[Q] Start-up Tweaks keep disappearing - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

I'm on Slimbean and trying to do Start-up Tweaks in the Performance section of Settings. I can click and select Enable start-up tweaks and that selection remains if I back out, reboot, whatever. But if I select any of the Customize Tweaks, when I back out or reboot or whatever, those selections disappear. How do I select them and make them stay selected? I'm not missing an APPLY TWEAKS button as far as I can see. Am I doing something wrong?

Start up tweaks don't stick. So no you're not doing anything wrong. Try ROM toolbox.

Hmm. Why don't they stick? And as far as I can tell, ROM toolbox won't do the tasks I need to set using the Settings, POWER, Start-up Tweaks utility. I want to choose, permanently, the following CUSOMIZE TWEAKS
Zipalign apks on each boot
Fix permissions on each boot
Clear cache on each boot
It seems that I should be able to select these changes in SETTINGS, have them stick and last boot after boot without me having to mess with them again. ROM Toolbox doesn't address those three things as far as I can tell. Am I doing something wrong in the SETTINGS, POWER, Start-up Tweaks section, or is this a bug in CM10 or Slimbean?

No, you are not doing anything wrong. They just don't stick after a reboot. I can't tell you why, ask someone else for that.

Hmm. I think this is a bug. Why does each choice say ". . . on each reboot?" The selections are listed as selections that will be carried out "on each reboot." If they don't stick after a reboot, why the heck would the software be teasing me with a falsely labeled choice?

From what I have noticed none of the options under Performance stick. I think Pimp My ROM has similar options though. You can download it from play store and try.

Disable lagfix, it does not work for me.

For some reason, disabling lagfix does not work for me. I am new here and I began about 2 days ago by flashing Assonance v5.0 to my Samsung Captivate. It's really nice and I love it a lot!!!!! But like some of the users who flashed to it, it's kinda using up my battery. So I'm taking up a suggestion to install JL3 Modem + xCal 2.1.1. First though, I must disable lagfix.
I reboot into Clockwork recovery and go through the steps: (advanced SpeedMod ULK features>LAGFIX options>Disable lagfix) Then I reboot, then click Restore with Backup. I have done this about 3 times and it doesn't seem to disable. I am assuming that it will stop displaying "Disable lagfix" once it's disabled and display something like "enable lagfix instead". So maybe it really has been disabled? idk, thanks for the help so far, I've been really impressed! Also, somewhere in the process, I lost all my apps, configuration (accounts, sync), and contacts. But I have those backed up so no worries about data loss.
Here are my old posts in the Assonance thread, but I felt like I was hijakcing it with my "can't disable lagfix" hijinks. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856877&page=204
Sent you a pm. I think it its disabled but you do not realize it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had a felling that was the case. Was just waiting for someone to say, "oh it does that all the time". Well I might try it when I get out of work. What would happen if I flashed the modem thing without disabling it first ...
Worst case you get stock in boot loop and have to flash stock with odin. I do not think out is likely though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well, I flashed both of them and nothing really happened ... it booted as normal. I guess it has been applied? Is there anyway to verify. Otherwise thanks, I guess it was disabled ... just wanted to make sure I suppose.
Look for a folder on your sd that says voodoo.
Go to settings, about phone, baseband. What does it say.
Boot back into recovery. Does it bring you to a blue lettered recovery
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes recovery is blue, there are only four options. I got there by pressing "go to recovery 2e" or something like that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You have the new kernel.
You should still have the update zip from rom manager saved to your sd. If you do not open rom manager and flash clockwork recovery. When in the blue menu select reinstall packages, will have to do this twice, should bring you to green clockwork recovery. You no longer have all of the same options in recovery.
To disable your current lagfix navigate to your voodoo folder on your sd. Create a folder inside named disable-lagfix. Reboot.

Will this change anything? I kinda want to keep xcal and the modem I flashed >_<

Can you upload the zip to xda?
Sent from my Zio using xda premium
I can not since it is to large of a file to upload to xda's .zip attachment system.
It won't let me download, can you dropbox it?
Sent from my Zio using xda premium
Not at the moment but tomorrow I might be able to do so.
Can anyone else download and upload to dropbox so end users can download straight to their Zio?
Sent from my Zio using xda premium
Believe it or not, I just had someone offer me (sum too much to speak of) for my Zio, so I just sold it tonight.
Ironic, eh?
But, the good thing is that I can go get another one since Cricket is still selling them for only ~$50 but I have to wait a few weeks till I actually have enough to get the first month of service (wish I could just buy the phone but, whatever).
Anyway, so while I won't be participating at this precise moment, here's my contribution - the first ROM uploaded to Dropbox as requested. I haven't used my Dropbox account since I created it, so I have no idea how the hell it works to be honest (signed up so a friend got more space or whatever, no idea). I believe this link will get the download for anyone, but I'm not sure about the bandwidth potential and it getting throttled or capped or whatever.
Regardless, here ya go:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19019338/v0.1.zip
Hope to be testing this thing soon but, it'll be a while.
So I've flashed the rom and it has plenty of extra memory, I'm not seeing much difference in ram. Also the cricket mobile web app is not needed since it is only a shortcut to the browser, and since there is no browser you can get rid of it and some of the other cricket stuff.

The cricket's apps appear for you? O.O
On my phone they are not there......
Which one's are still auto-installing themselves onto our phones?
I have a script that can remove those applications from our phones if they are still appearing for some of you.
The ram difference isn't available yet due to my init.d script not working either because of the kernel or my permissions or something else.
This is no where near finished yet

So far my experience with this phone is that the wiping dies not erase anything. So the stock apps will not be gone unless the end user removes them. I installed a custom boot screen over the cricket one and it has never been removed. Even after I restored the stock image it was still there.
I will be installing vbox on my laptop's windows 7 OS later and unpacking the kernel stickied on the forum and the one in open zio to see why init.d scripts aren't working and what are the differences I'll maybe have an updated release of the rom next week....

I noticed that myself, as I can't get the cricket stock apps to re-appear but I have a script for you all to run if you want those apps gone. It wont work though until I figure out this init.d startup script problem. As for your "boot screen" do you mean splash image or boot animation?

the boot animation. before spaz created his rom the only way i could install a different boot animation was to overwrite the stock images with alternate ones for a custom boot experience. I removed all the cricket apps right after I got the phone plus half of the google junk that i dont use.
edit...
hey i just installed your rom. only one small issue you should include some kind of file browser so we wont have to push one onto the system to access our data. also it would be nice if you could add the reboot option like spaz did.
It's because I didn't do a wipe of the data partition. I figured the updater script would do the wiping.

Mattix nope it doesn't wipe the data partition that's why I instructed to do so
As for jlmancuso I have never added a reboot option to the end button long-press options. But I can add a file browser Is ES File Explorer okay? Or would a different one be better?
I use ES file explorer myself. Though any browser of your choosing would be perfectly acceptable. I like the stripped down style. Keep up the good work.
I'd say root explorer but it's a paid app... I can also make a backup of gapps and upload a zip.

As for gapps I already have that ready for the next release but thanks for the offer. My main focus is the init.d script problem which i can't really examine until next week/this weekend maybe. But I'm working on it.

were the force closes due to not having a browser at first boot of the rom? or when you have a browser downloaded from the market does it still force close?

[NOOB GUIDE] Get the most out of Nik's Sensation XL ROM

A little guide for getting the best custom tailored performance in Nik's rom
what do you need:
-an inredible S with nik's rom installed
-Titanium backup pro or Titanium backup free + an app that let's you freeze apk's
-OC/UV beater
-Lord kernel v5
-battery calibration
NOTICE: if you already tinkered with your ROM it will be best to start from scratch
-Boot into recovery, flash Nik's Rom (if you have not already), reboot back into recovery (press volume down when countdown for reboot starts, keep pressing button untill reboot finished), now flash Lord kernel V5 (yes, use lord kernel, not RCmix) and reboot the phone, set it up as usual and install any alternative apps you would like to use (i mean apps already included in rom, but where you prefer others for, ex: SMS,Music,Dialer, etc)
- now install titanium backup, battery calibration and OC/UV beater, after that go to settings/tweaks/rosie options/quick scroll and set to all 2D, then settings/tweaks/display options/autobrightness and set to sloppy, then settings/tweaks/system/enable/disable commands and install virtuous OC deamon, now reboot your phone
-after reboot open oc/uv beater and set wake gov:smartassV2,wake min:122000, wake max:1305600, sleep gov:conservative, sleep min:122000, sleep max:460800. now press 'perm activate', then press the settings key on your phone and goto 'ocsettings', set all options to 'ProfileVOC1', close OC/UV beater and open superuser, press the settings button and choose preferences. set automatic response to allow and untick 'notifications', close app
-now charge up your phone to 100%, open battery calibration and press on the 'battery calibration' button. unplug the phone, and it's important now to leave it unplugged untill the battery hits 20% or lower (best calibration)
-reboot the phone in recovery mode and make a backup
-last thing to do now, open titanium backup pro, go to backup/restore and freeze everything you plan on not using (tap program, then tap 'freeze'), make sure you don't freeze OS critical stuff. there are many lists on what is safe to remove/freeze on sense rom's : example. Do not remove at first, but freeze !!!!!
now run your ROM for a few days, if everything is working as it should go back into titanium backup and uninstall all frozen apps (tick app, then tick uninstall)
If not everything is working as it should, start unfreezing apps that you suspect of being the culprit and test
-after all this, you have a tweaked out rom with great speed, maximum free memory and good battery life !

It's normal that your phone get's a bit hot under high load (43° Celcius is ok for example) If you think its getting too hot, set wake max to 1.2Ghz, not every phone is the same, all depends on the CPU. as long as it does not freeze or reboot, you are pretty much okay
Okay I will try that and tell you..
And for battery calibration I fully charged and clicked the calibration button and it showed calibration is succeeded and I unplugged the device.... Is that correct ? And what now?

Did you install a rom in safestrap mode? That's normally why you would get a black screen as you need something to load.
Nonsafestrap and safestrap modes are a dual boot system.

That is most likely why. You have switched over to the Safe Strap system, but you haven't loaded a ROM to the safe system... so it's trying to boot, but there is simply nothing to boot yet.
I would suggest maverick 3.0

I'm gonna need to try flashing another ROM. I waited to get back on Verizon before flashing cm9 because the xt883 radio was apparently an issue. Now that I'm back on Verizon, I try to flash cm9 to my safe system and no dice...black screen no matter how long I wait :-\ hopefully it's just some dumb little step I keep missing. It's not a wipe issue because my safe system hasn't had any custom ROMs flashed on it yet, and I've wiped anyway lol.
Before activating back on Verizon I did a full reset via the fast/easy unbrick method. Seemed to get everything clean.

CM9 seems to have a bit of a special flashing ritual. Check out the threads on CM9 for the exact instructions and other people's findings.
I've been pretty happy with Maverick 3.0 as well. Fixed the physical keyboard (thanks Endoroid). I had Liberty before that and it was very good except no real option to enable or disable data roaming, there is no battery/data manager. Mav is not as customizable as Liberty (although it does have a toolbox with various themes to choose from) - it's been smooth and stable so far. I'm using Mav with Tag Home as a launcher and I keep a bunch of quick shortcuts collected in a couple of folders in the drop down using Bar Shortcuts.

Yes I agree, I wish Liberty had the data roaming option available. I read about a line that can be added to Liberty's build.prop to turn it on. But I also read that it may require a wipe. I did it anyway (without wipe) and will see what happens on my next trip to the US...

Build number: JZO54K.N7000JPLSB.
I have done a factory reset, and tryed to replace it with apk's I have found. I looked at rooting the phone, but I need to ensure I have it till the 28th, when if I cannot fix it my husband will root it. Please let me know if you can help.
Thank you
Nikoah

How do you know systemuiapk is missing? I would expect that it would show a boat load of errors on boot up and not run. What are the symptoms?

It is not listed in the "All Apps" section of the apps manager.
Symptoms: When my phone rings the notification to tell me who is calling does not pop up. I have to go into the phone app to even see who is calling, much less answer the call.
My notification bar is gone.
When I get a text message my phone will vibrate, but not chime.
My wall paper is gone.
I have found threads about rooted phones where people have removed the systemui that this are the same symptoms they have. The problem is that they had the original rooted program they used, so can reinstall that. I cannot do that, as my phone is not rooted. That is why I think my systemui is gone.
Install root explorer and check in /system/app folder for the apk, or in /preload/symlink/system/app. If it's there in preload, you will need to create a symlink for that in system/app.

I found it in system/app folder, but cannot install it, the phone says I cannot install it. Is there something else I can do?

You won't be able to install it as you're not rooted and it requires administrator privileges. But it's there anyway so I don't think that's the issue.
When did it stop working and was there any app you installed beforehand?

It stopped working while I was using Google voice to send a text. And, no I did not download anything right before hand.

Thats really strange... Try rebooting into recovery (Vol up, home and power held down until you see samsung logo) then choose wipe cache and reboot. I doubt that will fix it though.
Only other options I can see are to root device by installing phillz kernel, wipe cache and dalvik from recovery, or root device, reinstall the app and make sure permissions are correct, or wipe device and start from scratch.

You said you tried to replace it ? How? Do you have an odex or deoxed rom? Anyways you will need root access to resolve this issue if you dont want to go about reinstalling the rom again.

That is what I was afraid of. Thank you so much. I did try wiping the cache, and no it did not work. When I get back home to my husband I will try rooting it and going from there. Again thank you.

I looked on the forum and found systemui.apk(s) and downloaded them to my phone and tried to run them. It did not work.

Stop playing with essential parts of your system if you have absolutely no idea of what you are doing.
To get back to a reliable configuration:
download a stock rom and install it following the instructions in Dr. Ketan's thread here.
After that: start to read and learn. High probability this will protect the life of your device.
