Dev support and AOSP? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Big question!
Will HTC allow (contribute) devs to build perfect AOSP ROMs on this beauty?
What about bootloader unlock and warranty?
I'm on an intl. Galaxy S3, you can understand how keen I am to choose a dev friendly device.
I know Sony Xperia Z will be very friendly bit the screen is too big and battery seems not great.
Thanks.

AOSP is coming to the HTC One...
Qualcomm chipsets are quite well documented, so I wouldn't worry...

Seriously???
I think we need to get the device first, get the kernel source and then start looking into it...

I just wish when we unlock the device nothing gets broken... Like on sony when you unlock bravia, gracenote, download music info, track id doesnt work anymore. So hopefully this doesn't happen on the propriety features of htc one.

The new camera hardware/software will likely cause a lot of problems.
For example: Evo one lte has AOKP/CM etc with working cam, but but quality is nowhere near the sense camera quality and the Evo 3d, because of it's ridiculous and proprietary camera config had no cam on aosp, or if they do now, it took a helluva long time.
Don't get me wrong, I love HTC hardware, but I always plan of ditching sense software ASAMFP. But I'm just relaying my experience with their proprietary stuff thus far.
From my Evo LTE, yup.

HOX has poorer image quality in AOSP as well. Not massively so, but you can tell. To be honest I don't see HTC moving away from their imagechip stuff any time soon, things aren't going to change.

Hey there fellow Canadians
I will NEVER buy another SE phone again after the whole X10 issue... (rogers customer)
I would suggest out of all of them go for the incredible S. Since all the phones your looking at are from different carriers I would also suggest look at the Desire HD.
The desire HD is my current phone. It is the same as the Incredible S, except a Metal Unibody design.
What I would say however..... Wait a few months if you can.
New Android powered devices will be out.
Expect Telus to get em first.
Edit: Stay away from the LG imo. The 2x is pretty laggy from the model I play'd around with. Go watch some reviews of it... pretty badly optimized rom. Rather wait for HTCs new models.
Cause incredible s is coming to bell April 4th and nexus s around 14 April and arc is coming 21st both with Rogers. How you like your dhd?

I've narrowed my choices down to the same 3 phones (rogers customer)
I'm leaning towards the NS. With the incredible second and almost out of the picture.
Waiting to handle all three in person before making my final decision

I believe the Nexus S is the way to go on this one. The incredible S from what I hear isn't shipping with 2.3 which is really not as important as the hardware specs but even in that area I might go with the NS. The only thing I really like about the IS is the 8meg cam but overall I'd go with the NS.
Xperia arc sounds promising even my first choice is nexus I think. And incredible s is running 2.2 don't think it would have much dev support on xda.

Hi, I might be out of the line here, but i sold my nexus s to get incredible s, the reason is good build quality & solid user experience, i first used HTC sense when i used hero, that was also very tightly controlled by HTC, but they have done very good job with it, i am holding on to my incredible s & i feel relieved that i got rid of my nexus s, believe me i had gone for nexus s for updates, but that phone is so badly made( according to my standards> u may find it Ok) ( dont make any decision on my comment see for yourself and decide)
but i am happy now

yes you are right absolutely no support, nobody could even root the phone not even Paul (Modaco.com) AFAIK, but that is added part for me, i am not going to reflash & reflash, i want stable experience.
The Xperia Arc has a pathetic internal memory of only 300+ MB. Note that still a majority of apps doesn't support installation on SD cards. It also lacks a notification LED light and Front-facing cam, not that it's important, but this phone should be future proof.
Plus, I love the overall experience and tweaks of the Sense UI.
As we all can see ... I choose the IS
Why? First of all htc's quality is far better than samsung's ... Hardware wise ... Also sense ... Well sense is just unbeatable ... And for those who care about shipping with 2.2 ... Who cares ... we are getting an update to 2.3.3 in q2 that is this month right ?
So over all the IS is the best choice sense and 2.3.3 are goind to be a crazy combo ...

Want to change my phone - need opinions

Hi
I know this is not P500-related but I really need some opinions as I am really confused.
I want to change my phone in october (waiting for my contract to expire so I can change it) and I want to change my phone also. So, these are the phones I'm considering (prices for the contract I will most likely get, but probably I will get a bigger one so the phones will be a bit cheaper)
- Sensation - 289eur; really like this phone, I love the way it feels in my hand, nice build quality, nice design, nice resolution (but not very bright). Cons: not as fast as a dual-core should be, risk of having the famous display bug (50-50 odds as I read)
- SGS2 - 379eur; fastest there is, gorgeous colors on the display, 21mbps hsdpa. Cons: doesn't feel nice in my hand, crappy plastic case (when you buy a premium phone you expect great quality).
- Xperia Arc - 239eur; gorgeous phone, I simply love the way it looks, great display and good build quality. Cons: 320mb internal mem, 1ghz single core (not a big con, the way this phone looks simply makes for it)
- Incredible S - 249eur; not sure if it's worth over the Xperia S but I'm considering it anyway
What I want from a phone: first of all I want it to be a good phone, so I don't want crappy in-call quality and signal issues. Second, I want it to look and feel good, after all I'm spending money on an object so I want it to be well-made.
I don't want to mod it, the only reason I'm modding my O1 is because it's too slow with stock rom. I want a phone that doesn't need modding.
I can only buy phones from Vodafone RO, so I'm pretty limited in options. I would love a Sensation XE or Arc S but I don't know when or if vdf will sell them.
I put SGS2 on the list but I don't know if it's worth the 90eur difference, especially because I need to change the tires and the brakes on my car so I have other pretty important things to do with extra money.
So I'm waiting for your advices or other suggestions (for other vdf phones: https://www.vodafone.ro/personal/internet-oriunde/internet-pe-mobil/smartphones/index.htm - these are some of the phones in the vdf deals, other phones are too pricy with a contract)
too much to read for me^^

if you like quality things, i suggest going for the htc sensation.
not to mention that the sensation's forum on xda is quite impressive (im talking mostly about the developmental section)
EDIT: just read that you dont plan on modding your phone. but regarding the sensation xe:
http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/htc-sensation-xe/
If I were you, from those alternatives I'd go with the Sensation or Xperia Arc, and then mod it to solve the speed or memory size issue. My brother has a SGS II and I must say I don't really like it, as you say the plastic body doesn't feel nice to hold. Looks wise Arc is the most beautiful.
And I don't know if it's just my brother's settings but the SGSII UI doesn't feel so smooth either, compared to my O1 with CM7.
sgs 2 all the way

That's really interesting; even though I said I don't want to mod my phone anymore, that sounds like something worth done.
I just read on gsmarena that HTC wants to make the following changes for Sensation 4G: overclock to 1.5ghz, change the battery. So if HTC will upgrade the non-4G models also I will get a Sensation without second thoughts.
Another plus for the Sensation: Sense UI; way better and more smartphone-like than Samsung's childish iphone-like touch-wiz. But in performance terms Samsung is simply better. I gotta decide if the performance plus matters that much to me...
Thanks for your opinions
By the way - I forgot one important thing: the phone must be updatable to ICS; SE confirmed that the Arc will receive ICE, Samsung didn't say anything but for sure they will update their flagship. HTC also didn't say anything but will there be a reason for Sensation not to receive ICS?
SGS2 is for the moment out of the question. As I said, I have other plans with my money and I don't think that a phone is worth it.
So, I want to make a decision: Arc or Sensation? Is the not-so-fast Sensation worth over the excellent-looking Arc? Price difference: 50eur, so not a big difference. The Arc has an excellent camera, excellent display, gorgeous design and great build quality. The Sensation has the dual-core advantage but it's actually not so fast in real life; sometimes it behaves like a bad 1ghz single core. And there's a thing that bothers me: I closed all the running apps and the remaining RAM was still 150mb (tried on 3 different devices and also saw it in a review).
The only thing keeping me from buying dirrectly the Arc is the 320mb internal memory.

No need for 4.2

Kind of funny but I've been thinking about this. 4.2 is almost an update designed to make bare bones aosp android better, and does almost nothing for a phone with a manufacturer skin. 4.1 would be great on this phone with project butter, better notifications, and Google now, but here's the rundown on 4.2 features:
Better camera app: sense 3.6 already has a nicer one than aosp. No photosphere but its kinda of a gimmick "look what my phone can do" feature anyway. The stock camera app has always sucked until 4.2 and the update finally brings it up to par with custom ui's, but does nothing for us.
Improved lockscreen with widget support : sense pretty much has the best lockscreen with shortcut support and notification widgets that appear through sense apps. Custom widget support would be nice but aosp still doesn't have shortcut support.
Gesture typing: yep, we got it on the stock "touch input" keyboard. next
Quick settings : yep sense has that too
Tv out support : while we don't have miracast support, about every htc device post evo 4G has either an hdmi port or mhl support. I'm sure the vivid is no different, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Better alarm clock app : the aosp alarm clock app has always been an after thought until 4.2,however ui's like sense and touchwiz have always had really nice alarm clock apps and the 4.2 app really just brings stock aosp up to par with the ui's
User profiles: this feature is tablet only and disabled on the phones so the vivid wouldn't get it anyway.
I think that's about it. So there you have it! I really kind of believe 4.2 is catered to nexus devices, and I honestly could see a lot of manufacturers passing on this as if they do update, then it'll be little more than a version number change. If you're in the market for a non nexus phone and it has 4.1, then your already up to date.
Just something I thought about. Thoughts?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
And before anyone calls me out, I got a nexus 7, so I use 4.2 on a daily basis, so I'm not just posting on stuff I've read lol.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
I have a nexus 7 also and personally I'd like to see 4.2 on the vivid because I HATE sense.... Didn't realize how much I didn't like it until I played with pure android. But I'm guessing that if we can't get CM10 to work on this phone, there'd be no reason to worry about 4.2 or not!
Sent from my De-Sensed HTC Vivid using xda premium
Yeah I'm not to keen on sense either, thought it was awesome until I got a phone with it and had to use it every day. If by some Longshot we get jellybean, I hope it comes with Sense 4+ and not the underwhelming sense 3.6 that's on this phone now. From what I've seen sense 4 is world's ahead of what we have.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Once cm10 is completed bring 4.2 will be easy as there isn't much difference between 4.1.2 and 4.3 when it comes to making things work
Anyways I love the 4.2 camera...and I think I read others here on the vivid are able to use it on ICS....
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk 2
Well I was nearly speaking from the perspective of stock, of course I'd want it for cm, but cm doesn't quite have 4.2 ready yet anyway. I hope you can pull it off, I might keep this thing if I can actually get away from using sense or "desensitized" roms.
Problem is with the development we've had, nothing really seems done. I'm sure there is some way to crack the ril issues, so kudos for not giving up. I know I've complained alot but really the phone is no different on stock than any other phone, it's just development hasn't been so great as the best developers keep giving up on the phone in favor of a galaxy s3 or something else.
From a stock standpoint this is better than my captivate I had before, but I would of hated the captivate if I had to be at the mercy of at&t and Samsung for updates which is where we're at with this phone currently. So best of luck to ya hope you can finally solve the dreaded ril issue!

Lol I feel the same...but since I have the phone and at least somewhat knowledge on this stuff I figured I might as well try my best...that being said I hate HTC and will never get another one...this vivid ruined it for me. Like you say, stock wise this phone is great...but that's it. Once you go into the world of custom ROMs this phone takes a major dive to nowhere :/
And honestly...ialthough I will keep trying I don't think I'll personally ever figure out the ril/mic issue...but since we got h8rift now I think we may stand a fighting chance...he is a real dev, I'm just a contributor...hence our titles

Yeah they can make some beautiful looking phones with excellent build quality but sense hasn't aged well and every post sensation device has been a lot less developer friendly. I almost think they feel insulted that anyone wouldn't want to use sense and feel like their phones are perfect already.
But the one x, one x+, and DROID DNA are all gorgeous looking. Hell really so is our phone. Make no mistake their phones are awesome its just the software that blows.

Oh man! I am so pumped for this. I have been running Rootbox AOSP, and it has it's slight quirks and random animations that are stuttery, so it's gonna be awesome messing around with a perfect version of AOSP pretty soon here. Someone needs to release the RUU already
This is going to be amazing. I can't wait to start tinkering
stuff like zoe and beats wouldn't be ported over amirite?
I sincerely hope that within a week's time, we'll see the first major steps taken in the direction of a solidified, fully-functional build for Sprint's HTC One. Granted, things like CM 10.1 have nightlies, but sadly; not an official stable release in-sight for us.
That being said, perhaps the system dumps provided by GPE owners will significantly help steering these ROMs in the right direction.
It would still be fantastic if Sprint (and I suppose HTC in-partial) would quickly prepare the 4.2.2 w/ Sense 5 update for us.

From what I have gathered, beats will be a function you can turn off and on. I don't imagine Zoe will be there because that is a big time sense thing. And I think beats audio will likely not have the beats logo when it is running.
Keep in mind this isn't meant to be a hybrid HTC/Google device. It is a Google device. I'm sure they will implement the better sound, and some more root code stuff, but not as much on the front end / UI
From the looks of any of this I wouldn't get your hopes up for this "helping" anything. AOSP builds are already available. Until Sprint and HTC update Sense to 4.2.2 we will still be in limbo.

One thing this could help is the kernel issues we are currently experiencing and hopefully the random bricking issue some people are experiencing when running AOSP roms.

Zoe is not there, but Beats is in the AOSP build on the HTC One GPe.
All I wish for is that they port the beats audio to our Aosp roms. Will make they audio so much better.

Damn, was finally about to buy a One today, but this has me intrigued, since all I've used for years is AOSP ROMs. On that note, are people pretty satisfied with this device? I am a longtime HTC user. I plan on getting S-off ASAMFP. That was my hesitation coming from S-off Evo LTE, but I see moonshine is now available.

Scott, brother you will not be disappointed. Aosp is still a bit quirky for some but with the current source dropped I expect great things in the Aosp world.

more disappointments
google will not be updating these directly like they do with their nexus devices
they are still leaving it up to the OEMs
so if you expect the nexus treatment, youre in for a huge disappointment

My EVO 4G LTE just drowned the other day so I paid my ETF and bought the One from Radio Shack, it's going to be delivered tomorrow. I was wondering if the fact that HTC was releasing a One with stock android would significantly speed up development on AOSP roms for the Sprint version of the phone. I was also wondering if there will likely be proprietary code for the GPE of the phone that developers here wouldn't be able to use in their AOSP builds. I love stock Android and I've used CM on all my Android phones at one time or another but there always seems to be random nagging issues that eventually push me back to Sense. I guess my question is will the software for the GPE One really help solidify and speed up development of AOSP roms for Sprint's version of the phone.

I believe you will see the GPe ROM ported to the Sprint One, but I don't know if it'll affect development by CM/AOKP/PA etc. There is still a lot of proprietary software in the GPe. That is, stuff devs can't use.

[Q] Upgrading From Nexus 4

Just a quick one really.
Thinking of upgrading from the nexus 4. Want to be able to use 4G in the uk.
Pros/Cons of upgrading, has anyone else done this?
I did exactly this, loved the Nexus 4 initially but the lack of 4g, limited storage (despite using Google music) and budget looks prompted Mr to upgrade.
Haven't looked back, absolutely loving the xperia z. Beautiful screen and for once a clean simple skin that actually brings useful apps with it.
Battery is good with Stamina mode on as well.

No, I don't game.
I like the nexus 4, but I have the option to upgrade too. The Xperia Z is the only one that stands out at the moment in the UK.
Plus, its 4g ready and has expandable memory!

Xperia Z is pretty much an improved version of the nexus 4 in terms of hardware.

Not really, I see more and more developers making new roms each week.
Whats the best ROM/Kernel combo at the moment?
I am actually considering same.. I have been monitoring Z section of xda for a while now.. The Nexus 4 is a great phone.. One of the best phones I have ever used. Just the battery life is a pain. My concern about the Z from what I have read is the screen and the lag.. I experience absolutely zero lag on the nexus 4 and even though it's and the Z use the same chipset my guess is the bigger screen resolution of the Z means the GPU gets to work harder. This might probably be responsible for the much talked about lag.
Is anyone here running their device with cyanogen? How fluid is the device with cm10? Answer to this question might decide whether I get the Z.. Every other thing seem on point with the device.

The smoothest an android phone can get
In the design aspect. The XZ and the HTC one is very elegant. And made from Premium materials the XZ is water proof and HTC one has beats speakers and good screen both are good choices and I will not go for Samsung if I were you its new features is not very useful and its made of plastic and dont look at the benchmark it doesnot Make a diffrence

tbh, I like the stock feel of Sony's android software.
It would just be a custom Kernel id be chasing, and at the moment, there only seems to be one!
I was thinking of changing to the XZ from the nexus 4. But I am worried about developer support is it gonna keep coming for the Z or will it die out when something new comes along? Any input would be helpful.

Check the android development forum for xperia z and determine it ur self.. As far as I can tell, definitely having support from veteran dev..
Nexus 4 - Obviously more development, compact.
XZ- Expandable storage, Water resistant, looks, camera, screen ( I've seen reviews saying its viewing angles are bad and washed out but on one on one comparison it felt way way better than the nexus's screen)
Issues : Wifi strength (already solved by custom ROM/Kernel),
Heating- If ur planning to play heavy games for a long time then put on a pair of gloves cos this thing heats up like a pan.
Lag - Wat ? where ? The lag on the stock launcher when swiping from leftmost page to right is a launcher glitch and it doesn't happen anywhere else. (nexus 7 is also running on the same chipset so no worries)
Sidenotes : Development wise i think its pretty good I've used couple of stock based ROMs (which were great) and almost all of the AOSP based ones (which are awesome)
Kernel for stock is just the Doomlord Kernel but i think he has done a brilliant job with it, lots of tweaks added and by the looks of his to-do list i think he'll cover all possible tweaks and features. So i'm satisfied with that. (his recent kernel were buggy don't know why after 11 versions he got a buggy kernel out, but that would be rectified very soon i'm sure)
Battery life- I get around 3-4 hours an average and standby of a day and a couple of hours, also i haven't let the percentage drop below 20% so if u are willing to let it drop till 2-3 add 40-45 mins more to the screen on.
I'm currently running CArbon 1.7 and Carbon kernel.
I too had the option of One, S4, Nexus 4 then i choose XZ, I don't know why but i just fell in love with the device and never looked back anyway thats just my stupid rant.
