus experience so go somewhere you feel comfortable in.
my nexus 4 is mint, great screen and its worth it,

Valuable opinion, but this thread has to be closed.

Glass not the best for phones = cracked my N4

The Nexus 4 was my first partially glass constructed phone, and my last. I have had many Samsung and HTC Android phones drop, bounce, skip across the floor, and they worked like a champ still. Typically battery cover pops off, and battery falls out, but put back together, and all good again
Not so with my Nexus 4, and I LOVED this phone, but was in the washroom, set it down for one second, to wash my hands, and I slipped pushing the phone off the top of toilet, and it hit the tile floor, OH SH!T NO, picked up, and yep, huge spider web cracked screen I see phone calls and texts coming in, but can press anything, no reaction.
Luckily I still had my old white color, international HTC One X, running CM10, which I like too, but it's no Nexus 4.
But damn, that glass phone is super fragile. Not the best materials to make a phone of. Out of like 8 Android phones, over last 4 years, this was my first one that actually broken and cracked, being unusable.
I heard such incidents. I have order for a protective case. Hope I dont do the same thing before it comes
I advise all Nexus 4 users to handle this phone with CARE and protect it.

I seen some fall and not break and seen them crack like yours after falling. Just depends. I seen one drop test for the Nexus 4 get dropped 3 times I believe it was before the screen cracked.
Glass or not I don't like scratches let alone cracks. So I put all my devices in cases to protect them. I like devices without cases but I like my devices looking and working perfect more. Even my aluminum devices.

Did you at least have a bumper or screen protector on or was it naked?
Don't all half decent smart phones have glass screens? Im pretty sure nexus 4 isn't alone in that department.
Yeah, the same problem occurred with the iPhone 4 and 4S. They all easily cracked.
Well until the guys from star trek come back from the future to save a few whales and give us that clear aluminum you need to learn not to drop your glass faced phones..... .. ..
This has happened to quite a few people, and has been discussed on XDA a fair bit

How is your Nexus 4 holding after 6+ months?

So, it's been over 6 months since the Nexus 4 was released. How is yours holding up?
I must say that I am still loving mine (although I have recently ordered an Oppo Find 5 ) and it still looks brand new! No scratches or cracks and I use no screen protector or case, other than the OEM bumper. It is in my pocket on my carpenters jeans all day. I have dropped it a few times and still no damage. I have unlocked and rooted and have been running Paranoid for the last couple of months. Awesome ROM!
Same here. No protector or bumper and it's nearly scratch-free. There's a single tiny micro-scratch I noticed, visible at a certain angle under the right lighting.
It survived a 6 feet drop on concrete. Still no root or custom ROM, but I'll do it eventually.
What's an Oppo Take 5?
Loads of scratches on the back .. Few on the front... Still holding up well though
Paranoid android 3

Mine dropped from the fire place and only has a tiny dink on the chrome. A couple light scratches on the back only visible at a angle. Still working perfectly well.
I have a wet screen protector on the front and back along with a TPU case, making the phone still looking new as when I got it. Received phone November 20th.
The chrome is all scuffed up, but besides that everything else is perfect.
I almost don't take off my case and it's scratched, the scratch is thinner than a hair strand tho. The camera is choppy but I'm satisfied with it... the focus rarely makes a strange sound and when it does, the camera app crashes... I wish I had more options to tweak in camera settings. That's all the complaints I have
Power button dieing soon. Very very not responsive already. Have to use my finger nails to push down the button to click...
Other than that. No scratches due to screen protector on the front and back
I got it at Dec 2012 anyway...
I think youre talking about the Oppo find 5, its a decent high end smartphone, that isnt crazy expensive, 1080p, quad core 1.5ghz $500, fastest phone until the One and GS4 came out
I'm one of the few people who got it first and i've had it in a cheap case after about a month. Now' its still look brand new. No scratches anywhere.

yea but the nexus 4 isnt optimized or something, and lags in heavy games
My Nexus 4 is still holding up well. I got it from a guy who ordered it from Google, cause they were all sold out, around January.
I have scratching on the greyish bezel near the volume rocker, but everything else is great. Been using chameleon launcher because I got bored of the vanilla android.
Anyone else 100% satisfied? The battery life is possibly my biggest gripe. Lasts a full day, but not any longer.

n using it since last Christmas. Small dent on the rubberish part on top and hairline scratches on the chrome outline. Both are caused by the hard cover not covering the top and bottom.

mine looks like new front to back but i've only had it for 4 months and i bought a slip over rubber case like this one

so the back is protected and it also solves the slides around on smooth surfaces issues with the glass back issue
December unit. Still the same as when I brought it out of the box. Just the official bumper and spigen films. Still works great
Its as good as gold! initial release in November.
Got it in november. I have nicks on the bezel & back glass is cracked. Power button is shoddy, too. I still love it.

After a few hours with my white nexus 4...

It makes me want to cry... I went straight to the Zagg store and had it done up front and back, I was waiting 24 hours to put the bumper on to allow the screen protector to dry. What are the chances? :crying:

Frankly speaking, you guys can't handle it. I am using my Nexus 4 since the ever first shipment with NO CASE, SCREEN PROTECTOR or anything. I am a pretty normal user and the phone has never fallen from my hand. I wonder whether you guys are just too reckless in the first place.
I had a case on mine first few months I had it but found it bothersome and annoying. It is now going no screen protector or case (as it has been for 5 months) and it is still pristine! Not even micro scratches that you have to hold the phone under the sun to see.
But that would definitely be very... Emotion wrecking.
Should have went with a dry apply protector from SGP.

I baby my black nexus 4, got an oem bumper on it but nothing else. Use to use screen protectors but they just peel, bubble or smudge to much. I am thinking about trying it naked, but sods law will probably come in to play and I will be without a phone then.
I have had my GS3 without a case OR screen protector for 9 months without a single incident. I decide im going to take better care of this phone and then this happens. currently using gs3 again until i receive the repair kit. this is costing me $140 to fix. On the other hand its still cheaper than i paid for my gs3.
I see there are a couple different videos on youtube for replacing the screen. Has anyone had any experience with replacing screens? if so, which tutorial/video did you find most helpful?
edit: the phone being black on the front is a blessing in disguise when you go to order replacement parts the week the phone launches lol
Ouch, I feel for you, pictures like this make me realise I should buy a case :/

I cracked my naked N4 I received just before christmas after about 4 months exactly like the OP and I nearly cried. Fortunately got a replacement through my insurance and got a poetic bumper for it. No more risks as I dont think I can handle that trauma again!

Be careful my friend. In my experience you now have the attention of all the bad spirits out there.
I don't hope so, but I wouldn't wonder if your phone falls down and cracks in the next few days. Waiting for the update....
I never bother with wet application skins exactly because I don't want to wait for 24 hours to use my phone while the dry ones can provide the same, if not better, protection.

The only reason i go with Zagg is the warranty. As soon as my replacement parts arrive next week im going to fix my phone and then ill peel the zagg off the shattered glass and have them reapply a new one. Its within 14 days so technically they shouldnt even charge me the installation fee again lol.
Do your self a favor homez!!! Ballistic case and Dbrand skin your glass you'll be glad u did I had my N4 for 2 weeks b4 I even switched to a micro sim just waiting for a case and skin and even then I'm still very careful to not have change in my pocket or drive with it in my lap or nothing No chances with this Black Beauty!

cracked screen

that was fast
24 hours, slipped out my hand when bent to tie my show, 2 feet off the ground it landed flat on the ground. Shattered.
I want to blame myself but this wasn't an epic slip, I guess there's a magic spot you dont want to hit if this thing falls but if its that easy I think alot of people are going to be doing the same.
Maybe someone at support is having a good day, doubtful. I can;t buy another one tho if it breaks so easily. I've never actually cracked a screen before.
it looks like a tall iphone now

If that's accurate that isn't too bad! I know when I cracked my Galaxy Nexus screen last year I just called Google and they sent me a new phone, charged me the full price of the phone, then when I returned my broken one they refunded all but $100. It was a damn good deal in my opinion. You might want to give that a try instead of dealing with LG.
No one to blame but yourself. That sucks though.

Ive only dropped one phone in my life time, htc one x, and the first fall equaled shattered screen =(
I have done the same to gs3, nexus 4, HTC one (yes I am clumsy) they are all as brittle as each other. I just make sure I have insurance!

Ouch. I cracked my Nexus 4 screen 3 times. Sent it o LG every time lol. The last time I sent it, they actually just fixed it for me for free, which was really nice of them.
Anyways, if it really no a $105, this isn't bad. It was around $150 to fix the N4 each time I cracked. The digitizer was literally right on the glass in the Nexus 4, so even the smallest chip could render the entire screen unusable. As was what happened to me.
Nexus 5 has Gorilla Glass 3. I really hope that makes a difference.

Gorilla glass prevents scratching, not cracking.

I got google Nexus support on the phone and went the "come on do me a solid bro" route. The guy at google put me on the phone so I guess he asked someone, but he said he couldn't do anything. I'm on with LG now to find out the price. Maybe try google later and will get lucky.
LG says $40 - $100 depending on extent of damage. LG tech said the digitizer is attached to the screen and very hard to separate. But total turnaround time is 5-7 business days, from time they receive the phone, evaluate repair charges, confirm cost with me and do the work. That's impressive. I could probs sell the thing broken to some of the impatient fanboy nut jobs out there.
Had the nexus 4 for almost a year and dropped it a dozen times from various heights (even shoulder height, and 6' tall) and not crack. Then two weeks ago it fell off my chair about one foot and cracked the bottom of my screen and rendered part of it unresponsive. So it just depends on how it falls. It could fall a hundred times or just once.

Oof, that's too bad! I'm trying very hard to baby mine so far, will be ordering a tempered glass screen protector and a case some time this week. I think the glass screen protector will be enough to prevent a cracked actual screen, so the case is just for situations where I'd want some extra protection (say, hiking, or going to a state fair, etc.). I used a tempered glass screen protector on my Galaxy Nexus for a long time, and it saved my actual screen twice (screen protector cracks, real screen underneath was fine). Best $30 I will ever spend on phone accessories.
Pic or it didn't happen.
I shattered the screen of an iPhone 4S that I dropped down a flight of stairs (on accident?) and ran over an EVO 4G with my car when it slipped out of my pocket getting in. In both incidents neither phone was in a case, and in both I absolutely was to blame. You stay calm and carry on, as the kids say.

You can tell his screen is cracked because his shift key doesn't work anymore.
The plastic they used on Nexus 5 is very very soft. I mean the bezel cannot provide any protection to the screen when it falls on the sides.

Are these as fragile as the thread makes it seem?

I am seeing a lot of screen breaks even with a good case. Is this thing as fragile as it seems from all these posts? I just ordered one.
I have dropped mine twice on a hard floor....once was from over waist high. No issues.
No problems here and the screen also seems very scratch resistant.
Thing you have to remember though is that the bigger the screen is, the easier it will be due to the fact there is more surface area.
But no problems I can report as of yet. 3 months strong...

Just get a small clear case like for instance the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Clear for a few bucks, its better to prevent then to repair
The bigger they are the harder they fall!
But I did drop mine from about chest high on to the kitchen floor and it survived.
