[Q] Can't open apps after update - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello lads!
I received my Xperia Z yesterday.
It's an awesome phone but i've got a nasty problem
I hooked it up to my PC, installed PC Companion and it told me there was an update.
Naturally I installed it.
Everything went fine, no problems whatsoever during the update.
Phone booted normally.
However, after the update, I cannot launch anymore apps. None of them!
The screen reacts perfectly if an app does manage to launch, but it's like the phone thinks I'm trying to drag it right away, instead of having to hold it down first.
Edit://
Found another user on Tweakers.net who has the exact same problem. We are both located in the Netherlands, and both updated via PC companion.
Is this a known issue, and how do I fix this?!
Phone is pretty much unusable now!

I'm from Belgium, but have XZ from the netherlands (coolblue) I did the update, and can use all apps

Have you tried a factory reset?

The same thing happened to me after restarting the XZ, the apps would not open.
A factory reset fixed the problem.

Same here, I did a factory reset and it solved the problem. But now it comes back again!!!!!

Have anyone fixed this yet I installed another Launcher now ok someone says it could be something about using the wrong charger but I have only used the sony charger and wouldnt this do the same with other Launchers so I gues its just a bug.

[Q] Screen issues after update

Hi there.
Recently I just bought a Xperia SP. I updated the firmware to 12.0.A.2.254 (from 12.0.A.1.257), and then I realized that there was this part of the screen at the top (the notification panel and a small area below it) in which it was unresponsive (i.e. tapped but the touch wasn't registered). Before the update it was fine, but after the update it became unresponsive.
I've tried factory resetting the phone, restoring the phone through PC companion, but the problem still was not resolved. The last resort would be to go down to Sony and see what they can do about it, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
I'm not really sure what causes this issue, there isn't even a SIM card or memory card inserted in the phone (I just took it out to test out its features).
Hope someone out there can offer some insights regarding this issue.
Thanks!
Hi,
Did you solve this issue downgrading or upgrading to another FW ?
Reflash with SEUS (Sony Update Service(Centre)) solves this almost all the time

Three random issues - Has anyone else experienced these?

Background info: I've had my Xperia Z1 only for two to three weeks now. I've been enjoying every part of it, but I've come across three particular gripes I have to mention.
First, random app crashes. One time the Album crashes, the other time System crashed. It appears to be random, not based on anything you were or weren't doing at that moment. I don't think I'm the only one with this though.
Secondly, and here's where it gets weird: my on-screen buttons disappeared. I believe I was just closing GTA: San Andreas. Suddenly, the buttons were gone. I could scroll through the app drawer perfectly, still. That's the odd thing. I should've taken a screenshot if I realised this earlier. I will next time it happens, so let's hope I don't have to. After a while, the phone froze and I decided to reset it, after which everything returned to normal. I guess that's one part where hardware buttons beat software - they don't magically disappear (I hope..).
Lastly, I opened the camera and it looked like it lagged. I pressed the Home button twice or thrice, but then the entire device froze and it kept vibrating like hell! I don't particularly enjoy 5" vibrating devices so I decided to reset it as quickly as possible. No way that could've been good for the device.
Have you experienced one of the last two issues I've had? Or have you had something similar yet different?
Let me know below!

I'm sorry, what?
It's pretty important to not lose the three main on-screen buttons, not to mention having a device that doesn't vibrate like you-know-what.
What would repairing the firmware do? The phone is still new. There couldn't be anything wrong with the firmware, not solvable by flashing the same firmware over it again, I reckon.

yeah these are problems and easily can be solved
by PC companion.
even more issue can appear on new phone.
these are bugs on ur ROM
when u repair firmware, PC companion will download latest firmware (available for ur region) and install it on ur phone.
That can solve ur problem.
-
if repairing by PCC didn't help u should download Flash-Tool for Xperia & firmware of another region and flash it.
u can find useful information about it here.

Try repair is really the first thing to do with ROM dependent error, so there is nothing wrong with the answer.

How can this be a ROM dependent error when I just had my Xperia Z1 for a couple of weeks and updated to official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean through an Over The Air update? My Android firmware is as official and up-to-date as it gets right now.
EDIT: Actually, I wasn't even asking for a solution. I was purely wondering if anyone else had these specific issues as well.

Because any update (especially an OTA) might fail and because these errors (mentioned, i think, for the first time here) are ROM dependent.
So first thing I would do is trying the repair.
I'm aware that you only asked for similarities, but as the are annoying errors, we just wanted to help with a possible solution.
Are you running a 4.3 stock ROM?
Do you use bluetooth/have it turned on?
If yes to both, it is a bug in the 4.3 roms related to bluetooth. Only solution I am aware of is to restart the phone whenever it happens and if you can leave bluetooth off

[Q] Anyone experiencing SERIOUS crashes after the Z1 sound-fix update [on stock]?

Hey XDA'ers,
First off, in case anyone mentions that I have to use the search function of XDA: I did an I couldn't find any thread with this exact question, so I presume it's okay. Now, ever since I've installed the sound fixing update Over The Air, my phone crashes quite often. This happens most often when I play music through my amplifier with a standard 3.5mm cable. There seems to be about half an hour in between but it varies. The music would suddenly stop and my phone won't turn on anymore, with a completely black screen. If I then wait a little longer, the phone restarts and it does not even require me to enter my SIM's PIN code which is odd on its own, as if it doesn't fully crash but reboot on its own or something. I thought it only happened while listening to audio, but it just happened again when I only tried to open the Album app, I got the message that the app crashed and while that message was popping up (it was still a bit transparent) the phone froze and rebooted.
Now, I'm used to regular apps suddenly crashing with my Xperia Z1 which is weird to begin with, but opening these apps again just gets rid of the problem. It was only a minor annoyance so far, but it did make the Z1 look like the firmware wasn't stable at all (multiple apps keep crashing, even the front camera today as well...). But now that the phone even reboots at least every day, the minor annoyance is becoming a major annoyance. I really don't want to reinstall the firmware because it takes too much time to reinstall all the apps and data I have on the device.
So I'm just wondering now, am I the only one with this issue? I don't suppose there's an easy way to fix it without factory resetting or reflashing firmware. And by the way, I'm completely on stock with my device. I haven't rooted, unlocked the bootloader or anything. If you've experienced this as well, please let me know. Maybe we can dive into it. Have you for example reset factory settings with the issue reoccurring? Have you flashed the firmware yourself and did the issue perhaps stop? I'd love to know.

Try repair the Z1 via PC companion, you will not lose any data to do that and maybe will fix the problem, otherwise a Factory Reset will be recommended.

Wait, this PC Companion repair does not erase any kind of data on my phone? Are you sure?
I thought it would just reflash my firmware and basically do a factory reset. Which is not what I'm looking for.
Have you not experienced any app crashes or rather sudden phone reboots?
I have the same. Sudden reboots. It was the same way when I was rooted on the.. 757 firmware.
I did the repair with Sony update. Still the reboots but even more random. When rooted it usually rebooted when using camera.
Also the touchscreen doesn't react like normal sometimes. Not that often it happens but it happens.
Reboots about once every day and at completely random occasions.
I'm guessing it's the firmware, just have to wait until a stable firmware comes. Until then we are stuck beeing testpilots for Sony developers.

why you are afraid to start from 0 ... I can not understand ... too much of laziness??? your stories of wanting to keep your data, tends to cause bugs that are not on a clean system...
You can save the very important files on your computer... And restore the principal after...
You should atleast try a repair but for me everything actually got worse after the repair.
Someone at Sony replied to me with "have you tried your phone without the sim card". Are there known issues with simcards making our phones crashing I wonder?

Screen is not working anymore

Hi,
So i have my Z3 compact for a couple of months now. Today, i finished work and walked to the trainstation. Everything worked all right till then. When i arrived at the station, i wanted to change a song, but when i turned it on the screen was not reacting. I thought, lets reboot it by pressing vol up + power and so i did. Now i have to log in with my sim code, but its still not reacting.
Before i arrived at the station i check the time and everything was working fine.
Anyone knows what to do?
Can you connect it to the computer and do some sort of reflash/repair/Whatever of the software? (i'm new to this device, never installed Sony's software on my pc...) if possible it will rule out any software problems (and probably rule out your chances of fixing the problem)
EDIT:
Stole this from sxtester in thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/enter-settings-t3000292
1. Get the same FW version you have installed now (via XperiFirm tool or via download here in the forum).
2. Flash with Flashtool and make sure you uncheck any and all boxes from "Wipe" before doing so. That is, APPSLOG, CACHE and DATA should not be ticked.

if anything, that sounds like a hardware problem to me...
--> how hot does your phone get while its "on"?
I've been having the same problem here for the past week. Just gave up and returned it to where I bought it to get it checked out. No point having a phone that you can't be sure is going to work.

Anyone had their Xz1 compact reboot itself?

I've had it since Saturday and so far its done it 3 times.
Once yesterday just when I was trying to open the phone with the fingerprint sensor and twice now today when trying to do something with the phone connected to Bluetooth.
This morning I was trying to set up the connection to my in car TomTom Toyota 2 unit for the first time. Got part way through the process then it failed then when i tried again the phone rebooted then it worked.
This afternoon I turned on my Bluetooth connected to the car but it wouldn't do anything then the phone froze and rebooted but then it all worked fine.
I'm not giving up yet but its making me a bit nervous having these issues so soon (better now than later i guess). If it happens more this week ill take it back and might see about a different phone.
Just curious if anyone else has had similar?
This Bluetooth device worked fine previously with my Nexus 5X also on Oreo so its fine software compatibility wise.

I haven't, and I use BT in the car everyday.
Thanks. I'll see if it happens again this week and take mine back if so.
No, I haven't had a single reboot in the 6 days that I own the device.

Have you tried performing a factory reset? It might fix your problem. If it persists, then you can send it back for a replacement.
Rebooted again today just in the camera.
Not tried a factory reset yet, will take it into store today and see what they say is best to do. Don't mind doing a reset but then its waiting again to see if it does it again after which isn't something I can easily replicate.
If i can get a new unit id prefer that so i can see if its just my current one with an issue, even with the pain of having to buy a new screen protector.

If the factory reset doesn't work, install the Sony Companion software and run a software repair on it. That may fix the issue. Mine hasn't restarted at all in the 24 hours I've had it, even after using Wifi, Bluetooth, installing lots of apps, using 3G and 4G... However, I installed Newpipe via F-Doid and it crashed at least 4 times on me when I left the video I was watching and came back to it.
No reboots. Two days of heavy use.
I factory reset it soon as I received it and firware update poped up.

No reboot, have had phone for over a week now.
What did the store recommend you do? Here, they always suggest you factory reset first, same with going to the service center, they actually do that first thing when you send in for repairs.
What did you eventually do? Did it solve your problem?

I took it into a store the other day and they had no stock so i'm taking it to a different one today. The store i went to said it would be no problem though as id not had it long. Its been rebooting still a few times just when sitting in my pocket doing nothing, ive had the must enter pin after reboot message.
Well on the way to store speaking to my wife (also with XZ1 compact) her phone froze mid call and rebooted. When she rang back she said she was showing a software update. Checked mine when parked and i had it too.
Sony rep happened to be in store today so told him the issue, he had one himself and hasn't experienced or heard of this but said to do a repair with xperia companion to clean flash the new firmware on both our phones. If still having issues then theres nothing more we could do ourselves and bring back to store to swap.
I have another week in which i can change phone or another 3 weeks to swap for a new XZ1 compact.
Will do repairs tonight and hope the problem goes away.
Repaired friday evening, phone rebooted randomly again after freezing sunday. Taking in today to swap for a new unit.
If any similar problems this week with the new one ill ask to swap to a different phone entirely.
Probably need a software update. Mine is running fine on 47.1.A.2.324

No i updated that on friday before repairing and the repair had that version too and it still rebooted sunday and today.
Me and my wife got a new unit now so will see how these ones go.

Not good if others are getting this too, lets hope it was a one off for you.
So far just setup and listened to music on my new phone and all is good but there's no pattern to what causes the reboot so will see how the next few days go.
My XZ1 Compact also has the reboot-issue...
Mine has just done the fourth reboot in just a little more than one week. In different situations, with bluetooth in use and without. Once when I tried to call someone, once when I was searching for wifi networks and the other two times in pretty normal "just using it" situations.
As not everyone is having those issues, I think it is some hardware defect and I need to get the phone replaced, right?

Difficult to tell. A hard reset might help but it could also be a problem with Android 8 on xz1 that wasnt very well optimized..
Id get the handset replaced, 'repairing' didn't do anything for my issue. Only time will tell if my new handset has the same issues and same for you.
Well this morning I got in the car to go to work and went to turn on bluetooth. Tried OK google no response at all, went to manually unlock and it sat on the lock screen my finger prints not working and wouldnt swipe up for PIN entry. Mic and camera toggle reacted to swipes but didnt do anything. Then it rebooted.
Bye bye Xperia XZ1 Compact, the potential was there but rebooting and dodgy camera is too much to hope for a fix for.
