[Nexus 4][MOD] Improve Touch Screen Sensitivity - Nexus 4 Android Development

Hey guys,
The Android 4.3 update for the Nexus 4, in my opinion, has majorly improved the touch screen sensitivity of the Nexus 4, therefore I believe this mod is irrelevant. For those who still want to use it, its still here.
Hey guys,
First of all, I would like to say thanks to trter10 who made the original thread for this. Unfortunately, that thread has been abandoned by the OP and forgotten about. Therefore, I have decided to make this thread. In fact, the mod that I made, in my opinion, is much better than the one in that thread.
As many of us, Nexus 4 users, have come to realize, the device's touch screen sensitivity is way below par when it comes to today's day and age. It has been pointed out that this is due to some changes in the latest touch screen driver from Synaptics, E027. An earlier driver, E015, had much better sensitivity and therefore downgrading to it improves touch screen sensitivity significantly.
There are two ways to downgrade the driver. The first way is the easiest but it doesn't work for everybody, such as people (like me) who use custom kernels like Franco Kernel. I don't know why it doesn't work, but that's the way it is.
First Method:
What You Need:
Root - If you don't have it, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
A custom recovery - If you don't have it, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Busybox - If you don't have it, get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
init.d support - If you don't have, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933849
What This Does:
Puts an init.d script in the init.d folder. This script will install the E015 driver on boot.
Places the driver in /system for the script to use.
Instructions:
Extract Method 1.zip.
Boot in to your custom recovery.
Install E015-TouchDriver-Mako.zip
Reboot.
Instructions to Revert:
Boot in to your custom recovery.
Install E015-TouchDriver-Mako-Revert.zip
Reboot.
Notes:
After boot, your touchscreen will be unresponsive for around 30 seconds.
After flashing a ROM, you will need to install this zip again.
I am not responsible for any damage this modification may cause.
Second Method:
What You Need:
Root - If you don't have it, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Busybox - If you don't have it, get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
Script Manager - SManager - If you don't have it, get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager
Instructions:
Extract Method 2.zip.
Using any android file explorer, place SynaImage.E015.bin in /sdcard.
Using any android file explorer, place the E015TouchDriverDowngrade script in any location you want on your internal SD card (I placed it in /sdcard/Scripts).
Go into Smanager, navigate to the E015TouchDriverDowngrade script and press on it.
Select the following options: Fav, Su.
Press Run.
The touch screen will be disabled for the next 15-30 seconds.
From now on, on every reboot you need to perform the following steps in order to downgrade the touchscreen driver:
Go into Smanager, click on options -> Scripts -> E015TouchDriverDowngrade -> Run.
Enjoy!
Notes:
After a reboot, your touchscreen will be unresponsive for around 20 seconds because the kernel is reflashing the new touch screen driver (E027).
After selecting Run your touch screen won't work for 15-30 seconds if it does work, the old touch driver is not being flashed.
I am not responsible for any damage this modification may cause.
Enjoy!

Like a known issue you could say the ~30 sec delay on boot and on recovery (I know its already in notes)

Re: [MOD] Improve Touch Screen Sensitivity
@OP what is different about your zip than the original one in the thread below. Does yours work with 4.2.2 and the original does not? Is that the main difference? If so please state that in your OP. Thanks

Well, from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 they didn't fix it, so probably not.

Works fantastically, thank you!
on aokp build 3 for anyone who's curious.

Will not look back!!
Works as advertised on PA 3.0 (24FEB) I can finally type a message in portrait without it making me feel like I have no clue how to type. I would consistently hit letters and they would not register, just did a test and tapped a whole paragraph with not one error. Thank you very much.

Re: [MOD] Improve Touch Screen Sensitivity
Thanks for this! Going to install this now and try if the delay is shorter. The previous one was annoying that I disabled.
Beamed from my very paranoid and harsh Nexus⁴

Got rid of the 30 second delay being a known issue since it's part of the mod and is mentioned in notes.
I will be away for a week so I won't be able to support the thread for that time, happy flashing!

When you boot into recovery just wait a minute for the touch screen to start responding then carry on as normal.
Whats happening is the touch driver is being reflahed back to 027 one.

Thanks man! It's great to see more dev work on the VZW LTE tabs. Does this rom have a fix for the "volume warning" issue when playing media over line output? My tab cuts volume to 70% and displays a warning about how loud volume can damage your hearing. I use my tab in my car, so it's a right pain to have to adjust the volume every other song.
Updated OP with v1.1.

I haven't looked at it, but I know what your talking about. I only have to change the volume once on mine, though. I'll see if I can find anything on it.
Hey Hyde...
Love the rom... working great for me.. I got a couple things though..
as a request.. is there anyway you can look into making the ext sd card the main storage device so we can get more room on this tab?
and idk if its just me or not.. but I'm having very bad battery life running this rom.. I love the rom, don't get me wrong.. but my tab is dying overnight for the last few days since I flashed this rom.. I have no idea why? maybe the kernal that is included?
I am looking in to the SD card thing whenever I have time.
I noticed this battery drain too... not sure what it is. I'm gonna be testing it tonight. I doubt its the kernel as the kernel itself is 100% stock. Only mods are to some of the configuration files, not the zimage.

Ok great.. thanks hyde..
good luck on finding the culprit that is draining our batteries! hopefully you can figure it out
Ok, So I know it's not the kernel. Flahsed it over a restored stock J1 base and battery only drained 1% in 1 hour. So there's something screwy in my ROM.
Scott released a ROM also that isn't too much different than this, and honestly probably better haha. This is my first ROM ever, so go easy on me
Scotts ROM is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2022879. You can flash the DecafKernel (based off of Scotts init.d unsecure kernel) over on top of it for custom boot animation support.
Ok, so it IS my kernel..................... Still looking into it.
Updated OP. Check Change Log for changes. Battery drain workaround so your battery won't die over night.
It's not ur kernel. I been running it for 2 days now. With out charging my tablet. It's j1 update crashing with open source code kernel.. Therefore you can't use this kernel on the j1. Sorry
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
It was actually. And it's based off the J1 unsecure kernel from Scott.
When you unpack the boot.img, under the ramdisk directory there is a file: init.rc
In this file there are several sections:
service powersnd .../.../...
...
service samsungani .../.../...
...
You have to add a 'service bootanim /system/bin/bootanimation' and another group of code that I can't remember off the top of my head. If you remove powersnd and samsungani, OR you remove bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg, the kernel defaults to the performance governor. With this in mind, service powersnd, service samsungani, bootsamsung.qmg, and bootsamsungloop.qmg must all remain as part of the ROM. I don't know why, but I've found another thread for the S3 with the same issue. Now I'm sure if it was compiled from source with these modifications it'd be a different story, but I haven't had the time to dig through that yet.
I'm running this latest release with the J1 kernel and J1 system and it's running great
OK I'm pretty stupid I guess but I didn't presume I would have any issues. I tried to go from this ROM to my backup of the J1 using CWM recovery. Now I'm pretty sure I've soft bricked the tablet because recovery wiped system but errored out on writing the /system backup. So I can't restore the backup I have and flashing this ROM again does nothing because its not a full /system.
Anyhow I'm gonna wait till I get home from family dinner and try to break it out of a recovery boot loop with a fresh ODIN flash...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
That is odd. Perhaps your backup got corrupted? But then cwm should have caught it via md5 check... I've reverted to an older cwm several times and haven't had an issue.
Let us know the what happens.

[ROM] Ubuntu Touch Preview [03/01: Audio fix]

** Work-In-Progress: Ubuntu Touch Preview is just that.. a PREVIEW. Do not complain about missing features, etc. The OS isn't nearly ready for primetime. **
Curious as to how the Ubuntu Touch Preview looks? Why not load it on your Droid 4 and see for yourself.
Instructions:
1. Make a Titanium Backup and/or backup in recovery of your current Android (or just keep it on a another rom-slot). This preview is fun to play with but not a replacement for something as developed as CM 10.1
2. Download the Bionic Mini-Android base for Ubuntu Touch and place it on your device:
[03/01] http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/maserati/ubuntu-phablet/ (use the newest one)
3. Download the latest Ubuntu Touch Preview Filesystem .zip from Ubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip
If the above link is broken, use this link for a full listing of the current build files (download the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip .. soon to be raring-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip):
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/
4. Reboot into Safestrap. Create a NEW 2GB ROM in the #4 slot.
IMPORTANT:
4a. Install the quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip FIRST, and then the phablet-2013xxxx.zip SECOND.
5. Reboot and Enjoy
FIRST BOOT TAKES A LONG TIME. AND THERE'S NO BOOT ANIMATION. BE PATIENT (MAYBE 3-4 MINUTES).
WHAT WORKS:
Display
Touch screen
Wifi
Audio
WHAT DOESN'T WORK:
There's so much that is still being implemented into the Touch version of Ubuntu, that this list could get pretty long.
Barely any sensors other than touchscreen work. IE: no rotation, etc. Ubuntu WIP issue.
No HD codecs (still being worked on) Ubuntu WIP issue.
No screen timeout / auto blank -- be careful when walking away from the device. Need to press the power button to turn the screen off. Ubuntu WIP issue.

Ubuntu is fun to play with, but android it ain't. Cannocal has a long way to go, but I am seeing potential here. I personally am not a fan of gesture based navigation so I found it slightly frustrating to find my way around the os but I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
Sent from my XT894 using Tapatalk 2
Well a preview is def a preview. It was fun to have it running so well! Thanks hash!
I did find the navigation interesting, but it wasn't until I couldn't use my android navigation habits that I realized how much I would miss them.

It is the recovery.img outputted by cm-10.1 build
So, if you have a shared boot/recovery kernel, it will work only on cm-10.1 ROMs until someone repacks it for stock ROMs
If you have a dedicated recovery partition, you can flash without much trouble, in theory...
But, I am not responsible of any damage. This is mainly for devs or advanced users knowing what I am talking about
Consider it as really early preview until it is better tested.
@[NUT] compiled open source version and all was working he said. So, I do not expect big issues

You did a huge debugging and contributed a lot to make this project last, when it started timidly a year ago

Also, the Aroma File Manager needs an additional zip no?
EDIT: Looks like the touch is registered. I get a haptic feedback when I tap anywhere on the screen. But just can't use it.

Great it boots and works
Maybe touch needs extra kernel enablers or echo to some /sys/.../touch path
Unless the device has flipped x/y axis. In that case, touch events should register but not considered most of the time
If screen reacts to touch under some parts/scrolls, it is second case, else first

Seems like the first case. It does not react except for the haptic feedback. However, when I open the log in the advanced menu and it prompts to press any key to continue, touching the screen registers as a key press and it returns to the previous menu.
EDIT: I could upload TWRP recovery which has touch working if that would help.

Seems like the first case. It does not react except for the haptic feedback. However, when I open the log in the advanced menu and it prompts to press any key to continue, touching the screen registers as a key press and it returns to the previous menu.

Humm
Seems like touch is working then, else you won't get any feedback
I will look at TWRP to see if device has flipped or inversed axis
Else, I will release a touch debug version to see what's going
If you need the TWRP release for this phone

XZDualRecovery 2.7.10 BETA contains your PhilZ Touch Recovery. It (not very surprisingly) has the touch screen bug described as above by others. This version is now working fine on locked bootloader devices, except the bugs of course

Thank you a lot (out of my :good: today)
I will look at touch later
Le me know about any other bugs
Meanwhile, can someone repack with twrp recovery kernel and ramdisk files (init, *.rc and files in root) to see if it fixes touch
That's to be sure it is not a kernel issue not having touch enabled

Ok, I replaced the init, *.rc files and same problem. No touch response. Anything else I need to replace from TWRP?

not quite sure how to take a photo, if I slide to the left it toggles the screen brightness, if I toggle to the right the screen goes blank and restarts the phone
edit
actually it's the other way round (slide right brightness, slide left blank and reboot)

Long press of 2 sec takes pic

Did so and still restarts after a minute or two :/
Btw, THANK YOU FOR BUILDING THIS! I've been wanting to throw my phone and claw my eyes out over Twrp the last few days, corrupted my cache and system partitions among other things, fun time to fix it.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
idk if this will help you or not, restart happens regardless of touching it. tried doing a backup and later starting aromafm and it restarts. Log is attached ^^
Update fix2:
http://d-h.st/74F
- bigger font
- enable exfat on external storage (sorry, will need an extra derp on next update)
- fix mount point for external storage
- disable some QCOM display parts
- more stock parts, include selinux permissions
Let me know how it goes. Seems to be a long debugging step by step until we get a dev with a device release a proper device tree or repack from my base

Downloaded and installed!
Menu Looks *perfect* now!
Still getting the same random reboots after about 2 minutes in recovery, already tried disabling 'Dim display' and "screen off" to no avail.
Is this working yet?

For me it's not yet, Idk about anyone else. I get about 2 minutes to do whatever I wanna do in recovery before it restarts the phone.. was successfully able to flash a couple small quick things tho.. just not enough time to flash a Rom or do a backup yet.

I need a log
When it reboots by its self, let it go to the rom
Grab all files in /cache/recovery and post them in a zip here.
That way i can see what is happening

Q&A for [ROM]★★[KitKat 4.4.2][CROMi-X 7.0.3][11.4.1.17][Sep 22]★★
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer. Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
[ROM]★★[KitKat 4.4.2][CROMi-X 7.0.3][11.4.1.17][Sep 22]
After 3-5 minutes giving the tablet sound is muted, no sound at all, is to listen to music in games or videos, regardless of the program.

Not seen that issue - can you provide more info?
When I put videos on youtube for the smallest my view, the type passed 3-5 minutes, the tablet loses completely the sound even at maximum volume setting is completely silent.
The same happens when I'm playing, past the same time is completely without sound, but everything still works perfectly.
Also can not understand, so sometimes when I restart or getting much time off (sleep) is to give back to sound.

process com.android.systemui has stopped
Last two days, can't use my tablet! Every 5-10minutes i get "process com.android.systemui has stopped" and the tablet suspends. Tried to reflash with hard reset, wiped all e.t.c. but nothing. Launcher - Apex. The SuperSu has updated with install zip in recovery, just after flashing ROM. (if i don't update in recpovery it wants to update throw market. and asks to load binaries... ) what can i do?
By the way if i don't flash the asus clock widget, and install google clock the font of the HOURS is semi cut (i see only half of the number by horizontal). Is that right?
P.S. What the right settings for dpi in install - I left he default 320, but on the tablet description I always see 300 (299) but not the 320. Which is right?
Hello everyone!
First of all a big thanks to sdbags for the great rom, which I use from the moment I was able to unlock my tablet!
However, lately, I am experiencing an unusual battery drain which I was not able to resolve yet. From the app BetterBatteryStats I see that my tablet is never going to deep sleep. This is apparently not due to a user wakelock (these are all in the millipercent range) but due to a kernel wakelock. However, since kernel wakelock stats are disabled in all kernels provided with CROMi-X, I can't find out the cause of my drain.
Thus I would like to recompile the kernel myself, with kernel wakelock stats enabled. Can anyone of you tell me where I can find current kernel sources for the TF701T and maybe give me some indication which compiler would be suited best.
Once compiled, I will of course share my modified kernel to anyone interested in accurate battery stats.

Thanks for the info, completely oversaw that one.
Do you use any specific toolchain like linaro or standard android to build your kernels?

Can't flash CWM 6.0.5.0 Hi, I can't flash tf701_cwm_6050.img using command "fastboot
Hi,
I can't flash tf701_cwm_6050.img using command "fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery tf701_cwm_6050.img". My TF700t freezes after that.
But I can successfully flash recovery.img from droidbasement or recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.7-tf700t.img without issues.
I suspect that there is difference in format and I should use different method to flash tf701_cwm_6050.img.
I think so because recovery.img file content starts from "-SIGNED-BY-SIGNBLOB-.." but tf701_cwm_6050.img file content starts with "ANDROID!..."
Can you help me flash to CWM 6.0.5.0?

This might sound like a stupid question, but how do i enable weather in the notification pulldown as pictures in the OP (picture attached). I keep looking but cant find the setting for it.
Thanks
The same battery and dock issue for me...
you are the man!!!! this works!

Is it just me or bluetooth does not work on the rom? When i turn it on it automatically turns itself off. thanks

Not just you - this happened to me recently as well!
I ended up reinstalling the ROM at one point and that cleared the problem. I wasn't able to figure out what caused it however...

No, it's not working ...
And, can I install the new bootloader, without using the 7.1 beta 2 install?
(Using it with my 7.03 install)
Thanks for the help !

Hmm just tried and it swipes away fine...
I never tested the boot loader on 7.0.3 but it *should* work.
For me 7.1 is an improvement over 7.0.3.
Loving this rom.
I have a question. How do you change the min and max processor speeds - permanently?
Mine seems to be stuck north of 1900???
Thanks
