[Q] Can apps be re-named? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've installed "SayIt" app launcher which is a remarkably accurate and excellent voice-activated app launcher. However, there are certain app names that it dosen't recognise, for instance "K-9 Mail"; however I pronounce that it always opens Gmail, if I freeze Gmail and then try, it says "no application found". Can anyone tell me a way of renaming apps, at least from SayIt's point of view, in order to be able to have SayIt open them?

Renaming apps wont help, the launcher you are using needs to recognize what you say, cant be done so easily, if possible talk to the dev.

You can try renaming. There is a tool called apk edit v0.4. Download and it can be used to rename packages. But does not work on all apps. You will have to make a backup if the k9 mail using es file explorer or any other app. This will store it as an apk. Download that to pc and use the tool. Then install it back on system.

Workaround for apps that need GPS?

Boy, there are a lot of apps in the market we cannot download on the gTablet due to it not having GPS. CNN, USA Today, Wunder Radio, weather apps, etc... Some really do not need GPS and can be used. So is there a work around out there? don't really want to get them illegally either. Can we get these elsewhere or are we SOL on most?
yeah..you can sideload them. You can usually find the free ones with a little looking.
Search (google usually works!) for the app name + apk
so...something like "cnn android apk"
you will most likely have to go through a couple of results to find the actual file.
download it to PC, then USB it over to the tablet. I have a folder on my SD card I call installers where I dump all the apk's to. It has to be the .apk though - .zip or .rar won't work.
Once it's on the tablet, just use Iexplore of fileexplore to find the installer folder, and click on the apk. It'll install, then ask open or done. I usually open them to test, and then uninstall if they don't work and delete the apk.
I sideload about 95% of my software....
In fact, here's the cnn apk....

Click to collapse
Not really. It's a CNN .apk, but not the CNN .apk. It's a 3rd-party application rather than the official CNN version.

[Q] App download

Is there a way to download apps directly to my PC, instead of the Nook?
There are some apps that are "not compatible" in the market, but several times when I get them as standalone apk, I can install them and get them to run on the nook!
hello
i have some thing like that problem i download app from internet like acrobat reader for android and this app is in my download but when i hit it say error and didnt install
can any body help me?
http://tinyurl.com/3gnvuzq
or even EzPDF or mantano cuz it is way better.
http://tinyurl.com/4xqlw6x i know it is a bit "warezzy" but comparing to other it really doesn't have many of these illegal apps (not even 1% of their huge database). It is better than amazon appstore, because it both downloads and installs apps, instead of just downloading (root needed).
Felt a bit retarded looking at the solution... :S
It is just a bit obnoxious to download all the free software by looking at google, but considering the solution of installing android SDK, emulator, a rom with market, etc. - as I've recently seen on the internet - in order to find the appropriate apk, I think it is way better to google or use the black-mart app - even though I'm looking more for a way to circumvent device compatibility...
Thanks, domi.nos
BTW, whenever you do a search for an apk, lots of time you get to market links, and takes you back to the old android market - which is more than 75% of the links I get to find...
For me, the easiest way to install apps is threw market.android.com . I haven't had the problems i ran into using the app on the nook itself. When you hit the "Send to" button it just says "Phone" and will push to your nook.

Paid APKs on Gear

I've noticed people cannot port paid APKs (or haven't) to the Gear due to licensing, no internet, etc.
If you have purchased the app on your account, I recommend using 'APK Downloader', a Chrome extension that uses your Google Account to download the APK file directly from the play store through the browser. Then use Wondershare to install the paid APK to you Gear
Alternatively, you can download the paid APK to your phone and navigate to "/data/app" and copy it to your computer (using Wondershare) then porting it to the Gear again.
Obviously you need root, and these are the methods I've been using.
APK Downloader link: https://lekensteyn.nl/apk-downloader
I can confirm this works on apps such as Root Explorer, Nova, Apex, AlarmDroid, Emulators, UCCW, Widgets, and I'd imagine most, if not all paid APKs.
The issue isn't with getting the .apks over to the watch.
Any dev with half a brain knows that the only real paid-authorization methods all require a network connection,
which at this time, the watch doesn't have.
I'm sure the large majority of devs still don't use any sophisticated activation methods and probably just
assume that people don't know how to pull an .apk and upload it for everyone else, but I'd imagine
that at least a couple major apps use a method akin to what I've described.
Yep, most decent apps have built in license check which utilise google services framework which the watch doesn't have

install apk to my watch with adb

I have installed Kakaotalk and Zipper(file manager) with ADB.
it sucessed but when i excute it on watch it always go out.
what's wrong with the apps... resolutions?
AND Some apps does work like Root explorer, facebook mesenger(keyboard chat disappear)
Maybe these apps are not made to work as stand-alone app in AW2.0
Did they work in AW1.5 ?

Question Change the default in-app file manager

Hi. I'm trying to set up an Obsidian vault pointing to my own OwnCloud server so it synces between my devices. But when I open the Obsidian app (or any other app, as far as I've tried) and I click "Choose directory..." the file manager that pops up doesn't give me the option of chosing my remote OwnCloud storage. However, the super simple "Files" app in Play Store is able to do this. Do you have any insight of how can I set that app called "Files" as default when I try to browse my phone through an app?
PS: you might be wondering why don't I just sync a folder that I have access to. Sadly, this is not possible with the latest OwnCloud android client.
Thanks!
