download-droid-4-jelly-bean-update-98-72-18 - Motorola Droid 4

Yesterday, Verizon approved Jelly Bean for the DROID 4 as build 98.72.18, but as is typical, Motorola sent the first wave of updates out to members of their feedback network (soak testers) this morning. And since that happened, the file has been pulled and made available to everyone with the device.
We have instructions for you below, so if you do not feel like waiting for the update to be pushed to your device, feel free to jump below.
The official changelog can be found here. here
Instructions:
*These are the instructions from the RAZR HD update, but they should work for the DROID 4 as well.
*You have to be running the official Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) update of build 6.16.217. You also have to be completely stock.
1. Download the update file here: here
2. Drop that file on your SD card, not internal storage.
3. Turn phone off, and reboot into recovery.
*Hold both Volume Up and Down along with Power until you see the boot menu. Use Volume Down to hover over “Recovery.” Press Volume Up to select it.
*Once you see the Android and Exclamation point, press both Volume Up and Down at the same time.
4. Select “apply update from external storage.”
*Use Volume keys to highlight, Power button to select.
5. Then select the file you downloaded from above. It should already be on your SD card.
6. Watch as the update applies.
7. Once finished, choose the “reboot” option and enjoy!
DON'T FORGET TO SAY THANKS!

FYI, you will lose root if you do this without Voodoo unrooting first, as I just mistakenly did

yes ots's will cause you to loose root

So do I need to De-root and remove safestrap before installing this, or can I just install and then root this?

Safeboot and restore complete stock ICS. Don't worry about losing root. RAZR blade method is confirmed to work. Unless u have no access to PC then yes backup root with voodoo only if u are using super user latest binary. Restore root after jb update.

does anyone know if this changes the kernel as with gingerbread to ics? curious to know if my ics custom rom will work in safestrap still or if its a done deal

Sorry for spamming on this topic, but just tried to install this after disabling safestrap and done factory reset.
got to recovery and chose the file, it started install but then gave error
"Assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/bin/logwrapper", "aHASHCODE" ,"ANOTHER HASHCODE")
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
Status 7
Installation aborted."
EDIT: OK I have to flash it completely stock with RSDlite and clean package, just downloading it..
EDIT2: Just installing this update, clean ICS with RSDlite helped

i have not upgraded yet as i allways wait for some type of working sbf..sence this will upgrade your device to jellybean i am sure it will include new kernels

Is it possible to revert to the OEM 4.0.4 (6.16.217) firmware via the existing SBF?
Just curious, I haven't made the jump to JB yet.

Like rruleford said the only way to totally wipe/flash the entire phone would be to wait for the xml fastboot files. What you COULD try is placing the JB OTA update on your external sd card, then booting into stock recovery, wiping data and cache, and then re-flashing the update manually. It should be able to flash over top of itself just fine. Not sure if it would fix anything but might be worth a shot.

ok thanks you all, i guess i can wait for the fastboot files then.. it hasnt rebooted on me all day so far. might have been a glitch with apps i installed that no longer work well on jb as they did on ics

aah dang sussed it. seems u can now reboot the fone by holding power button for 3-4 seconds. mine gets stuck once in a while so thats what i think was causing the reboots. any chance there's a way to turn that off?

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)

And everyone who uses it should donate to djrbliss and prove that the Android community can support such a valuable asset!

Yes you must be on the Jellybean leak, rooted, with Safestrap 3.0 installed.
Well I rebooted without wiping data or cache and now my phone won't boot.
Cannot enter SS3 either..
So this is a must, not a suggestion.

Well you can go to leaked Jellybean for AT&T if you are boot loader unlocked... You flash system and boot.IMG from ATT 77.12.22 then boot to stock recovery and install the jellybean leak after the normal root procedure ( root, ota root keeper, etc) see the threads for those Also might need to wipe data when flashing att files or boot loop.

Attention read before flashing official ota!!

keep in mind before anyone updates to the official jb. i suspect the official release will be patched to not allow us to return to ics. if you keep root after the update good but if you some how break root there might no be a way to get it back as of now! so be cautious before you accept update. we should at least wait for an official jb fxz if you plan on keepng root this way if you mess something up at least you will have a working phone back without root of course. again i dont know they will patch the official release to prevent downgrade but lets find out for sure to be on the safe side. i dont think were gonna get dan to make us a jb root method right away soon.....
It could be considering its small size. Those who have updated to JB OTA should install safestrap and make a backup.

That's not the official one... A leak update for a leak update is not the official OTA. The official package (if for some reason it is 98.4.20) will be the size of at least the 2 leak update.zips together. It is not a 10 MB change from ICS to JB. It's a 10 MB change from JB leak to JB leak.

Just to clarify for Pete.
We don't want your information stored on your phone.
1) Restore back to ICS using the "restore function" in SS3/TWRP
2) Do a Factory Data Reset in settings.... privacy..... Factory Data Reset (this will wipe all personal info from the phone).
3) After you've done a Factory Data Reset, do a backup in SS3/TWRP.
4) Zip up the folder that has the backup you just performed, and upload it to a file server somewhere.
5) Post the link in this thread.

[Root]Root your XT925/XT926 running Jelly Bean

[INSERT TYPICAL DISCLAIMER] I will not, can not, and shall not be held responsible for acts of durr. These instructions are fairly easy to follow and involve a little bit of android adb knowledge and a few fastboot commands. If you can not grasp them in about 30s reading, please, pay someone to perform this task for you and do NOT risk bricking your phone. Your warranty is now void, and all damage can, and may, be permanent. Thank you.
So, after fiddling around with trying to get the downgrade to ICS working, then rooting, then saving it up to JB, I said screw it and tried the method used on samsungs and it works. Lovely.
EASY TOO!
All you need, is...
1) Unlocked bootloader. If you don't have this, and aren't willing to have this, leave now.
2a) epinter's CWM recovery -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973904
2b) CWM / TWRP for the XT926 developer edition
3) Chainfire's SuperSU (Donate to this guy, he does a **** ton for the android community! ) -- http://download.chainfire.eu/298/SuperSU/
The process is SIMPLE.
Follow epinter's fastboot directions for installing cwm on your XT925 or the instructions for CWM/TWRP for the xt926 (Haven't tested, only have a 925) and from there, install the SuperSU package from your SD Card. Reboot, test, done.
As of time of writing, the current and 100% functional version of SuperSU is v0.99, I can not guarantee earlier version will work, however I assume that later ones will.
Thanks works great.

Xt926 cannot be unlocked unless you have the developer edition. Also there is a CWM and TWRP recovery for us (xt926 developer) so I would fast boot flash that instead of the one for XT925. Otherwise, awesome thread.

I see using a utility 1.0 method, another where u go back to ics and root but I don't want a brick so please help clarify. Thank u

This is the only available method for the xt926 on Verizon. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33610625
You won't brick your phone.

Let me clarify
The root package will work on ANY phone running jelly bean.
The trick is getting CWM/TWRP/Any insecure recovery installed first.
If you can flash .zip's you can install this root method.
I've updated the post since the xt926 is different, and I was tired and lazy before.

I understood you clearly. Just helping to explain that the only root method for the XT926 non dev is the link I posted. Your method will absolutely work for any bootloader unlocked phone.

Right. There is no root for jellybean on the non dev. The utility returns you to ICS then you root and protect root through the OTA.

So, just to clarify what these steps actually do (I like to understand the reasons why things have to be done to make them work);
1) Bootloader unlocked: This allows you to install the Clockwork Mod
2a & b) Install Clockwork Mod: This installs an appropriate Clockwork Mod image file that epinter has created for this model phone. We then use the AP Fastboot option when rebooting (by holding down that horrific combo of volume and power buttons) to fire this up.
3) Because we're now using a slightly modified...ermm...image?...whatever, it lets us run the SuperSU package directly from our SD card, allowing it to get its' initial root access and we then use the SuperSU app to grant superuser rights as we fire up each app as per a normal root.
Sound right, or have I totally misunderstood things? I'd love to go ahead and do this (I'm in Australia with a XT925, so although I've not yet unlocked it, I can), but I use my phone for work, so I can't really screw it up. I did have root on ICS and loved it, but unfortunately, I didn't know you had to protect root before accepting the JB OTA update, so I lost it then (but still have things like Superuser installed).

Ok I got that. XT926 here. But all the directions I'm reading say that you need root to install CWM, because you need to rename a system file. So if I'm trying to get root through these steps, which requires root to install CWM...??? What am I missing...
I tried installing TWRP, but I get the same screen as CWM when trying to get into recovery (open android with ! symbol)
With twrp you don't need to rename anything. I have it installed. Fastboot flash it, press volume down + power for 10 seconds to simulate a battery pull, then quickly before it reboot press the Volume up + volume down + power combo to pull up the menu, then enter recovery. The trick is to not let it reboot after flashing twrp the first time. Once in twrp make a backup and it will overwrite the stock recovery. (This is all for the dev edition XT926.)

Alright, thanks! I got it now with TWRP. Looks like I kept missing that crucial "prevent bootup" step.
I am curious though, how this would work for someone (with the dev edition) who wants to keep CWM since it does not auto-rename the stock recovery? If I'm not mistaken the process would go like this:
1) fastboot flash CWM
2) reboot into CWM before phone boots up
3) use CWM to flash SU package, obtaining root
4) boot up phone, which causes CWM to be overwritten
5) now with working root, rename stock recovery using file explorer app
6) repeat step 1, and boot up phone keeping CWM since the stock is renamed
Wow that was simple.....many thanks man

Ok I updated to JB, but lost root - so I've tried to flash back to ICS and now get this ****:

Any solution? I gather that others are stuck like this too.

My mistake - that is what I'm really trying to do - FXZ to ICS.
I don't think it's possible to fxz and downgrade the Android version. I got a similar error when I tried to fxz and accidentally chose the old 5.9.905 zip file.

It's been discussed at length that you can't flash back to ICS because of securities. Likely brick risk.

Well this sucks - there is no way around this problem? I guess perhaps a JB FXZ might do it when it becomes avail.
If it makes you feel better I blew it too. Didn't even think twice as I was doing it. I'm better than that too. I'll be patiently waiting for the FXZ...

You will brick. The security doesn't allow any of the secure partitions to be downgraded. Not just cdt.

no... it won't boot,
but, it will let the bionic boot into recovery mode (manually), then you can install the OTA update
tada...

How did you solve this?
What firmware should i use? i dont what is FXZ
can you please help
i am using razr xt912 and fails on flash 1/24 cdt.bin
what should i do?
You are in a bionic thread instead of xt912 one. If you look through the threads for your device, you should be able to find what you need. Good luck!
