[Q] can you port a kernel? - XDA-University

so i have a samsung vibrant and i do ports from the i 9000 to the vibrant. mymost recent port was built on the mackay kernel. therefore when i created this rom it is extremely laggy since i have it running semaphore. vibrant has no mackay kernel. therefore is it possible to port kernels as i dont know how to build a kernel from source.

if by port u mean like those rom porting method ie copy pasting binaries, no, u cant. u still need to recompile kernel from source.
kernel binary is specific to which device it compiled for, not cross compatible to other device even if the other device is identical.
assuming the sgs and vibrant got similar specs which would make the "port" easier, u need to grab the sgs kernel source u meant to "port", make required changes to it then compile.
thats kernel port, need to recompile from source one way or another.

yeah ive got a LOT of reading to do like for example: learning how to compile, learning what i need in general to create the kernel. thanks man

You should by start by building a simple kernel from proper sources imho

So if there is no actual open source for jellybean for my phone do I download a kernel that's already been built in my phones section and use use that as a base?

You can't use an existing kernel as "base", you have to getthe aource

Well I got some research to do then because Samsung dropped the vibrant a while ago

[Q] I9000 GalaxySENSE and GalaxyCOMB ROMs for Captivate?

I have gotten I9000 ROMs to install on my Cappy before, but now with both of Kenia1234's AMAZING GalaxySENSE/COMB ROMs for the I9000 I get an assert error(Status 7) when I try to flash it in CWM. Why is this? Any solutions would be Awesome!
I honestly dont know anytime about the romsb our the error. Just wondering if it has to do with version of cwm, ie v3 vs v2?

It does, and we are supposed to be on CWM 3.X.X.X

I think you have to have a special kernel for sense/honeycomb for it to work, also are you sure they are CWM installable and which CWM they are compatible with
also if no special kernel is needed make sure you have an I9000 kernel since that is what they are for
Im using a reoriented kernel, specifically for the I9000 Sense port, made to make it work on the Captivate. I'm no noob, not saying anyone is, this just really got my attention cuz I love sense and wanna try Honeycomb out for awhile!

Wouldn't it be better to explain how in detail you did it so there won't have to create another thread for this

[Q] How does a module work?

Title says it all. I'm thinking we could use x8 undervolt modules.
Undervolt came in x8 before they even started custom kernels!

If you remember correctly someone did post the UV modules , just that no one bothered to touch them .
This was sent from a Galaxy Ace. Problem?

You are wrong. Madman_amit developed an undervolt kernel for the ace. He posted it in our group for testing. But undervolting did not yield the expected battery backup. So the project was ditched.
For anyone who wants to try i can post it or request amit to do the same.

i had created and i still am using my own custom kernel just haven't posted it on xda and project is not dead at all.. its just that time do not permit me to push development at fast rate as what dragonn is doing.. i do have changed lot of things in my kernel and as stated above uv didn't worked as expected and at time of an0nym0us_ was actively making kernel we did some testing but doesn't look promissing..and to tell you many of the kernel currently in dev section are undervolted (even coolya's official one) but they do not say specifically...
my current custom kernel have several patches from allover but not significant enough to release

[Kernel][I9100][17/07/2012] 7 comp : one rom to fit all your wishes

Hi,
in next days you will see here a new rom for GS2.
It is based on AOSP, AOKP, CM9 and and other sources + some personnal developpement.
The result is a really usefull and efficient rom that you can use either if you are a developper of an all day base user.
You will find a lot a feature. The rom is fully configurable.
Interested ??
Keep informed

Quick question about compiling

I've seen the guide to compiling cm10 but I want to know how to compile AOKP and cherry pick sources. If I use the cm10 guide isn't that just on how to compile cm10. I mean how do you customize that. Does that apply to 4.2.2 thank you for any help provided

As far as I know, those are kernel sources. Not the chipset sources which we need.

But cm is in development. In developer section you find beta Version. Had some bugs and things that woun't Work. But i use it daily and in my opinion much better than stock jb.

Yes i've tried it and its great but still have no camera working and i need it to set it as my daily rom. And to fix that sourses are needed

You think devs wouldn't fix it if there are sources, or any other way?
Sent from Galaxy S Advance I9070
Of course devs can fix it without them. But it would be much easer with sourses.
