A. INTRO
I. What is this?
This guide is designed to give you a better understanding of what a noob is, how to recognize them, some details about them, and how to avoid or get rid of them. It mostly applies to online forums, which are the main targets of migrating noobs.
II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.
Noobs are often referred to as n00bs as a sign of disrespect toward them, and it's often hella funny, but I will refer to them as noobs during this reading.
* Usually the topic at hand on an internet forum.
B. COMMON NOOB CHARACTERISTICS
I. Noobish
Often, but not always, noobs will attempt to communicate in their own primitive language, known as "n00bish." It is a variant of the hacker language that exposes them as having little intelligence or will to learn. Here is an example of some noobish. Do not attempt to comprehend it: it cannot be discerned without professionals at hand.
stFU /../..an, i r teh r0xx0rz liek emin3m, u cna go tO EHLL OR ATLE4St help m3 wit hthIS!!111!!!!!!!1~~1!!``!! LOLLOLOLLOLOLlOoLLOlollLLl u n00b
Although you may find this unbelievably funny and/or annoying, it is best to restrain yourself and keep from talking back to them, as they are very territorial and easily angered. This will result in their attempted verbal abuse of you, possibly backed up by other noobs, because they work in packs when doing offensive tasks. It is not an easy task to learn this language because our intelligent accent will keep it from sounding quite right when spoken. You can write some simple noobish of your own, however, by slamming your face into your keyboard repeatedly.
II. Where to find n00bs
On the internet, n00bs make their colonies on forums. They migrate in waves, usually on weekends, and proceed to clog up bandwidth with stupid questions and sometimes even stupid answers. If you happen to be unfortunate enough to be on a board large enough to attract migrating noobs, there will hopefully be authority in charge who is smart enough to take extermination measures before they can make nests and larger colonies. THE BANNER HAMMER is one form of authority.
Larger colonies can result in the mutation of some into spammers. Not commercial spammers, but pointless spammers. A noob can become one of these at any point, but the larger the amount of noobs, the more chance pointless spammers will appear.
Off the internet, noobs appear anywhere the focus is on learning or discussing something specific.
III. Behavior of noobs
Since noobs are basically ignorant bastards, they have a lot in common. The most often seen characteristic is their fluency in noobish, which is why it got its own section. They will also be very self confident as if they were the absolute best at what they are in fact the worst at. Also, they are quite agressive and self-centered, and tend to laugh a lot using many L's and O's in rapid sucession (the noobish word for laughing like an ultimate retard).
It is their instinct to assemble in packs for defense, and they often attempt to organize packs that they call teams. Unfortunately for them, teams usually result in a total loss of communication and they can often begin to fight amongst each other. These teams are quite unlike those formed by non-noobs.
Noobs have difficulty reading English and cannot comprehend the idea of authority.
Therefore, they have an all-out disregard for rules, basic or not. A good way to identify a noob (bad) vs. a newb (good) is to tell them (or have an authority tell them) which rule they are unknowingly breaking. If they respond with an apology and fix it, they are probably not a noob. If they react by insulting everything around them in rapid noobish and causing general mayhem, it is because they are a noob and have had a small seizure due to their inability to understand what is happening.
IV. Noob Religion
Noobs follow a variation of the 1337 (sometimes 7331) religion, in which they worship the number in odd rituals and put altars in their forum avatars and signatures. They often call themselves 1337, which experts say is somewhat like calling themselves godly in a human language. It's best to not interfere with their religious fantasies and practices because that can lead to a noob uprising, which can turn a forum to mush in less than a week.
V. More about noob habitats
Noobs often attempt to maintain their own web pages. Some common features of these lairs are a terrible lack of content, background music, lots of pointless animated gifs, and pages that say some variation of 'tHEir isnothinG H34r yEtt LOLLOLOL!111!1!!~~~!!`! 13371337', which means 'Nothing here yet' in noobish.
They will also have large, seemingly infinite marquees of 88X31 affiliate buttons replaced with red X's scattered here and there, and possibly a hit counter showing a number less than 100. These habitats are numerous but fairly easy to avoid because only noobs link to them. So if you can identify a noob, don't go to its homepage. Simple as that.
C. AVOIDING NOOBS
I. Make sure you aren't one
Note: This section is bilingual so even noobs can make the discovery if they haven't already.
English (T4lk)-
Read the above parts of this guide carefully. If you find yourself unable to comprehend any of it but are instead beginning to think about how great you are and how awesome 'teh 1337' is, you might want to take one of the many available online quizzes to check your noobancy.
Noobish (133713371337)- Liek, u gott4 re3D teh gudieCAREFUl1y and tehn OMG LIEK I AM R0XX0RZ ya anD ify 0u turn into teh reTARDED u gota go 2 MY WEBP4GE LOLLOLOL!!111~11 ad check 4 warez n stfuu. if u r a n00b go2HELL LOLLOLOlROFLMFAO11!!!11!!!! a/s/l pos gtg n00b suxx0rz ur b0xx0rz OLOOOLOLLLL HELP HELP HELP 1337133713371337
II. Major noob avoiding strategies
The main factor in attracting migrating herds of noobs is a large, active forum. If you find one of these, look to see if it has the management to avoid noob infestation. If not, look for a small or mid-sized forum that covers the same topic so you can enjoy your time there before the noobs find it.
Another way to keep noobs from interfering with your life is to become part of the authority on one of these forums. But that's often hard to do so you'll probably be better off avoiding larger forums first off. If you do manage to become part of the authority, however, take full advantage of it and establish extermination policies so that normal people can have a nice time without noob infestations.
So how can I change this?
***Please try some of the following***

1) Using the "Search All Forums" found at the top right of XDAs main forum page
enter your search criteria in the search box. Be short and precise ex: HTC One X USB drivers
Search through the hits you get.
2) Try Let me Google that for you
3) Be clear in your question's
Describe your situation, in brief. Do not add expletives as this is an area of how you set the mood of your question.
ex: My stupid phone won't boot after I flashed this version.
This buys you nothing and will gain you the noob identity.
This would be better stated as such
I was able to install the new (whatever it is you installed) however, after the reboot I only have my boot screen. Here are the steps I took. Please help me understand what I did wrong and how can I fix this This will gain you a much better answer and if you've found the right person, you should get the help you need. If you feel you are being bullied, Use the steps found here {Guide} Getting a Moderators help [/Center}

Just so you know, this is the kind of post that will give the nOOb status.

So glad I stumbled onto this...absolutely hilarious!
The truth will always forge thru and pay off with a chuckle.
Very well done!
One tremendous benefit of this posting was the inclusion of the "Let me Google that for you" an absolute must for the toolkit.
Another excellent small surprise found while browsing.
Thanx Mr. Stark!

Son, we live in a world that has websites, and those websites have to be visited by men with computers. Who’s gonna visit them all? You? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You curse the newbs. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That a newb’s life, while tragic, probably creates traffic and advertising opportunities. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, creates traffic. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about in chatrooms, you want me on that computer, you need me on that computer. We use words like help… and please… and thanks. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent lurking. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a person who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very web traffic and advertising that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a keyboard and answer a post. Either way, I don't give a darn what you think you are entitled to.

I presume your post was about maximizing efficiency and in that case, here's a piece of advice for you as well. Your word count suggests you hit the caps on/off key 416 useless times, not to mention how annoying it is for readers.
Pleasantries aside...The reduced size of PDAs, their increased functionality, Apple's mega marketing machine and kickass iPhone have combined to bring Pocket PCs into the mainstream. With that comes mainstream consumers who hit websites such as this for information. I am one of them and it's true, perhaps I should hesitate before posting. But for every 10000 new Pocket PC enthusiasts that come along, there is one person who's an adept programmer and contributes something of value. IMHO it makes avoiding threads or comments that don't agree with me such a non issue.
Its so funny how so many of you really really got hurt by my comment, awww im so sorry.
Only I got to answer the caps thing cause I myself was bothered by why that happened, I certainly did not take the time to caps each word.
And this thread is def. making me and my friends on here laugh, especially nitpicking my words, is that all you have on me wow, if it makes you feel that good, then go for it, keep posting your buys in every thread and make it even harder for guys and those who contribute information. I have the time to write this because not that it just bothers me but I am trying to stop the threads that go on for pages when its a disccusion of a price that is not neccessary. It's obvious that most of you who have responded don't care and that is selfish. But you don't care anyway's I mean you haven't even donated a dime.

I started this thread because I kept reading other threads where one person is asking a question about a rom, and another guys got into a conversation about a price, and then the next 3 pages were about his premier price and the thread which dealt about a rom now was lost in prices. Then another thread about today screens, and again the damn price thing popped up, and then the nght i wrote this thread another idiot changed the topic and spoke about geting his tilt for 199. Now you try to look for a topic and when you read and when I say read, I mean read the entire thread from page 1 until the present and when you get's off topic over a price see if it bothers you.
I don't see how this doesnt bother anyone else? maybe because you don't read a thread entirely but I do, this isn't personal, I havent mentioned anyones names or attacked anyone, I am attacking the idea of posting you great buy in a thread that has nothign to do with you calling ATT and asking for a premier price. And for the record, I got the TILT for $99.00 with no premier account. And I posted that in a relevent thread.
Why does asking people not to mention their price in every thread a problem.
wow you are so serious, smile it wont kill you!
But anyway, I don't want you to fall of your chair or even blow. Here's the deal, cause you obviously have not enderstood anything I wrote. I simply said, don't keep posting tilt prices in threads that don't deal with tilt prices. Is that so complicated or insulting.
As for being a Newb, So am I, I ask allot of questions and I was told to do a search, but when I want to look for tilt rom and in the process I have to read pages of a thread, that deals with certain rom mention the price and then having 10 other people conversing back about the price it confuses the thread. Many people cant properly find the answer to their questions because people who get so excited post unrelevent information in a thread that doesnt deal with that issue.
Moderators usually stop it, but why have them do it, just devote a thread to your silly Tilt buying tactics and keep it there, how is thsi insulting to you or anyone else. I even contributed to that thread and mentioned I got my Tilt for 99.00 and explained how, but what I will tell you is that I didn;t post it in Duty's test Rom 3, because it has no buisness of being there.
This is my reply I've gotten 30 PM's from people who agree with me but don't have the balls to support me on here, so so you can sleep and relax I not only removed my thread, which I wrote. I removed it not because I have the idea if you can;t beet em join em, but because I realized there wil always be those who will not read and those that will always put down those who tell the truth. I should have realized that before I thought of trying to make a difference and urge people to just stop and read, But if moderators can't stop stupid Newbies then who am I. So I am going to close this and guess what you won! are you happy you win! I give up!

WM 6.5 has not been officially released by M$ yet and when it is, it will not be available for the Kaiser.
But waiting for M$ and HTC to improve our phones is not why we are here, go here to unlock your phone and then take advantage of the many " custom 6.5 roms " available in the rom development section

Give the guy a break
I mean, the whole point of a site like this is to serve information. Frankly, you need to be a borderline OCD to find what you need..
Why does it have to be a 'rite of passage'? Its a valid enough question for a newb. There isn't a 6.5 sticky in the ROM section, listing available ROMs, and a search yields 87 page results, each with their own # of threads. How do you pick which one to use? I'm sure to get flamed myself for this, but I can understand the frustration of some who just wants to upgrade to 6.5 and get on with his/her life, without having to spend a week searching, just because 'y'all had to do it'.
The whole point of these devices is so SAVE US TIME, not for us to slavishly spend 3 days working out how upgrade the crappy ROM, unlock the phone, and erase all data, only to try and reload the whole load back. And then do it again because the dialler was rubbish, or the sw keyboard didnt work, it was too slow, or something like this. In the old days of valves and ticker tapes, they had 'acolytes' in white coats to serve the mainframe, change the valves and unclog the ticker puncher. We were slaves to the machine. Seems to be happening here too!
Give full kudos to those wizards who create the ROMs, no idea where they get the time or energy, but bless them for doing it.
PS. I am borderline OCD myself, just in different things now.
If it really is all about proving your Google skills, I stand corrected. But I remember my first time too, thinking I was about to brick my £400 device, and incur the wrath of my provider.
Slay.

I have to agree with you. I love to research, but it can be a daunting task with all the threads and possible roms available for your phone. Then finding a radio that works well for everything, if you are lucky.
I have spent the last few days looking at different roms and radios, with my wife asking "What are you doing that takes that long?" If she only knew that I could brick my phone and be forced to buy a new one to experiment on LOL
But, hey it can be addictive to get it just the way you like it.

This is not McDonalds, this is not Harrods, this is not HTC tech support. The whole point of this site is to " serve " no one.
This is a library, a vault of WinMo and HTC knowledge. When you walk into a library for knowledge on the Hong Kong economy, you don't walk upto the librarian and say, ".........gimme all you've got on world enconomy, I' ll be sitting over here waiting. " Nor do you announce at the door, to all others there , what you are looking for.
The librarian points you in the right direction and you go and search and read, and read and search until you are able to go into work and say, " boss, here is my proposal on our expansion into the Hong Kong market, make me lead on this account. "
No one is paid here to help anyone. When people do help, it is out of the goodness of their hearts and their desire to share their " hobby " with you.
They are not here to serve anyone anything.
If you have neither time nor the desire or the " OCD focus " then leave your phone alone.

That Kyphur post should be permanently displayed above the main menu.
Word!!!
In all honesty, the OP could have just gone into rom development and seen a bunch of WM 6.5 ROMS, there would not have been days of eye burning search's.
The fact is this. You are an idiot if you don't take the time to educate yourself on the things you want to do. You owe it to yourself and your wallet to make sure you fully understand all of the things you need to know before bricking the thing.
As one of you posted, I too was scared during my first flash, I read the same posts over and over and over and over, until I felt like I understood what was going on..
Yes it's hard to search sometimes but the more stupid threads are opened the harder it gets, hence

it really is not about going through "a rite of passage" when a noob gets flamed...the flaming is to drive home a point...and the point is that the time you spend reading and researching is an investment that will save you from mistakes and future troubleshooting and it will save you from bricking your very expensive device (which is a natural fear) in the worst case.

As a newcomer to xda developers (but a veteran of other technical forums) I cheer this perspective.
Whilst I am prepared to sweat blood & tears sifting through the myriad topics on device & ROM options, I would happily bow to my subject peers if they could simply answer a basic question with the required answer; rather than flaming the poster for not having read every post on the forum and deciphering the rubiks code, or something like that...

The problem is that you don't have to sweat blood & tears for a question as simple as looking @ ROM development, noted if you can see the STICKY @ the top then you can probebly see bellow too?
Most of the common users see @ least 5+ posts a day that could have been solved via a simple walk in the park not a dig in the graveyard.
We are not here to persicute "flame" noobs just to help them if they have done the required searching for ones self, they learn nothing by being spoonfed except to be more spoonfed.

I need some consulting / hiring an X1 expert

Hi,
I have an X1 with the latest updated software from SE.
I want to see if I can get my device to be more responsive / improved / resolve some quirks.
But I don't really have time to read through pages of FAQs and learn about cooking and kitchens and then research all the roms, etc.
So what I would like to request is for some phone optimization consulting services in exchange for green rectangles.
What I'd like to do is:
- Discuss my needs for the phone and how I currently use it.
- Get feedback on how we can improve the phone's performance and responsiveness to those needs.
- Walk me through any kind of ROM fixes/upgrades.
- Give me step-by-step documentation on repeating the process so I can do it again if I need to.
Please either post here or send a PM with your qualifications and an estimate. I think this will run about 2 hours (1 hr or less of discussion via IM and then 1 hr of doing upgrades, etc.)
Thanks.
well...as a personal non-offensive opinion. but if you don't have time to read here, then you shouldn't be thinking about trying to mod your phone to begin with.
I'll give you this free advice.
if you want to get rid of some annoying things and the very very unresponsive speed on the wm 6.1 on your x1. get xperiatweak2. that's something that'll help a heck load.
if you are willing to take the chance of modifying the rom (which sony will say your warrenty is over if they find any rom mods that have been done to phone), then read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446070 . as far as modding the rom goes, this topic has the most accurate information i've found so far.
and I highly recommand you read the forum topics that are posted here in the forum. That will help you more than us trying to tell you what to do and do everything for you.
we are all here willing to help you, but you need to do your part too.

I'm helping to start a new industry of cell phone optimization consultants, and you seem to turn your nose up at it.
I started my company doing things that others could do if they spent a few hours looking through documentation but just didn't have the aptitude or time to do so.
I have XPTweaker already. I presume you guys have made improvements to the ROM(s) to make the device run faster and better - or am I mistaken?

hey guys what is going on here ?
the man wants personalized help and is willing to pay for it. this is a reasonable request and i find it "trollish" to start and argue about it. it doesnt really matter what his background is. its a standart business decision to save some time and pay someone qualified to do required work or provide infos.
also i find it very annoying to scroll past a bunch of useless so-called "funny" images just to keep track of real posts.
how about helping people instead of using this as a personal entertainment-stage ?

+1.
To OP, maybe you can list your spec/requirements here. Then me or others could see how to help.
BTW, HTC Advance config tools is much better than Xperiatweak.
Maybe this better fits in Marketplace but I have a feeling that the expertise I am looking for lives here and not there.
I do not have time to become an expert in Rom modification and an expert in the variety of ROMs available, or in all of the applications available. I just don't. I'm an expert in other areas and can't also be an expert in this one. The opportunity costs are too high.
I tried reading the post earlier on HOW TO mod the rom but that's just a small part of the equation. WHICH rom? Why? what other applications? Etc.
There's something called comparative advantage. It means that - for at least one person here I hope - it is better for both of us for me to do what I'm good at, and use the revenue from that to compensate you for your expertise in X1A modifications.
If everyone took the approach of having to personally learn how to do everything they wanted to do, I would be out of a job and they would get a bad result or run out of time.
I think there's a certain elitism that some people hold, and it's probably a big reason as to why Linux hasn't gotten anywhere in the main stream, but I know that not everyone is so elitist so I'm hopeful that at least one of you who is an expert in this area would like to earn a fair amount over a period of an hour or two.
Anyway, PM me if interested. Posting here would probably get you labeled a "sellout" by your peers.

Alright, perhaps I misunderstood. That's just how it came across to me.
I think that Jackleung made a good point - it might be a good idea to be a bit more specific as to what you want.
As in the scenario you described earlier, here people also have specializations within certain parts of modifying the ROM/software. With a bit of specificity you might just find the right guy(/girl) for the job.
I'm not saying that you have to either join the club or screw off.
all that I'm saying is that if your willing to pay money and get someone to teach you the steps of getting things done and all that. why not spend a little time here and read some of the posts that people have posted up?
most tutorial posts here are all written up in steps, it's simple, easy, and direct.
and like the other guys have been saying all this time, you need to be more specific as to what you want so that the other members here can help you.
and similar to what I said from my first reply to you. I'm in no way trying to be rude to you or offend you in any sense. I just wanted to give you a little suggestion to help that's all.

I agreed to his "comparative advantage" theory. It's true it's more effective if everyone works on his/her specialty. (e.g. I gave up to teach my wife how to config (not even rom cooking) WM phone. I rather configure it for her... )
And least synpax stated very clearly he is willing to pay. Unlike some suckers who request free service without do his/her own readings. But again, it's more effective if synpax can list some of your spec/requirement here first.
orelsi, please stop your pointless and harassal reply.

Opinions: Are we too hard on Noobs?

Hey all,
Something has been rolling around in my head the past couple days, and I wanted to get some opinions.
Here's the basic notion: We might be too hard on noobs.
Now a couple of disclaimers...
1. Nothing excuses anyone from searching or doing their due diligence. I've seen more duplicate threads than I can recount, and yes it's annoying.
2. Nothing excuses anyone from etiquette. Being polite and courteous when asking for and receiving help is essential and is perfectly reasonable to expect.
That being said, here is where I think we take the same rules we expect noobs to adhere to, and break them ourselves. First of all, this community EXISTS to foster communication, education, and provide tools to enhance the products we all love. Anyone who says anything less is quite frankly selling XDA short. As such, and as cheesy as it may sound, XDA is a "beacon of hope" to those looking for help amidst the soup of lesser websites online. Before I knew anything, I knew about XDA, and slowly but surely I came to know more. But in my time here, and it seems like "more and more", I have also come to see noobs get increasingly hassled, berated, and outright knee-capped for asking duplicate questions, posting in the wrong forums, not searching for common questions, etc... Now by all means if we see a noob doing these things, TELL THEM, but do so in a manner befitting the community.
Not long ago I read a noob-ish thread, at this point I don't even remember what made it so, but I remember the reactions. The FIRST response was polite, it notified the OP of the infraction, but pointed him in the right direction with a friendly approach. The next FIVE responses were nothing short of hostile... "Learn to effing search noob, READ the damn stickies moron, Gawd another noob who doesn't know how to read!" etc... ONE guy replied rudely, and 4-5 more jumped on the bandwagon as if "Insulting Noob" was an Olympic sport and judging was imminent... each trying to 1-up the last. Personally, I was disgusted.
My point is this... as "good" as it may make some folks here to rip a noob a new one before breakfast and prove to the world just how big your e-d**k is, it does little to move us forward, and personally if I had received such a response as a noob, I doubt I would have come back. I just think maybe we need to ease off on the bashing, and bone up on our "polite education". We were all there at some point after all.
It does not matter where you go on the internet, bashing is just a part of the workings. Some take it far while others take it to the extreme.
If you see people being overly harsh on noobs then please report it. Of course a gentle suggestion that searching and reading is the way to go is not overly harsh imo but please report any insulting and downright rude behaviour to a moderator.

...which makes you lazy; even Google has implemented instant search because having to hit search just makes you feel like your doing to much work
There's nothing wrong with being hard on n00bs as long as it's in a constructive and polite fashion. Being rude to one just because they're repeating a question that's been asked before isn't the way to handle it though.
Question:
"How do i root my HTC XXX..."
Acceptable answer:
"This has been asked many times. Please use the Search function or have a look in the device specific forum where you'll get better information."
Unacceptable answer:
FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU....this has been asked before you noob. Are you too f****n stupid to do a search??!!??11 Get off my forum you scum sucking leach..."
Hope that clarifies my point
Some of the sentiments on the "unacceptable answer" stems from frustration. I, for one, have for many months shun away from the dev sections simply because of the sheer noob overload.
Most of these peeps simply don't bother to search, and in my opinion, are just too impolite. They come in, make a new topic (first infraction), ask repeated questions (2nd) in the wrong section (3rd) in a very impolite manner (4th, and greatest) with wrong grammar and jumbled up sentences (5th, and hopefully last infraction).
If the n00b would just be POLITE and legible, and use the magic word (please), I would forgive most of the infractions and gladly point out the right thing to do. I might even do a search for them.
So it's not really a community thing that we treat new users like FNG, but here, in this hallowed grounds, I would expect that these new users show some modicum of respect towards the people who turn mundane gadgets into something awesome.
And yes, I get disproportionately angry and respond accordingly whenever I see a dev or a mod get bashed (er... if I did that before, please forgive me ) and I always appreciate their efforts, whatever it may be.

Hi guys, I am a noob, as I am forced to make 10 posts somewhere else before entering the development area. It is OK and it is not the main point...
I think the issue of heated discussions in various Internet forums is broader than, say, bashing or nursing the noobs. Don't you think that as soon one starts writing to a forum, they immediately get a feeling of false ownership. This causes all sorts of emotions. Silly, isn't it? The forums are supposed to be public, anonymous and impersonal.
Anyway, just my 5p. Seven more meaningless posts to go... Best wishes.

You're welcome. Due to my nature i'm perfect for taking part in psycho experiments!
I donno, maybe not hard enough... The more I get involved in the community for my phone, as well as read on XDA in general, the more I start to think some kinda test should be involved.
Tho this might sound like much, I'm starting to think that a minimum post number should be needed just to be able to view the development sections for phones (and 10 is not enough). Or something to help them get better acquainted with the process for finding info here.
Then something more (maybe a minimum thanks meter value?) to show that they have enough understanding to be able to troubleshoot their devices before actually having access to the files that may cause issues, and subsequently post about them.
I'm aware it would be hard to implement and maintain, but it would clear away a lot the "junk" that covers the forums. Plus who ever said XDA is a place for everyone and their grandmother? Some of the stuff on here boarders on illegal, and the majority is well outside what the carriers/manufacturer want us doing with these devices.
Now on a different (possibly more in tune with the OP's initial thoughts) note. Yes, I'ed have to say some people, and in an increasing number, are very harsh on "noobs." Of which none is called for... The way I handle a situation as sakai4eva outlined is largely to ignore the person, so that they get the impression that what they have posted is not worth reading. If persistant then I would explain in as few words as possible what they have done wrong and why their post is getting ignored. Bashing and/or flaming only gives them a notion that they can also post that way, which creates even more obnoxious posts/topics. It's well know and overly demonstrated in forums (and any other place ppl can freely/easily post) all over the internet - that people will be mean, harsh, aggressive, and vulgar on the internet because they are not dealing with a person face to face.

I am sorry... what? Are you seriously accusing the moderator staff of pretending that the rule does not exist?? And calling moderators/members/both ignorant? Under what grounds are you calling people ignorant? The "art" of searching on the site is not dead and we enforce it by reminding people that they need to search. We are not going to go around banning and infracting every person who asks something without searching because that would be ridiculous and a monumental waste of time. Four things can happen out of people not searching and asking right away:
1. They get the answer;
2. They get flamed;
3. They get directed to the answer and then flamed;
4. They get reported to us, in which case, most moderators will direct the person in the appropriate direction with a little reminder of where the search button is located.
The last one does not often happen because people over the years have learned to ask and wait for an answer in the correct section. So, moderator involvement for this minor offense has been limited to moving the question to Q&A for the most part.
Get your facts straight before you go off accusing people of things you don't even know.
you said:
People are not required to search or read which has lead to many threads becoming chaotic and often flooded with the same questions repeated many times. I know I personally have reported these people only to be told the moderators will not take action against those who blatantly disregard rule #1.

Again, read above. The only action we do take is to move the question out of the thread and into the proper area. Some moderators will go the extra mile and help the person in question (I know I still do to this day whenever I move a question... if I know the answer, I move the question and reply to it trying to help the member). I have been a member for FAR longer than you have been (and I know that your reg date is not when you started using our site) and "not searching" or posting questions where they don't belong has been an issue for as long as I can remember. People are, have, and will ALWAYS be required to search. In fact, in order to tackle this we have gone the extra mile and implemented things like Q&A areas, XDA Assist, etc. However, we do not ban people for not searching, plain and simple... never have, and never will. Your thread and the petition are called "equal enforcement of the rules", if you have reported members as many times as you claim, and have always gotten the same response (mods will take no further actions other than maybe moving the question), then I would think that the enforcement is rather even across the board.

Nearly every bit of information you could ever need exists on XDA but as people continue to clutter the site with nonsense and repeated questions it becomes harder and harder to find the relevant info creating a cycle that needs to be broken sooner rather than later.

The forum will continue to grow... I am sorry but there is no cycle to be broken. What needs to happen is that users need to be educated to know how to search for the information they so desperately need.

I petition the one of three things happen at xda, 1.) Remove rule #1 completely " This would resolve this issue as if the rule does not exist then there is not need for a reaction by the staff thereby eliminating the inequality in the staffs treatment of offenders for rule violations."

With all due respect, why don't we also eliminate the 10 Commandments while we are at it? Eliminating the "Thou shall not kill", should alleviate all the tensions in the Middle East and people would not get so riled up every time a bomb goes off near a school, don't you think? Screw speed limits as well!! This is great! I will get to floor my Bugatti Veyron in a school zone!!!! YAY.... Anarchy FTW!

2.) Create a rule for the moderation staff to enforce all rules equally "This would solve the issue utilizing the current issue escalation, users will be warned upon first offense and then it will escalate into points being added and eventually banning."

Uhmm... that is exactly how we do things, except for special cases such as people posting racist, religious, sexual, or other kinds of comments aimed at someone's persona (death threats or threats of physical violence for instance). Spammers/spambots are probably the only other time we go for the kill right away. We take most cases to the absolute extreme in attempts to educate our users and try to give them chances. To put things in perspective, normally, for regular offenses, a member is not banned until like the 3rd or 4th time a moderator has to be in touch with him/her. (warning->infraction->infraction->short ban->Longer ban->permanent ban).... quite a few opportunities before a member is denied access altogether, if you ask me.

3.) Give each device a Jr. Moderator that actually owns and spends time in said devices section. " Moderators are volunteers, typically you have a strict set of criteria that the more knowledgeable and irritated users cannot meet. Ignore past offenses and create a set of standards for these users that allow them to help maintain their sections while also keeping their attitudes in check."

Why don't we go ahead and employ a sex offender as a kindergarten teacher as well? Forget about past offenses.... Our moderators must meet certain criteria to be accepted as moderators, but knowledge about a specific device is not one of them. You know why? Because in this day and age, where devices become obsolete within a year of release, and people changing them that often, we would have to fire all of/most of our staff within a year's time. Each device has a TEAM of moderators assigned to it (more than 1 "jr moderator") We had "your model" until some time in 2010-2011, right around the dawn of Android, but it didn't work anymore due to the sheer growth of the site (both in number of fora and member base). So, as for your idea (the part about the Jr mod anyways)... been there, done that. As for the rest of your idea, about using "bad members" with a relaxed set of criteria to moderate the site.... how about no?
you said:
There are only about 100 moderators for the whole site. Given the sheer number of members which is in the millions now, 100 is an unacceptable number and there is no way they could maintain the forums with any level of efficiency or standards.

And what is, according to you anyways, an acceptable number? 1:1 ratio? 1:10000? I am sorry but the fora are extremely well maintained for the sheer number of people who frequent the site. Also, you do realize that having the moderator title is FAR more than just having the ability to ban people, right? It involves training, discussions, policy creation, resource management. This is a far more complex engine that you think it is. I seriously believe that you haven't got the faintest clue as to what you are saying/suggesting here as you haven't got a clue as to how the site actually works or how it has evolved over the last 5 years or so.
So, all things considered, it looks like #2 is something we already do.... so, we complied with one of the above points, which is what your petition was going for.
Thank you for playing.
PS. You posted in the wrong section. Why didn't you search for the correct section to post? It should have been posted in General, not Off Topic. Now I am simply going to open the floor to everyone (moderators and OT regulars alike), to do what you all do best with threads.....
I SUMMON CATS, SPIDEY, AND PONIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@egzthunder1 I respect your opinion but I still disagree with you. Things are still off and reporting doesn't seem to help so of course you will continue the way you have and that's fine. I do understand the system but it's flawed to me.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
Also I've had this in general and off topic after the other was deleted.
Oh for the love of god, why do people find it so hard to follow rules. I've been a member of xda for over 2 years and I've only had an issue with a recognized developer once and it was my own fault for being stupid. Is this really being brought up? C'mon now people... move on with the little incidental things

Yea and a little lighter fluid lol
And for the record I do notice a lot of people not bothering to search, I'll go out of my way mostly because I enjoy helping people and letting them know what I've learned by simply reading but some people take it to the extreme

Thank you all for proving that the rules only apply when they are convenient. As these moderators have allowed the flaming instead of moderating and deleting. I posted my opinion and I was trying to see if others felt the same. Even if you don't you've broken the very rules you agreed to uphold. Well done.

Actually I would dare say you do NOT understand the system, thus why it seems flawed to you. Given that we already do one of the things that you suggested we do, seems to me that you just plain don't understand how we do things.
XDA membership is not a right, nor is it mandated - it is a privilege and if you just can't understand it or don't like it, there's no one standing around you demanding that you stay on XDA.
If there is though, blink twice so we can alert the proper authorities.

Yes you are correct. People will always whinge, not follow rules, not search, etc. I will say though, good work going above and beyond to share what you have learned. That is what XDA is about.

I figure I learned it by reading what other people posted and those same people that helped me I can go to if I need help. Nothing like passing along what you've learned, it definitely helps others
