[Q] TW Launcher Error - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, all!
I have been a lurker for a while now and y'all have been a BIG help (I am actually comfortable flashing ROMs- and I am learning the lingo - see?)
Now it’s my turn to post. I am helping a friend with her Samsung Captivate - AT&T. something happened last night (it had to have updated, because she doesn't really download anything. also - her battery started draining very quick last night. She had to turn it off for other reasons too.) And now get the "Sorry! The application TwLauncher (process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close" it is in loop mode, I cannot get anywhere after unlocking the screen. The status bar doesn't work, neither do the buttons. So I can’t even get to settings. I/we are not so worried about the phone itself, but she has some holiday pictures of her brother who recently passed away on it, and didn't have an SD card in it. So, this is really my last hope.
Now you are probably saying "well, why don't you look at other threads." I did! And came up with some options on my own as well. Below is a list of what I have thought of, have found, tried and have some questions on. Please let me know if you have any other options or info, as I am her last hope. The store and repair shops are not very helpful.
I can’t tell you for sure what she is running, but it should be current stock, no mods at all.
bat pull - DONE, no change
sim card pull - DONE, no change
force DL a new launcher from PC. - DONE, can’t get it to download. It says she never downloaded anything to the phone from the mobile market. (I think this may have something to do with not have 4g and Wi-Fi not on. from what I have read)
Built in recovery mode cache wipe - DONE, no change
I installed Samsung kies, tried to plug the phone into the computer, but the PC won’t recognize the phone. I think it is in charge only mode, but I can’t access the option to change it.
P.S. debugging mode is ON.
Okay, so now what I found on here - these lead to my questions as well.
If I "wipe user data" will this wipe pictures, videos, etc. as well? I do NOT care about apps.
I found the below threads and have questions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795638
Post # 2 - can I do this from the recovery screen? And will is keep the data (pictures)? I don’t care about contacts, messages, etc.
Post # 3 - cans I re flash the ROM from the SD card? (Again - NOT rooted)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417244
Found and tried everything - it don' work Lucy.
I think this is all for the moment. I appreciate any and ALL help. She is to the point of tears about those pictures and I really want to bring her some good news.
edit: another try: press and hold search key for voice. - DONE. i get a connection error for voice. or an "app has stopped unexpectedly"

I would suggest doing wipe user data option. It shouldn't touch anything stored on your internal SD as you've already read elsewhere but there's always the possibility that things can go wrong. If you aren't worried about apps, text messages, and all that stuff I would also suggest looking at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3 If you go that route I suggest the Odin KK4 with bootloaders as your one click option. Going the one-click route will start you over with a completely stock phone as far as the ROM goes but again shouldn't touch the internal SD.

whoa, dude. a lot of questions at once.
what rom was the phone running before you started?
you say it got updated but at&t doesn't do ota updates on cappy. they direct you to use minikies update packs, not kies. from samsung direct to pc, not ota.

Have u tried to use ADB to get the pics, etc. off the phone and copied to the pc ?

no - please give me more info? i will try anything!

As for using adb to pull the pics, etc. off of the phone...it would be easier/quicker for u to do the search on xda and videos on youtube, as opposed to me tryin to explain it all.

I'm glad that worked out for you and her. I would suggest making a backup of the photos and then look into moving up to some more recent roms that are posted here on XDA. They will make her enjoy her phone again and she won't have to deal with Touchwiz anymore lol

So I turned off my phone and restarted it again and when I slide down the lock screen I get all these pop ups of;The process android.process____ has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. I get that from like phone, Google Maps and all that. My phone doesn't even connect to the network. Anyway to make it work without having to delete all my stuff:/

Oh sorry my bad. No I haven't done anything to my phone. No rooting whatsoever and all apps have been downloaded from the app market.
that is a interesting one. first open would be to hard boot it pull the battery for a minute or so and then try it. only other option i could think of off the top my of head is to do a RUU installation going back to bone stock... do not have the link handy but it's available around XDA somewhere.

Wouldn't hard boot delete all my stuff?
Edit-
Nevermind. After turning it off and on many times I finally heard my phone receive a text message so I knew it was working again. :]]] It's so weird that it just came back, I'm glad though. =]

Kyocera Zio M6000 - Android 2.2!!! cricket

EDIT: We now have our own forum section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1060
Please check there to see if there's a relevant thread for any new topics or issues, if not, make one.
---
Well, that last thread went on FOREVER, I thought a new one might be needed.
This is the continuation from the old thread.
The 2.2 upgrade is here with instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11551718&postcount=1067
Important note: The update will officially be OTA, so you don't need to do this yourself manually here. The OTA will be out shortly. The method provided at that link is for the technically inclined.
If it gets stuck on 98% for a while, that's fine, don't worry about it. Just keep it connected and wait, it can take 30min. Not a problem.
And if you lost your Kyocera logo while messing with the boot image, IT'S BACK
I'm really hoping they fixed the boot loader and perhaps we can get Clockwork Mod working on it again, without it trying to connect to Verizon!
ROOTING
The 1-click root that worked for 1.6 works just the same for 2.2
ISSUES
There doesn't seem to be any multi-touch enabled.
Either the accelerometer or compass is broken, both google sky maps and the compass app jitter around A LOT.
Improvements
All around speed increase.
Camera takes pictures in focus and captures when pressing the button rather than 1+ seconds later.
Night pictures have much better contrast.
Gallery scans 8gb card a single time and opens fast all times after.
hehe, I was going to start a thread, but thought it fitting to wait for you to do it.
Perhaps we should muscle xda again for a ZIO section, or at least a cricket android section? o.0
That's why I was asking people to start new threads starting with "Kyocera Zio M6000 - my issue here" so hopefully the general forum would be flooded... That didn't seem to go too well, there are over 1000 posts in the original thread. Can we beat that here?
lol hopefully not. Now that 2.2 is live (somewhat) I think people will now be more inclined to start new zio threads instead of bombarding the most popular one.
I love this update it made the phone everything it should have been from the start. All the great performance enhancements and cool new features are awesome, I cant stop playing with my phone. I think my new favorite thing is the new lock screen, and the slide to answer feature.
any clue what the "kyocerafailsafetool" is? Its a background app.
Unrelated note: Im going to have to get use to the fact that I dont have to push my task killer widget everytime I open/close an app. lol
apps 2 sd
hi i am looking for instructions to do the apps2sd can anyone point me in the direction for that? also i noticed that all the bloatware is back, is it still safe to remove it same as before? and i guess we still need barnacle to have wifi hotspot. thanks!!! so we dont need taskkiller anymore for 2.2?
apps2sd is located in your application management settings -- just click an app and there will be an option (if available) to "Move to SD"
Should be alright to remove all the crappy demo games and bloatware.
Yes for barnacle.
Sweet. I have been at work all day and just got to a PC that I can do the update from. Got it smoothly on the first try although it does take forever on the initial boot up after update.
Anybody remember the directory that the bloatware is in?

anyone find a way to upgrade to the 2.2 for Zio cricket yet? I just now found out that they finally got it out. I was told though that the only way to get it is to take my phone to a Corp store and they have to do it.
I've been searching all over the net for an hour now trying to find it to do myself but with no avail. it's getting very tiring and frustrating cause i don't have a ride to get to the dam store I need to get to for them to do it.
Woohoo !! I got my Kyocera logo back. Took forever at 98%, glad I waited, I'm rolling. I did a factory reset right before the update, but I think it would have wiped everything anyway.

I know, I was super stoked to get my logo back. Perhaps they've changed the way the OS handles factory resets - perhaps not on the recovery partition anymore?

dam download of the upgrade taking forever on my junk network
Its taking me some time to get the download I need, but in the mean time, can someone explain in detail how I should go about doing it?
I'm worried someone might try calling or txting me while its being done. Hope that won't screw things up. I'm still going to try it either way.
Before I start I'm going to do a system restore on my phone first then go ahead with the upgrade from there. Only problem I'm really having is it's in a WinRaR zip file. Do i have to extract the files in the zip first before upgrading, transfer it to the sd card on my phone and go from there? what I have no clue yet but looking for the answers. problem is I only have till 7:00pm tonight to get it done cause i have to be somewhere at 7:30pm till 9pm.
I would like to have it done before i leave if possible.
apps to sd
ok thank you Spz0 i have got a new 8gb sd card that was the biggest i could find on such short notice, so just format it with the phone and then replace all the files off old sd card to new one ? was just making sure so i dont mess it up. what are some good apps for 2.2 that wouldnt work on 1.6 i have phone rooted with universal androot installed apps are titanium backup, root explorer, quick app cache cleaner, better keyboard, adw ex launcher, andguard, astro file browser, beautiful widgets, dropbox, memory up pro. i have found a place to get apps and install from sd card for anyone that wants to try the apps and make sure they work or are what you want before purchasing them and installing them, just go here http://www.4shared.com/ and use search for apps for android apps you want to try. i then get them from market and pay for them if they work and are what i want. saves me from getting something that doesnt work, and then trying to get a refund from market. ok hope this helps everyone. tommy

[Q] Completely dead screen on an SGH-I896 - Any way to retrieve data?

A friend of my brother's had a Captivate and it's screen is completely dead. Cracked and broken physically, and won't display anything. I know the phone still kinda works since there is a row of pixels at the top that kinda lights up when the power button is pushed. The lights seem to correspond to a normal boot up and screen on/off functionality.
I am not versed in this particular phone, is there any way for me to get the data off of it? The guy who used it can't remember the google account info (...yes I know...) so he's come to me, the resident techie, to try and get the data off of it.
Is it possible? It's unrooted, stock, basically untouched from what I know. So we're dealing with something that has zero root access.
Do you guys think it's still possible to get it into fastboot mode and get something off of it? Maybe using ODIN?
Well, I am guessing that it is impossible to activate USB mass storage given the condition of the screen. The best way would be to odin a kernel that has CWM, and blindly navigate through the menus in order to mount USB storage. I have seen this done before; it's easy if you know how many times to press the buttons. I suppose I could help with that if you can't find another reference.
Or you could use ADB but that relies on USB debugging being enabled, which isn't likely if the person was an average user.
BTW, I'm jealous of your current devices...

You can ODIN a kernel with CWM on an unrooted device? I did not know that! Could you kindly point me in the direction of some sort of ODIN how-to? I'm not versed in the Samsung proprietary stuff. I should also add that it's not just the "USB Storage" that needs to be retrieved, things like contacts and stuff too if possible. I tried explaining that the Google account would have the stuff synced, but that's where the "I dunno the login" comes in. -sigh-
USB Debugging is not enabled as far as I know this is purely a stock device. Nothing changed other than basic usage settings.
I'm a bit of a Nexus junkie...my husband gets my older stuff...so he's kind of up to date (only out by a year or so), and I get the fancy really new stuff lol.

Yep, rooting only affects things at the OS level, while download mode has access to everything right out of the box. Do you happen to know which stock version the phone was running? That will affect which kernel I suggest.
As far as the contacts go... I suppose we can do a nandroid backup of the device from recovery, and to get the other stuff out, I figure you'd have to restore it to a different device and deal with it from there.

No idea what version it was running prior to crash, and I don't have another Captivate to restore a nandroid to, so I'm not sure how well this is going to work...
I'm kinda leaning towards the..."nope you borked it" answer.

Okay, well in that case you should probably just try a froyo kernel because we don't know if you have gingerbread bootloaders or not.
And I'm pretty sure you can extract that kind of stuff from a nandroid using titanium backup.

I plugged the phone into my PC to charge, and it's not making the chime...I know it won't pop up as a storage location, but shouldn't the PC still chime to indicate that it sees the device? Also, something appears to have caused it to cease powering up like before. The lights on the buttons don't come on anymore, and the power button no longer seems to elicit the normal pixel line at the top showing power...I think it just finished dying.
I don't think it's going to work for us.
Thanks anyway though!
remote screen: if you can figure how to install myphoneexplorer client on your cappy and then install the myphoneexplorer on you pc, it has a driver to remote the cappy screen via usb into a window on the pc. you can use the mouse to do anything you would do with your finger on the cappy screen.
search 'my phone explorer' via google play. the developer of the app may have a way for you to get it on the cappy via usb.

You just need to format your internal sd card and all should be fine, it's a fairly common issue

actually I had left it alone for an hour or so and it seems to have come back to life again..
although it has lost my security settings and all the haptic feedback has turned itself back on again
lost my swiftkey settings also it seems
piece of shizzle
EDIT: in fact it refuses to keep any security settings at all, no lock screen nothing.
lost all my texts everything, f*cking cr*p
walkman isnt working either
wondering why i bothered upgrading cant actually see any difference really other than a more colorful boot image. hoping that the battery life will improve as that is rubbish - I know it takes a while to settle.

No No No don't format anything. That would make you loose all data and apps. Let it be. It will fix itself. Could take between 5 minutes and 3 hours. It is not an error or a problem or anything. Its just getting ready.
But if you really really need it to boot, yes you can format internal.

I don't know why it screwed up your settings buddy maybe due to a small flashing error. Flash again and you will see the difference in the upgrade. Battery life is amazing. I can get two days if i switch off data, and 1.5 days with data always on. Plus multitasking is smoother and the camera has HDR, the Xperia Z's ClearAudio+ engine, notification toggles, a sexy new Album, blah blah. You'll find out.
Oh and you did the right thing by letting it be with the white triangle sign.

its an Xperia T I have in case that wasn't clear...
so I installed it from a zip in the end, rather than an ftf as flashtool was playing sillybuggers.
I should just go in to recovery and do so again? presumably along with the JB GApps
like I say it was working fine after the first time I did that, but when I turned it off this morning it went all manky
I would however like to keep some of my settings for the apps that havent already had their settings raped.. is titanium the best way to do that? or to move things to SD card and reinstall or something
also home button not functioning- at all
the no screen lock is a big issue as I have my work emails on there - if I lost my phone I would really get in trouble

No No No don't format anything. That would make you loose all data and apps. Let it be. It will fix itself. Could take between 5 minutes and 3 hours. It is not an error or a problem or anything. Its just getting ready.
But if you really really need it to boot, yes you can format internal.

Most the app stuff is on /data not /sdcard so you'll be fine, some of the data made by apps will be in /sdcard/android but there isn't much there as most is in /data/data so if you backup /sdcard/android you'll be fine, you may as well backup your whole sdcard and format, that's the solution I used and most people have been using. If in doubt use titanium backup to also backup your apps if you're unsure

I believe the best way is to use a ftf file with flashtool. I have not tried any zipped roms. They might be faulty. And Titanium Backup is the app to use to backup apps. Moving things to SD card is useless as they will be removed when you install a new rom. Always make sure you do a full wipe when you flash a new rom, and flash the kernel before flashing the rom.

clearly it is not progressing as it been like that for over an hour now
also tried clearing cahce/dalvik to no avail

Installing new ROM - some help/advices

I've never done this before (did it a few times with old omnia i900 and WP6.5, never android) so I need as much help and advice you can give me
I know I need Odin, Kies, a rom and a kernel(??) and drivers. Found all the links from the video /watch?v=bd1zwH2-kX0
If there's a video on youtube showing everything that has good quality you can just redirect me there.
Anyways, my mom uses this phone so I need it to have as much battery life and ease of access possible so which ROMs do you recommend?
I also need to know what I need to have to flash the phone (USB cable and something else software wise, maybe) and what are the risks of flashing it. The reason I'm flashing it is because it feels slow for some reason and it keeps vibrating all the time. Does it need an sdcard because I don't have one.
Sorry if I violated some rules posting this. Thanks.
strange to see you struggle with the same phone as i am the same day on an old phone like this, im trying to get google play to work on it, but it seems the custom backup installed rom is just messed up, google play just give blank screens or some weird errors, the internet and other things work, but https also messed up on some pages, and the date is set correctly =/ which is what usually is wrong on my pc when https is messed up
so im also looking for advice on a custom rom, the lighter its on resources the better, is it also possible to use ROEHSOFT_RAM_Expander on this phone? is the kernel limit of swap ram a software thing or a hardware think?

Yes. I also have same problems, white screen for play store or errors saying it crashed or no connection. I think a different ROM would solve all these problems. You can try Cyanogenmod.

yes tried the one on http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...samsung-galaxy-pocket-gt-s5300-t3033992/page3 and messed up phone boot, the steps are not very clear on that link, will try whatever i can today, else hammer the phone and buy the kid a new one, not going to be stingy with the kid or waste a lot of time on the phone, but i was trying to ditch the throw away economy, and forcing the kid to buy his own phone that way he appreciates what he have a lot more.
Edit:
flashed back sucessfully with oddin and this post files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560314
will fight the trow away economy later today.

I like fixing and troubleshooting stuff more. But only if it's mine and I don't have much to lose. You might've missed to root the phone.

it was rooted i think i used this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365697, and Superuser app was installed after that process so it seems it was rooted, i used airdroid screen cap function to test because that one ask superuser permission and it worked after the root
I got whatsapp and airdoid working without google play but really want google play to work, did you try Cyanogenmod or are you scared to mess up the phone?

I haven't tried anything today. My mom just got the phone today so I don't really want to brick/mess something up.
I tried only installing few apps like Facebook, Opera, Chrome, FB Messenger and Viber. Some worked right away, for some I had to download different apks because play store doesn't work. I haven't even tried rooting it. It could be rooted using kingoroot, I might try it.
I noticed that play store works only when you want to update an app. It didn't crash when it redirected me to YT app and FB app update.

i installed kitkat4.4 from this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYI91-S8Tk
google play worked until it updated then the blanck screen stuff started to happen all over again, but at least the kitkat version does not eat up all the internal storage like the rom i had from stock, so it only uses 20% vs 80% 90% so for that reason ill keep it until i see a better alternative on the forum, may play with it again but out of time.

Did you do everything like from the video or did you do something that is usual thing to do before flashing that a noob like me would miss?
Have you tried flashing it again but this time without updating the app?
Also did you use sdcard for this or via usb on PC?
this is the way to go for me, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2698533 this one works wonderfully
it has chrome and flash working, it also works as smooth as silk vs the stock or the kitkat 4.4 roms, so don't waste your time and trying to get the other ones working.
let me know how it goes.
Edit: replaced old post to avoid more headaches old post in quotes
1- ! meesed up the phone the first time then i fixed it with oddin and the files here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2560314
2-then installed using the youtube video as a guide, i didn't do as the description said but rather did exactly what i saw in the video, the guy dees a bad jobin the description, he mentions step (5 - Select the vM00CWMv3f) but in the video he never touches it, so dont search for it or download it just ignore that step or do exacly as the video, use J K L to play pause advance or back the video and make sure you mirror him xD
if you do the odding thing your phone will be like the default mode, unrooted and so but no need to root it to install the rom of the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYI91-S8Tk
PD : google play is still a messy mess with its blank screen with the kitkat version of the video , i uninstall/downgrade google_play_services and the google_play_store, then i open google play and accept the termns and install my intended app with the old google store, then google updates an installs its bugged app all over again without me wanting, then i go uninstall or downgrade the two apps all over again and install my next app with the old google play, its morroning all afternoon already ^_^
wasn't technology supposed to make life easier?
so where did you get stuck? no one of the experts will recommend a rom? T_T
PD2: did not use an external sdcard, only the internal, and i used the usb cable with the oddin program, then after the odding ting, i did use the cable to upload files to the root, then i did what the video shows without cables or rooting
ive send a pm with my whatsapp and skype hit me there if you still strugle, im online 4 t o5 more hours

Why is the notification bar no the bottom on the CM7 one you sent?
Thanks for helping me out. I might try today flashing it but still without sdcard.
BTW if you try flashing it again you might try recording it with an HD camera to see the full process on how to do it. I could also edit it and add annotations and you could post it to youtube if you want. If you do that please make sure it's bright enough in the room

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074054 (for this one let it restart after install and let it boot to the system, then shut it down after you selected language and entered home screen, then boot recovery again and install the update file)
if you don't have stock rom or if the installation goes bad, or the installed rom does not work properly, then Restore Stock ROM/Unbrick, and then try again, i found that doing this step before trying a new rom is the best, else wifi or other tings fail. here is the Restore Stock ROM/Unbrick thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560314
just show your mom this forum thread before you try anything with her device, remember i was ok with hammering my device, so i didn't care if i killed it, but it works very nice with any of those rom, the guys that worked on those know their stuff!!, and is probably worth the effort flashing the device, also leave your sim chip in when doing the rom flashing, it seems the provider sends the configuration automatically to the device when it starts the new installed rom, if not then be prepared to search the internet for the apn settings of your cellphone company or to call them and ask.
I know the APN settings for my provider. My mom doesn't speak english so it would look like chinese for her.
Thanks for all the links. She doesn't seem to have too much problems right now. Did installing these ROMs make your vibrating to stop?

this phones vibration is dead, and it didn't get it working with any of the roms I've tried, so wont be able to answer you on that, this phones google play didn't work, not even with the stock rom, so that is why i started to flash it with the downloadable roms on this forum. Hyperion and the KitKat Smart R2 roms are really nice roms, i would say for a woman/girl use the 'KitKat Smart R2' rom and for a man/boy use the hyperion, the hyperion have a more drone electronic type theme, the phone will say with a robotic voice "ill be back" when you shut it down ^_^
lol @ hyperion.
It should say "get to the choppa"
Thanks for every advice if my mom decides the software is unbearable on the phone I will flash it.
Does play store work on hyperion/kitkat smart s2?
