Battery Instability - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nowadays I have a weird problem. Even though I fully charge my phone, it behaves like battery is empty. It happens in two way:
1. After some usage, it can occur at 15%.
2. While showing battery is charged enough, you restart the phone. It starts as ciritical battery level.
3. For case 1, it can happen at higher levels as well. Screen starts flickering then phone shutsdown suddenly.
I tried calibration apk. I suspect it caused some problem also.
My system was stock 4.1.2 leak. I thought it may be reason, so I downgraded to ICS. But, I still have same problem...
Any1 has an idea? Battery or phone has problem or not?

May be time to get a new battery

I opened back cover now. I am very surprised. Battery got deformed. Middle part became thicker. It cannot fit to battery slot.
I think god saved me. It could explode.
This turned from question to possible Samsung defect. So, I am agree originally I made wrong choice. But, this topic is suitable for here in the light of my new finding.

I have the exact same problem! Been wanting to change the battery but haven't found it. If you buy a new battery and everything comes back to normal, please let us know!

I have same issue as OP. My screen starts to flicker at 15% as if it's about to lose power any second.
Happens with OEM battery as well as two aftermarket hyperion batteries.

Same here.. my batterry was a little bulged at the middle and i thought it is still ok.. then it started acting up..
-It says fully charged on the battery indicator while turned off and charging
- when I turn it on, it says 50%..
- when I get to recovery (philZ stock kernel recovery) it says 1%
Then it got worse and wont turn on when unplugged... Bought a battery at our local samsung store and all the problems went away!

Awesome!! That's what I wanted to know! Now I'll look for the battery.
Does anybody know why this happens?

I had this issue last month. Changed to Mugen battery. Everything's good now.
All the symptoms described here are dying battery issues. Have them replaced before your note dies.

I was unaware of this situation and I downgraded by JellBean to first GB, then ICS. I am lucky it did not shutdown during firmware install.
I went to some official Samsung technical service. They will give me a new battery soon. I am using my Sony Ericsson Walkman series phone Luckily I have iPad with cellular. Now, I will just wait and I will hope everything will be ok.

I bought a 7000 mAh battery on ebay. It's awesome! No problem now. My battery last all day :good:

Faulty battery or faulty phone hardware?

So, a couple of weeks ago I went to bed with the Note connected to the AC charger while listening to music when sleeping. I woke up the next morning, only to find an EXTREMELY overheated phone that wouldnt boot or charge. Went to a local electronincs store and it turned out that the battery was dead so I ordered a new one. (Original battery, identical to the previous)
The first day of using the new battery I ran in to some strange behavior, the screen started to flicker as if the phone was running out of battery, the only problem was that there was atleast 30% of battery left. I have been experiencing the same kind of behavior ever since. The phone suddenly drains the battery, precentages increases or decreases when not charging, or the battery is suddenly empty at 15-40%. When I left for school today my phone was 100% charged, when I came home it was probably 50%, I listened to some music, after a while it read 15%, and before the song I was listening was done the phone started to flicker (as usual) and then turned off. I connected it to my PC and charged it for about 30 minutes, and when I turned the phone on the battery read 50%?? So basically I've experienced pretty wierd battery behavior all over.
The screen flickering has occured before when using low quality charger with battery stats at ca 1%, thats quite normal i guess?
I haven't been using low quality chargers on the new battery, nor did I under the incident that killed the previous battery, however, I've been using an original Galaxy SII charger with a 0,7A output, should be totally fine right?
I'm out of ideas what to try, I've tried to delete battery stats after a 100% charge numerous times, no change. Havent seen any battery drains from the battery monitorer. Currently using MIUI Vengeance CM9, havent experience battery drain earlier with this rom.
So what do you think? Battery, phone hardware or software?
try to clean the battery contacts at the back of your phone also clean out some dusts or lints on your usb charging port. Charge it back after to 100% and see if your still getting the same problem.
The same problem still occurs, thanks tip though.

It's unlikely its hardware related, but get a replacement battery from somewhere preferably stock, they're not expensive. It's not hardware, most likely duff battery.

Finally bothered to buy a new battery (again), and so far the battery life seems to be all good!
I guess I was just a bit unlucky by having the orginal battery break, and then receiving a faulty battery after ordering a replacement A series of unfortunate and confusing coincidents

Note flickering when battery is almost dead

Hi everyone, I've experienced a problem in these last days.
Using google I found a guy who had my same problem, as it appears in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZQ-hbAClvE&feature=player_embedded
Never happened before I changed battery (I had the one given with the note, but last week I put another one of the two I bought, always by Samsung). One should be actually damaged because it gave me not only this problem, but several messages on screen like "battery disconnected". With the other one I started using today everything was fine until it arrived to 11% - it's not reliable though because I didn't make in time to calibrate the battery - and then it start flickering and shutted down.
Anybody know anything about this?!
I also have the same problem, I've read that should be normal, and it does not occur with some batteries. It should be due to the power supply

so there's nothing to worry about? because it happened to me 3 times and twice the Note asked me to change the time, since it was resetted to 1/1/2000... and it didn't sound normal to me :/
I saw this, too, just before my Note had major filesystem corruption. I can't think of any other reason for it. I wrote it all up over in the Q&A section.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Not adding a solution, just more info for diagnosis: My phone gets this when I'm down to 2% and using a cheapo gold battery off eBay. So maybe battery-quality is something to do with it.
As far as I know, it doesn't happen when I use the official battery.
Scared me the first few times, but it's happened five times and not damaged my Note in any way (although naturally I turn it off, give it a minute, and then start charging it back up).
well, I really hope this has nothing to do with battery quality because I bought them as ORIGINAL batteries! but they could be fake though, that's why it would be interesting to check some kind of serial to let us know if they're official or just fakes. In this case I would ask for the refund and use the old battery...
about the file system corruption, could be the battery the cause of that? because until the day I've used my original battery I haven't experienced any of these issues, so that's why I relate the battery to the problem of flickering... and that's why I don't absolutely want this junk to power my Note!
I didn't had that problem until I switched to Hydracore kernel. Now it flickers violently even under 20 % battery.

Its abviously from battry voltage.
Dont forget the screen is amoled.this behavior might be from this kind of technology.
Anyway nothing wrong here so far....

Its a question, so belongs in the Q&A section.
Your Note would flicker because it's trying to get more juice out on a a battery that is almost about to ran out...
Moreover, a cheapo replacement battery or an original one that has been wrongly calibrated before would also have this kind of a symptom.

I don't get it:
Yesterday night the phone was in airplane mode with a 60-70% charge.
This morning the phone is dead, and I needed to charge it again; after 10 minutes I switched on the device and... voilà, the battery level is 50%. WTF?!
I think I'll stay a couple of days more with this battery and then go back with my old one, asking the seller for a refund for both batteries.
Flickers on mine too.
I assumed it was normal.
Ye isnt it normal?

Strange battery drops and screen flicker

I had been using Cassies Xtralite rom V8 along with Hydracore 4.3 Std for weeks and everything was fine. One day the phone restarted on its own and the battery dropped from 61% to 1% just after it restarted. Then the screen started flickering too and the phone shut down on its own. This was strange because I had just charged the phone to 100% 2 hours before that and it didn't make sense. Therefore, I charged it to full while switched off and tried again. The battery drained to around 80% quite fast and then after trying to enter recovery to clear the Dalvik cache the battery went down to 5% when the phone restarted. This repeated for a couple of days until I had to do a Full Wipe and flash the rom and kernel again. However, the battery drain and sudden battery drop after restart still remain.
I read about a fuel gauge and tried to reset it by taking the battery out for a couple of minutes after charging to 100% while switched off but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any answers to this?
Thanks
Charge your phone to 100% and clear the battery stats in cwm
It doesnt improve battery life but improves the accuracy of the displayed battery percentage
Or try changing the rom and see if the problem still exists
some roms appear to be experimenting with battry percentage based on usage. Try another rom.
Ultimately I had to go back to gb, with partition and load bootloader and stay clear of the rom in question to fix my stuff. I dare not go back again because of this issue.
I think I had to do this cause the various roms messed with special partitions, which arent wiped or formatted properly throught cwm. Migrating between different roms didnt fix it for me. wtf.
all at own risk
edit went back and had issues again. Used above approach and it didn't work anymore. It sucks.

Thank you for your replies. I tried charging to 100% and recalibrating or clearing batt stats but it did't help much.
Actually yesterday my phone would not boot and stuck to the bootloader. I had to do a factory reset in CWM to load again but as soon as it did the phone worked for 1-2 hrs and then reached around 70% batt fast and the screen flickered and turned off on its own. Uppn restarting batt was at 5%
Tried restoring a nandroid from mid September and things are slightly better. As soon as it starts the flickering I plug it on the AC and it doesn't die, but that's not always possible. It might have something to do with the batt voltages. I had flashed a Hydracore OC version and it might have messed things up. When charging the voltage goes over 4200mV.

Hi,the very simple methode for your problem is........buy a new battery and insert it in your phone then start it and problem solved !
Very easy don't you think ?
Btw,repeatitly flash rom, kernel,or all side stuff with flashtool or like that and use your phone with high frequency kill your battery very fast !
So,
the first symptom of a dead battery is autoreboot and quick down level.
Don't try to use battery test in factory with custom rom because 80% they not support it
In this case, you have always wrong indications in test mode (batteryHealt=good/100)even if your battery is dead !
Trust me and good luck
Oh and, stay away from chinese battery with high voltage and good price !
Prefer Choose stock or mugen power
Ciao

If your battery is bulged then it's a dud and won't retain charge, plus you run the risk of it bursting which will kill the phone outright.

screen flickering - a common problem?

Hey guys!
Recently I read a lot about people who are facing the screen flickering issues on their Note. (YouTubv-Video, thanks to Parth)
For those who don't know about the problem:
When your phone is discharging it'll randomly begins flickering and shut down, then restart with 1 % battery left. The performance of the battery is dropping from around 4000 mV to 2500 mV... A new battery should fix this.
The strange thing I've noticed is that those people bought their Note around 12 months ago.
I bought it in November 2011 and got the issues around 3 weeks ago.
Could this be a common problem? Let me hear your opinion / experiences.
I've had this flickering for the first time about 1 week ago, after I replaced the original battery with a fresh one (from Anker): The flickering began when the new battery had 0% left. But instead of shutting down, the phone was flickering for about 1-2 minutes before the battery ran out of power and the phone was instantly switched off - without a "clean" shutdown. So it seems that the new battery does not "tell" the phone to shutdown before it is empty, and the flickering might be a symptom of a very weak battery. Just a guess...
Yes .. it happens on low battery. have noticed this on 3 notes already

my note is 15 months old. i started having this flickering issue 2 weeks back and got a new samsung oem battery 5 days back. the new battery has manufacturing date of 2012.12.27 on it. the flickering issue was 98% cured after getting a new battery as the only time i got flickering issue with the new battery was when my battery level was 8%.
now the strange thing happened yesterday. i was online on facebook for quite a long time on my note, upto the point when my battery reached 1%. then i decided to give it a rest and turned it off manually via proper power off. my note was turned off for about 2 hrs, then i came home and connected my charger while my note was turned off, but the charging indicator never showed up. i thought maybe it will take few moments for it to show up. i checked my note again after half an hour but it still wasn't showing charging indicator. i tried turning it on but it didn't turn on. i tried putting my old original battery and it worked perfectly as before along with the flickering issue. it was charging as usual so the charger is not the problem. i tried putting the new battery again and still it is neither turning on or showing charging. what am i supposed to do now?
EDIT: i think my new battery has gone into deep discharge. is there any way to revive it?

Guys i dont think this is a simple battery issue.... I think this may be a media bug on rom Jelly Bean ...
I have the same problem and the batery was full charged with 98% ... I just unplugued for the charger and it just flickered screen and bummm phone off and battery drain... and it allways heats up the phone.... I play a game a lot called rage of bahamut and it started all by playng that game lot of time...
Now the problem is gueting worse... just by watching a simple site it goes down .... this is NOT a battery issue...it must be from the rom or kernel ...
its like something its not controling the battery usage correctly ... it only hapens when its not plugued to the charger....
can some op say something about this issue?? Please

Sorry. Yes, it's rooted. Stock XXJVU, Semaphore kernel 2.5.0b (been using CF-Root and stock kernels before that, but there were no differences in battery level readings after reboot). Nope. How many 0-100% cycles would be necessary for it to do the trick (or fail)?

I thought that someone bought such stuff on eBay and could suggest me some reliable seller(s) so that I don't buy some fake garbage labeled as Anker that will blow up in my pocket. Nevermind.
Okay, in order to not experience bad battery life again, what exactly should I do once my battery arrives? Wipe battery stats, few 0-100% cycles, later just make sure battery never goes below, say, 25%, and I should be fine? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yeah, pretty much what you just said. Wiping the battery stats is a bit pointless but do it if it makes you feel good
Polarcell or Anker are the ones to get. There aren't any fakes of those that I've heard of. All the fakes I've seen claim silly capacities.

Dev, I am facing problem after buying a used Galaxy i9000 .
1.I charged my battery fully [100%] , then using after 5/6hr when battery goes down to 34%-35% , the Cell phone suddenly got shut down , When I plug it in , then it says battery was empty . Then I have to charge it again .
2.When battery is 66%-67% , I tun off my phone and started after 5min , I saw it's only 17% !!!
What is the remedy/ solution for this problem .
[Don't say to change ROM/kernel/ clean delvik cache , I have already done them]
Do this problem will be solved by Changing battery ?

Is your Galaxy overclocked?
I mean, consider lowering your CPU clock as it seemingly stopped sudden blackouts on my Galaxy.
EDIT: Nope, it didn't.
I had same problem. Bulged battery. I bought a new battery and it fixed the problem
You need a new one!
