It doesn't have wireless charging but the dock that comes free with the phone in some areas doesn't need to plug into the phone and must do it wirelessly or via pins just beneath the backing I suppose

There are 2 contacts on the left hand side of the phone which get used with the dock. They are power only - not USB or HDMI. There is *no* wireless charging in this phone.

Nokias wireless charger works with all phones that have NFC, looks like i will be buying that then!

From what I've seen wireless charging is presently a bit dodgy anyway, perhaps Sony are just waiting for the tech to settle down a bit before introducing it. I don't think I'll be going for wireless charging with my N4 any time soon.

I don't think so. It has NFC so that you can launch a task when you put your phone to charge, but it's still based on the Qi wireless charging spec which means the phone has to be compatible too.

just looked in to it, sorry your right, i had read somewere without looking it up. My bad!

@OP: Why would you want wireless charging in the first place? It's just a gimmick it might be nice to have but, when you don't have it you won't miss it either way.
Same with 3d also a gimmick, we can live perfectly without 3d movies etc. Even though 3d movies can be quite nice to see.

wireless charging is not comfortable for daily uses

I had a Droid DNA and hated the wireless charging. For one you have to pay upwards of $25-$50 for a wireless charging pad, charging takes several times longer, the phone/battery get hot while using it, which will probably lead to shortened battery life, and it's not like you can use your phone while wireless charging since if it moves more than a few millimeters off the pad it stops, versus wired where you are limited only to the length of the wire.

Isnt wireless charging jsut putting the phone on a "dock"? Like my cordless phone? or the old nokia's where u had to put it on a charging dock? Ppl behave as those it is sending microwaves to your phone within a certain radius and the phone magically charges...and if it were like that I would be afraid of nuking my insides lol

Exactly my thought. It's wireless, but you have to put your phone on a mat... i really prefer putting my phone on a dock, and the one for Xperia Z is very good because there is no "port" that might go loose with time, just two metal pins that are touching the charger pins.

For those in doubt - here is the dock Sony will release to go with this phone - Not quite wireless charging but nearly. Having seen this it has convinced me to get the phone - the thought of fiddling with the port covers in the dark every night to conect the charger was putting me off (my gf goes to bed before me so I can't put the light on).

Wireless Charging with the EXTENDED Battery - Solved

If you're impatient like me, here's a DIY $13 mod I did to make the extended battery wireless charging enabled. Presumably works on all charging mats as the whole idea behind Qi is a universal standard.
http://uselesspuzzles.blogspot.com/2011/09/droid-bionic-optimizations-extended-bat.html
Photos and videos at the bottom of the post.
Here's the main video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR7egtQl-Zg
I moved the coil a little bit so the connection was more secure after the video. Works without issue.
I bought like 5 touchstones so I can have one in my home office, office office, bedroom, living room, etc.
Do you know if the touchstone works with the VZW inductive charging back for the standard battery?

honestly i havent really read into the different technologies used... so no idea
my guess is if it did work it would probably not be as good an experience as the magnets are probably not placed in the same alignment (so the phone won't know exactly where to attach giving a sub-optimal placement)
Wow
Looks pretty nice, I happened to have the soldering supplies and wire might do this myself. How is the charging time as I can't find the output for the touchstones anywhere. Would you still recommend it after having it for a while now?
nah don't do it
it has to be perfectly aligned to charge properly- from what i've read the real bionic backplate works even through cases-
i'd say wait for a better version that is less finicky
or make one with the bionic reg. battery wireless charging door like i plan to

I'd like that. I tried my bionic with the inductive charging door on the touchstone, and I couldn't get it to work, so this mod would be great. I hate the LG charging mat for the bionic
Do you know if this was a tight squeeze in the extended battery door? Also, does this mean you cannot take the door off anymore?
Hey guys, i know older post...has anyone done this with the reg battery?
If so, what kind of chargign times are u getting? ALso, are u usign the Palm mat or some other mat.
My intention is to use this with teh standard battery, and battery cover, so i can still use gel case
i'm still waiting for the long promised true wireless charging where the same towers that supply us our signal also charge our phones.
it's barbaric that we're still having to plug in somewhere to charge. what century is this anyway !!?!?

I did this using the stock charging cover for the bionic.
It works perfect but you need a Qi compatible pad. After searching I found one on ebay for 35 bucks. The only problem is it makes removing the battery difficult. My next project is to see if I can make the mod so it works just like the production cover.

Non removable battery

I'm surprised to see not much talk of this, as for me it's the biggest hang up with this awesome device (second is no sd slot). I find it extremely handy to have a removable battery because 1) I don't have to worry about being super careful about how I treat the battery as replacements are usually fairly cheap and 2) it opens up the possibility of larger 3rd party batteries. What's everyone's thoughts on this?
Sent from my 3VO
Oh there has been PLENTY of talk about this.
That's the trend, removal batteries are going bye bye. Whether it's removal or not, the important question is whether or not it is possible at all to get at the battery slot. Have to watch a few tear down videos.
The iPhone 4/4s didn't have a removable battery either per say... yet you could easily do it yourself.

this is a make or break issue for me aswell. Will the wireless charging orb hold a charge so I can put it in my bag when im travelling and connect it with n4 without the need for any sockets?
if not are there any third party softwares that can allow something small which can recharge battery without any connections?

No, the inductive charger must be plugged into the wall. The only benefit of an inductive charger is not having to make any physical connection to the phone every time you charge.

We will have to see what real life battery life is like.

Nothing mentioned in all the fancy features about awesome battery life....
Although not being able to remove the battery is annoying, I say introducing inductive charging to the Nexus line makes up for some of it.
too bad you still have to plug it in to transfer info to a computer. For that, I like the lightning port. Micro usb is annoying and so so fragile.

This is a huge concern for me as well. Spare batteries are cheap and you never have to worry about your phone dying.
However, the price is too good to pass up considering how it looks and the amazing specs it has.
Not to mention, on jellybean, my phones battery life has been phenomenal.

Wireless Qi Charging base

So I have been doing a lot of looking and this is my first phone with Wireless/Qi charging. Here is what I found so far. What is everyones experience, favorites, and ones to avoid? Two of the main issues Ive seen are, how finicky is the charger on where you place the phone. And does it trickle charge. If it "turns off" at 100%, your phone will start to discharge and youll wake up at 90%.
LG-WCP-300 - seems a little small. Would love a slab type that I can just plop my phone down and hot worry it'll tip over because I put it too far to one side. It charges at 1.8 which is nice (I think per androidcentral, the power cord is 1.8, but the base drops it down to 1A, oh well)
http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-WCP-300-Wireless-Charging/dp/B00C6VP03I/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1379117720&sr=1-1&keywords=lg+wireless+charger
Nokia DT-90 - some say you have to get it in that "sweet" spot, which is annoying when you are wanting to just put it down and go to sleep.

Panasonic Qi Charging Pad QE-TM101-K - doesnt trickle charge. So when it gets to 100...it turns off, then when your phone gets to ~95% it turns back on and then on and then off...and so on...no good. Although the size and ability to put it ANYWHERE and know itll start charging it perfect.

I got the Nokia for my G2 based on all the reviews. No sweet spot needed so far. I just basically place the phone on the plate and it charges.
Went with the Nokia as well.Works fine.
I like the devices offered by TYLT - not only the QI charger due to its ability to serve as a table stand while charging the phone, but also the power plant and the USB connector cables are interesting. The design is nice, too. Has anyone recognized this brand and used their products?

I got it yesterday and it seems to charge as fast as when connecting via USB normally. However the magnet is pretty weak so whenever moving the tablet it wants to come off by the weight of the usb-cable. It is best used laying on a flat surface.
actually I would prever a tiny magnetic adapter for QI so I can attack the magnetic and rely it on the pad and charge.
Nexus 7 and Samsung already Qi, I would charge all my devices Qi this way!

Magnetic charging strips

The S5 is a great looking phone, spec wise. Nothing is dramatically different over the S4, other than Waterproof, fingerprint and a couple other sensors. But everything is an upgrade in some way.
Except for ease of charging.
Yes, for those of us who like to get everything done with one click, one hand, one motion, one something.... the S5 has taken a step back in docking/charging capabilities.
While the USB 3.0 offers *faster* charging to some degree, we are now obstructed from ease of use by the very thing that makes this phone *really special* and unique. Waterproofing. Yep, those dang "doors" that seal up the USB port have added "one more" step. This time, one more step in the form of attaching a USB cable or docking our phones. I myself paid $75 for a killer dock that gave me one-handed, one motion docking that offers charging. I just plop my S4 phone down and it's secured and charging right away (Craigsdocks Dock).
Most of you probably don't care about this "one extra step". So those are the folks who will step into this thread and participate the most, because they don't care and think it's stupid that other people care. lol
But for you "one step" people out there like myself, who are avidly into Tasker automation, modifying the Quick Settings panel and want the fastest launcher with coolest widgets possible.... YOU will understand what I'm talking about when I say the S6 *NEEDS* to have Magnetic Docking Pins.
And I cannot believe Samsung has not only locked the bootloader on us USA citizens, but they have also not given this phone some semblance of ease of use when it comes to Car Docks and other types of docks, for everyone in the entire world.
Ugh, shame on you, Samsung. Your lack of foresight is amazing. Because we all know the S6 will have Magnetic Docking Pins and thus, every single one of us will pay to upgrade our phones once again, next year.
Oh, you might ask why Magnetic Pin charging is better than wireless charging?
Well that's because it charges twice as fast. Which is very important when your screen is set to 100% brightness, Pandora is streaming over Bluetooth and GPS is wildly trying to re-route me every few seconds. All while I'm on a 25% charge and have no plans to be anywhere near a charger for the next 24 hours after I get out of my car.
I only use the USB 3.0 port when I really need to charge my phone very fast. Otherwise, I always use wireless charging.
Maybe the phone isn't for you..... The beauty of Android is that you can get whatever manufacturer you like to sort your hardware needs.
