[Q] Manual focus possible? - Galaxy Camera Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hiya,
I'm working on a project where we want to get as much remote control out of this camera as possible - however - it seems that using the camera GUI that comes with it, focus can not be manually changed.
Yes, you can prod your finger anywhere, and it'll focus on that point - but that's still autofocus at work. I need to be able to literally move the elements to and fro (as I presume it does when auto focussing) to change incrementally where the focus lands.
I think some people achieved this with the G1 some time ago, but my Google-Fu is lacking on this, I've as yet been able to find anything else out. Also this is an actual camera, not a baby surface mount thing attached to a phone as an afterthought - so I guess cracking this may be rather different to cracking it on another Samsung Galaxy product....
....Anyway, anyone got any ideas or leads on this?
Thanks!
Sara

I am in the same case
Have you find something?

Tilt camera very laggy in dim environment

I noticed that Tilt's camera is extremely laggy when using in dark/dim environment. From what I read it seems that it related to infamous crappy driver issue..
I know it's related to brightness, since when I turn the camera on a, say, lamp or a well-lit object - it speeds up by A LOT.
It seems that it's trying to process or compensate for darkness... Is there any way around it? Let it be dark, but hell - it's so slow it's unusable.
I have the same experience, but since the camera has no external flash or light source, you must ensure adequate lighting conditions to get the best functionality out of the camera. I think the auto focus and or the flicker adjustment get really jerky in low light conditions. I thought something was wrong until I figured this out. It takes pretty good pics, and great video considering its a phone once you get the lighting right.
compared to just about any other camera phone I've used, it requires a LOT of light. This thing is virtuallly unusable inside. I have never, ever, gotten the picture I want to get. If you are taking a picture of people you need to click the camera, say cheese, and still wait for the picture to take. No way to take candid shots as people have always moved by the time it snaps.
Forced to carry my real camera.
I know I know...it's a phone, not a camera. That's for sure...

I assume you didn't take the time to read the other 20 threads about the camera.
Go here:

I like using Sports mode rather than camera mode indoors. A burst of pics generally will yeild a couple that are tolerable.
I did search.
What I'm asking in this thread is whether somebody found a temporary workaround for this problem, like increasing brightness, turning off some kind of "low light compensation" in the registry or something of that nature.
The answer is YES. It is inside another thread. I dont recall the settings, but indeed there are options to adjust, new cameras to install. They are just in different threads that are already established and waiting on people with questions to explore, read and learn from.
Well, I'll run another search and dig through pages of posts.. =)
Try the Google search of this site as apposed to the "search" option on the forums. Google is easier to preview and decide how relevant the search return is. Use more than one search term. If you are looking for a solution to Wi-Fi, search for Wi-Fi, WiFi or wireless router, etc....
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all
Just be thankful there are pages of information here. Some of those "pages" are repetitive threads like "How do I".... or "Does anyone know what...." if there weren't so many repetitive threads, there wouldn't be so many pages to search through. Know what I'm saying?
Yup, I run my own forum and I know what you mean.
Anyway, no sense arguing, I'll see what I can find. You're right about one thing - there's lots of info here.
Good luck DarkDrvr. I've read a lot here and tried several things. Not much success for me on the camera. Improvment, yes, worth a darn, no.
I'm hoping that, as they said, the video drivers that someone may eventually come out with help the camera too.
Since suggesting use of the Sports mode rather than the camra mode, I've come to realize that the difference that I'm seeing may more be the result of the udated camera version I'm running (version 5.04 build 29195). See this thread for info:

found a fix
turn on the camera.. then hit the power button. the screen will go black. wait like 5-10secs. hit the power button again and it tricks the camera to turn off the low-light compensation. after that you should be able to shoot away. found it here

Is anyone working on a fix for the appalling 8.9 touchscreen sensitivity?

I know that there is the build prop "fix" which helps slightly (changing one of the values from the default 150 to 300 - can't remember which but you'll find it with a Google around). However, I was wondering if anyone is working on the touchscreen of the 8.9, or has any ideas on improving response sufficiently so that handwriting is feasible.
It seems that there is some kind of filter that disregards small movements - you can demo this but putting your finger down on the desktop and wiggling it from left to right about 2mm or so. I'd expect to see the screen "wiggle" slightly, part scrolling from left to right. Instead after a few seconds it responds as if you have held your finger down motionless. This is the issue that makes handwriting impossible.
On the 10.1 there is the app and discussion thread TouchScreenTune which fixes all of this. I have tried it on my 8.9 but no joy - but I can't imagine there is much in the way of difference between the two devices, and reckon that the 10.1 fixes could easily be applied to the 8.9 if someone with a bit of knowledge applied themselves (that's not me, unfortunately)

I think we have to contact the dev of touchscreentune and get him on board of this since both devices is kinda similar.

i sent him a mail. here are the responses:
it seems unlikely:
- I don't have the device
- it uses different touch controller than 10.1
- kernel doesn't support configurable parameters for 8.9

I'm speaking about driver provided for controller used in 8.9, it has
no possibility to change configuration. And the firmware of the
controller is a binary blob with no documentation.

looks like we are unlucky
being very upset with this problem i started poking around the build.prop
it might be placebo but i feel that when this is added:
Code:
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=300
it gets a little more responsive. still not what i want it to be but better than before.
Try Touchscreen booster
It seems to have helped mine.
thanks. seems a little more responsive.
here is the apk if anybody else was wondering:

My 8.9 LTE is super sensative, probbly the most I have seen on any android tab.
I can just barely graze my screen with rhe back of my fingernail and it even picks that up.
Compared to my roomates ASUS Transformer Prime, wo cant even use his fingernail unless he really jams it down.
iinteresting but im on the tegra version which aparently has completely different hardware
hi everybody
I'd like to try to find some answer to the annoying problem of the touch filtering.
I've been searching around the internet for days, I've also asked the author of TST but with no luck till now.
Is there anybody that knows or can address me to how this problem can be solved? I don't think it's just a hardware problem, but a software one.
I'm also willingly to write to Samsung directly, so wish me good luck.
If I'm not gonna find a way to do this in a couple of weeks, I'm quite sure I'm gonna sell this beautiful black useless brick to an iPad.

that's been the first thing I did, but the improvements it brings are very light.
Does the tablet really have different hardware between the wifi and the LTE version? (at least regarding the screen digitizer)

Hmm, is it really a sensitivity issue? If I swipe first then wiggle like you mention, the screen will wiggle slightly. It sounds like there is a threshold to switch from holding the finger down motionless, to scrolling from left to right.
Perhaps a threshold setting (if available) is sufficient to overcome this?
I'm noticing the samething. When I first saw this thread I thought everyone was crazy but after trying to type large amounts of text I've found it incredibly unresponsive in landscape mode (though portrait feels perfect!). I'm eagerly waiting for the official ICS update as in hoping it'll fix some of these issues.
It would be nice if they at least updated us to 3.2.

I have Samsung 3.2 OTA update and it really changes nothing.
Btw no answer yet from Samsung, and yes, the problem is just about some sort of accidental touch filter

[Q] GC-100 Wobble/Stability after 4.1.2 upgrade?

Just wondering if anyone had stability issues with the lens/display from camera after an upgrade? there seemed to be a Camera firmware upgrade as well at the same time? since then the lens seems to be hunting to focus .. you can hear the motor/lens trying to do some work - going into manual mode and switching off stability control makes things better but auto-mode certainly has an issue
I have also noticed that the auto focus is not working as well as before the update to 4.1.2. I had quite a few situations in which it refuses to focus in good light conditions. And I could not find a good workaround for this beside a reboot.

is there any way of easily regressing back to 4.1.1.... Does samsung know there is a bug/fault - couldnt find a way of reporting it to them unless its via their warantee programme?

Pixel 4 XL Front camera distortion and not sharp

I've just received the phone and I'm noticing a LOT of distortion, specially when holding the phone vertically and close to my face.
There's some kind of distortion fix going, but it looks like it's optimized for landscape front facing pictures, and when you hold the phone at the maximum stretch of your arm.
When I open Instagram front camera (or I switch from the back camera to front), my face looks good for about a second, but then there's some distortion thing going on, some distortion animation like flubber that makes my face look completely distorted. It's like a squishing
Here they talk about it: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/21077564?hl=en
This also happens for videocalls, so I'll always look bad in videocalls because in a videocall you hold the phone vertically and close to your face and this distortion fix makes you look so bad.
Is there any way to disable this distortion fix and enable it just for landscape pictures and from far?
I believe what's happening here is that the distortion fix is optimized for landscape full arm stretch pictures and not for videocalls where it's portrait and zoomed in
That's really interesting... I remember hearing about some real-time perspective fixing with the camera but I take maybe one selfie per decade, so I don't really pay attention to it. But now that I'm looking at it, if I significantly change the camera mode, I can see it making a pincushion adjustment around my eyes. It happens outside of the default camera app as well, so it must be a low level thing affecting it. I can only imagine what it might be doing to your face when not working correctly.
I would imagine that to do perspective fixing like this, it would need to use some sort of method to determine depth. Is this done by a separate sensor? Is it possible you have some sort of screen protector or other thing obscuring the sensor array on the top of the phone? I can't decide if the phone is using only depth data or if it possibly is using face detection and would only happen for certain people where that detection is bad. I also can't decide if this is more hardware or software controlled.

It's definitely a low level thing

When I just physically rotate the phone, I can see it changing the applied adjustments shortly after it stops moving. I wonder if your phone is incapable of properly detecting the orientation in terms of the camera and never applies the portrait adjustments. A faulty accelerometer? Though that would suggest that it has multiple and the camera and OS level ones are different? I assume you don't have issues with the OS not seeing you switch orientation.
Given how rare this issue sounds, it might require replacing the phone if there are no methods of altering the behavior. But it doesn't sound like Google is acknowledging the issue either. Though it would be hard for them to ignore picture/video evidence.

Mine is doing that too, but I believe whats' happening is that it's physically impossible to optimize it good for portrait just because of how is the lense built.
I don't think it's impossible... I feel like mine does it just fine. If I wasn't paying real good attention, I wouldn't know anything was actually happening. Or are you saying that when it is working properly, it would still be below your standards? Considering how minute the adjustment is for me, I can't imagine it bothering anyone. So my assumption is your specific phone is doing it wrong somehow.

It could be maybe because I'm comparing it side by side to my OnePlus 7 Pro?
I'm checking now the pictures on my computer side by side, and when it's vertical selfie, then the distortion compensation doesn't work that much good as when it's horizontal (and arm full stretched, then it's perfect)
Okay, maybe it's a subtle thing that I don't have an eye for. Your post made it sound really pronounced, so maybe I was expecting more.
I tried comparing with my Note5, but I couldn't see much of a difference. Are you supposed to see the difference in viewfinder mode, or only in processed photos?

It's so pronounced if you want to take a closeup portrait selfie.
Less pronounced when taking a full stretch arm portrait selfie
And almost no effect when taking a full stretch arm landscape selfie
The issue here is on apps like instagram (it's zoomed in and always vertical) or videocalls.
Both in the viewfinder and final file

Poor camera or do settings need to be adjusted?

Would really appreciate any tips that anyone has utilised to improve the camera settings (as its the one thing bugging me on an otherwise brilliant phone).
I was trying to add something to an Instagram story earlier via the camera on Instagram and everytime I took the picture, the actual shot would move slightly each time and cause the picture to blur (despite repeated attempts and me holding the camera dead still). It was like the camera was being nudged each time I pressed to take a picture. I used the stock camera (default settings) at the weekend and found the experience to be quite mediocre. A few came out quite well but generally they seemed to be a bit blurry or appear as though my dog was moving (when he was actually just sitting still).
I have a few Youtube vids saved to watch from. Another thread that have tips on how to get the best out of Photo Pro so will check those out later when I have time. I'm not a camera expert and Photo Pro seemed a bit overwhelming with all the options but happy to give it a go.
From what I have seen and read it seems the phone is exceptional in the pro app with lots of adjustment if required however the auto mode is a just ok.
It's a shame as clearly the potential is there and many people still want a great camera they can open up and shoot a decent picture without all the messing about.
Just don't know why they haven't improved this. There are lots of fans who like other aspects of a Sony phone but just don't want the messing about with the camera. It's a 'nice to have option' but I also want decent reliable results straight off the bat.
