[Q] radio/antenna quality? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's probably too early to answer this question, so maybe this thread will be a placeholder. But does anyone have any experience using the One where reception is weak? Are the tiny plastic windows enough for the antenna to work? how is signal strength in general?
Thanks!

People who have been to HTC events have tested this. I will try when I go to the event in newcastle on thursday. They said they couldnt get it to drop a bar.

It does not use the tiny plastic antennas, it uses the top and bottom pieces of metal.

the radio/atenna quality is excellent, tried it with calls/gps/wifi. locks fast with wifi and gps and calls and loud and clear

Do you have WM6.5 or do you have android installed on your HD2? You should have posted this in one of the general forums (HD2 WM6.5 or Android general) so I would know and could provide the app to do this.
I have NAND Android and I am currently running on HyperDroid-GBX-v12.
Please advise if there is any way to get better signal or any ROM which is known for better signal strength
Try a few different radios. You flash them just like a Windows Mobile ROM. Flashing a new radio will not erase your Android ROM or CWM or anytthing else, just replaces the radio.
I have a sticker like this just over the antenna, it gave me 1 bar more in a place where I had only 1-2 i reached 2-3 bars in Android.

I want to think it works, it was less than $1usd, so it won't hurt and it is not visible.

You will keep running into problems. Switch from WIND to a better network. If you don't need Data. Chat-r is brilliant. I Just did the same a week ago. Life is much easier.

Lol, those stickers don't do anything amigo. Ask yourself "how does a piece of gold painted plastic boost my phone's ability to receive or transmit a signal?"
Placebo effect at best.

The signal levels in this video are my exactly experience.
It is cooper I think help to "concentrate" more signal to the antenna (in/out).
Probably just works with the GSM(2G) signal -which I always use-
I have been using it for +7 years now (total cost < $3usd).
edit: If anyone plan to buy it.. don't spend more than $1. there are some crazy prices out there.

OK did a 5 min test w/o and W the sticker on my HD2 running on 2G t-mobile USA in the exactly same place.
W/o the sticker:
-77dbm 18asu
With the sticker:
-73dbm 20asu
Again only 2G (3G might get worst) and don't pay more than $1
the technical idea behind those stickers is real. the sticker itself is a thin copper foil. When hit by EM radiation it will provide a greater surface contact and will radiate the EM energy on it's own. It's a bit complicated, i cannot explain it in english.
However think of it like when you have a piece of metal placed near a magnet. Even if the piece of metal is not magnetic by itself it can become magnetized and will attract other pieces of metal by its own even if the original magnet was removed.

Good to hear that I'm not living a lie having those stickers. I knew that that weird design , which looks like aliens did it, has some engineering on it.
By the way, i have not try to improve my signal via software bc in my simple mind to do something that works you need to fool the phone to think it has always low signal, therefore forcing it to "radiate" more and improve my reception.
I have the phone in my pocket.. and I don't want a free vasectomy.

The functionality is "induced electromagenticity". The radio signal crosses the thin copper on sticker and induces current. This current reproduces voltage which beams signal again. Something like a relay functionality. ...for poor man

No, it has to be close to the antenna so I placed in the plastic area where the "void" screw is and the sticker will cover a little of the sim, the hd2 antenna is around there. I didn't want to stick it(bc it interferes with the sim, etc) so I carefully placed and put some tape in the edges of the sticker so it wont move.
All this is under the metal battery door.
attached sketch.
Many thanks, it's worth a try!

I see only comments about the sticker thing. Not about the flash. I really doubt the signal will be any better with the *.apk provided in above post. RIL tweaks seem to be the better choice because it depends very much on where you live (at least so it seems from other posts).

3G Nexus 7 Not Fully Compatible with old Nexus 7 Cases

Well its seems Google were right, the 3G Nexus has a slight difference in that the Side Microphone has moved position due to the SIM Card Slot, so you can not use an existing Nexus case with the 3G Version if you still want to use the Mic for Google Voice etc.
Example Images Attached Below
Also top microphone moved to the side just above the power button, which is kinda annoying since none of my cases now fit.

Cheers, Had not noticed the top one, too busy trying to mod my leather case for the side one, Rats!!!
Yeah I thought about modding the Asus travel cover but I don't think its worth the hassle lol, might just get another cheapy third party case and mod that to fit instead
But there shouldnt be any problems with cases liko moko, ivso slim cases/stands, right?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
There might be some issues with other cases again because of the mic placement, but tbh it's not all that much of an of an issue unless you use the mics
If someone finds a case that has all ports exposed, please let us know.
To be totally honest, I am please they have redesigned the back of the Nexus 3G. Hopefully it will mean that the left screen left problems will be a thing of the past.
This case should still work fine:
http://www.amazon.com/MoKo-Automati...=1353023742&sr=8-1&keywords=moko+nexus+7+case
And I highly recommend it. I've bought two (for me and family members) and it's rock solid. Plus, the seller is the best on Amazon.
drilling a hole in the proper place will solve all problems....
Quick compilation of possible differences between 3G and Wifi versions - if anyone with both models can confirm these, that'd be great!
1) Side mic placement : confirmed in first post
2) Top mic placement : confirmed by WarningHPB in second post. Do you have a picture of the top edge to show case manufacturers?
3) Headphone jack placement :
- Mentioned in this thread. However, I'm not able to spot a significant difference in location in available (but separate) pictures of the two versions:

Headphone jack seems unchanged, just put a tpu case on my 3g and it lines up. as mentioned, the two mics have moved significantly. I can say that the tpu case I have doesn't seem to adversely affect the microphones, every test I've run on my Nexus 7 worked just fine. Would still probably be worth drilling out the holes for the mics though.
Housing design changed in 3g? Screen lift on the left side removed ASUS?
Couldn't you just cut some holes in the appropriate places of your current case to remedy the problem? Like take a really hot pin and poke it through the areas where there were changed features?

Thanks for that. Very interesting. Sadly doesnt appear they have changed the way the left side is designed..unless the one they are comparing it to has also been redeisgned. So, its possible that the screen will still lift if that is right. But then they could have changed other things that are not visible from this.

The Wifi Version on the left of the image is a Launch Day device. So it is from very early in the production run I would imagine. Never had any problems with this particular one no screen lift etc.
The 3G One is also a Launch Day device for the 3G Model. (No Problems with that one either, no screen lift etc)
I just took Needle (for Sowing, not the ones crackhead use, although they would work)
Held it with some Pliers, Heated it up with a Lighter..
And Poked a hole...
Works Great, people in Hangout can hear me fine, Sounds as good as with no cover.

HTC One WiFi death-grip

Hi guys,
I noticed something rather strange today. My One looses its wifi signal when I hold it (upper side) with my right hand. I've made a video to demonstrate how quickly it looses the signal and regains it (when I remove my hand).
The thing is, it doesn't always loose the signal all the way. I guess it depends on the signal strength of the room I am in. If I'm next to the router the signal doesn't drop at all, but as I move away to the next room, you can see what happens.
Here's the link to the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbprCTr4JQg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
And I was starting to believe that my One is perfect.
Just watched your video and tried it myself and yes it does loose the WiFi signal.
Suppose it's the WiFi antenna that obstructs the signal.. guess that's the way it is

the antennae are part of the back, so there is always a deathgrip, don't hold it like that it seems very unnatural anyways

I've just tried this and had no loss of signal.
I guess all phones are like this though, the antennas are in the back somewhere and depending on the phone and where you hold it your hand is going to block the signals to some extent.

I know directly gripping the antenna will affect the signal strength. But I'm gripping the sides not the back; there's not much contact with the plastic strip at the back.
And sometime when holding the phone in landscape you tend to cover those areas with your hand.. Till now, this hasn't been a 'problem' for me.
Ya it's definitely there, but it's pretty good. I had to cup both hands around it to get the signal strength really low. With one hand, I could only make it lose one bar.
I guess don't cup your hand around the antenna if you are in a place with less than ideal WiFi signal.

Ya, but the strange this was how quickly the signal dropped for me. It's not a deal breaker anyway, it's a good thing the wifi antenna isn't at the bottom!
I've just tried it and can't seem to get my signal to drop like that. It doesn't lose anything.

what about with a case? In using a basic tpu case. Androidify. It fits very tight around the phone and notice the sensitivity to WiFi and signal. I didn't notice this until I took off the case. My phone was flying. Once I put it back there was some lag time for stuff to load

[POLL] Does your Nexus 5 have death grip issues?

Hi, this is something I generally like to ask with new phones. Does your Nexus 5 have any death grip issues? I personally tried gripping it every way I could and there was no signal loss whatsoever
With my HTC One if I would put the bottom left into my palm it would drop signal, and I know the iPhone 4 would lose signal if you put the bottom left into your palm as well.
Just want to know what y'all have experienced!
No NeXus 5 is better than every other phone

No grip issue here other than needing a case to feel comfortable with it.
I'm thoroughly impressed with the N5 reception on tmo, death grip and all!
NX5
According to some of my buds over at S4GRU, the Nexus 5 is a champ in terms of Radio Frequency performance on Sprint, so I'd assume it's a monster on all of the other carriers.
EDIT: I believe that the Nexus 5's RF success comes from it's envelop tracking, which enables it to use more power to grab signals at a lower power consumption.

My thoughts exactly! I was even trying to make it lose signal but it wouldn't!
No such issues noted on 700mhz, 1700mhz or WiFi bands. Better WiFi than just about any phone I've owned, too..
So two people voted no but didn't care to explain their problem?
wasnt aware of all this. hmm. maybe ill buy some hulk hands and grip it til it snaps in two then check my signal.

Your HTC One has an aluminum build, the iPhone you referenced has a metal band around the sides. This doesn't play nice with RF so special antennas and designs are used to make it work. They usually place them around the outside rather than the traditional place inside the enclosure (this is what those little black lines along the outside of the iPhone 4-4S are), but you run into issues like the "death grip" for example. It's still cool technology though.
The Nexus 5 is all plastic, so there is no metal build to interfere with signal like on the aforementioned handsets.
No issues.

[Q] [QUERY][HARDWARE][ANTENNA]Moto G XT1068 : Cellular Antenna

Hello Everyone.
Well this is not a Software development thread.
Just a thread for understanding the Cellular antenna location on the Motorola Moto G (2014) or the XT1068.
I have serious issues of signal reception at home and I've tried every phone from a Nokia 2610 to a Nexus 5 and now a Moto G XT1068. On all phones I have faced network issues.
Now, I've had enough and I was just trying to research on how to increase the reception of a mobile signal.
Of course level of maturity : Beginner (I can't really tear down the phone and create circuitry for better reception)
So here are a few pics and I just wanted to know which exactly is the antenna and it's location on the phone for cellular network reception. Reason for this is I want to place a Aluminium foil or some Copper wires (not solder!) just to increase the density of the signal or increase the path of the signal.
I might be wrong here, in understanding this. Do educate me or direct me to something that might.
Please help me with this and also do please, give some tips of how to increase the reception. And no I do not want to buy a signal repeater or a femtocell.
The first reads UMTS CDMA 1101 and is at the Bottom Left.
The second is UMTS 0918 on the Right at the Side / Edge
And the last GPS 0296 at the Top right corner.
Which indicates the Cellular antenna for mobile signal reception?
Thank You in advance.
and Happy New Year.
Its probably above the camera on the right but I doubt an aluminum foil or copper plate will work because of the gap between the antenna on the board and the plastic body but you could try what's the worst that can happen ...
couldn't that be GPS antenna?

The location like you said above the camera to the right , reads GPS 0296. I reckon it could be a GPS antenna. Can you clarify?
I also have not put an image of the Top Left side that reads, BT/WIFI 1101. This should be the Bluetooth and Wifi antenna right?
I generally dissect my phones before I buy a new one and through my experience, generally that pattern on the plastic means a Major antenna is behind it could be WiFi/gps/modem what I would tell you is cover the inside of the removable back with aluminum foil see if it works and don't bother with copper cause it may stain or cause overheating and even if the foil works it will probably increase the sr rating but its worth a shot good luck and happy new year

I think by this quote you really answer it your self, you WILL need a cell phone signal booster , which is normally a outside antenna, a booster and a internal antenna, these normal cost as much as a phone (and more) .......
TBH you can't really apply a 'FIX' to phone when that is not the problem.
You need to have a signal into home in 1st place, solving this cant be done cheaply
