[Q] Call Quality on Xperia Z/ZL - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There have been a few posts that say the call quality is bad.
GSM Arena's review states that calls are loud and clear, but the speakerphone performance is awful.
(Link to specific page for GSM Arena review)
While everyone is wondering about the display and battery life (two very important qualities in a phone),
can anyone provide details about the CALL quality?

yeah yeah,.... a few weeks ago it was cool hyping the xperia z in reviews....now it seems that bashing it is the new way to go...i've even seen reviews that complain about the too edgy design of the device, and it doesn't feel as good in the hand as the s3 htc one does...
(don't get me wrong, nothing against you, but people should stay cool about all the upcoming news on how bad this and that aspect of the z is...)

Disappointed by the loudspeaker, but "loud and clear" calling is good for me. Don't use speaker really so don't care too much about that.

All they actually say is:
The built-in secondary microphone is used for active noise-cancellation, so calls are loud and clear even in noisy environments.

The way that's phrased makes me wonder if they actually tried making calls with it, or if they are simply noting the fact that it has active noise cancellation.
I've only seen one review that specifically mentions call quality, and it's fairly negative: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z-Review_id3247/page/4
call quality is fine but nothing exceptional. The earpiece is a bit weak for our taste, meaning that you may have some trouble hearing your callers when in noisy locations. Do not expect wonders from the quality – everything will sound quite high and digital. Strangely, the sound that gets transmitted through the microphone of the Xperia Z gets somewhat modulated and appears distorted on the other end of the line. Lowering the volume can help you to remedy this issue, but still, it's something we though was worth mentioning because we haven't encountered it in many other phones.

Here, I've got a 8/10.
But there is no details...

any more opinions?

Call quality (both ends of the call) is excellent, quality and volume are top-notch.
The Z has a "waterproof" main speaker and the output is quite low, so not great when used as a speakerphone. The ZL on the other hand has a freakin amazing speaker - really loud.

[Q] Is the sound(voice) broken?

I don't know if is just my impression, but comparing with my old HTC magic, the voice quality during a call was better... despite clear, with the RAZRi the voice sounds a bit like if the other person was in a bottle... And also some people noticed my voice a bit 'distant'.
Anybody thinks the same? Or my phone is with a problem? There is a way to equalize the voice?
thx
I have an excellent call quality, no "robotic voice" nor distant on the other side and the clarity in the earpiece is close to perfection.

+1. And excellent means really superb. Either through earpiece, speaker, headphones, any application...Better than any phone I used so far.

Sound quality

So, the Xperia Z was officially launched at a PR event in Dubai yesterday, and the price seems okay too (2499 AED, ~680 USD). I've seen concerns about the screen quality but will check that out myself when its out in stores (March). Can anyone who has the Z comment on the sound quality on the device ?
There is already a thread in Q&A.
What kind of sound quality are you talking about? Audio playback?
I'm concerned by the volume of the earpiece, and how loudly and clearly you can hear people during a phone call. In other words, what the X10 sucked ass at.
If you are concerned about audio check out the HTC One.
Stereo Front speakers, amps, amazing all around.
I've just received my phone from japan and the volume of the phone whilst playing youtube videos or music is appalling. It's hardly audible even at the highest setting. If you're wanting a phone with good speakers this is not the phone, you'll be highly disappointed. Other than the sound everything else on the phone is perfect. Great build quality etc. let me know if you want pictures or to know more about the phone id be happy to post
ya, I heard the speakers are compromised because of water proof. Guess I still got an option for head set which is what I use for my current phone.

Hardly audible? I wonder what you have done with my ears
It's not as loud as some other phones but it's still more than adequate. It's enough to wake me up in the morning (quite easily even) and the best thing is that it doesn't sound distorted even at the highest volume.

I may have over exaggerated with my statement xD. But to be honest it's loud speaker whilst playing music is poorer than an a Lg Optimus L3, I was forced to use the optimus L3 whilst waiting for my xperia z lol so I know full well what it sounds like it. Sound via the headphone jack is fine just the loud speaker sucks it would have problems waking me up but their is always vibration so it doesn't really bother me.

Well, that's a wrap with my interest in the Z. Nothing more annoying "to me" than a phone with crappy speakers.

if you have a iphone 5 and use the life proof case from fre that is pretty much the sound quality of the Xperia Z maybe slightly less Don't let that one feature prevent you from buying this fantastic phone it truly is amazing. And that's my honest opinion of the device ;D i'll upload a video for you guys of the sound quality
as I said guys here is the video of the phone sound volume via the loud speaker. If you guys have any requests on how I should record the phone please let me know this was recorded by a galaxy tab 10.1. It's actually not that bad as I previously mentioned please enjoy if you want me to play any other song let me know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9V9UysM0hI&feature=youtu.be

Howdy, what is the in-call volume like with the earpeice? Loudspeaker is not a major issue for me, but in call volume must be good. My One X now is really quite bad in this regard.
Thanks

In call volumes are fantastic can't complain very loud and clear, had no issues with people not being able to hear me. if you know of any way I can test I wouldn't mind making a video for you ;] but trust me when I say it's good even when taking public transport people on the other end of the call could still hear me very clear without issues. I highly recommend this phone much better than the lg optimus g or galaxy s3 I previously owned. I aint just saying it because I own the sony xperia z haha just my honest opinion.
That's great news thanks no idea how you would do a video lol but if you say it's good then I'm happy.

Easily. It's a little less loud than most other phones but it's still loud. It's not exactly inaudible.
I can say the sound quality with ClearAudio+ is nice but it there is not the best. I have my Note 2 optimized with Neak Kernel and his tweaks (Wolfson) are great.. The equalizer from XZ but the hammer looks great and can be adjusted some. Moreover, the unit is still fresh with the time kernel and various mods and custom roms come naturally (I also gets to cook too for XZ)
I don't want to crash the party but the speaker is just lame, it's positioned at the right side bottom of the phone which means that when you hold the phone you will cover the speaker (left hand with your fingers, holding it with right hand isn't an option because the speaker is in the palm of your hand) The speaker is tiny and totally not loud, and when watching a video you can hear the sound come out of the right corner instead from the phone, it's very directional, i am very disappointed about this.
Also sound through headphones is not as good as i would have liked and certainly not as full sounding as with S3.

I agree, it's not the best. But seriously mate, S3 has terrible sound...bad comparison.

Getting the best call quality out of HTC One

Hi,
I'm not sure I'm very impressed with the HTC One call quality. On mine, I feel people cut out quite a lot and I miss quite a few odd words. I feel that the sound processing in the earpiece is too extreme, everything is either too loud, or not audible. The sound is relatively clear, clearer than my old Desire S, but I find I can't understand what people are saying as well with my HTC One because the range in volume - I'm not quite sure how to explain it. I've also found the signal strength to not be as good compared to DS (although this is going purely on the arbitrary measure of "bars" )
Anyways, I thought I would try and gather up some bits on call quality on the HTC One.
2 things I've found already from around the forum:
1. Ensure if you're using a case that the hole for the microphone is correctly aligned
2. Ensure your pinkie isn't covering the microphone hole at the bottom (a worryingly large amount of people seem to have done this...)
Does call quality vary across ROMs?
And is it possible to update the radio firmware individually on the HTC One?
Any other tips to improve call quality?
Is there a semi-objective way to benchmark call quality?
its probably your network or the signal strength. the HTC One has the best call quality ive ever had on a phone
Hey, I've got similar issues with my HTC one. I noticed that some parts are so loud that it hurts and some parts are so quiet, not even noticeable.
Especially in conference calls, some people seem to be filtered by the HTC's noise reduction. I compared the call quality to my friend's Samsung and he doesn't have the problems. We were in the same conference. Some people were to quiet to be understood on my phone but in excellent volume on his.
HTC's support gave me the hint to cover the rear mic next time. Thereby I would cancel the noise reduction. But as this is quite uncomfortable I ask myself if there are better ways to fix this issues.
Do you also have similar problems, especially when it comes to conference calls?
Did you find workarounds for those issues?
Actually in my country the quality of the calls made out of the type of the Operator...
so I dont think there is something special for this one...

Question on phone arena review

So there is a new review by phonearena:
phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-4-Review_id3812/page/3
In the text they indicate that the speakerphone is very weak not very loud; but in the DB test they show it has the highest DB (loudness). What am I missing ?
Nothing. Makes no sense. I noticed that myself. The units I've played with have been very loud, but the quality of the speaker isn't very good.

Could it be that because the placement of the speaker is in the rear, it doesn't actually project sound very strongly, in comparison to the DB it's putting out?

I have the international exynos version and the speaker is very loud. I was impressed how good it sounds.
Wait, so when talking on the phone the rear speaker is used? Wouldn't that cause everyone around to hear what the other person is speaking? I thought phones have separate front speaker for phone calls...

If you mean without loudspeaker then the speaker on the front of the phone is used otherwise would be the rear speaker if on loudspeaker.
Also I totally disagree with PAs comments on the loud speaker
I was in the samsung store on monday in oxford street and they had two note 4s alongside 2 note 3s. I played the same song on both phones back to back and at the same time the note 4 is clearly louder and the speaker sounds better dispite the rear placement.
I am not one that listens to music through the phones speaker so whether it sounds tinny or punchy I couldn't care less as long as the phone it loud enough for me to hear it ring!!
isn't that supposed to be number 1 point of the speaker to be loud enough to hear the phone ring? after that you can then talk about being bassy and blah blah.
Makes no sense, look at GSM Arena review: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_4-review-1147p7.php they were surprised as well, Excellent Audio Quality.
I'll see in a couple of weeks when can get my hands on mine.

Speakerphone (loudness, clarity)

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the HTC U11's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The speakerphone is total garbage its absolutely awful if you ask me!

Yeah I guess im just used to my htc10 speaker with a sound mod... Much louder!
Not sure what you are talking about, there might exist phones where it's even better, but I actually find it extremely loud and clear! Way better than how I remember the M8 to be when it was new (my speakers somehow degraded over time). And, more importantly, people on the other side hear me very well too, with the M8 they were complaining the whole time when I was using the speakerphone.

There is a sound mod in viper rom. It made the u11 speakerphone louder for me from what I could tell.
Previously I had Axon 7 and its speakers were much better than those in u11.

Which mode is that, coz my HTC 10 loud speaker wasn't as loud as my HTC One m9
Today I took a shower and during that shower I realized I feel like listening to some music. so use the magic words and I spoke to my phone I said to him ok Google Play Coldplay music in Spotify.
Then the volume was too low, so I spoke to magic words again and ask my phone to increase the volume it worked out just fine.
Awesome!!!

Your speakers may or may have not degraded.
The speakers from my M9 were very quiet at some point and the sound sounded like it was cracking.
The problem was that dust got in the grille.
So i just took a toothbrush (dont forget to dry it before using it) and took out the dust.
You have to swipe towards the screen to get the dust out.
One of those small brushes used to clean hair trimmers is good too.
I first saw it here and it actually worked:
https://youtu.be/-NngAUWHHyo
I'm very happy with the speaker. I compare it to my older S6 and my temp OnePlus 5 and the sound coming from the U11 is much richer and warmer. It might not be as loud as the OP5 but the definition is much better where the OP5 sounds louder but very thin and high pitched.
Can someone tell me about the quality of ear piece ? Is it loud enough for hearing the caller from other side in noisy environment ?
Well the quality is amazing but the volume is extremely low unless you crank it to 100...but if you combine it with Viper4Android just use the "eXtra Loud" option set to extreme and Max Gain 4x and max output to 0dB... then half volume is now loud and the quality is still there
Coming from the iPhone 8 the volume is very low and distinct lack of bass.
Quite disappointed to the point I thought my unit was defective.
Hi,
for me,my M8 sounds better then my new U11.
