[ROM][CM-10.1][4.2.2][Apr-27] Novastar nightly KANGs [Harsh kernel][Halfbreed] - Nexus 4 Android Development

Novastar CM-10.1 UNOFFICIAL nightlies
I've been compiling nightlies for personal use with my personal preferences included and since I noticed a lot of people run this setup I figured I'd share it, since it's pretty nice not to have to flash three or more zips every update.
This is meant to be an uncomplicated ROM with amazing screen calibration, good performance without having to fiddle with settings for ages and with the best new CM features.
Features:
CM-10.1 UNOFFICIAL NIGHTLY
Cherry picked:
- libstagefright: support for disabling buffer metadata
Harsh kernel [Linux 3.4.39]
- always up to date
- no need for configuration apps, runs great by default
Hardcoded halfbreed screen calibration by molesarecoming
- the best looking screen calibration for the Nexus 4, amazing improvement
- automatically integrated into the kernel ('hardcoded')
Nexus 4 default boot animation
- because I don't like CM-10.1 boot animation and of course we're all proud to be a Nexus owner.
I'm going to try to do daily updates to the ROM and the kernel and I'm open to cherry picks if you request them. Usually I don't add them myself, because not introducing bugs typically outweighs not having to wait for a few extra days. But if you guys have a special request I'll be happy to add it.
Download
Install instructions:
You can flash without wiping anything if you're coming from another CM-10.1 ROM or from a earlier version of this ROM (the CM install script wipes everything required automatically, wiping dalvik and cache isn't necessary). If you're coming from another ROM you probably don't need to wipe, but if you're getting errors try a clean install. Always do a NANDROID backup before installing!
Gapps are - as usual in CM ROMs - not included. You need to flash them the first time you install the ROM and every time you do a factory reset. You can download the most recent gapps here.
About goo.im:
There will be versions showing on the servers that are still being uploaded. If you download files that are significantly smaller than usual you're most likely downloading half of a ROM.
I've also included an automatic upload script to my build procedure. This means that there will be builds appearing on goo.im that are experimental. Usually they'll be fine, but if you want to be sure, only download after the announcement in this thread.
Credits go to:
CyanogenMod
aremcee (as CM device maintainer for our device)
Harsh (for making the best kernel)
molesarecoming (for his amazing efforts on calibrating our screen)

Very nice, I think I will give this ROM a try. I assume as with most ROMs GAPPS is not included and needs to be flashed separately?

Yes. But they 'stick' when upgrading, so it's not required to flash them after the first time (unless you wipe, of course).

I haven't tested it yet, but it should, as the kernel source is already synced with the new source.
I'll test later.

Hey flashed your ROM, it's running smooth and stable, but I am used to AOKP in terms of customization.
Too much missing for my taste. But I think this ROM isn't meant to be so customizable.
I like the hardcoded harsh kernel, because normally the harsh kernel comes with stock colors and has to be modified.

Yea, this is just stock CM 10.1.
A Harsh kernel with hardcoded gamma settings that could run on any ROM (including AOKP) is on my to do

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but shouldn't this be in 'Android Development?' Since this is a kang, it's not classified as 'original,' unless I'm wrong...

Requested the thread to be moved. I never really understood the difference between the different dev sections, but you're probably right since this ROM is not original, just parts of other developers combined.

Anyway, have you (or anybody else) tested it yet? How's the battery?
I'm on 4.0.4 currently. I would switch, only if temporary, to see how it is.

it has AOKP based rom control and its a moddified trebuchet, and some some cm parts and some aosp..try checking out the details before you just assume, ive ran drews builds off and on since the beggining of ICS they are always solid..
We wanted a new option to CyanogenMod but not completely dismiss CyanogenMod. So using AOSP we started creating new code and modifying current source code in the addition to using some CyanogenMod code during alpha testing stages. Our source is built from AOSP unless otherwise stated.
The ORCA Project is a supercharged rom with performance features and extra enhancements that works on multiple devices and runs the latest AOSP ICS version from Google.
The ORCA Project also comes with a distribution available for desktop, netbook, laptop or live cd and is able to dual boot on x86 machines.

Look at the files in system/app and system/ framework. This has been through the dsixda kitchen courtesy of cherry picks. Drew has a sure knack of using others work. At least I code my own smalis and through help from brainmaster fully code my tweaks. This is more talented work however than a rom residing here in xda that doesn't conform to aslr and only recently got fonts working.
If people are releasing roms on 4.04 or even stock IML74K that aren't stable or are kanging cherry's we that actually sit in gedit for hours on end are wasting time.
For the readers here please use something like cm9 2.1, codename android gummynex or whatever but kangs as Dev roms has to stop.

I tried this rom (out of pure curiosity) and it nearly lasted a hour on my phone of testing. It's a garbage mashup that is buggy and it behaves like the early emulator based ics roms imo. This is not a recommended rom and that's likely the reason no one bothered to mention it here on xda.
every other rom posted here on xda is better than orca hands down ... thanks for coming out
... and yes Drew is the main developer for the Nexus S release of Orca.

AOSP and AOKP based roms use the same Kernels but CM Based roms use different Kernels and will not work unless setup specifically for CM Roms.
This is 5.4 MB? Hmmm...need to see how it performs.
Tested this kernel. Overall snappy & fast with Ondemandx even at stock speeds. There is no bigmem support. This is very important for Nexus S due to low available memory. Screen colors look too yellow. This can be adjusted by user if Voodoo color is included. Inclusion of USB fast charge will give an added advantage.

I understand, looks like CM requires a kernel patch for this http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/23541/
I was unaware as it was tested on an aosp based rom
We made a decision here, we're not going to support CyanogenMOD officially.
We will update the OP accordingly, it's just not desirable to maintain 2 builds for 1 device. The kernel should be fully compatible with AOSP/AOKP, and will be the kernel bundled with the CrossBones rom.
If you wish to use this kernel on CyanogenMod, you may build a copy yourself using herring_zen_defconfig and setting CONFIG_FOR_CYANOGENMOD=y . Keep in mind unofficial builds won't be officially supported by us. Please when building an unofficial kernel ALWAYS SET CONFIG_ZEN_VERSION_CODE=0. While it may not have any affect now, it may affect some userspace apps.
The kernel source is located here: https://github.com/AndroidDeveloperAlliance/ZenKernel_Crespo
We also provide a custom prebuilt GCC toolchain you can use here: https://github.com/AndroidDeveloperAlliance/ZenKernel_ARCH_armv7a_compiler
Only official builds are supported!
Thanks

We're offering this to the community with no expectations that you use it, but for those who do use it we want them to be completely satisfied.
If it doesn't work for you, then I encourage you to use something from one of the other great development teams out there.
I thought of a couple solutions: 1.) creating 2 kernel builds, 2.) creating a sysfs interface so CM users could flash an init script that'd enable the CM ioctl's. Basically it comes down to this - neither solution is up to my standards for now.

Lets talk about CM10 and ICS - with POLL

Hi peeps!
So... moving away and not spam the other dev and general threads, I just wanted to open a new one where we can discuss about the differences between CM10 on old bootloader (cause the other roms are soooo 2011 ) and the new STOCK ICS great tuned roms on NEW BOOTLOADER
I was using DM v30b ICS for a long time and I was pretty satisfied! But after I saw the call bug fix on the official CM10, I didn't even think about it and replaced it
Not that the DMs version isnt fine, but I was remembering that the CM10 version on old bootloader was pretty awesome!
Im using the CM10 official and the only thing I would say against it is the battery life Everything else is awesome!
P.S. This thread is not for DEVs, cause I dont want to offend anyone with posts like "This ROM is much better than this".
Every dev here is FUK*n AWESOME and the jobs they do are amazing... Be honest... before our devs started to tune the phones, we would all be on some freakin apple ****s! (sorry for my language!).
Keep up that good job and ignore our post and threads, its just sharing opinions between consumers
PUT yOUR OPINIONS IN HERE RIGHT NOW !
That's right, Official CM10 is Awesome since LG release their source code. But I will be honest, I tried the first Stock ICS v30a and I was not happy with it because of the speed...even if we have 2 cores. Then I return to cm10...but since we have official source code, the devs start making custom kernel which are really AWESOME, seriously. So, I'm now on cm10 (old bt) with Pidocchio kernel (old bt) for about 5-6 weeks...and it rocks. :good:

CM10 for new bootloader by pengus77
Flashed it yeastarday and the battery life is amazing.
I think cm 10 is pretty awesome, the only thing holding it back for me using it is the battery drain
And LG's official ICS was ***t if u need something thats stable ( i know it doesn't really belong here ) i think u need to back to GB like temasek's builds, but that's my meaning
pengus77 is doing a very nice job. and like marsgod took his fix to gerrit to be reviewed by cm team and they included into official repository, i think pengus77 job should too. in that way, no need to continue with the new bootloader cause is a waste of space and a mess for everybody to move there with nvflash. id we can continue using our gb bootloader and partition layout, that one we used during about 1 year, why not continue if it is working alright? my vote for cm10 official with those all changes commited into cm repository.
I'm using original locked and unrooted 30B in Italy even it is made for ESA region.
I think that this rom is near to be a definitive stable rom: very smooth and fast, no problems except for a battery drain still high (20 hours autonomy with 40% wifi); the camera could be better, too.
I'm very happy of it and I'm waiting for the same LG release for EU.
I never used overclocking or custom kernels even if I tested most of the custom roms available here on XDA. I must say that I never found a real advantage nor stability testing these roms, maybe now the time for them is near to be over.

I have a question about the call bug: when does it usually show up?
I have never experienced it, but at the same time none of my calls are ever longer than 5 minutes.
I'm still on a really early version of CM10, and I've never run into the call bug.
Only problem really is the WiFi drain. Has that been fixed? I haven't been keeping up with the latest nightlies.

The call bug was said to be caused by a race condition - meaning it creeps up unexpectedly depending on the activity done with the phone in that timeframe.
As for wifi drain, flash the kernel tonyp compiled (containing pengus77's fix), onto any CM10 nightly that came out after the V30a sources dropped (basically December onwards).
You really should get a nightly from December onwards - a lot of things, not just the call bug, were fixed or improved along the way. I'm on 01/03 and having an improved experience over the SU660-based sources.
CM10 by arcee is very stable for me with self-compiled kernel of 24mb ramhack and patches from wkpark(including the lg twin boot logo fix). Very smooth and no BSODs and call bug. Just waiting for cm10.1 to be released by arcee.

And just one last question:
So the callbug is fixed on the newest nightlies, but the WiFi fix has not been submitted/merged yet? So if I want the WiFi fix I still have to flash the kernel tonyp compiled, which I'm assuming is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36032539&postcount=661 ?

Reboot, boot rom and reboot again
CHANGES
additionally to temasek's builds this also includes some p990 related fixes/optimizations, taken from pengus77 and tonyp githubs.
kowalski kernel by pengus77 is already included as prebuilt (exp126)
default lcd density is set to 213
Focal Camera app from cm10.2 included FOR TESTING (not working pretty well yet though)
Removed some optional CM stuff like wallpapers, live wallpapers, updater and changelog
Fixed device-off charging on new bl (by pengus77)
Included PerformanceControl app from AOKP
more..
TIPS
"Black screen of death" while charging or plugging usb cable in/out?
Turn on "2nd core auto hot plug" in Kowalski Manager. I don't understand why, but it helps.
DOWNLOAD
Gapps? I recommend using tonyp's non-neon gapps on our p990

He has and has always been and will always be given permission for my past and future work. No additional permission required then, now and future.
I'm now concentrating on cm10.2 and has stated from scratch with forward ports pouring in slowly.

do u working cm10.2 for our device?
MisjudgedTwat and Temasek, great thanks for your work!
Just installed it on my testdevice and its a very fast and responsive rom!
Interesting with the Focal cam app, agree with you that its for testing, had some many crashes with it and it seems to me the autofocus not works too well!
Keep up the good work!

If it's even possible, @MisjudgedTwat will do it. CM10.2 dropped non-neon devices due to compatibility issue so idk.
Fwiw, I'll have started a base cm10.2 and bringing in back whatever features in my cm10.1. It was done from scratch because of tons of conflicts which it was beyond my ability to resolve.
If and when p990 can do it, @MisjudgedTwat probably will.

From now just concentrate on providing support to MisjudgedTwat, it's now his thread..his rom. No need to mention me anymore.
Cheers and best wishes.
I'll be busy with cm10.2.
I know this one is for New but any possibility for Old bootloader if not much of an effort.
Wow its great,. Many thanks dude..

i already tried building cm-10.2 for our p990. after fixing some build errors i wasnt even able to flash it since the updater-binary of the zip instanty crashed.
so the chances that we will get a full cm-10.2 on a p990 are super low.

For me theres no reason to build an oldbl version, but if anybody wants to port it, feel free to do it.

I just suggested it in your thread.
Samsung galaxy R booted cm10.2 as tonyp stated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390194
Also would you mind saying if we can we flash it on top of temasek's v90 without full wipe?

[ROM][P75x0/p4wifi/p4][JB4.3]Omni ROM (3-Nov-2013)

Earlier, I have been compiling InfamousAOKP, Paranoid Android, Carbon and PAC for the galaxy tab (P7510/p4wifi & P7500/p4) based on JellyBean 4.3. I now decided to move over to OMNI ROM as base: http://omnirom.org/
The nice thing of OMNI in my personal opinion is smoothness: it is relatively low in features, but at the same time it is not that resource hungry as some other ROMs. The end result is a smooth ROM.
It features the Infamous kernel (same kernel as for JB4.2, with SELinux).
First installation:
-Boot into recovery
-Factory reset
-Wipe system partition
-Install ROM
-Install Superuser
-Install gapps (you can download any gapps package you like, as long as it is specifically for JB4.3!)
-Boot it up
Update installation (OMNI -> OMNI):
-Boot into recovery
-Install ROM
-Install Superuser
-Boot it up

Known issues:
1. DashClock FC if trying to enter settings -> can be solved by deleting it from /system/apps followed by installing it from Google Play
2. ROM is not rooted by default -> you should flash SuperSU (can be downloaded from the links in post #1)
What can I say.... fantastic I luv this rom installed over first Omni followed instructions no problem at all..... dill

This is possibly the only 4.2 ROM I'd use because of its smoothness.

You would think that since Chainfire is part of team OMNI, the ROM would be rooted by default.
I've just read the xda portal news about OMNI, and I'm quite confused with people nowadays. I thought that all this time everyone liked cm, but it seems that they've now become the "bad guys" like Samsung and Google just because they've gone corporate and OMNI is the "hero" of the story. I probably don't understand all these because I'm a kid.

SuperSU from Chainfire will come into Omni by default from what I understand, it just hasn't happened yet.
I don't see it so black&white with CM. Yes, they have gone a more commercial route. Are they evil? No, I don't think so. The only disadvantage of a commercial model is that it may lead to unpleasant situations for people who contributed a lot to CM without getting anything in return. But I will personally not be deterred from using CM-source due to the CM Inc. thing.
The strong point of CM(-based) ROMs has always been the huge number of people contributing to CM, making it one of the most stable aftermarket ROMs. If you compare this to e.g. Carbon or PAC, which I have been building myself as well, the much lower number of developers and the lower number of officially supported devices by these ROMs, has often lead to less stable endproducts. I am very curious to see how this develops for CM in future, whether the large number of volunteer-developers will stick with CM or go somewhere else.
hey kasper_h, nice new build, good to see you busy and doing good work! I installed it on a 3G 7500, so far I've been having two problems besides the google TTS crash which seems to be a generic bug in 4.3, it crashes on storage settings and the USB-PC connection seems not to work as well, something related to "com.process.android.media"-something crashes and it just doesn't appear to be recognized at all on the PC side. USB on 4.3 roms worked tho.
P.S.: Love your work and dedication, thank you for doing this.

I agree with you. I don't really care about CM going commercial or whatever it is they want to do. I actually think that CM going commercial is a good thing because then the project will not stop. But it seems like there are quite a number of people hating on CM in the comments section here.

At the same time, I don't know how much work Omni will still do on android-4.3. They already started working on kitkat/4.4.

Yeah, I know. People like this kind of bashing anyway here on XDA it seems (although our galaxy tab section seems to have almost no problem). I doubt many of the responders do any development themselves....
Thanks for this Rom. Best one so far!

Thank you!!! Installing right now
L.E. : What I/O Scheduler do you guys use on this ROM/tablet ?
Thanks!
Updated from previous BUILT, dirty flashed! Running with Google Now Launcher! Very Smooth and better memory management too. Thanks.
I have a little problem : the tablet doesn't shows when is charging. If I put it to charge it says not charging in the battery options, but it is charging.
Any ideas?
Are these updated files from those you first posted it on the PAC thread for the wifi version? Just trying to decide if I need to reflash.
Is multi window removed? I can't seem to find it.

Maybe a stupid question, but I can't find 'make screenshot' by long pushing the power button.
I really miss that menu option.
Btw issue same for the Omni version for the SGS1 ...
My Nexus4 has a water problem (waiting for spare parts) ... So I went back to my old Samsung SGS1
Thanks Kasper for both roms
Cu later,
Philip
