HD (Gameloft) gaming in Xperia Z? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys does this beast can handle all the HD games without any hiccups?
I know that Adreno 320 is powerful but the real doubt is that whether major publishers like Gameloft have any 1080p games supporting the full screen or will it upscale?
If it upscale, then the graphics wont be a beauty and i hate when after exiting resource hungry games, the launcher restarts!

Yeah, try this. Worked for me!

resolution issues were on gingerbread days. The only graphic fragmentation left now is on the driver which is mali, adreno, powerVR and tegra(which is rare now since the introduction of obb files). So pretty much android is sorting this issue now. Just learn to distinguish HD and non HD

[APP] Modern combat 2 and adreno 205

did anyone try this yet?
http://www.gameloft.com/android-games/modern-combat-2-black-pegasus/
its one of the best 3d games i ever played on android, my desire HD is running it blazing fast
however gameloft downgraded the graphics for the qualcomm version, it seems gameloft decided to give priority to the hummingbird devices
compared to the galaxy S version, it lacks reflections on the weapons, character shadows, a blur effect when hit by bullets and maybe more stuff
i don't understand why gameloft keep releasing the same version for both the old snapdragon and 2nd gen snapdragon devices
seeing how crazy fast the frame rate is running on the DHD, its obvious the adreno 205 can do much more

i have this game too its great, but gameloft have reasons for that, adreno cant shift half as many polygons as the powervr in the galaxy series, just look at ashpalt 5, even the DHD can only just run it with minimal slowdown, but the galaxy version looks amazing with reflections on the cars and more realistic tarmac, and powervr runs it with no hickups at all. i like my DHD though, if i wanted to play games that badly, id just fire up my xbox

i dont agree about asphalt 5 the dhd runs all gameloft games at very high frame rates, modern combat 2 is running at 60fps without a hiccup once
but i didnt know even asphalt is downgraded in terms of effects
my point is adreno 205 is quit capable and samsung figures about the power vr chipset are not accurate

its not just gameloft games, for example the galaxy s verson of NFS Shift looks amazing compared to the snapdragon version. it doesnt help that devs can't be arsed making better looking games for our version of adreno, they just make a snapdragon version. so ours our dumbed down so the desire and evo can play them
exactly my point, adreno was much improved with model 205, but i don't see gameloft bothering
by the way NFS can be hacked to play in high resolution
someone posted the hack a while ago in this forum, i tried it and it really works
maybe we can mix the galaxy S gameloft games with the snapdragon ones the same way

My Own LG 2x GLbenchmark VS Exynos

i only bought the lg 2x for 3 weeks, and this is sad to watch.
However, i don't see the point of the gpu being such powerful, since android does not have any thing to push the gpu at all besides benchmark. This is a good way to make myself feel better.
I would like to know is there difference between Tegra 2 cpu vs Exynos cpu at all?? besides Exynos gpu being so much more powerful than Tegra 2?
Thanks
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
oh thats just terrible
Now my O2x are completely useless - it will just stop functioning im sure
No wait - thats not right - whats happening, it still works ? My games still play, I can still read the news, I can still do all the things I did yesterday.
It's just a benchmark - does it really matter that much ?
Those are just numbers in my opinion.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
I might have wrong, but that benchmark is made for mobile gpus and tegra 2 is not like normal mobile gpus it's more like a desktop gpu. A eight core gpu can't be beaten by a quad core or?
Tegra is our one, probably futile, hope of future proofing our phones.
Sent from my LG-P990 using Tapatalk
Don't expect Tegra to lead benchmarks for a while until mobile graphics are more geared towards immediate mode rendering (Stuff more like PC graphics.). Everyone else uses Tile-based rendering. I believe NVidia did this to avoid changing the rendering (which changes the drivers even more and etc) once they reach "console-level" graphics. The Tegra 2 will excel in a few things. Don't expect it to be the best performer for now. Expect it to be a capable one.
Don't forget. SGS II is capped to 60fps and we won't know what it's truly capable of
I've seen several gaming videos and the tegra walks all over the Orion. I do agree that push for tegras are the last hope for a unified gaming platform and I think it will work. Nvidia has this backed and will see it through.
i am really sick of the fact every android phone has its own different games on each platform. same game cant be run on different android phones. this is stupid.
its one of the reasons i like Nvidia. they are trying to do something good here for once. you see all those samsung galaxy S2 hardware. but where all the games ? those same games i can play on nexus S. with good frames too. however with nvidia and tegra 2, the users are getting exclusive games that can take advantage of the hardware. thats nice for a change.
let the galaxy S2 owners have fun with there powerful phone on paper. at the end of the day. the Tegra 2 owners are the people who are getting the best looking games.
i am not saying i hate S2. because i will buy it as soon as i can. i love super amoled and the techs for the phone. but if i want a pure gaming phone. tegra 2 wins hands down. not because its the most powerful. but because there are exclusive games that take advantage of that GPU.

No their not, they're taking games already under development which Android users were going to see anyway regardless of nvidia's involvement and paying the developers off to make them exclusive titles, this is a bad thing as most Android users will lose out because of it.

this video shows at how the flash player performance is on web browsing watching a video and at this point watching an anime on both phones
so you can see that samsung galaxy with exynos and with 1.2ghz against lg2x nvidia tegra2 with 1ghz and lg optimus 2x seems for me faster for playing videos at this ..!i wanna only know if lg use stock 2.2.2 at this video against samsung galaxy s2 2.3.3 stock
lets compare those two videos and see that there are no differences between samsung s 2 and lg2x
and again dont forget...lg 2x has stock 2.2.2 rom
samsung galaxy s 2 has gingerbread 2.3.3 wich supposed to be faster..
think that when lg 2x will get official ginger 2.3.4 at this summer

True, and Nvidia is causing fragmentation by using their own compression formats. Afaik Mali supports the one and only standard format, but that don't help much when Nvidia is paying off devs to use their proprietary stuff. Yeah not very techical i know, but check out the SGS2 thread for more info.

Suitable for playing games?

My 15 year old nephew wants a mobile phone and I was thinking of suggesting this one, the mini. His basic use apart from phone calls will be playing games. Is the mini worth it? Can it play games well. He has a net connection at home and can download using WiFi so that is not an issue. Is the processor and GPU good enough? Can the memory store many games?
Apart from this there don't seem many choices in this price range for Android phones and I feel Android is the best choice.
If anyone has other phone suggestions, please let me know.

Not Optimized for tegra?

Why Asphalt 7 and Need For Speed Most Wanted's graphics are minimal? no blur no reflection....nothing...why? I'm reading the comments on market and averibody says that the game grate graphics but on my tegra 2 phone (optimus 2x) nothing special....these games are not optimized for tegra 2 powered devices or what?
As much as I hate to say this about our phone, the Optimus 2X among the dual cores holds one of the weakest graphics processors.
Sure, when it first came out it was a beast of a phone both in terms of CPU and GPU. However, once other brands caught up in the battle, it was quite clear that Tegra 2 was the least proficient in graphics.
Funny how you'd expect a company like Nvidia that specialises in GPU units to make the best GPUs in any area, especially smartphones. However, even Tegra 3, while still powerful in its own right, is still vastly overshadowed by the GPUs on the other quad core devices.
You probably see "Tegra optimised" because of Nvidia's marketing attempts to compensate for their weak processors. It's becoming increasingly common knowledge that in smartphones, Nvidia have been useless in upholding their reputation built from computer GPUs.

No, GS2 GPU is faster. The Tegra GPUs are actually a pain in the ass to code for if nVidia doesn't offer support. Devs have to split graphics processing onto 8 or 12 cores. The situation is quite similar with PS3 CPU, where devs also have to split graphics processing onto 7 different cores.

Gameloft doesn't make this game available on tegra 2 i mean their's no proper game files specifically for tegra 2 only unlike in adreno, mali and other gpu beside tegra they provide separate files for those gpu's so if you want to play great games on your o2x please first search on google for tegra 2 sd files of the game you want like bard's tale there is a specific file for our gpu and as expected its size is incredibly big 3gb
Our gpu is powerful if nvidia let the developers play with their codes i think users not only praise the developer but they praise for nvidia also for this creation in my own opinion

I"m confused by Electronic Arts.
I have an old single-core Motorola Defy + and on it that other racing game Fast5 from Gameloft runs superfluid with real-time reflections.
Now why in the hell does EA opt to choose for minimal graphics on my and other phones.
Imho it"S better to have an adjustible slider to have settings from low to max graphics on the new need for Speed on Android.
The same with Riptide by Vektor Unit.
Let people choose for themselfs dammit.

You guys are also jumping ship before they 4.3 rollout (that started today) that we all know vastly improves 3D gaming.. I have Zero problems. My TF700T was a lag machine on my games. Absolutely no problems whatsoever, on my new device..
Faster, Smoother, More Responsive
Android 4.3 builds on the performance improvements already included in Jelly Bean — vsync timing, triple buffering, reduced touch latency, CPU input boost, and hardware-accelerated 2D rendering — and adds new optimizations that make Android even faster.
For a graphics performance boost, the hardware-accelerated 2D renderer now optimizes the stream of drawing commands, transforming it into a more efficient GPU format by rearranging and merging draw operations. For multithreaded processing, the renderer can also now use multithreading across multiple CPU cores to perform certain tasks.
Android 4.3 also improves rendering for shapes and text. Shapes such as circles and rounded rectangles are now rendered at higher quality in a more efficient manner. Optimizations for text include increased performance when using multiple fonts or complex glyph sets (CJK), higher rendering quality when scaling text, and faster rendering of drop shadows.
Improved window buffer allocation results in a faster image buffer allocation for your apps, reducing the time taken to start rendering when you create a window.
For highest-performance graphics, Android 4.3 introduces support for OpenGL ES 3.0 and makes it accessible to apps through both framework and native APIs. On supported devices, the hardware accelerated 2D rendering engine takes advantage of OpenGL ES 3.0 to optimize texture management and increase gradient rendering fidelity.
OpenGL ES 3.0 for High-Performance Graphics
Android 4.3 introduces platform support for Khronos OpenGL ES 3.0, providing games and other apps with highest-performance 2D and 3D graphics capabilities on supported devices. You can take advantage of OpenGL ES 3.0 and related EGL extensions using either framework APIs or native API bindings through the Android Native Development Kit (NDK).
Key new functionality provided in OpenGL ES 3.0 includes acceleration of advanced visual effects, high quality ETC2/EAC texture compression as a standard feature, a new version of the GLSL ES shading language with integer and 32-bit floating point support, advanced texture rendering, and standardized texture size and render-buffer formats.
You can use the OpenGL ES 3.0 APIs to create highly complex, highly efficient graphics that run across a range of compatible Android devices, and you can support a single, standard texture-compression format across those devices.

I would like to see 4.3 on the TF701, but you're being overly optimistic about the improvements. A few new OpenGL features that might not even be supported by the Tegra4 aren't going to make all the 3d games suddenly double in framerate. So ya, Google added support for Open GL ES 3.0 in Android 4.3, but the Tegra4 doesn't support OpenGL ES 3.0 fully. Quoting anandtech: The big disappointment for many was that NVIDIA maintained the non-unified architecture of Tegra 3, and won't fully support OpenGL ES 3.0 with the T4's GPU. NVIDIA claims the architecture is better suited for the type of content that will be available on devices during the Tegra 4's reign.
I bet that games will have the exact same framerates on Android 4.3 as they do on 4.2.2, but I hope I'm wrong.
Can someone that isn't blindly optimistic about the reality of the TF701 do a comparison of FPS before & after the Android 4.3 update? Not like I care that much anymore since I'm shipping mine back today. Poor TF701. Or even just an FPS reading from any game on any version of Android? But maybe post it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47390158&postcount=9

One can't be blindly optimistic, when there's no need to be. My device is impeccable, especially when being compared to the albatross I owned last year, in the TF700T ,
Lastly, You extracted that quote from an article written in January, before they did an "architecture deep dive" a month later. What they've found is quite compelling and pretty much disproves their previous thought process. .
We finally have a competitive GPU architecture from NVIDIA. It’s hardly industry leading in terms of specs, but there’s a good amount of the 80mm^2 die dedicated towards pixel and vertex shading hardware. There's also a new L2 texture cache that helps improve overall bandwidth efficiency.
With Tegra 4, complaints about memory bandwidth can finally be thrown out the window. The Tegra 4 SoC features two 32-bit LPDDR3 memory interfaces, bringing it up to par with the competition.
For users today, the lack of OpenGL ES 3.0 support likely doesn’t matter - but it’ll matter more in a year or two when game developers start using OpenGL ES 3.0. NVIDIA is fully capable of building an OpenGL ES 3.0 enabled GPU, and I suspect the resistance here boils down to wanting to win performance comparisons today without making die size any larger than it needs to be.

My N7 FHD and Note 3 are great for most things I do, but I do all of my Android gaming on my TF700 since it has a HDMI port. I'm still debating in selling my TF700 and getting the TF701, or waiting to see if the N10 will not made by Asus. Even if the N10 is made my Asus, I very seriously doubt it will have a HDMI port. So if gaming of good on the TF701, then I'll be buying it! I'll be following this that closely to see Rudy everyone's thoughts are. Thanks!

Gaming is definitely better on this than the tf700. I hated gaming on the tf700 and the only way I got it better was to change resolution to 720p. There is however some frame rate drop but nothing close to the tf700. I'll post a video soon. I tried recording earlier but the Damn thing rebooted on me. I'm playing around with 3 tablets right now (701, note 3, HP slatebook) and so far the Hp slatebook x2 is my favorite device for gaming. It's the smoothest out of the 3. I posted a video of it here if you're interested.

Hi Guy,
I have a toshiba excite pro, some games is laggy because they use the screen native resolution to solve problem, I have created a script to change résolution to 1920x1080. All is better smooth.
For example, I have the resolution probleme with nfs most wanted. It was not laggy, but a little like slow motion
You can change resolution with the console
4.2.2 and lower
am display-size 1080x1920
4.3+
wm size 1080x1920

That's great to hear. I did the same with my tf700 and it made a huge difference. Unfortunately I've already returned my tf701 so I can't try it and didn't want to void warranty, but this would be a great alternative for others.
What I did though in some games that are tegra enhanced like dead trigger 2 is I just changed to high instead of ultra high and it too made a difference and it became smoother than the note 2014

Your opinion of very smooth seems different than mine (ours). Why don't you post some screenshots with FPS Meter running in MC4?

I just got mine yesterday and tried playing dead trigger 2 and it was a horrible experience. I wish Asus would have gone with the snapdragon 800 instead of the tetra 4.
Another thing I've noticed is lag while typing.
