Ubuntu Touch? - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious. Is anyone working on a port of Ubuntu Touch for the RAZR i? If the answer is yes then awesome, if not then I'm gonna give it a shot. Would you guys be interested in using it?

I'd be interested in using it.

I was just reading up on it and officially they use cm10 as a base but they say you can also use an aosp ROM as a base. That means I could theoretically use the retail EU ROM for the RAZR i as the base and make porting a lot easier
Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk 2

I'd be interested if it's installable as a dual-boot (and yes, that's possible; look at the HP Touchpad (which I also have) which now dual-boots Ubuntu Touch and webOS).

Dual booting would totally be possible. Just have to use a boot loader that can handle it. Don't think there exists a custom boot loader for the RAZR i yet though. Although I don't think it would be too difficult to install syslinux for example.
Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk 2

Maybe we could use moboot like the HP Touchpad? It's open source so in theory we could compile it for the Razr i.

It's definitely possible. And even easier than porting an android rom. You can use any aosp ROM as a base. Ubuntu just needs the kernel the drivers, and the radio. That's it. There are step by step instructions in the Ubuntu wiki on how to "plug in" these files into Ubuntu touch, then you compile, and flash using adb. It's fairly straight forward. Once it's working, I'll work on porting a boot loader that supports multiple partitions. I know that's possible because I'm currently dual booting cm10 and Arch Linux on my evo 3D.
Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk 2

I'd be interested in trying it out, but I also want to encourage this because it sounds like it would give us a good AOSP base to work off of for other Android ROMs.

Yes. Didn't you notice the name change?:silly:
Op. Care to tell us anything else other than 'I did it'. Maybe the process, make a guide, anything at all that would make the community better?
Lol. Sorry. There is a ROM in the original development section that let's you dual boot. You can download the boot image from there.

Do you have a custom ROM and Ubuntu or stock ROM with Ubuntu?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
AOKP 4.2 and Ubuntu. I was running the Multi ROM from the Original Android Development section. It does just that, lets you running several ROMS. I don't have much of a need other than AOKP and Ubuntu but it's awesome you can choose which ROM to boot. I wound up screwing up everything last night by messing around. I wiped my entire tab. I loaded Ubuntu on my PC and managed to reinstall Ubuntu on my tablet, while wiping out everything. So now I have to redo everything. That's what I get for messing around with things I have no idea about. But for me thats the only way I learn.
If you want to run Ubuntu too, check out the Multi ROM. Works very well for me and seems like for quite a number of others.

I have Multiboot working on my Nexus 7, it's quite easy actually:
- First flash an working rom to your Nexus
- Flash the modified recovery using fastboot flash recovery xxxxx.img
- Flash the Multiboot ZIP using the recovery
- Flash the modified kernel ZIP using the recovery
Reboot and you will see the Multiboot boot selector
Currently I have JB and Ubuntu installed on my Nexus 7, trying to get WebOS and Bodhi working as well

Well depends on your knowledge, but it's not easy, it's quite a job and Ubuntu for phones is right know in pre-Alpha stage so... Yeah it will not be good for any everyday use yet, since you even can't play your own music on it yet
Btw Dev you're going to need to make a factory image for our device also so we can revert back to Android.

@Dev apparently you will be able to flash this via recovery and restore to Android using recovery so if you download their maguro .zip and port it to our devices we'll be able to flash ubuntu using our current kernel Then even the biggest noob can flash ubuntu but dunno what they're going to have it for
People with other devices than the maguro DO NOT install this as it's for the maguro only!
Or if you're a dev going to port it, well then just go ahead.

OUDHS Recovery is my favorite on my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 and Shabbypenguin created it. This is a port with minimal changes for the Motorola (DROID) RAZR HD device. The controls are self-explanatory, and reason why I love this Recovery over normal CWM or TWRP. Maybe you will too. You can get to Rainbow Mode by scrolling down the list a few times.

The touch controls are what makes this unique. I wouldn't port it just because it was a pretty CWM

Perfect in Razr HD XT925.
Works beautifully and the additional safety and functionality is a big improvement.

Just my 2ct, (pls don't take this as offense, I have full respect for anyone who puts dev work into a device like the vanquish platform!!) there are important things to "fix" among the CM10-compatible kernel. But why put efforts into "nice-to-have", rainbow-colored-projects that offer no real new functionality? Why not join scrilax, epinter and the kernel team and help out fixing the rest of missing things that hold back the platform from being fully supported by the CM? Or is it just for the fun about it? Just wondering.

Since the developers work for nothing, they tend to work on what they are excited about doing. Inless you are helping to fixing the kernel problems you have no room to talk, except to say thank you. Are you paying them to fix the kernel problems? This is more then a rainbow it is swipe controlled recovery. So I say thanks matt for the port

I am not a kernel dev.
I was learning to port CWM and TWRP to devices and thought this would be fun.
Those others have a great project going on but me making a recovery for kicks and giggles has nothing to do with it.
This is not my job, and honestly if I could help I would have already.
Swipe controls are a new feature and its not just a pretty rainbow. If you don't like it you can flash something else

Devs waiting for ubuntu touch to be stable.. Then they will port it. Just see the ubuntu touch thread for more updates.
I get the idea that they should wait for the stable release, but wouldnt it be easier to get wifi, sms, phone working now?
Anyway great work devs

Not quite. pawitp's said in his Ubuntu thread that modifications need to be made in order for sms and other phone capabilities to work. And these ports are made directly using Ubuntu's source code. So until they update it with the neccesary modifications needed in order to get GSM and data working, its not very likely we'll see functional ports past the current stage.

So pawtip is waiting for the final code to be released because then the modifications needed will be there or will be updated??

In this recent review, the newly finished Sms, calling and power management capabilities have been shown.
So basically this is good enough to have all basic operations of a phone like wifi,3g,calling,sms,camera etc.So it's very much possible to have functional ports now .
