So is the screen THAT bad? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
As i am today a not very-pleased s3 owner, i decided that i will give Sony a try for the first time. After looking much at especially the V and the Z, i`ve decided that the Z will be the phone i will enough pleased with.
Anyway, i habe been reeding alot about this phone the last days, and i keep reading that the screen is not "good" enough, and that is something that concerns me.
So i am asking YOU GUYS that are a lucky owner of the Xperia Z; How does the screen feel like? Is it relly THAT bad as people is talking about? I really want this phone. I love sonys interface and water+dust proof is a must for me these days.
I hope someone can give me a good answer.
Appreciated !

Honestly go out and check it out for yourself.
Everyone will and can have their own opinion, but in the end it is your choice.
I for one like it

Thanks for responding!
I would love to check it out, but here in Norway we dont get it before 6-10Mars. I went to the store today to check out the display on the Xperia V, and i gotta say i liked it alot more than my Amoled S3.

AW: So is the screen THAT bad?
Screen is just fine. Lots of exageration.
The vieweing angles are sub-premium, this is true, but perfectly ok. First its only the colours which wash out a bit, its not like you wouldnt see anything anymore plus, to be honest, how often and for jow long do you look at your phone flat and sideways...?
I like the screen a lot. Nice colours to look at, insane resolution and pixel density , everything is so damn crisp and clear. I mean hello, its a flaghship after all, they dont dare to put utter bull**** in it. As I said, lots of exaggeration.

TFT with high resolution. Colors are bad.
Regards

Yesterday I tested 3 Xperia Z with bright pixel. But finally got one that has none.

Depends on your definition of good colors.
When looking at photos vs one x without BE turned on colors are pretty close to the real thing including vibrancy and saturation. Now if you are the kind of person that likes unhealthy yellow skin tones, better than real life colors than yeah colors are no good. When people say it looks washed out they actually mean it is not punchy the truth is that when you look at the real world vs s3 and one x the real world seems to be washed out

Stop this BS already... screen is very good.
The only "problem" with it is colour saturation in UI. When BE2 kicks in, and you're on 60%+ brightness, colours and brightness are amazing. And since BE2 doesn't change the screen's physical properties - it means that the screen itself is perfectly fine. The only thing you can be unhappy with is UI's default saturation values, which are quite low, probably to make the difference between media and UI very noticable.
Also, it's true - "washed out" colours are actually a lot closer to natural colours. If you want very saturated colours all the time - you might not be satisfied. If you want completely oversaturated colours - go for AMOLED, they're amazing in producing rich, highly saturated colours.

For me, coming straight from an S3 to this, it really does look washed out, no mater how you look at it.
However, I think that this is because the S3 had very over saturated colours. If you do decide to go for the XZ, you'll be disappointed at first, but it feels much more premium and you'll start to realise that the S3 seemed like it was in Shop Display Mode all the time!
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but don't be downhearted if you go for it and you're initially unhappy with the screen.
EDIT:
Which is basically what everyone else has already said here.

Maybe Sony should have added a samsung mode where it sets the saturation up to 120%, the contrast to .800 and maximum brightness to 50% so you can't see anything when outdoors.

I think you'll be happy with the screen if you upgraded from other xperia family phones. But if you will compare it side by side with other 1080 LCD phones like htc butterfly, hell even with HTC One X which has 720P and a year older, Z can't match overall display quality. Trust your eyes. To see is to believe.

All Sony screens are very good from my past experience, people are just used to over saturated colors that other companies do to their phones. Also, you eyes will strain much less when you look at Sony screens for extended period of times.
Also, I don't understand what's with the ruckus of angle viewing, seriously, how many of you out there actively view the screen from a angle? its just retarded to compare that, it's not even a point.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2

I personally really like the screen. I hated the screen on the s3 and thought the colours looked unnatural and oversaturated. With the XZ, while it may be 'washed out' to some, I actually find the colours, contrast, etc. quite nice to look at and natural. The s3 and the like hurt my eyes. Plus viewing angles aren't half as bad as I expected them to be given all the hysteria regarding them prior to release.

I posted this in the other thread "clearing up the....."
"I have now spent 48 hours with my XZ in the UK. I really like the display. It is sharp, vibrant and realistic in terms of colour and saturation. I could not get on with the amoled display of the HTC desire and the samsung galaxy. Too unrealistic imho. The bravia engine takes it to another level for movies and pictures: It will impress your friends!
I was hesitating with the iminent release of the HTC one. I have absolutley no regrets. It is a beautiful phone and a beautiful display."

well if the only downside is "bad view angles" and "low sturation" its great display because
1. i look my fone from front not side
2. i dont like too saturated colours (red must be red not burning red example)
3. resolution n ppi is high enough to make clear and nice pic

here is some screen comparisons
vs iphone 5

and here is some first impressions & talk about the screen

Overall it looks like a pretty good screen, if you dont care about viewing angles that much you will like it

Looking to purchase Note, what pros and cons.

Hi
I am a happy Galaxy S I9000 owner. And I would like to purchase my next cell phone model. I am looking to Galaxy Note. Would you kindly post your impressions and any pros and cons.
Thanks
Cheers, Darius
Pros - too much to write about (don't have enough time now)
Cons - There's no return to other Smartphones. It's just too addictive .

Thanks for prompt reply
Pros:
- Huge, beautiful, detailed screen
- S-Pen (I use it pretty frequently for taking notes, screenshots etc.)
- Great speed
- ICS coming
- Great camera
- Did I mention the lovely screen?
Cons:
- Notification LED missing (I got used to it on Desire)
- For some the screen might just be too big, so try it out before you buy it.
- You really won't like smaller screens after a few days
Oh and the phone has some difficulties with the black color in films. As I read, it is because the screen has 24-bit color depth, which is uncommon yet amongst programs (to an expert: please correct me if I'm wrong!)
Feel free to ask, if you have further questions!
Hello Darius, I've owned both the SGS1 & 2, and now the Note. I had some misgivings about the Note too, especially since the demo units at the local Samsung shops felt laggy to me. But I did much research and finally got the phone, and it's one of the best decisions I ever made.
Pros:
Huge size makes browsing, checking email and ebook reading a breeze. It's large enough for me to decide to sell off my rooted NookColor as this is much more flexible, portable and has much better features. I find it easier to hold the phone and take photos because of the size, as compared to the SGS2 which was too thin for me to hold comfortably.
Doesn't matter what conflicting information there are out there about pentile display, the screen is beautiful and the colours lovely, not over-saturated like SGS2. Banding is also much better than what the SGS2 suffered from.
Battery life and camera seem comparable to SGS2, if not better. No issues with dead pixels, pink spots, green whatever...I did notice that the display is a tad uneven with a flat grey wallpaper/background, but that was true of my SGS2 as well. In real life I do not use an even toned grey wallpaper, so that doesn't bother me at all. And it's pointless to get all stressed out over little things like that as my life is exciting enough.
The s-pen makes taking notes on the fly so much easier and cooler than digging around for a pen to write on your palm! I like being able to take screen captures too. Hopefully my artistic career will take off because of this phone. Nah...just kidding!
Cons:
Huge size means the self-conscious people may feel somewhat clownish with this. You'll have to put up with a few--not that many--stares, rubber necks and looks of horror from the unenlightened. Those who had owned Palms or are suffering from long sightedness will doubtless praise you for your gorgeous new gadget. Those who wear tight jeans may not be so crazy about it.
It comes with bloatware that slow down the phone (at least for speed freaks like me) and take up space. Thus you may need to root--please read extensively before doing so--in order to freeze or delete the bloatware. This is subjective as some people don't find the bloatware an issue, but I've always rooted my phones and my hands get itchy when I don't. Perhaps once the official ICS comes out, I will no longer need to root as I understand that you can easily delete unwanted apps.
Some apps are not meant for phones this size and may not take up the entire screen, or will look a little soft. So far these tend to be games. It's not a deal breaker for me because I don't play many games and can easily look for alternative games.
And the greatest problem, I feel, is that I may never settle for a smaller phone in the future!

I mean...pray that you won't get one with Dead Pixels like the one that I got recently
I heard there are some screen quality issues with the Note from this forum but didn't think I would be unlucky enough to get one. But guess what....
But hey...I'm sure you will be luckier than me....and apart from that....it's a GREAT device
Well the only issues you would face are with the screen and nothing else. If you are buying at some store do sure to take "dead pixel checker" or "screen test" software with you (in ur older phone). You can transfer em to the new phone via bluetooth and test the screen.
Otherwise U can go to the service menu and check the RGB screens for any dead pixel. Best way to check for dead pixel is to lower the brightness to 0% and take the phone in a dark environment if possible and look from a distance of about 5 inches. Otherwise its really hard to make out dead pixels in bright lights, but if they are there and you are watching a movie at night in the bed, u wont be too happy to find em. As others have said the screen is uneven on gray color. Do check out the grey color and see if there are any smudges and try to see them on other normal screens. If they are not there then all good.
Regarding dead pixels till now, only white stuck pixels have been reported (me a victim as well). And stuck pixels (particularly in this phone) are visible only on grey color. If you have any more doubts dont hesitate to ask, would be glad to help !!!
I have had both. The biggest decision is the screen. Its fantastic to look at and work on but its massive to deal with. I'm sometimes a little scared I may drop the device and one handed is nearly impossible - which is generally not a big deal except for taking pictures sometimes. Jury is still out.

Thank you everybody for sharing. I have already exchanged my SGS to Note. Very happy. Seems to be no dead pixels.

most super amoled srceen does not have dead or stuck pixels, is this because of the density of the screen using the 1280-720 screen, also to hijack the thread, what will ppl consider between the note or galaxy nexus, why i'm asking, i will be getting either one next week, so ppls opinion would be great.

Tired of your washed out screen?

Then let's get Google to fix it.
Star this issue. Right now, it only has 5 stars. Encourage everyone you know who has an Nexus 4 and is annoyed with the washed out and faded colors to star this issue. Maybe we can get better screen calibration in Key Lime Pie.

No but I'm tired of everyone complaining about something which doesn't exist!
The amount of people moaning about this compared to the amount perfectly happy with their phones backs up the fact that this is complete tosh.
And by that I mean the hundreds in this forum, if it even is that many, compared to the thousands in the forum and the.millions out there completely happy with it including reviews.
I for one love the screen and in every real world test side by side.with other phones that I've carried out proved to me and others that the nexus 4 display is true to life as possible and most other displays are.over saturated and un natural.
Bright cartoonish colours and black crush does not mean a good screen.

That's the thing. It is not true to life. Well...it is if you're living a world filled with shades of grey After i installed one of Mole's custom kernels i can say that the difference is STAGGERING. Gamma values are between 2.2 and 2.4 (compared to 1.6-1.7 in stock kernel). RGB standards say that 2.2 is true to life...1.6 isn't

I find the screen to be completely acceptable, and great to use. Only 45 people starred it at the time of writing this post, out of thousands of users (if not more) on Nexus 4 forums. Everyone knows that screen is less saturated and more natural than AMOLED screens, and most people bought it knowing that. They had 15 days to return the device, and they chose to keep it. It's simply a different technology, with advantages and disadvantages. You can do all the calibration you want, it's not gonna look as saturated as AMOLED screens.

The screen is WAY off on gamma. It is improperly calibrated. We are not trying to get over saturated colors. Do you understand?

It's becoming like the 'avforums', where all the boffs with years of audio/visual experience and thousands of pounds of calibrating equipment, give there settings for the 'best' experience with your new £/$1000.00+- set. All discussed in the greatest detail and length.
So you set them, then everyone in the family and friends say over and over "it's too dark" "why's it so dark?" "is there something wrong with it?" ..and so on
eventually you have to agree and whoop up the brightness and contrast and turn the colour down a bit ..that's better
I agree with the original topic .
The screen is inferior .

The screen is great, it looks very sharp, but yes we need some calibration, just a little bit, you can put a O4x side by side with our N4 and see how the colors looks better and the 4x, and yes is the same panel, or maybe the n4 could be better because is newer.

The colour sucks on this screen as tested by EVERYONE including review sites and anandtech who tested it.
Its also clear to see when put next to an iphone or normal TV with decent settings.
Im going to the S4 soon as it lands this phone is just a toy to get me by
I don't get why people continuously start new threads about this non-issue. I previously owned a One XL and people praised that screen as one of the best in its time. After comparing the screen of the N4 and HOX, I prefer the screen on the N4 by far (stock colours). The HOX had a yellowish tint and no one complained about it. I guarantee most people who complain about the screen on the N4 don't even own a high quality IPS monitor. And now that we have pretty much full gamma calibration, go calibrate the screen to your liking.

It really is a lot better.
If you are rooted there is an app that improves the colors a great deal. Is called Nexus 4 Display Control and kids the app store. The optimum color setting is 238, 228, 240. Hope that helps

The screen on stock setting is pretty bad when it comes to calibration.... I used Franco's latest kernel and tried a few gamma settings and found one that MADE STOCK COLORS LOOK LIKE CRAP.
after 4.2.2 was released I decided to flash stock image to take the OTA and I just couldn't believe how horrendous the screen looked.
Seriously, I got used to the colors on stock and never thought the were bad until I was able to tweak the gamma settings. The screen looks absolutely beautiful now.

One X+ VS Nexus 4 - Display Comparison

hi guys
my friend gave me his Ox+ for a while in order to flashing a custom rom.. so.. i struck when the iron was hot
here is my comparison.. just have to say something.. maybe these pictures don't show the reality.. in this topic i'm
trying to make a fair comparison and tell the truth which i saw on my eyes
one other thing.. sorry for my not so good English :cyclops:
both of these devices use LCD technology (IPS HD+ for nexy and super clear LCD on Ox+)
regarding to GsmArena test Nexus has a much brighter display (608 vs 420) but i must say it's not sensible..
and Ox+ provide more contrast (1521 vs 1320) .. well i must say Nexus had more contrast on my eyes and it was sensible!!!!
here is some pics:
right/up is nexus... left/down is Ox+
1st pic; a nature
both of them are damn good!! very sharp displays.. excellent color reproduction, contrast and etc..
i think Ox+ provide a warmer colors.. and nexus had more contrast on my eyes
both of them are pretty close in this pic
2nd: red flower
again.. both of them are verrry good.. but again i must say nexus has more contrast and ox has warmer display
look at the left corner.. white is damn good on nexus but seems yellowish on OX+
3rd : jelly bean..!!
i must say nexus is the obvious winner in this pic.. better contrast.. excellent white and richer color..
4th : pure white
no explanation..! n4 definitely wins here..it provide best white i've ever seen on any device..!!
5th : pure black comparison:
sorry.. i didn't have a good camera to show the real differences.. but i mus say ox+ had better blacks.. although
maybe it's because of brighter display on n4.. but on full brightness i must say ox+ wins
6th: viewing angle
again sorry fir no pic 'cause of camera..
both phones had verry good horizontal and vertical viewing angles.. ox+ was a little darker..
but if view them from the corners ox+ wins..! no changing color and contrast.. very good.. i must give win to One x
let me know if you like it.. :good:
i can make a camera comparison if you want :fingers-crossed:
i must say that i used FauxClock for screen calibration.. it's not fraud..
custom rom/kernel/mod is part of a nexus device

If yes then is this a fair comparison
My friend has a regular One X, and its display is far more rich, bright and responsive (probably the best touchscreen I tried) than the one in the Nexus 4. You can clearly see the differences under direct sunlight.

yeah.. i calibrated N4 color.. but as i said, "modding, custom rom/kernel" is part of a Nexus device.. so.. i think it's definitely fair comparison..!

I'm a previous htc one x owner. Let me tell you, the touchscreen was no better than what i experience in the N4. If anything it was less sensitive. I remember actually holding my thumb down to that ****ing piece of **** you call a screen on the one x hoping for it to react. Regardless, if anything, the N4 is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better on the screen side since 4.3.
I actually hated the ONE x so much that i decided to drop it a second time to shatter the display once and for all after i had already mistakenly dropped it. Piece of ****.
**** that thing. Worst device ever
Drains battery like i drain my **** down the toilet when i have instant diarrhea pills shoved down my throat.
U used wrong calibration, use iphone 5 calibration with franco kernel

Bravia Engine...all time??

So I know that our display is fading when it stands vs HTC, LG, Samsung screen but if we make Bravia Engine always ON the situation changes, the screen could be equal or maybe a little bit better than others with more power consumption.
So its this possible..to have bravia engine in games, homescreen, anywhere in sistem? As I read on the internet I didnt found an exact answer for this question.

Theoretically it would be possible but the battery drain would be enormous ATM, unless Sony delivers some tweaks!
That's probably the reason why they haven't done.that in the first place!
Sony.would be better off with an oled display, tweaking it and sticking the BE2 ENGINE or x-reality into that, saving battery consumption. Then they would be unbeatable for a while!

OK its quite late , but I can suggest you some alternative try it and lemme know..
google is your best friend , search for Screendim.apk and install it
enable it and set the bottom bar ( contrast ) for about 60% and the brightness on top for about 60-70% and now tell me how dark or colorful your screen looks
this defnitely works.. not perfect but close to BE alwasy ON types..

Fanboy alert. You didn't see very grey black, fogged colours, bad view angles etc? So you have some problems with your eyes (or just fanboy). Even 2 years old phones have batter screens than Z.

Nope. Neither my Xperia S nor my Xperia Neo nor my Nexus 4 nor everything i've owned had a better screen.
Maybe there are some people on the world who like natural colours, becoz after looking at a amoled display my head hurts.
The display of the lg g2 is the only one which impressed me though, this is miles better, but nothing else.

If you display some screen calibration patterns while using bravia engine, you see how bad it is for fidelity. It just oversaturates, tints, and destroys detail in brighter and darker areas of images/videos.
If a phone has a screen of 300/1 contrast ratio, there is no way some software can improve this, it only can put some make up but at the cost of some other things, just like LCD's are doing since the beginning with dynamic contrast and all that bullsh*t, where you see skin become shiny bright and where there used to be a dark grey shadow over a black background, then it becomes all black and no shadow.
BE is the first thing i disable in all my Sony products, and its equivalent in any non Sony product.
I think that our screen without bravia its complety UGLY! :-&
I never had any issues with the colours on my device. Infact I prefer them this way as opposed to colour popping and extra vibrant. Infact I turn down that setting on my LCD monitor. A friend of mine did a side by side comparison against his Samsung device and the 1st thing he notices was the colour was more toned down then said he actually preferred the Sony display. Point is some ppl like the toned down visuals and others like them vibrant but funny how as someone says they have no issue with the Sony display they are labeled a blind fanboy.
As for viewing angles, Also never had an issue with them due to the fact that I always take up my phone when I want to look at it (always, its a habit of mine) and never just glance at it while it is on a desk or anything like that.
Xperia Z Screen is OK, i have been using it everyday since launch date, viewing angles may be low, but that is something i forgot completely in everyday use. Screen brightness is more than enough, contrast is ok, and visual fidelity is great (as long as you have BE2 deactivated).
For people saying there were better screens two years ago, please point me to a device released two years ago with a 5" FullHD screen with better specifications.
We all know the XZ screen, today, is not one of the best FullHD screen on a smartphone, but it was the first released.

I don't think they need a doctor or anything, it is a matter of taste, there are people who like viewing screen with oversaturated colors and overdriven contrast just because it is more eye catchy, for god's sake they even ported the bravia engine to the galaxy nexus, and there are people who even enjoy it, if the nexus screen weren't oversaturated enough... let's oversaturate it even more and add a lot of detail loss due to contrast overdrive by BE.
Oh, also forgot to mention, "nits", why the hell would we need a screen with a gazillion of nits if at the end of the day we are all using the brightness bar to decrease it to save battery (or using the Auto mode), at the end we all are viewing the screen with about the same luminosity, it doesn't matter if our screen has 10 or 8.000.000 nits.

Display Uniformity Problem

I didn't expect 1000€ device still has this issue.
If you want to test it on your note 9 download this image: https://i.imgur.com/DUEKJzH.jpg
It is dark solid grey background.
In dark room open this image and set brightness to low. You should see uniform gray color.
I think at least 90% devices has this problem.
Here is what I see:

Feel free to enlighten me but unless you spend all your time looking at a dark solid grey background, I don't see why this is an issue. I have tested mine with a similar image and to my eyes, the screen is perfect.
Your link to the image is dead btw.

While they do have a dark grey background, there is usually something in front of the background to draw your eye to instead.
Thanks for letting me know about the links, it's amazing how editing your post, fixing the links and saving the post makes the links work. I did check the links and all I see is noise.

Actually, mass production usually aims for less than 1% failure rate, so I'm pretty confident you got one of those >1%.
Considering YOU are the only one complaining, then yes, you're probably one unlucky person.
If you were talking about a Google Pixel 2/3, then yes, you're likely to have a **** screen, because that's how they are. Samsung screens aren't like that at all - the Note 9 has one of, if not THE best screen available on any phone.

I am pretty sure they will agree to change it + the chances to draw again a problematic display are really slim. Sadly some do have such a problem and actually I saw a lot worse on the xda forums. Return it for exchange is my advice.
Look in my thread history. I made threads about Samsung display uniformity issues since Note3!
It got better over the years, but still I estimate only 10-30% of all Amoled screens are perfect.
Samsung makes things right in terms of quality management, because most customers do not notice this flaw, but if you are sensible to it, it's hard to ignore!
in my threads I also explained the reason for this, which is how amoled screens are produced. they are cut out of wafers after lithography. only devices cut out of the center of the wafer have almost uniform screens. the more from a side your screen has been cut out, the worse the screen quality will be.

I think it has improved a lot since a couple of years. Before that, I used to swap my Samsung phones once or twice to get a decent one.
But the last 4 or 5 phones I bought, all with Samsung screens, were all perfect.
That includes Pixel 2 (not XL), Note 9, S8+, P20 Pro, etc....
Either I got extremely lucky to get as many perfect screens in a row, or they really improved things. Now I think it will happen to me again to have a bad one, but I'm not as nervous anymore. It's not a lottery anymore.
My Note 9 in particular is extremely impressive with a perfect screen. Perfect whites, no uniformity problem with any shades of grey at any brightness. Pure oled bliss.
BUT, I've had so many problems before that I'll ALWAYS be a little nervous before unboxing an oled screen smartphone. I've been burned too many times with crappy panels.
Let me tell you I was extremely nervous the day I bought my LG Oled 4K TV 55"..... Thousands of dollars thrown at an Oled panel lottery.... I was lucky this time again
Times are changing.
Okay so I got another note 9 and has this issue too but in different spot. Also checked one more piece in samsung store...same.
So I think almost everyone has this uneven screen but maybe some of you have less sensitive eyes or just don't want to see this problem

So my question is, does this affect your use of the device? Is it causing wear and tear on you vision? Or is it just an OCD/OCPD effect?
To me personally, stuff like this is pointless to have an issue with even on a phone that costs $1000. Unless it's to the point where you can't use the device because you see the defect on everything.
To another comment I saw that included the word "Perfect," NOTHING is perfect, and there will never be such a thing that could be perfect because of our human definition of what perfection is. It's good to strive for Better, but it's pointless to strive for Perfection.
Btw, I did download the Pic and tested it on my Note 9 and my wife's Note 8, and the uniformity is affected on both devices. I also looked at the image on my 4K TVs and my LCD monitors and the effect is there. Are you sure the image itself is uniform?

Perfect screens exist. I have some. I have perfect eyesight. I was a combat helicopter pilot in the french army. I know what to look for. If it is there I see it. If it is not, I don't. It's a fact. It's science. Not some voodoo magic wishful thinking.
I've had terrible screens. I've had some perfect. Nowadays I get more good ones than bad.
Bad ones still exist, but it my opinion that they are less and less common.
Against clear backgrounds you won't see much apart from a slight shift in color temperature.
Against dark grey at indoor brightness you can have incredible differences between some parts of the screen.
If you use a dark theme (not black), you will see it all the time.
Does it prevents you from using the phone ? No of course not.
Does it suck on a 1000 dollars phone ? Yes.
Some people are insensitive to that kind of thing. Good for them.
It's not an OCD. It's the will to have a good looking screen.
I like good looking women. I don't think it's an OCD. I know what I want, that's all. And I want the best. Nothing less.
If you want to settle with average, good for you.

You do know that you have to have a perfect eyesight to be a combat pilot, do you ?
Acuity, color, contrast, night vision, side vision, field of view, and much more. Everything is tested BEFORE you're even allowed to go forward in the selection process.
Most people fail those tests. That's sad but that's life.
As a side note, you don't have to have perfect vision to see those screen problems.
They can be very obvious to anybody open minded enough.
Close minded people though, will always be impervious to such matter.
