[Nub Q] Unlocked Bootloader - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For HTC phones I've always noticed that they release the dev. edition which comes with an unlocked bootloader and is therefor rootable. Then it must be true that the regular release comes with a locked bootloader, is there generally a fast update where someone finds a way to unlock it or is the best bet to just buy a dev edition?

In the US unlocking the bootloader from a phone you get from at&t etc. is not completely legal: .. that being the reason why they sell the htc one dev version there!
You can unlock the phone via htcdev though It's simple and officially from htc :victory:

WRONG. Please do not spread incorrect information.
Unlocking a bootloader on ANY DEVICE OR CARRIER in the USA is 100% LEGAL.

I remember reading somewhere that the HTC One X+ was given extra restrictions by AT&T so it was harder to unlock. Can you have a bootloader sent to a website/company to have it unlocked for a small fee?

No because if HTC dev is'nt avaliable to unlock bootloader than it's uasally xda folks that crack the bootloader and most xda folks share the unlock, plus if only some small company can crack the bootloader for a fee, the development would'nt be very good

What does "unlocked" mean for the htc one dev edition?

I have the 64 gb htc one dev edition and I thought I understood the unlocked part, but then I saw a bunch on here about unlocking bootloaders on the dev edition and that got me confused. Is the unlocked part referring to the ability to take it between carriers or the state of the bootloader?
Assuming I root my one, I still want dev updates (ota rather than flashing roms) but I also don't know what happens if I am rooted and then take an ota update. Finally, since I won't be flashing, I don't need to unlock my bootloader, right? Thanks!

Both.
Some people re-lock their bootloaders at some point and then "re-un-lock" later on, but in general you shouldn't have to worry about unlocking the dev edition in either sense of the word .

There's no financial cost to unlock your boot loader, its free.

I was going off a FAQ in the General section
Please note, In order to flash any custom Recoveries, you need to have unlocked Bootloader. Barring the open Bounty, the only viable option right now is to buy an unlock code from Motorola.

Motorola does not charge you for the boot loader unlocking code, the only cost is your warranty if you do not have a developer edition.

You can only unlock on VZW and AT&T if you get the developer edition, and the cost is $50 more than the standard device.

So if you just get the regular one, you are stuck with the stock ROM?
Also, is it possible to get the VZW dev edition? I just went through the whole Moto Maker process and didn't see anything about developer edition.

Developer editions aren't eligible for MotoMaker.
The unlock process it free, but as mentioned, it is not currently possible to unlock a non dev Verizon or Att model and the Dev models are not available through Moto Maker. If you're looking at another carrier then VZW or ATT you can unlock from what I read, but since theyre not DEV editions you lose your warranty.

I'm pretty sure they're referring to the SIM carrier lock. Correct me if I'm wrong folks.
I have a Verizon Dev edition with my boot loader unlocked. And I did not have to pay for a unlock key.

[Q] Is the Verizon one unlocked?

Wow I am looking into getting a ONE M7, and I am so confused.
So many models.
Basically I am only going to be using it abroad, so I need an unlocked version.
Also, I like to install a clean ROM so I would prefer a variant which allows me to do this.
I found a good deal on a Verizon One M7, but not sure if it suits these needs.
plz help!
Thank you!

Absolutely not. Verizon HTC one are locked to Verizon. Even the bootloader can't be unlocked via htcdev.com.
look for a M7_UL unlocked

Thanks for that! The unlocked versions are expensive. Any other carrier's ONE I can maybe buy and turn into an unlocked version?

If you buy a carrier version you'll have to sim-unlock it using a paid code and if that doesn't work you'll have to s-off the phone to use the sieempi method to sim-unlock.
stay away from Sprint and Verizon variant, you want a gsm variant (M7_UL)

I am looking at ATT versions now (still decent prices). So... hardware wise it's the same as the Google Play Edition? Will I be able to buy an UNLOCKED ATT M7 (which I am looking at the moment) and turn it into a PLAY EDITION M7 (via different ROM)?
* if there's one thing I can't stand is carrier's bloat and so on...

Yes but you will probably need S-OFF
Thank you! S-OFF is something I buy? Or something I do? Or something that I need to ask the seller about?
Thx so much

The way you'll achieve S-OFF depends on what bootloader version you'll have so its basically impossible to tell at this point. On some early bootloader versions, you can s-off for free using exploits posted in this forum (revone, moonshine, rumrunner). Latest hboot version (1.57) will require Sunshine exploit which cost 25$ (but well invested imo)
So when you'll get your phone, try to sim-unlock it first using a code (you must be 100% stock rom to use a sim-unlock code)
Then, If you want S-OFF, do it before updating. Each time you do update the phone to a newer version, you decrease your chances of getting S-OFF.
You'll only need s-off if the sim-unlock code method doesnt work and if you want to do a full conversion of your phone to a GPE version for example.
Thanks so much!!!!!!

S-OFF will not sim-unlock your phone but you'll be able to sim-unlock using another method (sieempi) which require s-off unlike the sim-unlock code.

Unlocking M9 phone from T-Mobile?

I have a question and could find an answer, well maybe a few... First if you have an unlocked version of the m9 directly brought from HTC all updates come from them not any carriers? With that being said if you by a T-Mobile version and get an unlock code from them will updates still come from them or HTC?
Unlocking phone has nothing do with updates. If you have T-Mobile version doesn't matter if it's Sim locked or unlocked, updates still come from T-Mobile. If you want updates from HTC you have to buy the unlocked model or Dev edition directly from HTC site.

You can always use the SunShine app and change your device to any model you want.. including the developer edition and then you will get updates straight from HTC.

hi can the T-Mobile Version be unlocked/Rooted?
hi i have an HTC M9 from T-mobile, i was checking the boot loader but it doesn't have the fast boot option, I've played around and i noticed that in download mode the fast boot command worked. so. i was wondering it can be unlocked or if T-mobile Locked it like the Xperia Z1s.
i watched a video on how to root it on "any variant" but theirs have been unlocked, i think they have Developers edition but now im wondering if its just mine that is locked.
yes can verify.. you can sim unlock device. travel a lot so need to be able to pop in a telcel chip. only snag is you need to flash a non-tmobile base rom first, Then it will ask for unlock sim code and your set. can leave it on non-tmobile base rom or like me reflash tmobile rom and your set. hope that helps

Yes, sunshine will s-off your device. That will allow you to change cid and mid and turn your device into a dev edition or any other M9 released. Just note the radio/modem of your phone won't change. It won't gain support for other bands, but some may be disabled depending on the RUU you flash.

XT1060 Bootloader unlock

Hi just wondering if i buy this phone http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Blac...41?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item280344d421
Will i be able to unlock the bootloader? assuming it's not verizon if coming from hong kong or would i be wrong? cheers
I'm guessing the "unlocked" in the title means SIM unlocked. If it isn't a developer edition, your only chance to unlock the bootloader is Sunshine.

Would this still hold true given that this is coming from Asia? or are all xt1060s locked aside from the dev model?
As far as I'm aware, yes.

Do you mean that Sunshine might eventually work to unlock the bootloader on XT1060s? or is it working right now?
(I know I can check by just running the app on the phone, but I don't own the phone yet either, was considering buying one)
EDIT: just did a little more research, seems like sunshine will work for XT1060s if it hasn't been upgraded to 4.4.4 . If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me.

I'm not aware of the XT1060 being sold by any other carriers that Verizon in the USA. All Verizon XT1060's are SIM Unlocked (aka carrier unlocked) due to FCC 700mhz C-Block rules.
Moto only gave out the Bootloader unlock code for the Developer Edition XT1060. Sunshine will work so long as the phone is on 4.4.2 and has NEVER been flashed with 4.4.4 or higher.

It was either just lucky, or you used the China Middle Seller/Middle man that was available long ago and not Moto's web site.
