[Q] Can't receive MMS - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About a week or so ago maybe, it started that I can't receive MMS messages. I can't figure it out for the life of me. I can send them fine, but if someone sends me a picture in an MMS, I don't receive it. No errors, no picture, no notification of it, nothing. But if they send it to my mms address ([email protected]), then I'll get it.
I normally use the default messaging app that comes with android, but I tried a third party app (the go one) and same problem. This is all on a Samsung Captivate currently running Slim Bean 3.1.0 (Android 4.1.2). I want to say the problem started when I went from Slim Bean 2.4 to 4.1 rc1, but I'm not really sure if it started then or not. Since then, I've deleted the caches and formatted and all and put the latest Official Slim Bean release on here and the problem persists. Straight Talk (my provider) is pretty much useless for support. I have quadruple checked my APN settings and they are all correct.
Any ideas?

Good Morning! I had this same problem of not being able to receive MMS. I had frozen the default messaging app because I use Go Messaging. I finally figured out that Go Messaging (and maybe other replacements) relies on the default messaging app to download MMS. I have been receiving MMS, now that I leave the default messaging app unfrozen.
Good luck!

That's not really the problem here. I dunno what is though.

sounds like some of your APN settings for mms could be messed up. are you on AT&T or another carrier?
if at&t, here are a couple of screen shots of my working settings

I don't know straight talk but it seems odd that MMSC still has a Cingular host.

Okay, here's a little bit more of some extra info. I'm just noticing this, but when I send something, it's shrinking the pictures. I sent a screenshot to my email last night and it's shrunk...

That's because there's a maximum size that can be sent (often app dependant) using our androids. Most likely can be changed in the app's settings or by using another app.

I had this problem while upgrading my daughters fascinate. I goofed up the flash along the way and lived without MMS. I called Verizon. Did a manual upgrade successfully and still no mms. I went back to GB stock via Odin for another reason and checked MMS for the hell of it. It worked. I had to flash the Pit file, the tar all in one package together and viola! MMS. Good luck

It didn't used to do it. This is new. It wouldn't let me send large files, but it didn't reduce quality and/or shrink them either.
I'm wondering if I should attempt getting the thing back to stock, but I really am not sure how to do it. I found a thread here, but I'm still confused really, lol. And 2.3 seems like a pretty big downgrade from 4.1
There has got to be a setting or file or something somewhere that's causing this. Or maybe something missing, I dunno. I wish now I would've just left the damn thing using slimbean 2.4 and not upgraded it. It was all fine till then, except for Google's retarded f'ing Play store telling me apps wouldn't work when I knew better...

Going back to stock is fairly easy, just grab Odin KK4 without bootloaders (stickied in the Dev section).
But Imo, go ahead and give another ROM a shot if that one doesn't satisfy you.

It's just going to take some time and patience. Learn how to Odin. Get all of the necessary files and watch some tutorials. But above all else don't panic. You won't be able to focus on what you are doing and that's what needs to happen for you to get your phone in order. Getting back to stock is really easy. You'll be fine. Go on YouTube for video instructions.

Vanilla MMS for NON-ROOTED

This is for us 2.1 leakers that want a little fun. I've finally figured out, with the help of jonasl, how to get this Vanilla MMS app to install on a NON-ROOTED phone. Just download the file, put it on the SD card, install it using Astro or any other file manager, and you're good to go.
NOTE: The only problem I've come across so far, is that when someone sends you a message, you get ONE notification, but when you go and view the thread or conversation, TWO messages appear in the thread from that person. The same message just shows up twice. Not exactly sure why and how to fix it, so I guess we have to deal with that for now until I figure out a way to fix it.

Download: Mmz.apk
Please DONATE if you love this.
I second this. I want the texting interface from Vanilla over the Sense messaging.
Please hook us up. Searching got me nothing.
Here is a modded Vanilla Mms.apk but you need root: http://www.droid-life.com/2010/04/15/download-new-mms-apk-with-custom-settings/
That's the point. I want someone to mod it, or recreate it using a different name for the app and all so it will install like any other replacement like Handcent.
WITHOUT root.
Here, try this. I installed this .apk and it worked for me, though I'm root. Though it's an .apk so it shouldn't matter.
Tell me if it works for you too.

Nope no work
Doesn't work for me either with the newest Rooted Leak (v4?).
The point is, these apk's don't work if you're not rooted. It thinks you're replacing the standard MMS app. I was wanting someone to mod it or port it so it installs like Handcent would as a side app, not one to replace the original. It would have to be a different name and all.
Is it any different than the Mail app? I was able to replace that with the .apk provided on this forum.
I guess it is. I don't know. All I know is it won't install. And I'm guessing it's because it's got the same package name as HTC stock messaging. The package name just needs to be changed slightly so that it will install.
I see. Something the dev needs to do or something a novice just has to simply edit? Someone told me this thing would work if I just renamed it from ".zip" to ".apk." It didn't, but is it something along those lines?
I'll give you an example. In the thread about the modded version of the HTC_IME keyboard, a couple of months ago I tried to install it on an unrooted Eris and it wouldn't. I assumed it wouldn't because the actual keyboard on the Eris is already named HTC_IME so it only gave the option to uninstall (which isn't possible without root) or launch.
Recently, he updated it, and one of the updates said "Changed the package name to my own." Now, I tried it again, and it installs on the Eris and works perfectly. This is what I am trying to do with this MMS app. I want to take the Vanilla MMS app, and change the package name so it will install on an unrooted Eris alongside the stock messaging app, sorta like Handcent or Chomp does.
Basically I need to know how to change the package name, which I don't know how to do without source files to the app.
Now I see. Damn. I do secretly wish I was rooted and running Vanilla (or just bought a Droid in the first place ) so I'm really hoping to get the lock screen and Messaging app from stock Android on my non-rooted Eris. Either that, or they root the official 2.1 and we all rejoice.
I posted a thread for help on this.. Sorry.. Should have asked here first..
I tried the adb remount command.. and get this error
"adb remount operation not permitted"
Also.. so luck trying Astro File manager to copy/move to system/app
I am rooted and currently using GrdLocks VanillaDroid ROM
Any help would be appreciated.. thanks
This is actually a thread about trying to get the Vanilla MMS app to work and install on a non-rooted phone. And I've actually FINALLY figured out how. Everyone go look at the top of the thread.
Came here looking for an update... Great work! Carry on!
First off thank you for sharing. changed the name installed with htc sync and set as default messangr. works like a charm however i made a shortcut for it but it automatically morphs back to the original message icon. but when i click on it its the vanilla messanger? not a biggie i just preferred the green icon. any way to fix this easily.
?
any progress?
I know this is kinda old news but I am wanting to do the same thing for my Incredible but with the froyo mms.apk which I have extracted.. could you tell me what you did to make this work. I am like you I don't care to replace the stock just add the better vanilla mms Was it as easy as renaming the apk or is there more to it. any help is appreciated I am curious and interested in learning more things like this.
HI all, i know a little late but better than never i am using G.Tab and the Messaging 1.0 came with it is good but lack of a message counter that tracks your character typed (160 characters counter).
that is why i have to use chompSMS (uninstalled) and handcent (better than chomp imho). problem is whenever i receive a sms, clicking on the notification area, will bring me a choice of reading via handcent or messaging 1.0, which i always choose handcent. and after reading, i always have to go back to the notification area to clear the leftover icon.
does this vanilla has a character typed counter? if so, i really would like to use it on SGT. has anyone tried on SGT?

Samsung Email missing in JPC

Hey
I posted this in the general section but couldn't get an answer.
Basically I flashed and rooted JPC to my Bell Vibrant via ODIN, but I've lost the Samsung Email app, which IMO is the best mail app I've used on android.
Does anyone have the Samsung mail app? ANy way you could share it with me?
I've tried k9, maildroid, stock email and they all are incredibly unreliable or slow.
Thanks very much
I've yet to see something called Samsung Mail. Wasn't present in JM3, JM5 or JM6
It was deffinitely there in JG9 when I got my phone. I guess it basically tied into SocialHub, but it was pretty reliable and had a unified inbox.
Such App exists?
Whenever people mentioned I thought it was the normal Email app
the normal mail app has a unified inbox. there's one apk, i think it's social hub, that showed mail + messages at the same time but that one just started the normal mail app

Yeah, but the normal mail app is quite abysmal. Mail is one thing Android is noticeably weak at.
The samsung email app I used was deffinitely different to the mail app. it's unified inbox and account switching was far better and it downloaded mail really fast.
Does anyone know where I can download the Bell JG9 firmware? Maybe i can extract the apk from it?
I've posted this question as well and have not received an answer. I have not been able to locate a sys file that would indicate that it is responsible for the Samsung Email. Either way, UGJH2 has it included so use that as unless you backed up JG9 I'm not aware of it being publicly available.

Sweet. I'll try that then and report back. At least I'm not crazy regarding it's existence.
How do I extract an apk from a firmware? I'm totally clueless...sorry
use Root Explorer to view /system/app, should be in there but the name might be different from what's shown in the app.
If you find it I'd be interested in having a look. Or can someone post a screenshot at least?

But that would require me to flash back to JH2 from JPC, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to flash back?
If I make a backup using clockwork, can I just flash that back, instead of having to do the whole JPC+root process?
you can also mount factory.rfs as loop device and then just get the apk from it
was just playing with some stuff and found this in the JH2 image: http://www.multiupload.com/PKYK17W8M3

Wonder why only the Bell phones got the Smasung email app. So weird.
So I had to restore my JPC rom. This time however, samsung email was there. I'll dig around and try and find the apk.
In the meantime I took some screenshots. Just gmail accounts right now, since my schools IMAP server is down.

WORKING! [MAY 6] Social Hub/Hotmail email/ IM deodexed!! WORKING!!

With the help of user cappysw10 for the deodexing, i have the Samsung Email, Samsung IM, and Social Hub. Social hub needed to be deodexed for custom roms. These programs were given to us by samsung and just needed to be adjusted to run on these custom roms, this should not be considered warez
in case you aren't familiar with what this adds to your phone and why i am sharing this,
the Samsung Email program handles multiple email accounts including yahoo, Gmail but most importantly adds HOTMAIL email with push notifications and marks things read!
the IM adds Hotmail, yahoo, gmail Messenger, AND adds hotmail SNS syncing to your contacts and shows their online status and information in your contact list when you join the contact, much like the facebook/skype/gmail sns additions but for hotmail.
Social Hub brings the above email, IM, TXT and facebook! all into one convenient place.

unfortunately my apping knowlege is very limited, as stated above someone else deodexed, i just found the newest version i could and tore it out of the rogers 2.2 stock rom.

Serendipity is 2.2.1 I'm pretty sure, jpy based

No joy Serendipity 5.9, dunno why. Going back to Cognition!
Seven must be a Rogers thing, won't work on Cog.
I'm also getting the "in progress" thing for 5 minutes and then it tells me I'm out of time. I'm on Cog 3.04
I'd love if you could get this working, it would mean the world!
Is this any different than the one that's included in JPY? Because I have that sitting on my hard drive, and can't think of a reason for that one not to work.
Sent from my Captivate.
notr sure about the JPY but I get the same "in progress" with Serendipity 5.11
Looking through the logs I see (removed my imei and msisdn):
Code:
[Z7ServicePointDiscoverer]POS query = http://gsd.fra.samsungsocialhub.com/gsd/getPos?secureKey=m33tch33z3n0Bn&imei=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx&mnc=410&mcc=310&msisdn=xxxxxxxxxxx&maker=Samsung&model=SAMSUNG-SGH-I897&version=23.41.4242.3
When I put that into browser, with my data still in place, I get a return of:
Point of service not found
So I think that it's a service of Rogers as it seems to check your imei and sd card info.
Has anyone thought of modding the files to have a lighter background (as opposed to the black one) for Samsung Mail?
I managed to get all the apps installed (Samsung Mail, Samsung IM, Social Hub) and all are working perfectly and everything is in sync and all my accounts (1 Exchange, 2 Gmail and 1 Hotmail) are being pushed in real-time to my device and Social/IM accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Windows Live Messenger and Gtalk) are all synched with my contacts through SNS and I love it
My only qualm is that I would like a lighter background as an option (I really don't know why but after modding and using Gmail with a lighter background on my HTC Legend I've come to like the look)
wow! it works for you too NICE... i was thinking there was a regional problem..
unfortunatly after it not working initially for a few people it hasnt been very popular or worth theming. however im about to flash to stock to get the updated versions and get it deodexed hopefully....
WAIT!! FOUND the new versions.... Added to OP..

[Q] AT&T Visual Voicemail. Anyone get it working?

I'm unable to find AT&T VVM in the Google Play Store which I assumed to mean it wasn't compatible. I manually found a link to it and sure enough it says it's not compatible with my device and wouldn't let me install it.
I made sure my older S3 was up to date and pulled the APK off that and put it on my N6. It installs just fine and seems to start the setup process OK too. It asks me to call my VM to activate it, it auto calls my VM for me and then when I close out of the call I see the VVM app says its activating but after a bit it says it was unable to activate and to check my connection etc and asks if I want to call my VM to try again.
Someone made a post about no Verizon VVM either and I made the comment same on AT&T. Someone had replied in that thread with the following:

Thanks!
Did you try turning off wifi before the setup? I've seen some say they have had to in the past, that only cellular activation would actually work. In any event, it works great for me...

Used same apk as you, on LTE, worked fine for me on my unlocked Nexus 6.
Still not working.
I just spent the last 30 minutes on the phone with AT&T trying to figure out if there is a server side issue but they had to escalate the case.
Funny side note, the AT&T tech support guy tried to remote into my phone using their AT&T remote access app but I was unable to open the page to install it because the phone is not carrier locked. Apparently per the tech, the app only loads on carrier locked phones. He put me on hold while he went to talk to his supervisor and who said yeah won't work on N6's, they are not carrier locked.
During the process I let it slip out that the phone was unlocked, rooted and decrypted. Shouldn't be an issue warrant wise or insurance wise if ever needed should it? They don't keep track of that stuff I assume?
using app version 2.7.2.1
transferred app and setttings using helium from my nexus 5
works with no issues
Works fine for me. Worked fine on my T-Mobile sourced Nexus 5 and Play Store Nexus 4 as well. I don't think it is available on the Play Store though.
I was able to download the APK and just installed it directly. Opened it up just fine and set it up as normal (i turned wifi off as I always do for setup)
Specifically I installed version 2.10.1.27, got it at the link below
Visual Voice Mail Topic
Still not working and I'm running down the list of APK's at that link. I just keep getting what you see in the picture below.

OK I just tried ALL of the AT&T VVM apk's on that thread and they all gave the same error.
I am getting a different error. When I search up the application in the play store it says its not compatible with my device (AT&T Nexus 6 (Motorola). Anyone else seen that? Happened to a game or two as well.
I just installed the one in your link and it worked fine. Bone stock N6. Anyone have an apk for latest version that includes the sensor setting to turn off screen when phone is brought up to your ear?
Yeah I don't think it's been int he Playstore for Nexus users for a LONG time for some reason. That is why people pull the APK and put it in that XDA thread mentioned in this thread, because people need it and can't get it from the Playstore.
Still haven't gotten this working yet.
Worked fine here
Still not working today either! =(

I've used Google Voice for VVM ever since Galaxy Nexus because of install issues with AT&T's VVM app. If you use Hangouts for SMS it is even more convenient because voicemails are merged with SMS and Hangouts conversations in the app keeping everything in one conversation thread.
I just had to make sure my wifi was off when first starting app but its worked fine on the last 2 custom AOSP roms I have loaded.

Not getting texts on any ROM (SOLVED)

Just like the title says. I have tried Resurrection Remix, CM12.1, and Mokee so far, and none of them seem to work properly with my texting. I have tried reflashing radio and flashing baybutchers kernel for every ROM and haven't had any luck. Anybody else having these issues? PS I am back on stock ROM, I need my texts.

Doubt anyone else is having those issues on ALL those ROMs. It would have been a very prominent topic. The fact that you have tried all those ROMs and the condition persists suggests you are not configuring something correctly?
What texting app are you using? That would be a start. You know in settings, you often have to "allow" the app to be the SMS app? For instance, in the screenshot below "Hangouts" is my SMS app.
Then a corollary to that... As an experiment, try a different texting app (there's hundreds available) just to see if that solves the problem. Then you would know to look closer at the settings of the problematic app to see what's wrong?

Usually I use the built in messenger, but I also have tried hangouts on each of them and the problem is still there. I might be giving Resurrection another go later on today to see if my problem sticks.
Adblockers can include the mms servers which will prevent you from sending and receiving picture or group messages. If you run one, try disabling it.
Yeah, gotta be a conflict somewhere. Try installing ROM and GAPPs, and before any other apps, test the texting?

That does make sense and yes I do run adaway, I will try disabling it once I get another chance to flash again.
Anyways, I had flashed Resurrection again and the texting worked for an entire day, I woke up the next morning and decided to test it out and sure enough I was not getting any texts. As the post above me said, it could be adblocker so next time I will try disabling it.
Try selecting another operator, for example if you use verizon, change to at&t, then return back to verizon, this will refresh the message response center and you might have your sms restored. And have a good look on the number that you are texting, i'm from Mexico, and my turbo on cm12.1 kept adding +1 so my sms didn't worked either
I'm having the same problem on the latest computerfreak rom
Hey guys i got it fixed on CM 12.1 so far. It wasn't the ad blocker, so I decided to try to call the activation number for Verizon (*228) to see if that did anything. To my surprise, it actually fixed any connection issues I was also having with the Network and now my texts all go through and I receive them all. Just though I should share my solution.

If I recall correctly, *228 is intended for only non-LTE Verizon phones (e.g., feature phones), not for LTE smartphones. I'm glad it fixed the issue, but I think there is the possibility that it could've made things worse. A caution to anyone else with this issue, should they consider trying this.

yeah i don't recommend doing this either, i actually screwed up the LTE on my SIM card doing this and can only get 3G now... oops lol. Good thing i had an extra Nano SIM card for the occasion. So in short, this didn't solve anything, but i have been receiving texts even with the working LTE SIM, so maybe i just had a bad flash or something.
