Rattling / ticking noise from back of HTC One - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else encountered a rattling and/or ticking noise when they place their HTC One onto a firm surface (e.g. wooden table)?
It's quite easy to recreate by tapping the back of the phone - on the top half, near the camera - with your knuckle.
Possible causes: autofocus module, OIS, sim tray
I'd be very grateful to find out if anyone else has experienced the same, as I'm trying to work out whether it's just my phone or if it's normal!
Thank you!

It's the camera module as always, like u said autofocus module and there is a mechanical gyroscope element in the camera, your device is normal
Don't OCD

Yep, same problem here

I have the same rattle coming from the camera lens area. Easy to hear if you tap the top back edge of the phone. Seriously rattles hard when the phone vibrates, which if it is the focus I imagine can't be good for it. It also makes it sound a bit cheap with the rattle on vibrate as it's easily noticeable.
I was tossing and turning whether I should exchange it after setting the phone up for 2 days but looking around forums it seems like a common problem not limited to the HTC One. Great phone otherwise.

Mine does the same. Its the only issue I have with this phone, otherwise its an amazing phone. I have two friends in work with the same phone so I'm going ot see if they have the same issue too. Seems its on all of them so far so I wont do anything about it until I hear of a repair down the line.

Does your N4 rattle?

In reference to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989561
A user reported that 5 out of 5 phones had a rattling problem.
When moving the phone suddenly or shaking the phone it does rattle. I took it back to O2 and they all the Nexus 4's they had in stock did it. It's loud enough to be noticeable, but not so loud i wanted my money back. The stores explanation was the accelerometer. I'm sure others will shed more light on this in time.

Thank you.
I'm thinking its a faulty o2 batch because no reviews mentioned this :/

The One X sucks though, this is not supposed to. When I had the GS2, iphone 4s, Xperia S, and GS3 they never rattled. Besides the Xperia S yellow screen problem, the two One X I had were the only lemons.
My Nexus One rattled. Apparently it was part of the camera that made the noise.
IMO It depends on the type of rattle. The camera can rattle some and the accelorometer can rattle. Both should have the sound come from the same place and both should be the sound of something moving just a tiny bit. Both should not make a sound just turning the phone but shaking the phone can cause them to rattle.
the accelerometer cannot rattle. it is a chip and has no movin parts. the vibra motor can rattle or other parts that have nop firm fit in the phone. but mostly is vibra motor:good:
iphone 5 ratlles too. apparently it is something to do with the camera focus mech
It's the autofocus in the camera. People always say this and its a non issue.

Come on... its because of the camera and its normal. The One X had it too! Stop inspecting the phone for minor flaws! Who shakes the phone near their ear so that the phone rattles? So annoying!

For the record, mine doesn't rattle at all. Tried in a silent room with no other sources in case I was being deaf.
8Gb from Play Store bought in the UK
It does rattle a little if I take my phone to my ear and shake it violently. Which incidentally enough, is a ritual I do before every phone call. I'm seriously returning my phone over this.

This is normal. Jeez some of you are so childish. It's probably the camera. Acting as if you would hear it if you use it normally. Get a grip really
To be honest I don't make a habit of shaking my phone all day long.

[Q] weird sound!!! something loose inside my phone?

Hi guys!
I just got my HTC one about a month ago, recently I found that there's a weird vibrate sound every time I put my phone on a hard surface "gently". It sounds like there's something loose inside the phone. So I tried tapping the upper part of the back plate on my palm and I heard that sound every time I did it. But when I tried it with the bottom part of the back plate, it just sounded like a solid piece of metal. I always baby my phones, this phone has never been dropped, smacked or anything. The weird thing is that I asked my friend who has an HTC one to test it and he told me his had that weird sound too. I'm just wondering if this is normal? Or it's just me and my friend are so unlucky. The sound really makes my phone like a piece of junk that's gonna fall apart soon. Could some HTC one owners try what I did and see if yous have the same issue please?
I'm gonna contact my carrier Rogers tomorrow but I have a really bad feeling about this. I don't wanna have my phone sent for repair because it's only 1 month old and I don't want a refurbished one either. God, tomorrow is the 30th day since I got this phone. I guess I better do something soon. Has anyone had any return/exchange/repair phone experience with Rogers?
sorry about my poor English cuz it's not my first language.
thank you so much guys!!
Mine clicks a little too. Probably just the flash touching the housing or something similar. Wouldn't worry about it as long as everything works.

Yup. Since the phone has optical image stabilizer, it will surely have movable parts in the camera module, this is normal. Same is true for Canon lenses with IS.

Nexus 5 problems

I just wanted to let you guys know my situation.
I have had problems with the build quality! I got my phone from Carphone Warehouse (UK) on Friday, I noticed a dead pixel and that the vibration was really loud (sounded cheap) so I took it back, the 2nd one I got the power button rattled like mad, I swapped it again and the same thing is happening with the power button. I am sick of it now and although the software is superb I cannot deal with the build quality. I'm now on the hunt for a different phone.
Cool story bro if your letting a freaking button keep u from keeping a phone then idk what to tell u
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
My power button makes a little noise too...but only when I shake the phone. Which really isn't a problem for me.

Sorry to hear man. While I'm sure your not the only person that will have this issue, I'm equally certain most will be just fine.

I can imagine it being annoying but lets not forget the iPhone 5s has many reports of loose/rattly power buttons too and they cost double of what the Nexus 5 costs.
Not making excuses for LG/Google but even Apple isn't immune to this.
Recently I even saw an article about the Note 3 having a loose or crooked home button. In all reality nothing is perfect, there is a margin of error allowed for every phone that comes off of the line that's just how it goes.
I don't think the build quality is the best, it feels quite cheap and feels as if it could break easily. The Gorilla Glass 3 feels amazing to touch though!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
And that's why I wait for the problems to iron themselves out before I order a new phone.
power button is fine on mine however the volume button edges are razor sharp and seem quite rough.
Anyone else have this?
nexus 4 first releases had issues with the buzz noise in the ear piece. risks of being a pioneer user for the phone? At least you can freely get it replaced for now. after I RMA'd, I received one with perfect build quality. Keep trying!
Must be lucky then, no dead pixels here and any noticeable backlight bleed and the buttons are fine apart from being slighly rough on the sides. Cant fault the build quality here and I would say you're simply unlucky, 1 dead pixel is nothing in a display and for just a simple thing as the button rattling when you shake it... who shakes their phones? This reminds me of the silly thread in the N4 section where the autofocus for the camera caused a rattle when you shook the phone yet alot of people went OCD on it and were livid on such a small issue.
First part with the dead pixel I believe is fair but you replaced it and got one that didnt have a dead pixel so BQ doesnt sound like an issue...

Yep my note 3 home button was loose...but thats an $850 device i expect better than that. The nexus is dirt cheap so no biggie if something like that happens...

Just out of curiosity has anyone elses buttons rattle when you shake the phone. Im only asking as a point of reference. I know many will say it theirs doesn't but lets be honest Iv heard it a million times then I go to a store and try a a few and find they all do to some extent. It would be great to hear from those that have the phone and honestly,
hey if it rattles it rattles it will just be the way its made that results in a rattle. I would think it strange though that LG would put so much effort into making ceramic buttons for durability and longevity then not fit them properly on production.
so I would suggest this is probably normal although i never tried shaking the phones I had hands on today though,
The ones I had hands on did have a sharp edge to the buttons. Didn't bother me though its simply the type of material they are made from. Its not like it will cut off a digit and nice that it felt solid. It also had a nice click to them as well when using them.
When I get me N5, if the only issue it has is a rattling power button I will be more then ecstatic and consider that one hell of a device.
I wouldnt care as long as dust doesnt get in the screen Im fine. HTC always had that issue. Plus I am getting a case so I am not worried.
Solution to your button problems:
Get a decent case, like the Spigen Neo Hybrid: HERE

Get a case it should keep it from rattling. I think the phone is too good to return for a reason like that unless you wanna switch it for another one again u might get a betternone

Tbh in all the ones Iv held there isnt much to go wrong. Unless there is any noticeable pixel issues.
the only thing i foresee as being a common fault cry will be the back plate and any gaps between the edge of this and where it meets the phones frame because its secured in with clips around the backplate. So its logical to assume that since its not glued or screwed down at every point around the device there will be points that you would be able to get a nail under and bend/flex a bit more than other points.
However this is not a fault its just through the way its secured down.
Besides this and the sharp edge of the buttons there is really nothing else to be faulty on this. Earpiece and speaker all seems to be of good quality and screen is gorgeous.
Like everything else there will be the odd faulty one that slips though but im pretty surprised at how well this seems to be put together

I don't mean to start an internet war here but this is nothing new. People complained about this from the Nexus 4 and many other phones before it. It's a pretty damn common thing and not really something to get upset about. RMAing the device will most certainly yield the same results with the new phone so what's the big fuss about?
Besides, as soon as you throw a case on the phone (as many of us do) it's moot anyway. And if you don't want to use a case just do what this guy did. Simple fix.
I wasnt looking for a war, i was just curious about the number of people who do have rattling to the number who dont.
Makes sense I suppose. I just think you can expect a large number of people saying "yes". In reality this is common with Android smartphones, in my experience.
No rattling here.

Coming from a galaxy nexus it's a bit odd...
the only creaking i had there was the battery cover
How loose is loose? Mine rattles only when I shake it and put it to my ear, but I've yet to notice it on daily use. Does that count as normal, or rattling.
EDIT- Even when I move the phone around in front of my face I can barely hear it.. Physically it rattles, though, so I'm not sure what to say. Maybe I've got real bad hearing...

Mine rattles every time I tap the button for the quick settings shade. But so far that's the only thing I have found to complain about on mine. So if that's all, I think I can live with it or fix it.

I opened my nexus up and applied the paper fix. However, while I was there I noticed that it wasn't so much the button rattling.. It was mostly coming from the sim tray area. No idea how to fix that.. I'm gonna try adding a layer of tape to the branded side of the sim card to see if it can mute any other noise

Mine would rattle every time I would tap the screen. It got annoying quick, so I took it back and got it replaced. The new one is much more solid and doesn't rattle.

IMO all has button rattle. The phone design has too much distance tolerance between from PCB button switch and the actual buttons. so based on PCB location when assembly of the phone. It can make button rattle either volume or power button. some might have less some might have more depending on the position of PCB. I've RMAed my phone for button rattle for 5 times. and all had rattle. some has less but still there.
The iPhone 4 has this problem too, and does my nexus 5 so i pretty much got used to it.
Could just be some people's OIS camera. It can make a sound if shaken.

Dual camera won't focus, makes crackling sound (water damage?)

Last Tuesday my phone got wet while on a bicycle ride where it started to rain. The phone got wet enough that it started to randomly jump to different screens. I turned it off and put it in my pocket. Once I got home and dried the phone it seemed fine, and in fact the next day used the dual cameras to take a pic with no problem. There seems to be no water damge indicator in the dual flash.
Today tried to take a picture using the dual cameras and immediately got this crackling sound and the cameras wouldn't focus. I've done a search and couldn't find this exact problem elsewhere. The best way to understand what the cameras are doing is to show a video taken with them:
https://youtu.be/rms54f8O4vA
You can both see the inability of the cameras to focus and hear the crackling sound they make while trying to focus.
If I shift to the front facing camera it works just fine.
What to do? are the dual cameras kaput?
No one huh
