[Q] xperia z battery issues - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I'm new to android and am having some major issues with my Sony New xperia z.
First off stamina mode is simply not working. It did to start but it's now not changing the expected battery life when toggled on and off. That's just the start though.
Battery life had been absolutely terrible. I have been deliberately stopping myself from using the handset just so I can make it through the day.
I have come from an iPhone 4 and am quite a heavy user normally, my battery always lasted well beyond one day. New I know the screen and processor on this are awesome but I'm literally not going to be able to use any apps or anything if this is the true battery life.:crying:
I noticed that android os was taking the majority of my battery for just if today, screen has since taken over since I got in because I've been searching the net for potential answers.
Android services is up there as well. I installed a battery checker to see if my phone is but going into deep sleep for some reason and found that there had been something like 3000 wakelocks since last charge (unplugged this morning). I'm now down to 3% after about 13.5 hours since unplugged.
Screenshot was from before I started writing this post.
Any help please. If this isn't some sort of bug/fixable errorI might have to see about returning this phone!
Is this amount of wake locks normal? How can I tell what's stopping my phone from sleeping? I'm new to android other than my nexus 7 which had always been amazing in terms of battery.
Thanks all
John

Go into your Google account and disable everything from syncing expert the essentials, logout of talk etc , that should help.

Battery life is not great, but it's good for me. However, my Xperia Z is rooted and all the non-essential apps and services disabled (pretty much everything of Sony's).
Can last for a whole day from morning 8am to night 12pm, and still left about 20%. Heavy user, 5 hours screen-on time, surfing, calls, text/whatsapp, and a couple of videos for about 30min.

lol yah it's not much to crow about if it lasts till only 12pm noon.

Hi guys
So I've charged it overnight, and this morning I've purposefully turned Stamina mode off (though the number doesn't change from 20 hours either way, Stamina mode is definitely broken on my handset!)
I've also turned off a load of location service options from within maps, as per a solution I found on a google forum (but it won't let me post the link as I'm still a noob!)
It sounds like lots of people have had similar issues with Android 4.1.2. Dare I hope that Sony release the 4.2.2 update as quickly as rumoured and that this will fix these issues!?
I'll report back in later on the battery use. So far only used 7% since being unplugged at 8:30am, and i have made a few long calls this morning (I use the phone for work as well as play )
I really haven't been using Apps all that much at all. I haven't even tried Google Talk yet. I am a games man really, so hopefully I can get the battery life sorted so I can make use of this phone to its full capability.
I don't want to disable 3G as I see this as standard operating functionality, and I usually use my phone to browse the web, check emails, check facebook, use whatsapp, stream youtube vids, everything you would expect a connected smartphone to do. I suppose what I'm saying is I don't want to disable anything that takes away from how I would actually use the handset, otherwise even if the battery lasts, its not doing what I need it to. It would be like a paperweight with a long lasting battery... pointless.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I really appreciate all the support. Fingers crossed I get a better day out of it today! Watch this space.
:fingers-crossed:

Much better today. I've had to use it for quite a few calls, watched a couple of vids and listened to a couple of tracks plus played about 4-5 levels on angry birds space. I'm at 56%remaining after 9 hours on battery. This is with stamina mode off. 1 hour 37 mins of screen time.
To be fair it's still not as good as I had hoped, but this at least means it'll likely last till bedtime with some battery remaining. I get the feeling that tomorrow it migot be even better. Also I think once the 4.2.2 update is released it will probably improve. I also get the feeling it may have improved after I opened YouTube and Google talk for the first time - almost as if android was holding its breath until I opened them. Could it have been holding out for me to open them so they could complete initial setups or something?
All this being said, after being on here for only about 5-10 minutes to write this post I'm now down to 51% all of a sudden!

Wrong thread.

Hi there, So did you manage to fix the stamina mode? I'm having the same problem. Turning stamina mode on or off doesn't change the idle time left. Though this is my second day using and only second charge.

I believe stamina mode kicks in when You switch the screen on.
On the couple of first day, when You play with Your new phone all day long with full brightness, it could run out pretty quick (less than 9 hours I had).
I got my Xperia Z on release day in UK and to be honest, I've been checking 'battery issues' threads for all day long
Two days ago, I did a proper test eg 'everyday use'. Phone battery lasted nearly two full days :good:
Basicaly I upluged Z from charger 6 in the morning and I died on me NEXT day when i sat on sofa around 8 pm watching Youtube with headphones on. So I got over 2 hours constant screen on with music before it died.
Through the rest of the time i managed to get over 2 hours of screen time, answering over 12 calls, sending loads of messages and checking facebook, xda, twitter and instagram countless times :highfive:
1 day 13 hours 24 minutes
And here is the screen time.
My stamina is set to allow gmail only, which obviously tells me if I sold anything on ebay, got interaction on any of my websites.
My screen brightness was set to automatic with slider full to the right.
Vibration when touching screen are off since day one (don't really like it )
I was worried about battery too. From thinking it is not good, I've changed my opinion to its WAY better than S and Ip5 (which i own still until i sell them on ebay). Hope this clears things up for anyone. Ohh, phone was ran to flat out once on release day, then full charge and flat 2 times before this.
Now I have to say, I absolutely LOVE THIS PHONE now!
:victory:

Is it time to try a custom rom?

Hi there - nope. Stamina mode is bust for me. I'm not bothered enough to factory reset again though. I'm still experiencing intermittent battery issues, like today for example I took it out the wall at 6:35, I'm already down to 66%. To be fair, I've watched a couple of 2-3 mins videos on Youtube, used a bit of tethering (about 5 minutes) and sent a few texts, but this is way higher than I would expect. By contrast, yesterday the battery seemed to last pretty well, but then I was working from home, so there was very little in the way of searching for signal etc.
I've contacted Sony about this, and their official line is to download PC Companion software and do a "software repair" (through their usual updating route) I'm going to probably give this a go over the weekend, but it has warned me that I might lose my data... so it might be the equivalent of a factory reset anyway.
I'm a bit sick about worrying about battery life now - getting a new handset should be exciting and I should just be enjoying the features of this superphone. Instead I'm deliberately not using it to make sure I don't run out of juice. Starting to wonder what the point in having it is.
As a newbie, I don't know much about rooting and using non-stock software - does anyone know if:
Its easy to do (I am fairly computer literate at least)?
There are custom roms I could use for the Xperia Z?
It would likely help the battery life?
Thanks again all

Well, that's me jealous as hell then! I'm going to do the software repair, as obviously I do have some issues with the battery (rather than me just being paranoid, and it being normal to get the battery usage I've been receiving)

Agreed. I just one good battery life not great. Enough to last a day with moderate-heavy usage. I don't mind charging at night. But charging every half a day is ridiculous..
Anyways I too have my stamina broken. Now i'm doing the software repair. hopefully it'll be okay. I really hope that after a few weeks the XZ can last long..

I'm hoping that when they release the Android 4.2.2 update it'll help too. I've read lots of forums about people getting poor battery life when upgrading to 4.1.2 (which the Z comes with as standard) but these being fixed when upgrading to 4.2.2. So hopefully they'll release it as quickly as the rumours suggest and this can help.
I've certainly got no battery problems whatsoever on my Nexus 7 on 4.2.2, but then its a totally different device.

to be honest, 4.2 and 4.2.1 on my nexus 7 just killed the battery.
it was no where near as good as 4.1.2 or 4.1.1...
hoping that 4.2.2 is optimised a bit better

Trust me even if the Stamina Mode doesn't look llike it is working there is still a big difference having it off and On, yes the phone is being woken up but still not as much as with it off.

Let me know how it goes and also if it deletes data from the handset - I'm looking to do it this weekend; can't afford to not be able to use my phone for any length of time during the week as its my work phone too.

i was having the same problem stamina mode worked fine but than for no reason it stopped and i could see the % drop before my eyes, but then i did a factory reset to the handset and it was fine after that works perfectly, def not a solution as there is no need for such a talked about feature to be so unreliable having said that after i did my factory reset i had it on 100% for 5 hours on standby with 15 min of screen time , just goes to show how awsome something is if it worked as advertised

Yeah, the factory reset worked for me too... for a day or so. Then boom, went to check it and it was doing the old 20 hours, no difference thing. Real pain the posterior.
In a funny sort of way, I'm glad that others aren't experiencing the same battery issues as me, as it confirms that its something that's not quite working right with my handset, rather than it being as its supposed to be, and hopefully a firmware release or simply doing Sony's suggested software repair will fix it.
On the other hand, it does make me feel that "Why is it always me?" feeling!

Another battery moaning thread

I have read a load of threads relating to the battery life, but this is slightly different. I'm on jm1 official and have been for weeks, its was fine until a day ago, now I'm sitting at work, watching the battery percentage go down everytime i look at it, I'm now talking about now when I'm using 3g, just when phones idle.
I went to sleep last night and unplugged phone before I did, fully charged. Woke up and it was on 94%....
Really my question is, is there any way to find out what's using all my battery apart from the built in function which seems to only refresh every hour! I'm not looking for juice defender or such apps

Spare parts can give you, sometimes, some rough approximations. Really, if you started experiencing issues one day, you should try to remember what you downloaded most recently, it might be poorly coded and you should look to replace it with competing software.
Also, there are somethings you wouldn't want to intentionally or unintentionally leave running in the background. Use task manager (not ATK cuz it doesn't track "running" processes very well unless they've updated) to find out if anything is running. Even the marketplace will run in the background and not let your phone properly sleep.
Also, 6 percent seems about right. 2% for all services and 3g off, 6% for 3g? I'll have to look into it when I'm not on my phone. Especially if you dress your batteries by running them down to 0s%, this is bad to do to li-on batteries, I don't know how long it takes to feel the effects but short cycles are better for the batteries health.
Ok, 3g is never on at my house I can't get it there anyway.
The only reason I run it down to 0% is because I'm using my phone and it doesn't last, its stupid to say use it in low cycles because then I'm really only getting 20% battery life anyway...
I have advanced task manager but don't really use it from what ive read I shouldn't have to. And I had thought about the recent apps I've installed and I have installed nothing much new apart from angry birds
Just not happy with the noticeable change in the space of a few days.

If consumers keep "living" with things then they deserve the crap they get. As a consumer, you have the right to be heard so make sure the people you're giving your hard earned cash to is taking your feedback and providing products and services for YOUR needs, not the company's needs.
I'm loosing 10% every night too. It's a joke and I'm hoping the updates will improve it somewhat.

ye i know. but funny thing is, it's rather random. with the same settings and nothing changed at all. sometimes overnight, it drops close to none. and some nights, it drops 10%.
i've lost 10% over 4 hours today with no usage (idle) so lol. i'm glad i'm at least getting 2 days worth of usage.
let's hope this famous froyo does something. sometime soon...
Make sure all applications are dead (ie. use samsung task manager).
Turn off apn (so that you can guarantee no apps are using data).
If you do those two things, I'm sure you won't lose more than 5% overnight.
Personally, if I do that, I don't lose more than 1% overnight.
maybe it's due to over-flashing and all. de-calibrates the battery or whatever. either way, meh.
i've probably only got this calender widget refreshing itself every 12 hours to update the day's events and my Google account on active sync. maybe some applications screwing up somewhere.
to point out, a fresh flash always gave me no problems with battery draining. (after "re-calibrating")
just updated my phone to the TEST firmware JPJG8 which is currently the latest one available thru kies which includes arabic, and have seen no changes from the original firmware the phone came with ( Originally bought from Abu Dhabi with whatever firmware that had the android market not being available )
toying with juice defender for 2-3 days my SGS laged like hell even with the RyanZ lag fix OCLF from the market and it said that i saved 1.5% more juice tho i didnt see any diff with batt, it still drained fast (full charge overnight + extra charge with phone off on my way from home to work and starting @ 100% once leaving my car and ending @ 30-20% in the afternoon about 4-5pm, need to charge a little more if i wanted it to last till 10pm T_T )
deleted it today and thought why not simply use the extended control widgets to disable the connection when the screen was off + switch off the auto sync, like how the program did but manually and amazingly batt life felt like a big nasty battery i felt the diff immediatly.
kept the program juice plotter to see how steep the batt was used to compare the results.
1. keeping my phone on 2g almost all the time except for when i need to browse the net/use msn on phone - i do use facebook/twit and i might be missing the fast notifications but 2g is good with those 2 and battery life sure is extended as i can see.
2. closing the apn when locking the phone and bringing it up when screen is on is a great idea and u can almost instantly tell ur battery life is better
3. keeping screen off as much as possible helped my batt too tho i dont like it but it works.
really noticed a diff in battery usage today so im currently backing up the phone and after a fresh format/restore session will apply root and OCLF and keep you all posted on how long the battery lasts using this method
will test for 2-3 days before reporting again.
Current Battery stat killers are
1.loads of calls
2.display due to a large amount of sms's
see you again after my test in a couple of days
I don't think jg8's a test though unless it's a new rev by kies. used it a month back, pretty awesome but I've switched.
heading to bed now, shall see what happens tonight! such adventure and excitement every night.

jg8 isn't a new rev, it was out for a while and cant be found without using the ctrl+alt+u+p (and if that = test then its not an official release) at the firmware update in kies, its a middle east version with arabic support.
ok impressions on how things went.......
voice calls = 49% with 1H 13M 23Sec
Display = 35% with 5H 0M 9Sec
Cell standby = 7% with 16H 58M 44Sec
Phone idle = 4% with 11H 58M 34Sec
Android System = 3% with 42M 30Sec on CPU Usage and just 20Sec on CPU foreground
batt did last a full day for me i guess ending @ 6% when i got home
but what use is trying to save the batt life when i hardly use the phone
lets say i browsed the net for a 30min-1hour session, watched a few youtube video's/even downloaded video's for that matter or played a game or 2 for like 30 mins to an hour
ofcourse the display will be the major batt sucker by doing this and i doubt it would last an afternoon if i did so in the morning/noon time
I guess my only solution would be an extra batt or 2 for that matter if i really wanna show-off the phone and enjoy it fully for a full day. But the problem would be charging them all without a phone stand with extra batt charger
Anyways, does the batt last a full day for me , yes it does
am i satisfied doing what i did to make the batt last , N O
I got sick of my battery running out at around 3pm at work every day so I've now bought 2 extra batteries and an external charger from spider-foot.com

Well, greetings to all.
I just wanted to share my experience regarding the battery issue.
As I purchased the phone some 12 days ago, my experience is short, but somewhat effective.
First couple of days the battery lasted for app. 24h, with lots of usage (wi-fi surfing, lots of applications installation, calls, games, music, etc.). Then, I installed some "battery-indicator-related app", fully charged battery and used the phone for 15 minutes or so and went to sleep. In the morning my battery was at 80% !(it was on stand-by the whole night), and till 2pm it was at 15%, without using the phone at all.
Battery usage stated 64% "cell standby". I thought - what the .... ?
Than I did the next thing.
Uninstalled that crappy app, installed another one (similar, but other manufacturer),turned off the phone, fully charged it, turned it on, checked that wi-fi and BT are off, turned off 3G and syncs and updates, set brightness to lowest, installed black wallpaper, used task killer to kill all unwanted apps, and decided to see for how long will battery last with that settings and very little usage (couple of calls, sms and some sudoku playing).
The result:
4 days, 18 hours - since unplugged. Battery at 39%.
@ some of your replies
overflashing - ive only flashed once.
be lucky it only drops 6% when totally idle - the whole point in writing this thread was because ive previous lost 0%! when idle for hours and hours...
I have background data off (which i dont want to have to do) i have an APN switch which i use sometimes, but tbh its tedious and i shouldnt have to do this.
as far as im concerned, when i idle the phone, it shouldnt do ANYTHING

incredible s battery not soo incredible

hey everyone,
firstly, i just wanna say that the HTC Incredible S is a solid and terrific device, previously owning an iPhone 4 i might like the HTC better, except for some things...
The battery:
i read some reviews before buying and every reviewer seemed to love the phone and what the battery has to offer. I've owned the phone for a week, and charge it through the USB cable, connected to my PC, and sometimes the wall socket.
But it seems to me that the battery is a bit short.... if i want the battery full i will let it charge overnight, the next day i powered it on, sent a few texts and listened to half a song and the battery has already drained to 70%, coming to this from an iPhone 4 is disgusting.
I've got Auto-Sync and background data working, i like push notifications for Emails and Facebook and i like the weather to update on its own, also HTC sense incase i need to do things remotely, everything else has been set not to sync.
One of my favorite features is Auto Brightness, which is enabled on default, but when i check battery use it says that 70% has gone to the display, 12% cell network and everything else. I have a task killer that kills all processes when i turn the screen off..
Any help??
Wiping the battery stats a few times helped me, I used to recharge the phone to full battery and after unplugging it from the charger, it would drop to 94% in a few seconds...Oh, after 2-3 weeks, not after a week!
Also I get twice the battery life on Cyanogen 7.1, than on any other Rom I've tried...I get at least 2-3 days with good usage, tons of mails, sms, calls, weather apps etc. Wifi and BT always on. No juice defender or anything like that...
Dropping to ~95% can also be normal though. To preserve the battery the charging circuit should cutout when it reaches 100% charge and let it discharge to 95% before turning on again.
If you do wipe the battery stats make sure you read some guides and do it properly as I've found that more often than not it will have a detrimental affect (from needing to charge before it has fully discharged, or needing to reboot etc).

wipe the stats? sorry im still new to android but so far so good, im impressed with everything else in the incredible s, its very snappy and has a bigger screen vs iPhone 4.
if it helps, i have the phone fully turned off if i charge it overnight.
also, i read on another forum that while it's still brand new it needs to run a few charge cycles to strengthen the battery, if that is true.
It always drops to 95% when the battery is fully charged. S-ON Incredible S is not allowed to wipe battery status. Should I unlock it?
Yes, I forgot to mention...to wipe the battery stats you need to unlock the Hboot...If you have Hboot 1.16.000, then the only option is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105
Unlocking the Hboot is giving you a few benefits, you get to install the CWM recovery and do a full backup of your Rom...Without unlocking the Hbtoot, if your Rom crashes, you can't flash any Rom so you have to send it back to HTC Service ...With the Hboot unlocked you can install custom Roms, you can restore a full backup, you can flash GAPPS etc, wipe battery stats directly from recovery etc etc...
So many benefits...
Now back on how to wipe the stats...The principle behind is simple, if 100%=4.3V and the stats are incorrectly set for 100%=3.9V, then you're never actually recharging the battery to full capacity, which is rubbish...
The way I do it is this - charge to 100%, boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Now use the phone until it's shutting down and then charge to 100% again.
Very important is to avoid rebooting the phone after the stats were wiped until the phone is fully recharged. Here is a thread about this process:

In my view, recharging while the phone is off makes no difference.
Yes, it's true. With all my Android phones I went through the same thing, first week or so, the battery was rubbish, but after about 2 weeks it improved a lot.
yeah, i've had it for around one week. so i might take your word for it and give it a chance, maybe for 2 weeks. i was thinking of bringing it back to the store but i'll give it a chance.
a part from the short battery at the moment it's a pretty terrific phone and i like it more than the iPhone 4.
Once the battery is conditioned, phone is rooted, custom Rom installed, bloat frozen out or uninstalled, then you can expect your phone battery to last a good full day with regular usage. No need to switch off when charging over night.
Well its incredible enough for me
It lasts a day, which is just right for me haha
Did u remove the USB immediately aft the charging?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
well i've had it for almost 2 weeks now. I charged again overnight last night and used it to listen to music and play NinJump/Bejewled on the way home today, battery uptime was just over 30 mins and the battery was down to 70% remaining. That's a bit quick if you ask me.
Not sure what's happening with your phone...but my Inc S has really good battery life, similar to Iphone 4...
At the moment is not rooted (that's why I couldn't take a screenshot) and it's on stock 2.3.3. With BT and Wifi always on, with tons of e-mails daily, browsing, calls (at least 20 minutes per day), tons of messages, etc etc
Screen brightness is always set to maximum and I get at least 2 days battery life, see attached photo...
I'm not playing games or listen to music...so I can't test that side of things and maybe that's where the problem lies.
What's your Battery Usage app saying?
Is there anything unusual listed there?

Maybe try disabling the Optus bloatware. Had a bit of an improvement when I did it to mine. Also be mindful about what apps are running in the background constantly, they could also have an impact on battery life. Screen is a huge battery killer if its constantly on, autobrightness can help slightly if you haven't enabled it already.
Thanx everybody for the replies

That battery usage sounds awesome! I have mine on Auto Brightness and WiFi turned off but its nothing like yours. My battery usage app says most of it has gone to the brightness, of course that percentage goes down when i start opening apps.
edit: im also using the stock Android 2.3.3 installed from the factory. and disabled my Advanced Task Killer, battery is still the same, but the phone now lags a lot less. so thats a plus for now.

When i first got the phone i noticed Optus loaded it with rubbish apps i'd never even touch. I disabled auto updates for the bloatware and forced stop for all the ones running. it doesnt look like i can remove them though :\

Hi when you get such good battery life, could you show us how long your screen's on for?
do you get good reception where you live? i find that seems to drain most of my battery.
Thanks

ok atm my incredible s is saying 4 hrs 26 min uptime and 1 hr 21 min awake time, 50% left. my signal here is great, the speed of the internet even beats my ADSL 2+ sometimes. should i be thinking of warranty back to store?
Before i rooted my phone i was charging my phone twice a day - this was nothing new to me as i had been charging my 3gs at least twice a day for the past two years.
However like somebody else has said, once the phone is rooted and all that optus junk has been deleted it lasts a lot longer. And you can notice the difference, my phone has been rooted for 2 days now and i have been on it none stop, modding all the appearence and downloading apps. I have been using it a lot more than i was before it was rooted and it has lasted at least twice as long. So for battery usage i should deffo root. Its HTC sense/screen that hammers your battery. Go look at battery usage and yourll see what i mean.
Also, i know this might sound stupid. But charging it through a wall socket (for me) seems quicker to charge, and seems to last longer than if its charged through a laptop/PC. Although ive thought this for my 3gs as well. If its actually true i dont know haha.

sounds just about right. my iPhone 4 needed a charge like once every 2 - 4 days, i thought it was awesome. On the Incredible S it says that 62% of the battery usage has gone to display, with very little apps on the list.
The optus apps are just sitting there. Because im on Amaysim i can't exactly use them properly because you need an actual optus account. ive tried opening some of the optus apps, they're mostly just web links and theres a Mobile TV and a Music Store app i believe, but i never at all use them. so they cant be consuming any data, memory or battery or anything, right??
Im still unsure about 'rooting'. Im guessing it's android's version of the jailbreak or a godmode on the device? i might need some help on it, i know how to flash windows mobile and jailbreak iTouch devices easily.
But then again, a lot of people have bought this phone, they cant all be experiencing terrible battery life and i dont think every user would have a root on their device.
I bought it from DickSmith here in Aus, the guy there told me there's a 1 yr back to store warranty. The phone is solid and one of the best phones i've ever had, plus a good price tag on it, its a shame to let a weak battery spoil it.
im thinking of returning it, but i heard somewhere it needs a couple weeks to strengthen the battery, if that's the case then there's no point getting a new one only to wait longer, ill give it a little more time. Plus HTC is releasing 2.3.5 software for the Incredible S soon, and wikiPedia states that it's got "Improved battery efficiency". but ill still keep root in mind for when i get more use to the device.

Yes, about 40min to 1hour display on... sometimes more...I will attach a screenshot once I get throughout the whole battery.
Yes, generally good coverage and mostly 3G...I'm on Optus.
My phone has been rooted before, but now it's on stock Rom as an experiment...
I would strongly advise on rooting, it changes the phone completely.
And remove any animation (live wallpapers) those are killing the battery.
Also found one more thing. If you've got Facebook installed it refreshes every hour, i set mine to never refresh, but you can still receive notifications
But i still don't get why the battery drains soo quickly, even on standby.
edit: found one more thing.
uptime and awake time. when i turn the screen off and awake time should stop counting as the phone is locked and im not using any apps, right?? in some cases i've noticed the awake timer still counts.
example: awake time will read 1:52:39, turn the screen off at this point. go back a couple hours later it's been counting as awake the whole time, and has half battery life it did eventhough i haven't touched the device since locking it and turning off the screen.
in some cases the awake timer will not budge when i lock the phone and turn the screen off and still find the same amount of battery life remaining when i come back.

anyone have bad battery life?

i see that a lot of people are posting amazing battery life results.. but no matter how hard I try, mine simply doesn't last 3 days with 8 hours screen on time etcetc
things ive tried:
factory reset then just install the essentials i.e. facebook, whatsapp, zite, mxplayer, pocket, myphoneexplorer.
battery calibration i.e. drain till dead/cant switch on, charge from 0 to 100 with phone off
adjust wifi, gps, autosync settings
and yet, see my attached battery stats. and that's with relatively light use (sat on my office desk) @ 2hr screen on time. no gaming, the most taxing activity was probably watching a movie with mxplayer for 20-30mins or so. the phone died completely 3 hours later.
my firmware is 81.5.39001.xt890.Retail.en.GB
it would SEEM that the battery goes down real fast with any usage.
i want to love the phone but it's not letting me.
thoughts?
firmware versions and screenshots of bad battery life please? lol
Well, mine does not last as well as advertised by others but likely better than this. It can get up to 5h of screen on time in web/video usage and maybe 3 days with less than 1h of screen on time. It also dies very quickly after 10%, 7%-4%-0% shutdown. Germany EU Retail stock firmware. Not the best battery i guess
Well my battery usually last between 1d 3 hours and 1d 20hours with usually display time between 1h 50m - 2h 30m and talk time 45m - 1h 20m talk time, with data or wi-fi always on , autobrightness always on and auto synch always on.
Facebook app and Whatsapp are mainly the guilty apps for the power consumption and data usage .... Without Facebook and Whatsapp installed and with ONLY wi-fi data i had superb power consumption .... 2d 10h and 4h 55m display time with 1h 30m talk time.
PS 2 more things that comsume power in Razr I are 1) music player and 2) FM radio

thank you for the input guys
@kourkoubas, i think ours is similar then
but i've yet to try turning off facebook autorefresh. sadly whatsapp must stay
i use Music/Pocketcasts everyday but then it's no more than 1 hour combined.
i think ill have to do more testing. that other battery stats thread got my hopes up too high i guess lol
@Simplestas does your screen brightness flash wildly just before it shuts down?
I was a bit disappointed with my battery, too. I read about those 8hrs screen on time and was just stunned. It depends a bit, how i use it .. Usually i have WiFi activated almost all day in university and at home / girlfriend. With 2.5hrs screen on time i always have ~50-60% battery left. Thats a common value for me as i sometimes need my phone for .pdf viewing. I normally have the brightness reduced to ~15%.
For me, it was a huge improvement over my old Desire HD, but it still could be better. Anyway i don't want to forget the fact that i used JuiceDefender with my DHD and used every option i have to improve battery life while i just don't have to at my razr i, it just doesn't die one evening or in the middle of the day like my DHD used to.

I don't think so.
Try testing if taking pictures with flash works with battery < 50%. If it causes immediate shutdown your battery is likely faulty.

well the battery % seems to be correct.. have attempted to calibrate it quite a number of times now.
it's just that the screen backlight becomes er.. like a flashlight running out of battery- dimming and returning to normal brightness a few times just before it shutsdown at around 2% battery level. just wondered if this is a common behaviour with xt890s/medfield cpus.
because ive never seen this in other moto phones nor any other smartphones for that matter.

well i believe that somebody out there is having really good battery life... just not everyone, sadly.
other than the outrageous 8hr screen on times etc, there are quite a few review sites praising its battery life so we must be missing something and i want to see if it's possible to find out what.
i agree though juicedefender work wonders.
used to rely on it a lot. now I just occasionally use "autosync free". it's more than good enough.
but i don't want to rely on these methods yet..

define good
let's see some stats
and what firmware are you running?
"worse" could just be the new apps you're adding to the phone?
cheers.
6h of screen time already IS GOOD, very good.
4h is what what sgs3 usually gets, 3h is what the n4 gets so 2more hours aint good? Everything gets +-2h with different usage e.g. google now and being on the move, mobile data...
It all depends on your usage but its about 25-50%better then the other quick phones around so please stop *****ing because u saw some very good screen and now cry because all your widgets, push email, chatting, mp3 destroy the screen on time you get
@yellowchilli: sry i cant see your attached screenshot, forum doesnt let me but if you usually get 2h of screen time you should call the support and get a new phone because thats not right.
edit:now i can see it. What did u do with the phone except watching a movie ? Nearly 3h aint critical i cant tell if thats normal or not it could be that you listened mp3 ... if you bought at a store go to them and get a new one anyway the store i bought in wouldnt mind changing it so i hope yours does the same

Mine also never got past the 3h30 screen-on time, even if I didn't use it for much else... should I take it to the nearest customer support site?
Also, the phone gets real hot when the screen is on for some time...

Sudden Battery life issues?

Is anyone else having issues with the battery life on their Gear Live lately? I'd say in the past 2 weeks or so the battery life has gotten absolutely awful with no reason at all. This is seriously as bad as the original Galaxy Gear at this point. When I first got my Gear Live back in June the battery would last all day easily, and I'd usually have at least 30% left at the end of the night when I stuck it on the charging cradle. Now when I get home from work it's almost always at 20%. I don't have any apps or custom watch faces on it because they all suck right now (since the SDK isn't available yet), and haven't changed my usage patterns with the watch at all since I got it. I've done factory resets, used it with other phones just to see if it's something weird with my phone, etc. Nothing helps. Anyone else having these issues suddenly? Thanks.

It seems to be getting worse each day. At this point I've double checked to make sure no apps are installed on the watch and just did another factory reset of it. We'll see how it is today. This is horrible, if it doesn't improve this thing is getting sold.
It was just a bad day.
I may start turning the screen off when I am out in the sun.
Wish there was or I knew how to quickly toggle the screen on/off

Yep, would be cool if pulling down to mute also turned the screen off unless turned on manually or by gesture.
I'm having sudden battery issues as well since yesterday. Took of the charger this morning at 8 am, by 10:20 only 75%, did reset and it changed to 49%, now at 12:45 I only have 12% left. Almost zero notifications, battery stat app shows no app use. Very confused from this.

I can't say absolutely awful, but it suddenly lasts less than half the time it usually did. I used to go two days with around 21% left when putting it to charge, since around the 24th of December, suddenly last barely a day. I find it really weird, as I am using everything the same as before. The only thing I can think of is the watch being on Android L, and the phone on 4.4.4 KitKat. This is just a theory as I have no Android L phone to test this with, that the 2 versions of Android use the Bluetooth differently and thus create a battery leak. I am not sure, I will have to wait until my Moto G gets Android L.
I am returning my watch to Google because since 2 days ago my battery dies at 4pm when it originally lasted all day and when I went to bed I still have anywhere from 20-40% left. Also my charging cradle broke and won't stick to the watch. Had to use rubber bands to charge it. I wish I hadn't bought the Samsung Gear Live because it is a piece a junk... The Asus Zen watch costs the same and is much better quality....

I thought I was alone
Mine went from going around 2 days to now about 6 hours. I
I've nuked it and my phone to no avail.
The only think that changed was I upgraded to Lolly Pop. Would love a fix for this
What a scam. If this is how they treat early adopters I'm not going to buy another
I just bought a used gear live, and my battery was terrible with almost nothing but a watch face really added. I went to the google fit app on the watch and scrolled all the way to settings and disabled it and it seems much improved already! I think the step tracking is killing the battery somehow.
So Today I had the wifi on the watch turned off and also had Google Fit turned off. Got a good bit of notifications for texts and such and used voice to replay to the majority of them. With always on screen turned on half the day and tilt to wake motion turned off all day it is at 50% and has been on about 14 hours and says it still has 14 hours left. I am pretty happy with that!
I was having battery issues at well. It got so bad that my watch wouldn't last from 8am until about 2pm. Finally I just stopped wearing it for a few weeks. Picked it up again a week or so ago and got the update. Since then battery life is back to what is expected. However, I haven't added my wifi hot spots yet.
Try the app SWapp True Dark. It allows you to lower your screen's brightness more than what is offered by default. I now get 24 hours out of my watch on a single charge and that is WITH the screen set to "always on"!

Should also remember that Li ion batteries typically have a charge life of 500 cycles or 18 months before degrading quite a bit. Some of you with older ones will start to have batteries go.

Most of the other settings stayed at stock. The governor (interactive) was tweaked using heimdall's tweaks ( posted in z5 themes and apps section by a user, along with those power tweaks and setprop tweaks)
I felt amplify made most of the magic here. Helped a lot with wakelocks. Searched the net for guide to use amplify and it worked brilliantly. Phone was down to 50% and I had an SOT of 4.5+ hours.
Will try the new kernel and let you know in a day or two. I am pretty sure the kernel would work better if I gave it a day to settle.
For the previous kernel which I was testing, it was it's first run.

Pretty sure I can get it to around 8 hours SOT atleast! But since I am very busy nowadays and my internship started today, it's gonna be a little hard
Best for me is 4:48 as reported by Battery Monitor Widget, but mostly is 3D games so I think is pretty good
I have my Phone 3 hours off Power, Battery goes down to 60% and the main app draining power is the Display with 17% as per the battery consumption chart.
In the Details to the batteryconsumption of the display it says the display was on for 1:35, however I hardly turned it on.
That is the same since LP and even with MM I reset already 3 times. no change.
I would love the meet someone with that great performance. mine seems just broken :/

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Sony Xperia Z5 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I get 5 hours on average from 100% without using Wi-Fi and on H+ and my average use is what's app, Instagram, mobile payment, snap chat ( eats a lot) and taking pictures. My brightness is at half with automatic turned on

Such a pity that the battery is not awesome maybe due to bloatwares

Actually I hope so. I am one step away from rooting my phone and hope that this might help, especially with greenify having root access.
The device is almost unusable anymore with this battery life. I factory reset once a week, don't even have many apps or do much with it but it still lasts just half a day.
After a factory reset the first 2-3 days are almost fine up to one day.
I dont even think 2 days are possible if I don't activate the whole time...

Xperia Z5 Tmobile USA
2.5HR SOT
Mobile radio likes to stay active throughout the day. Have tried many roms/ factory resets.
Hopefully next software update....feel like i've been saying that for years about various android phones...

Similar here on T-mo USA
I wonder if the lack of proper tmous radio tuning leads the phone to drain on LTE... Have noticed more drain (phone doesn't seem to have doze lines anymore even though BBS shows doze..) after rooting/xposed. So much that I uninstalled xposed as a test.
Going to try dropping back to HSPA and see if its better.

Not sure if that may attribute to it but i dont doubt it...
I did have the courage to flash one of those US roms, even though my FPS (fingerprint sensor ) didin't work...
But eventually after a few days, battery drain came back....

Hmmmm may be onto something here, right away I'm noticing that Yappy is not hanging on sending messages. What I think was happening for me was low LTE signal was causing Yappy to wake up every minute to restart itself. Not sure why Yappy wasn't showing in battery settings, but my phone seems to be connected now that I'm on a 'stable network'. Really wish we could get the tuning on tmous :/
I'm getting average 7-9 hours SOT with my Xperia Z5 Dual E6683... btw is it normal for the GPS indicator at the battery usage page to show that it's constantly turned on throughout the whole day eventhough it's turned off?

Aaaand nope, got the fast dormancy wakelocks and battery drained faster than before. Reflashing the stock system and wiping cache now to see if I can get doze lines again.
Edit: Battery is better but I think because of things I did after reflashing. Installed WLD since I have root now and noticed that google maps (and later android pay) were generating NLP wakelocks, so cleared data on google maps since I have location reporting off already and then denied location to android pay and it seems to be back to normal. If this is stable for a few days I may try Xposed again.
On average daily use with WiFi on and location enabled most of the time I will get 5 hours SOT. I have pushed it close to 6 with reducing my brightness to almost nothing and only using the phone for messaging. Several factors will affect SOT. For me getting group messages or picture messages drops battery life. Using Chrome also drops it.

Are you asking the app usage in the day? Funny enough my battery life today was a definite miss but it got me through the workday and that's all I need.
Nah I meant like what apps do you have that are non-stock..
But looks like my phone is back to not dozing.. losing ~10% overnight, where I used to lose 3%. Looks like I'm getting the Mobile Radio Active bug displaying through google play services. Clearing caches of apps that appear to be causing it as I go...
