[Dev] Ubuntu touch for 10.1v - Galaxy Tab 10.1v Android Development

With the advice of pruano I've started this tread to get some possible development of Ubuntu touch for our device going.
I've found out that Ubuntu touch is an chroot of CM10.1
and came acros a port guide.
i'm willing to give it a chance but have no experience.
maybe with the help of devs we an get it running.

I believe this is the link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
I already downloaded the repo and compiled an image but had no success running it.
Device boots but screen is black and I have no adb connection so don't know what's going on.
I need some help to debug the system in this state (logging to a file if it does even boot).
Does anyone know how to do this logging (kernel messages I believe).
Also, can I use the prebuilt kernel for Ubuntu, or I need to compile it from source?
Thanks!

Well okay, found answer to most of my questions.
Will do some testing when I have time.

I managed to boot Ubuntu Touch. :victory:
It is looking good and is a bit laggy but usable.
Currently wifi is not working and ubuntu has to be started manually from adb.
Trying to make more progress tomorrow.
Here's a screenshot for now

Status:
Device specific build of Ubuntu's minimal cm10.1 build ready
Ready for flashing
Working:
Touch screen
ADB
Browser (Although no net access yet)
You can browse and get a feel of the entire OS, including the homescreen (unity desktop), multitasking (the cool new way to switch between apps), etc.
Since it is a preview, many apps are dummy apps.

Check them out here

Here is a video of the fresh new OS in action on the O2x made by JordanRulz
Download links:
Ubuntu touch preview (raring ringtail)
Current build of Ubuntu-CM10.1 (old bootloader)
New bootloader build by delaya73:
cm-10.1-20130604-UNOFFICIAL-p990.zip
Older Ubuntu phone quantal image
older build 2 of Ubuntu-CM10.1 by delaya73
older build 1 of Ubuntu-CM10.1 by delaya73 for the new bootloader
TWRP latest version is recommended (CWM 6.x may work too)
Note:
The raring/quantal image is large, but thankfully gets installed on the data partition, thus saving our small system partition the burden
Source:
Ubuntu-cm10 source
Building instructions:
Building instructions are similar to building CM10 (refer Raum's guide) till repo sync (instead of official cm10 repo, use above source during repo init)
Dont forget to add device props in "local_manifests" (local_manifest.xml is deprecated). Add the following in local_manifests:
Code:
(Taken from Raum's guide, thanks to him)
After syncing the repo,
1. cd device/lge/p990, connect your device running cm10.1 with usb debugging on, and then ./extract-files.sh
2. In device/lge/p990/fstab.p990, remove "nosuid" from data partition
3. In kernel/lge/star/arch/arm/configs, in cyanogenmod_p990_defconfig, add the following:
Code:
CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y
CONFIG_NAMESPACES=y
CONFIG_UTS_NS=y
CONFIG_IPC_NS=y
CONFIG_USER_NS=y
CONFIG_PID_NS=y
CONFIG_NET_NS=y
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y
CONFIG_DEVPTS_MULTIPLE_INSTANCES=y
CONFIG_FSNOTIFY=y
CONFIG_DNOTIFY=y
CONFIG_INOTIFY_USER=y
CONFIG_FANOTIFY=y
CONFIG_FANOTIFY_ACCESS_PERMISSIONS=y
CONFIG_FSNOTIFY=y
CONFIG_SWAP=y
# CONFIG_ANDROID_PARANOID_NETWORK is not set
4. Go to ubuntu folder inside your source folder and do
Code:
bzr branch lp:phablet-extras/libhybris hybris
bzr branch lp:platform-api platform-api
If you didnt have bzr, get it first using
Code:
sudo apt-get install bzr
Now you can build. This build would be for the old bootloader. For the new one, make these changes said by pengus77 here
Flashing instructions:
1. Make a full wipe (wipe data + format /system)
2. Flash the current build and raring/quantal image
Then flash this afterflash.zip
3. Reboot
Credits:

Boot animation comes from the Ubuntu-cm10.1 build and is the default cm10 boot animation. Since your tablet's Ubuntu image was released directly by canonical, they must have removed the cm10 boot animation before releasing it

Ricardo is always a name in every project of the O2x, and he is a part of the CM team, in case you didnt know
But thanks for the reminder, I explicitly specified his name too now, deserves so much credit for bringing CM10 to our device.
Tonyp is a great contributor and we are thankful for all his work. But this is a ROM, and TWRP is a recovery used to flash a ROM, they have non-overlapping work. What I mean is, this ROM doesnt use TWRP's work, rather it can be flashed in TWRP or CWM6.
By your logic, Koushik Datta (developer of CWM and one of the best android devs) should be included in every ROM's credits here. Also, creators of USB, personal computers, internet, world wide web, which are also tools used in the process of flashing it.
(No offense meant to any of the above, they are all revolutionary people whom I greatly respect)
My point is, if I am using someone's work in this project/ROM, thats the person whose name goes in credits, not the one who is creating the tools to install it.
It's better if the discussion doesnt go further about this off-topic thing, if you find that I have used anyone's work in this ROM and not given credits, please let me know, thanks
Let's try to make Ubuntu Phone OS boot on our phone. Thats the priority here. Didn't get much time today, got college this week too, will see if I get time to work on it soon

[ROM][P6800][OnHold]Ubuntu-touch dev preview(18.03.2013)

I have put this project on hold for now. I flashed latest Austrian ICS build to my device and continue using it as my Kindle reader on my travels. IF somone manages to fix the two issues with kernel, send me a message and I'll continue working with the repository. But for now I'm not thinking nor touching the subject before Easter. Thank you for participating for now
I've started porting Ubuntu-touch dev-preview to the Galaxy Tab 7.7 (3g). If you do not understand it already, you flash this at your own risk. There is now also a Ubuntu-touch specific device page here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices/p6800. I'll try to keep this thread and the Ubuntu devices page as close to each other as possible.
Big thanks to Daniel_hk for helping with boot.img Now It can be booted, but the screen is still black
Also, without working wifi and display, the preview is basically unusable... Next steps should be these:

Ubuntu-touch dev-preview is flashable.
It boots!
Known Issues
Kernel is based to the CyanogenMod/android_kernel_samsung_smdk4210, but it is a mess. So forked it, took code here and there (mostly from locerra's JB build).
Kernel is based 3.0.15 and no newer one available (yet).
Most of the drivers in kernel had to be turned off, because build was not succeeding...
bluetooth: Doesn't work
audio: Dock audio doesn't work.
hwcomposer: HDMI dongle doesn't work.
wifi: Doesn't work.
camera: Doesn't work.
.. and lot of kernel level bugs for sure.
Displaydrivers are not working (yet).
Release notes
Version 0.2 (13.03.2013) - Now it boots, see release notes
Version 0.1 (07.03.2013) - Intial release, nothing works

I cannot test it for anything else. The kernel sources are from CM10.1 that was in use from locerra, so in theory it should work with i815 and with p6810 as well. But I cannot give you any guarantees...
And also before I get this build to even start with my device, I do not think that sharing image would help anyone. But if you are a developer, I would like to talk with you on issues that I might have missed or done wrong. So contact me

Not much. The generated image is missing /data/ubuntu completely and that is the reason why the image does not boot. I got also flu and fewer, so I have had not that much time after the weekend to look on the issues on that.
I'm also waiting if I get any answers from Ubuntu touch emailing list regarding the problem and where to look for answers, but my quess is that it has something to do with the devices fstab file...
Good news everyone!
Just got a very good answer the problem I had with the /data/ubuntu-folder missing from the image. There was no image provided for the actual Ubuntu at all by the build-process...
When I get home from work, I'll try to find time to look into the build process if I can include the actual Ubuntu image to the ready made image and then release it after I get my device to boot. But it seems that I got the right nudge forward for this now :highfive:
Hmpf, still not booting. Now the /data/ubuntu logs are unmodified, which would point towards kernel or fstab-issue (ie. /data/ubuntu is never used...).

Ok, new version build from different repositories (thx, danile_hk for tip).
I'll test the new image this evening when I get back to home, and I have my fingers crossed that I can get the device to boot up and even display something useful. After that I can start looking for ubuntu developemnt
New version did not work, but then Daniel_hk gave me working boot.img. So now I need to find out what the heck is wrong with my repository and fix it so that I can get working boot.img from start and also the device configuration has issues. Both repositories are currently out of sync I'm afraid

It seems that I hit the wall (again) with the mentioned big issues.
For now, I keep some sabbatical from Ubuntu Touch things (ie. I flashed ICS Austria to my device) and use it as my Kindle reader again.
If by miracle I get more info regarding how to get the Kernel working with Ubuntu Touch, then by allmeans I continue working with this project. So far it just seems that making a working image, is out of my hands currently.
At least you had a go. Thanks for your efforts, and hope you might have another crack at it later on.
I'm feeling a little bit that way right now too, and put my ICS kernel on the back burner. I think I'm trying to multitask a little too much at times....
Yep, a break is what you need, maybe some clarity will come after you've had a chance to recharge.

But this wont go forward that much, if the GT-P6800 wont get official CM10.1 update...

Ubuntu Touch not booting

Hi to all, this time I'm trying to port Ubuntu Touch, I have built device-specific zip file for Ubuntu Touch but after installing it and daily preinstalled Ubuntu armhf image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ doesn't boot, no black screen, only Galaxy bootscreen, in kernel's defconfig I've done all modifications listed on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting and compiled with brunch janice

ADB not working in bootscreen, last_kmsg is useless because to enable ADB I have to enter in recovery so the file is overwritten. With device-specific package the recovery's graphic changes according to Ubuntu, and flashing a CM kernel boots the Android part (I can see CM bootanimation, but OS obviously doesn't load). Maybe the problem is in the kernel's ramdisk, I have to add something to init.rc or change BOOTCLASSPATH to boot Ubuntu?

I don't think the project will be succesful.As you know we even can't get a proper AOSP ROM and Cyanogens are unofficial and we should hope another OS ?
But of course I'm not hate just saying; maybe my knowledge would be false, thanks for work.

This project is just for test, the OS is based on CM kernel, so it should be boot if all is done correctly, I think that the error is in the kernel's ramdisk

Are there any realistic chances that there will ever be a Ubuntu Touch OS for this phone? I mean i certainly do not ask for a ETA. But i would love to have a Ubuntu Touch on my phone. If this is not possible then Ohhhkehhh no problem. So will there any further progress on this or not?
Finally something moves! I recompiled again with other changes, now after installing device-specific zip file and preinstalled image I get a bootloop with a black screen for 5 seconds, so kernel tries to boot OS but unfortunately I can't use ADB shell because is not working...
If any dev can/wants to help me is welcome! Two brains are better than one...
Uart. You need uart to debug it if the kernel cannot reach the point of loading adb!

Try starting adb service on early-init and start services using logwrapper binary to debug

Okay, I will try this
I upload device-specific zip on my dev-host as soon as I can, so if a dev wants to take a look into it he can

That's my data partition pretty sure you have the same issue. Now if I can change the features I should be ok
Code:

dead or undead?
So is this it now for our Ubuntu Touch hopes?
Will there be anything done?
Or is this here just a relict of a dead end road?
I would love to see Ubuntu on my phone and certainly i am not the only one - but if it will not be possible then please just tell me and i will check for compatibility on a future phone i will buy just to be sure.

I can see the desperation in you for Ubuntu touch, good. Then why don't you try yourself and contribute to others instead of cribbing here. Your post sounded very rude, sorry to say this.

No ETAs please. I am still working on it. Btw, Nexus devices have the maximum compatibility by Canonical, but issues too.

Sorry.
I did not want to:
- offend anybody or anything
- ask for ETA
- sound rude in any way
I was asking if there is still work in progress or if this is totally abandoned.
This was answered by Tesla and i am grateful to hear that he is still working on it.
So please excuse me for writing words that can be misunderstood.
For participating:
I have some minor Linux skills and compiled some kernels due to real time audio applications within linuxmint and opensuse.
I work as a 3d design egineer for special machines.
I never had the time to get into compiling ubuntu touch (married and 2 kids and a - but if you think my skills would be of help please feel free to contact me via pm and i will do what i can to help you or anybody who needs help with the issue.

[PORT] Ubuntu Touch for Nexus 5

Hi guys.
A few days ago, I've started the porting of Ubuntu Touch for Nexus 5 (hammerhead).
Changelog:
Spoiler
*** 4/1/2013 - 17:57 ***
Solved kernel problems. Now there are complications in the ROM. The system does not start despite loads all the drivers. He stands on the bootanimation with frame drops and brightness that goes from low to maximum. Adb works. MTP drivers are detected but not loading.
*** 2/1/2013 - 18:53 ***
Kernel need some changes, in cyanogenmod_hammerhead_defconfig first:
Code:
CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y
CONFIG_NAMESPACES=y
CONFIG_UTS_NS=y
CONFIG_IPC_NS=y
CONFIG_USER_NS=y
CONFIG_PID_NS=y
CONFIG_NET_NS=y
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y
CONFIG_DEVPTS_MULTIPLE_INSTANCES=y
CONFIG_FSNOTIFY=y
CONFIG_DNOTIFY=y
CONFIG_INOTIFY_USER=y
CONFIG_FANOTIFY=y
CONFIG_FANOTIFY_ACCESS_PERMISSIONS=y
CONFIG_SWAP=y
# CONFIG_ANDROID_PARANOID_NETWORK is not set
CONFIG_VT=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
and AppArmor second.
You can found some infos here: Touch/Porting - Ubuntu Wiki #kernel[/QUOTE]
I need some help on ROM now: Any of you wants to help me? Contact me in PM.
First Alpha coming when anyone help me to understand the problem.

Ubuntu touch has the official support for only Nexus 4 right?
In the wiki they have mentioned as other nexus devices should work *theoretically*
Can you post a logcat or dmesg while the system is booting?

Theoretically! It not boot because I have some trouble to repack kernel and create android-ramdisk.img for hammerhead. If you have some ideas for that, you are welcome.

hi guy I wish very good luck waiting to use it!
Will Dual-Boot Android / Ubuntu be possible?
Off-Topic: I searched but find nothing. Is there already a project porting FirefoxOS?

I cannot reply you because I'm working for now only on Ubuntu Touch and Android. When Touch work perfectly, I'll work on FirefoxOS.

Thanks OP! Go ahead and good luck with your porting and development. We will then have some more choice on using OS for our Nexus 5.

Holy crap! I'm totally watching the progress of this project! I'll gladly help alpha/beta test! Eagerly awaiting a download and install tutorial!
Also, I totally recommend heading on over to the #ubuntu-touch iRC channel if you're having any issues or experiencing roadblocks, as you seem to be at the moment. I'm not a developer. I'm just a mere enthusiast... but I'll do what I can to help make this UT ROM the best it can be. My hope would be that Cannonical themselves will bring out/release something at/before CES this year... but OP if you can add something into your version that the official one won't have, then that'd be awesome... like maybe KDE Plasma Active for the UI instead of Unity... I can dream right?
Update:
Completed kernel parts. Miss AppArmor. After the repack of the kernel, if Ubuntu boot, I'll work on AppArmor. If you have suggestions, you're welcome.

Watching this project closely. With the specs of N5 and if this pulls off it would be a pretty amazing (read: fast) Ubuntu port to N5.
EDIT: if you need a tester I could help, just not with the coding stuff xD
Update 2
Update:
Kernel problems solved. Now there are complications in the ROM. The system doesn't start despite loads all the drivers. He stands on the bootanimation with frame drops and brightness that goes from low to maximum.
I can be a tester, too.
I'm really looking forward to a funktional Ubuntu touch on my N5...
So.... Good luck...
Greetz, Echse...
Nexus 5 rocks!...
