Is the Xperia Z's low light camera performance likely to match the Lumia 920? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of the best things on my 920 is the low light camera performance and I was wondering if the Xperia Z is likely to be able in any way match it in this respect? I saw a few camera examples on GSMArena that looked promising.

Wow, thanks for sharing, first shot you can see high ISO noise, but as for the rest they look very good, it's a shame they didn't compare it to say Lumia and pureview and iphone 5

Camera

I had a HTC One S earlier.
The One S 8mp camera was better than the Z 13mp.wtf
But the sonys camera is way quicker.
I would be happy that this is a software bug and not hardware problem
Are you happy with your Z's camera?

My camera is excellent in good light outdoors but pies poor in low light shots my Xperia t blows it away, could be fault on my handset? My Xperia 10 takes on par photos in low light, very disappointed with the camera wish I just kept the Xperia t
http://esupport.sony.com/docs/dvimag/DSCWX10_guide/eng/contents/03/04/03/03.html
This explanation is from the manual:
In [Superior Auto] mode, the camera shoots burst images based on the recognized scene, then creates a composite of the burst images (Overlay shooting).
The camera automatically corrects the backlight and reduces the noise by overlaying images, so a higher-quality image results than in [Intelligent Auto] mode.
So what's the best settings to be on superior auto? What about focusing is the square supposed to go green mines blue all my other Sony's are green, can you post the best settings for everyday use please
thanks

the camera on my htc one x is much better and quicker than the experia z, also disappointed, tried many settings on the z but i just wanna take a pic quick when my little girl does something funny, not **** about with every setting on the phone taking 20 pics to get 1 good one, so far, pretty annoying and poor
The camera is poor in any low light situation been trying the camera out all day the camera is very disappointing indoors, prob gonna sell mine. Had high hopes for this phone its worse than the Xperia t camera I own

Strange, all of the picture samples and youtube tests show that it has great low light camera performance. Why do you think it's bad? I currently have an xperia x10, i can not believe the low light picture quality is the same. Even my sister's xperia u has much better low light performance than my x10.

It's normal that the pictures come out more blurry in low light. Maybe you should try turning off image stabilization, that helped a lot on my x10. I've seen low light pictures of the xperia z vs the iphone 5 where the colours of the z were more vibrant. So maybe your settings are wrong, the lens is dirty or you had unrealistic expectations?

the camera has low quality half-light

The camera has low quality half-light, I factory reset and delete logs you camera and nothing, the photos attached is pixelated red and blue
I'm with JB 4.2.2 => 10.3.A.0.423 C6603
I have the same problem with 4.2.2

Just don't use Superior Auto. Find yourself th best settings for night pictures and they fr sure will be an improvement over the Superior Auto mode, which in my opinion just bumps up the iso, making the pictures noisier than the lens capable of.
Even without superior auto it's very bad

yep this flash sucks compare to my last phone.
Try to use scene modes
Actually find it is better than manual(maybe I dont know how to get the best setting )

That's the typical fail of most of smartphones, the quality highly depends of the quality of the optical. Exemple : Nokia use some Carl Zeiss optical, most used in astronomy with great quality, their photos in low luminosity is clearly better.
You'll be always blocked by the maximum that the optical can do, don't wait better or buy a reflex.
Here what i'm talking about
Thanks for the answers
Thanks for the answers, expect an update there is no other, and use normal mode for night shots.

Xperia SP camera problems?

Hi all,
I am currently owning Sony Xperia P and I am thinking about an upgrade to SP. But one problems remain. Camera.
I have read a ton of reviews and it seems that camera is producing pictures with a lot of noise and that the camera of older model P, is actually, better.
I have seen that people say that some custom roms and mods solve this issue, but nothing concrete.
Can you please tell me your experiences with camera? Is it really that bad? Any of the updates solved the problem?
thanks

I'm using the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition camera (gallery app) and this solves any problem with the camera(you can use it on stock and all other roms), from autofocus to noise. So I'd say dont worry about it and get this amazing phone!
Produces great pictures. But besides that, it still is a phone, not a professional camera hehe.

Can you put here some samples of photos taken with stock camera and this S4 camera? Some in dim conditions and some in bright conditions. You know. Some kitchen photos, some landscape with blue sky, etc...
thanks !

No.
Edit: There is other threads about this and not only on XDA. Look before asking or get a real camera.
its true that the camera of Xperia SP is not that good compared to XP or S3.
the pictures are very noisy and yellowish and in low light the camera get more worse.
i have also tried S4 play edition camera, camera 360, moto x camera but no major difference.

Camera usage at nighttime questions

I would like to know more about the camera and video camera usage at night time with flash enabled.
Is it good quality when viewed on the phone's screen?
If not, could you please state the affects produced by the camera of the phone during night. For example, grainy pictures, interlaces, glitches etc...
If that is so, would you suggest the iphone 4 instead of this sony xperia z?
Thanks very much.

Xperia Z is 10x better than iPhone 4
For me,i tried to take photos at dark place with flash
So far so good, quality is okay, but i suggest to enable HDR for better quality but only with 12MP.

Ok well thanks for the reply. Why is HDR only 12 MP. Isn't the back camera 13 MP. Does it matter if it is 1 MP less or not?

For all devices,if take pictures with HDR,it will reduce 1MP,and doesn't matter.
For Sony's Superior auto mode,only with 9MP

Indoor photos - high noise and edge artefacts

Hello Xperia fans!
I have recently bought Xperia XZ3 and noticed that every time I take a photo indoors it has a very high amount of noise and edge artefacts. As you can see from the comparison with Galaxy S9 I did, while S9 has quite strong post processing it still manages to retain a lot of details and looks better than XZ3 with very noisy and grainy photos. This really doesn't look like Sony algorithms are doing decent job to me and while I appreciate the effort to retain the details, in my opinion S9 does a better job in indoor light conditions.
What do you guys think?

While I wouldn't say the XZ3 camera is great (it's essentially the same camera as the XZ1 from 2017) I do prefer the look of your XZ3 photos over the Galaxy 9 ones. The Galaxy 9 photo is overly blurred and smoothed resulting in a loss of detail. The JBL logo is still recognisable on your XZ3 photo but on SG9 it's become a single unrecognisable smeared blob. You can probably even recreate the SG9 photo from the XZ3 photo simply by blurring/smoothing it more. The white balance is also better on the XZ3 (pink tint on the SG9).

That's a really good comment and I completely agree.
The colour reproduction on Xperia is much better and the overall feel of the photo is nicer. I think that Sony's aim was to ensure that the photo looks as best as possible when viewed full screen but at the expense of sacrificing the quality when pixel peeping and I agree with that decision.
Ultimately, only a small fraction of consumers care about how good the photo looks like when zoomed in 100% or 200% and what they really care about is how it looks when looking at it full screen or on social media. When uploading a photo to social media, the compression algorithms would most likely reduce the noise and smooth out the photo anyway but the colours most likely wouldn't be affected so overall the Xperia photo when posted on Facebook would look better that the S9 photo.
I agree. But to achieve excellent quality will turn out on manual settings. Make a good photo indoors - you need to set the resolution to 12 megapixels (16: 9), ISO 800, shutter speed: at least 1/60. Next - experiments.
The custom ROMs based on Sony aosp will achieve a better quality.
