Auto Memory Manager 1.0.3

Hi guys. Just wanted to plug my app here. It's based on the work that has been happening in the "auto task killer" thread.
In a nutshell this app lets you configure Android's internal memory manager to help define when to shut down different types of apps.
Features:
- Presets and custom settings
- Works with Android 1.5+
- Sliders for easy setting of the apps.

Sorry. forgot to mention that it requires root. If you are rooting then I would recommend flashing a 2.1 ROM since that's faster than the 1.5 ROMs. There are caveats of course since not everything is working perfectly on the 2.1 ROMs but it's working good enough for me. Call me shallow but I LOVE live wallpaper.

Could you perhaps give more information? I have set it to mainly 120MB (to test) and nothing is happening. Does it happen every x mins or something?

This works differently than a task killer. What you are doing is setting thresholds for each application type. So if you set the threshold for Empty Apps to be 120MB then Android will kill these apps when there is only 120MB left. This would be most of the time.
However these thresholds are soft settings. So if Android needs to start an app/service or the user manually initiates an app/service then these will still start as normal.
This is my understanding of how it works. (I am not an expert regarding this.) However I have noticed that Android is still starting up certain apps that seem to be useless and I haven't used either e.g. Amazon MP3. This could be something to do with the out-of-memory priority of the app. (will need to investigate this)
For me at least, I have found that using a task killer to kill all apps after you apply your settings works the best. But the app should keep things much tidier in terms of memory usage.
As mentioned above these are soft settings and I have tried setting all bars to 120MB and everything still works fine. You may or may not get the same experience but these are soft settings so the worst that could happen is that you have to reboot your phone and revert to the default setting.
In the next update the settings will be saved after reboot but you will still able to go into the app to change the setting anyway.

How to make your LG Optimus 2x run like a Rocket! (Requires Root)

You don’t need to change your ROM to get the best from your 2x, just a rooted stock ROM and a couple of apps that will change things dramatically. One thing I’ve noticed on the 2x is its memory management is too lenient and gets consumed quickly by background tasks etc. In no time I was down to 40-30Mb free memory and then my phone would run like a dog resulting in a reboot as the only solution.
Installing task and app killers are not the way, as they’ll only give you a short respite before the apps and background tasks you killed relaunch.
However, there is a solution.
1)Root your phone using SuperOneClick (piece of cake, instruction already on this forum)
2)Install “AutoKiller Memory Optimizer” by AndRS Studio free from the market
Optional
3) Install “Watchdog Task Manager” by Zolmut LLC (There’s a free or Paid version) I paid!
4) Install “Root App Remover” by Best of Best Android app
AutoKiller is not a task killer/manager it reconfigures Androids inbuilt memory manager to kill or suppress memory usage by applications and tasks. I now always have about 140-170MB free RAM at all times regardless of what I’m doing (but I do close my apps with the back button rather than click home)

I’ve used the ‘Extreme’ settings to ensure I have around 150MB free, and this makes a huge difference in everything I do with the phone.

Watchdog
Yeah, I know this is a task killer but Watchdog is different from other task mangers as it monitors CPU usage rather than free RAM, 3D Gallery for example is a CPU hog on my 2X, so I configured it to be killed if it consumes more than 30% CPU whilst running in the background, you’d be surprised what saps your battery!
Root App Remover
Uninstall the tosh supplied on the ROM, I removed the following, AndroidBackup (I use Titanium Backup), CarHome, F-Secure_Mobile_Security, SNS (If you’re not using the built in Facebook and Twitter app).
I also use LauncherPro with Beautiful Widgets to give my phone an almost HTC Sense look and feel and uninstalled LG Home using Root App Remover afterwards.
Hope it makes a difference for you, it did for me, vote if you like

I disagree, my phone runs way better now, maybe due to the fact that in part it’s killing more background tasks and enforcing better garbage collection. I want a phone that when I go to it, it responds immediately, I don’t want my phone to chug along whilst a new app is launched and android then decides to kill lower priority background tasks resulting in a choppy experience. These are my findings, and I wanted to share them. As a result using this particular application I now have a phone I can enjoy, rather than being frustrated by pausing, choppiness etc.
I would welcome your reasoning to why my post is useless, or explain why my phone is now running so well? Are you saying I’m suffering a placebo effect? Remember, this app is not a task killer, it reconfigures Androids internal memory management, see here:

Yes, me too. It's more responsive now. Also when I open app manager, the app list is a lot faster.I know it's more related to file read/write but still it's nice to finally able to browse with less waiting time.

Here are some screenshots, tested with AnTuTu Benchmark
The first one is v10c stock, some apps like f-secure, carapp etc frozen, second one is with using autokiller memory with preset extreme, third one is to compare, this was while using cm7.1 rc
now we'll see if autokiller works stable ^^
edit: realized that with cm7 something seemed to be wrong with the sd-card, so don't forget to compare the single-scores

I'm sure Rusty knows what he is talking about. Thing is, this talk about "the more free ram the better" has been repeated so many times, and at the end of the day, it seems to be more about user preference.
The default LG ROM seems to allow tasks to run in the background until it reaches around 50MB free RAM, then it starts to close tasks one by one. For multi-taskers like me, this is fine, I love how I can switch between facebook, tweetdeck, miren browser, google+, gmail, and messaging without seeing the apps reload.
For some, they'd want to open a task, close it, and move on to another without looking back. I guess that is where the 100MB of RAM is good for.
If you guys will be looking at benchmarks, I can guarantee that you will have higher scores with RAM optimizers. As benchmarks do not test multitasking, they simply check the performance of your phone at that point in time. (Which is also why some modders pump up their CPU freq to insane values before doing their bench then posting it.)
I have nothing against AKMO, and I find it very effective for Froyo builds. But I would recommend that each user try it out themselves. It's not a "1 fix for all" thing.

I'll just say this once: Free RAM is wasted RAM. If you feel´your phone is slow try adding some swap space

Does O2X already support swap space in EXT? (Or are your referring to VM heap?)

Doesn't play well with Fr19 at all (2 reboots in 2 minutes). Maybe I touched some settings that I shouldn't though.

Yeah, FR19 is one of the more stable ROMs out there. Try full wipe then reflash maybe.

Hi, first thanks a lot for this app, was looking for something like this a while.
My question is,
i create two accounts, as tell by the help.
One is my main OS, CM7, nightly 181, glitch 13.1
The other account i just see like four hundred kb memory used. if i reboot with this account i get a boot loop only solved by nandroid restore.
What am i doing wrong?

I don't know, its probably something to do with SD links to apps, or just sme weird crazy from the nightly. Works fine on all our cm7 and 9 builds at the office.
By the way, tried the TASK from for 10.1 - it worked fine! So your issues are probably from the mods and other crap. But while you're there, ask yourself, what kind of nutjob would want a grey framework on a tablet like this? Just ditch it for something cool like KANG or at least that Overcome!

i have jus tried on my kindle, and it works. now ill have to re root it to switch back

This is very cool! I had to pull my battery on the first restart though. My boot animation was up for over 30 minutes. Pulled the battery and it booted right into the second profile.
Unlike the above post, I did not need to reroot. I'm assuming it's just because my ROM is rooted already.
Please excuse my ignorance, I try to avoid flashing as much as possible, but how would I go about installing a different ROM onto just one profile?

Things I noticed:
-On my first swap back into my default profile, I had no vibration! No apps, ringer, notifications, or anything at all. I messed with my settings but it would not vibrate until I restarted.
-This might sound crazy, but I actually think this improved my boot speed. I am running a Droid Charge with Humble 5.0. It wasn't slow before, and maybe it's in my head, but it seems really fast! (I don't have fast swap enabled either)

You will only loose root if it was installed outside /system with a different name... since 1.0.8 the app copies the binary as well, so that should not be happening. Let me know if it still is please!

Works fine for me! Bought the pro version as this is really very handy - and cheap!

The only real issues so far have been with MIUI... almost everything else should work fine.

I enabled fast switch, and I am very impressed with it! I can switch to my second profile in about 15-20 seconds.
It works great on Droid Charge running Humble 5.0 (2.3.6)
One thing I noticed is that I need to configure my account settings on both profiles, or it messes up my normal profile. Because I am not logged in to my google account on the second, it got rid of all my contacts on the first, and had some verification issues when I tried to buy apps, and with google voice. It also changed my keyboard. None of these are huge issues, you just need to reconcile these differences between the profiles.

Does it work for all Android ?

It works for all Android versions except those with some types of folder and file links like a2sd.

[Q] Using LG Optimus 2X as a PMP need some help...

Hello all very long time lurker but am here now for some help. So a few questions and description of what i wish to achieve.
I have a POS iPod touch 4th gen that I have had 2 and half years or something and really want to replace. Also have an Xperia X10 and shortly will have an LG Optimus 2X. The X10 will function for phone duties until the Xperia TX become available in Australia.
Back the the O2X though. Now turning an android phone into a Portable Media Player (PMP) is something I have been wanting to do for a while now. Naturally though this brings up a few things that will not be needed.
For the music front end I will be using Player Pro and Pics and videos will primarily be held and viewed in QuickPic.
The phone will still need to retain wifi and bluetooth capabilities, however I want to fully disable all other forms of connectivity as I will have no need of it and will not be using a sim in the phone as this will be dedicated to music, movies and pics. So does anyone know the best way gor me to go about that?
I will also have a hell of a lot of unused and unwanted apps. I would love to be able to really strip the phone back and free up as much space as possible. Now in the past I have been able to uninstall pre-installed apps from my X10. I am just unsure how to go about it on the O2X. Does anyone know how I would go about completely removing the phone, contacts, calander, stock music, stock gallery and other assorted apps?
I would also need to be using a kernel with the voodoo sound mods for the wolfson DAC. Now I was wondering if there was any recommendations there?
Finally I would also like a recommendation of the most stable ICS based ROM to go with the voodoo kernel. I would like the ROM to also include a modifiable set of notification bar widgets so I can easily turn on and of things like wifi, bluetooth, gps, airaplane mode and adjust brightness. Anyone know of anything that would fit the bill?
Must also come with a working camera app (does not need to has video recording working or panorama just basic camera duties please). Any other suggestions that you may think of feel free to post them.

Note to mods: hope I am posting in the right section, feel free to move it if I am not.

Since connectivity is already built in into the android OS, you can't disable it, but I think keeping your phone in airplane mode all the time should do the trick. Anyway, taking out the sim card already disables all connectivity that involves telecommunications.
If you want to remove system apps, you have to root your phone first. The forum already has so many guides on rooting. Then all you have to do is use any root file manager, go into system/app and delete the apps there. Not everything can be deleted though, some are crucial for the functioning of the phone.
The other way is to download a rom, open the zip and delete everything you don't need that's under system/app and install it. No guarantees that your phone will boot up though, if you happen to hit an app that is crucial for the rom to work. Then you can flash the rom and it's done.
There are many kernels that use voodoo, just find one that fits any rom of your choice.
Finally: ICS roms still have some bugs, seeing that you are going to use it as a PMP, I recommend not upgrading to ICS or later until roms made from LG's sources start popping out. I hear that CM10 (that runs on jellybean) will be released shortly after LG releases their ICS update.
Almost all roms have a camera app, no worries there!
TL;DR Install any rom you'd like that seems to fit the bill. Root your phone, open the particular rom's zip file and remove apps you don't need that are in system/app, flash it to your phone (with recovery mode of course). Flash kernel to your liking.

Looks like LG is no better than Sony when it comes to OS Updates haha
shall look at stock based Rome for now then. Try and find a JB skinned one if possible.
Then play trial and error with what apps I can remove before flashing and which I have to leave and possibly just freeze. New it was something simple but its been a while. I hope I can remove all the basic apps that make it function like a phone otherwise I guess I will make do with freezing and hiding them. Love removing all clutter possible.
Will be waiting to see if CM10 can come along much less buggy than all the CM9 and ICS ROMs that I have looked at. Silly LG hampering the development of ROMs because there isn't an official ICS update to work off and its late 2012 already. Hoping for some good news though with what I have read about SK and them getting ICS.

This may be old ground, but hopefully not as I have tried a search on this forum, and there may be an obvious answer but I didn't want to fiddle around and wreck my phone lol
I have a third party app manager app installed on stock 4.2.1 ROM, not because there is anything wrong with the original task manager per se but because I find this one quicker and easier if an app hangs up or I want to close it manually for example; I totally get the whole thing about task killers etc, also the task manager app I installed also gives me a pretty handy overview of CPU clock etc I have rooted the phone and use No Frills CPU to throttle the clock speed back when I am not actually using the phone and hopefully stretch the battery life out a little.
So, in a nut shell; can I freeze the default Task Manager and just use the one I installed without there being any problems? I don't know enough about how android works and exactly what the default Task Manager does to decide if it absolutely has to be there for the phone to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and just slap me with a wet fish if my questions are stupid

I was a bit intrested in memory cleaners/task killers but as much as I know know now Android has built-in memory mechanisms/algorithms which are managing ram to get the best results. If you use any external app you're just slowing down your phone. There is ony one app which can help you a bit to get more hours in standby - greenify, it suspends selected apps on background so it won't use cpu or wifi. When you run them, they run as usual, just not at background after close (do not use it on messangers, you won't get messages after greenifying it).
Next thing - no frills cpu - yes, this can help a bit too, for example there are some battery saving governors or you can underclock cpu (I haven't had lags on 1300 Mhz)
Also I get more hours on battery from custom roms - KitKat came with big improvements here. You can always go back if you don't like it, just do a backup in recovery.
