Battery is discharging very fast - Nexus 7 General

Hello I have a problem with my 4 month Nexus 7 3G. I noticed that recently the battery drains very fast in standby mode - for example 6-7% per hour. I installed better battery stats to see the deep sleep time and kernel/partial wakelocks... For example the tablet is 1hour and 20 mins in deep sleep and 1 min awake and has gone from 100 to 94 just in hour... Put the the tablet in Airplane mode, did hard reset, reflashed stock rom - no go... Is it possible that my battery has failed? And is it covered by warranty?

Read the first post in the BBS thread, do it. Post the log to their thread. Perhaps they can come up with something.
First thing I'd try is turning off wifi while it's asleep and see what happens. I've always turned off wifi while my tablets slept and I see about 1% every 6 or so hours, at most.

I factory reseted the tablet, switched the cellular off, the wifi off, turned off sync, didn't install or update any program... I put it in standby mode and after 57 mins it was 5% down. No kernel wakelocks, nothing at all, just deep sleep.

As with any form of problem isolation, you are going to try a few experiments to figure out where the problem is... and where it isn't.
If the problem is the battery itself, it will self-discharge even when the tablet is off and disconnected. (Not only that but the battery might be slightly warm when disconnected, but it might be hard to detect that without an IR Camera).
One experiment to eliminate this possibility is to charge the battery, turn the tablet off, and disconnect the battery overnight. Reconnect the battery, boot the tab, and then examine
the change in battery VOLTAGE, NOT "percent charge" *
You can use something like the app "Current Widget" to read the before/after voltage.
Note that you can't just turn the tablet off in this experiment without disconnecting the battery connector, as there is a possibility the the motherboard has a defect that drains power even when the tablet is off; although if you run this first experiment and find no drop in (unplugged) battery voltage, then doing this ("does the battery voltage fall a lot with the device turned off?") is a useful 2nd experiment.
*The TI BQ72451 battery charge controller IC attempts to gauge battery state by measuring both voltage and cumulative charging/discharging currents (by measuring voltage across a small resistor in the battery terminal path). This means that it is stateful (it has onboard flash memory) and more importantly that the "% charge" value this circuit produces is a computed value, not a measured value. If you are experiencing battery problems, the % charge value should be regarded with some amount of suspicion. For a healthy battery with about a 0.6-0.7v range (say 3.5v-4.2v), a 10% drop in battery capacity will be roughly a drop of about 0.06 volts.
This isn't a solution - but a place to start to eliminate some possibilities.

It says the battery health is good. I tried everything - reflashed the factory image, even 4.2.1 image, reset to factory defaults, removed the sim, switched off the wifi/nfc/3g... it drains exactly 5%/h in standby and the battery grafic show straight line downwards...The betterbattery stats says the 99% of time the tablet spends deep sleep. I came to the following conclusions: a) the battery has failed, b) the chip (or component) reading the battery stats is faulty c) a hardware defect that drains battery...It's not software since there are no indications that any piece of software is draining the batt.

If you turn the tablet completely off, let it sit for a few hours, and then boot the tablet, does it also lose charge this way as well?
How about if you do the above experiment - but unplug the battery completely instead of simply turning the tab off?

Along this same line of thinking, I note you have said nothing about voltages. Imagine that the charge controller chip thought that the 100% charge state was a lower voltage than what it should be - this would show up as anomolously large discharge rates (%/hr) even if the current draw was nominal.
I think 100% should be around 4150-4200 mV, and 5% around 3500 mV. (You can use the "Current Widget" app to observe the voltage in a convenient way.)

Note that the charger chip may not report a "% charge" drop even if the battery is self-discharging with the device off, as no current is detected in the battery lead. Hopefully what you mean by "doesn't drain" is "voltage didn't fall".
Well, I guess you now know that the problem probably is not the battery (although you should still confirm that the almost-discharged voltage is down around 3.5v).
Doesn't solve your troubles though. That 5%/hr drain with the tablet sleeping should be closer to 5% in 12 hours, so your tablet is doing at least 10x worse than it should.
Warranty return to Asus at this point?

Will relock the bootloader and return it to the Asus authorized service in bulgaria.

Here is the graph after I factory reseted the N7 chrged to full and turned off the screen.

I've seen my battery standby performance get worse these last couple of weeks - I used to get between 5-7 days of standby time on a charge, if left unused, but the last few weeks it only goes for 2/3 days now, not sure what's changed...

NFC services were killing mine... Shut NFC off, killed the service, and it's been great for the last few days.

What is the average battery stats for nexus 7 ..

if you go into maps.....settings...location settings...uncheck all options, that seemed to do the trick for me

It's most likely the baseband_xmm_power wakelock, it's a nasty one. It comes and goes when it likes. Google hasn't come out with a fix yet. Reverting to stock doesn't help it. the only fix is to run Franco kernel, he patched it.

Mkernel also has it fixed, same with trinity and dmore kernel and I'm pretty sure faux kernel does as well, as for the stock kernel, it does not have the fix

My battery was being murdered. Eventually I traced it to having Beautiful Widgets on the lock screen. Removed that and battery life is fantastic again. Are others using widgets on the lockscreen?

Try wakelock detector from playstore which will find you your wakelocks...

[Q] Why in Battery stat "display" is showing 98%

Overcome-day to all!
I've upgraded to "Overcome-Jupiter" 3 days back and though admittedly the new ROM is smooth and fast I believe am noticing some irregularities on the battery.
I have a question and situation, wherein in battery statistics is is show that "Display" is using around 96% of the batter, all other task including the "Android system which is only 2% is for the remaining 4%.
Furthermore for a full charge, am getting around 14-17 hours usage on the batter.
I've done a "battery wipe" and have done two discharge cycle.
Any other Galaxy tab7 user here having the same issue, your comment, suggestion and recation on my query is greatly appreciated.

As for display that is normal since Froyo especially with heavy use, the beast display consumes the battery more than anything. As for the battery life if its on moderate to heavy use that seems quiet normal even good actually (remember official stock firmware gives you 7hrs on heavy use). Finally read the tips and tweaks section on our website for more info.
I have heavy drain on the battery after upgrading from Hermes to Jupiter. (All apps and setting being similar)
I can get only close to 5 hours of continuous usage compared to about 7 hours on Hermes. You're not the only one to be affected...... I've posted my cries for help :

Thanks for the quick reply, I have to agree with you on the display thing. What I wanted was actually, just a confirmation from other users that they are having the same battery statics. This will then confirm that everything is normal with my "precious/fragile SGT".

Launchers if coded correctly shouldnt have that much impact if at all on the battery. I personally am using the stock launcher only because am too busy or lazy to configure ADW launcher EX which I have an recommend

Hi. I have a strange question in relation to the topic. I use a P1000 running Gingerbread (stock no mods). I hope you guys have some solution to share to me.
I had Battery Monitor installed so I can check the battery usage and percentages, and Juice Defender Ultimate to you know, save juice.
1. There are few instances that when the unit still has 10% or below power, I sometimes encounter unit shut down (powers off) while I am browsing. So I turn it on again, the Samsung animation appears, but still turns off. Therefore I am forced to charge it (using mains plug). Is that normal?
2. Coming from a critical low battery (5% or lower), with the unit off, I leave it charging (using mains plug) until the battery goes full green (full). 4 hours or so if I am not mistaken. When I turn it on, Battery Monitor displays only 76% or 81% power.
I find that strange since it is supposed to display 100% right?
3. At 76% or 81% while unit on, I plug it to charge again, but does not increase percent anymore.
4. Upon my gut assessment, the unit still performs normally, the standby time and usage time are still as expected, the battery is working fine.
TO DO:
I am thinking to just clear data and reinstall battery monitor.
I am also thinking to install another battery application to display percentage for comparison.
In any case, is there a way to calibrate the unit when turned on to display 100% when it is really full when charged off?
I am not modding or rooting it, I am just a basic user. Any ideas? Thanks!

Try to reflash or factory reset then monitor the battery without installing the battery monitor.
I use "battery doctor to save battery" from the market. You can try that but try first without a battery monitor app.
did you try to use another usb cable? or perhaps your charger is not the original? loose internal battery connector? there are so many factors that might cause your problem not mentioned.

Thank you for the reply bongski. Without any battery monitor app, the problem is I cannot see percentages. But anyway I will do the factory reset, it is another option but I find that drastic and will be the last choice. Also, the USB cable and the charger is the one that came with the Samsung box so they're original. The loose internal battery connector is a bit far fetched, the battery is not user accessible and also the unit is not dropped and carefully handled.
Hopefully I get accurate readings, I will update here.
The battery percentage is in settings/about device/status/battery level.

ok. well i did the following
1. clear data and reinstall battery monitor.
2. install another battery application to display percentage for comparison.
i tried the battery doctor but provided the same percentage reading.
so i just factory reset the thing, and i am observing now (ie. charge later and see if the issue persist). i've no knowledge on how to reflash the thing.
well ok to clear all my doubts i just factory reset it. then i reinstalled my initial apps (including battery monitor), used it til it died (1% until it off itself). plugged to mains, turned it on, and let it charge while ON (of course screen is off). took 174 minutes (3 hours) when it reached 99% and stayed 99% (looks like it does not touch 100%) 4176mV. after 5 mins of non use, it still remains 99% but at 4012mV. with the 1% missing, i guess i can let that go and dismiss as normal now... although i read related thread

Battery stats stay messed up

No matter how many times I calibrate my battery, it lasts for over 30 mins of straight youtube watching with 3g wifi bluetooth and gps on. I know there's no need to calibrate after the stat wiping after charging to 100% but I would like my battery to display correctly. The past two calibrations told me it was off by 8% but it did it twice not only once. So how can I get my battery to display correctly and not last forever sitting at 1%

Charge to 100% (leave on charger for 4-6 hours) then calibrate (remove batterystats.bin) then deplete battery until phone shuts off by itself, then charge without break to 100%.

There is no battery calibration. A google engineer has already ended that theory. The batterystats.bin updates everytime the phone is plugged in to charge. Dropping your battery to below 20% before charging is always a wise decision, but you can't calibrate it by deleting file.

Obviously it's your battery.
The phone gets the %charge by the voltage. A good battery has a linear drop of voltage during use, but if a cell is defective, it can report a misleading voltage drop curve while still having enough charge to work. IF the battery drops under a determined voltage AND current, it shuts off. While both conditions aren't met, the phone keeps using it until a safe point, where it doesn't damage circuits or the battery itself

Battery Drains during Standby Mode

Does anybody experience a 3% to 5% battery drain just a few minutes after charging the battery to 100%? It has already reached 100% so I already unplugged it from the charger, but then I noticed after a few minutes, it went down to 97% already, and then in 10 minutes, it's already down to 96%. In 3 hours, it's down to 84%; in 7 hours, it's down to 38% and that's just on standby mode with Wifi/Bluetooth OFF, 3G OFF, GSM only. I've been experiencing this problem for the past few days now. I've already conditioned my battery, charging it to a full charge (100%) after draining the battery until it shuts the phone off. I only charge the battery while the phone is off and usually it takes about 3 to 4 hours maximum to charge it to 100%.
The longest time it reached was 12 hours (battery unplugged from charger) and that is with light use, such as Wifi is only on for a couple of hours, so basically just 2 hours web browsing and skype, 10-20 text messages and 30 minutes to 1 hour browsing the photo gallery or watching videos. No phone calls and 3G is off. The rest of the day, the phone is just on standby mode. I only have at most 10 widgets on the home screen. I have Avast Antivirus running in the background.
I am currently using Easy Battery Saver, Easy Task Killer, GO Task Manager and Battery Monitor Widget. I've uninstalled Juice Defender since I don't think it helps that much when it comes to the battery drain. Currently, the power saving option (available on Note) is enabled at 50%.
Wifi and Bluetooth: OFF when not used
Use Packet Data and Data Roaming: OFF
Network Mode: GSM Only
Auto Sync: OFF
Auto Brightness (Display): OFF and scale is at the most left
Animation (Display): No Animations Shown
Screen Timeout: 30 seconds

From a personal standpoint. Your screenshots shows that your phone had never ever done a deep sleep at all. the 'Awake' mode is continously consistent as well. I guess the probable reason for that is you've installed ''Avast AV" on your phone. It's always running in the background (whenever the phone is ON). From my experiences, Any background application running would always cause wakelocks and the phone would never enter into deep sleep at all.
How bout you try uninstalling some of the background apps your using esp. Avast AV and give it a day to observe if your still having that battery drain issue. (Don't forget after uninstalling or removing those apps, try to wipe dalvik cache and battery stat and restart your phone after.)
and Oh by the way, I am using Juice Defender and contrary to your saying it doesn't help.. IT DOES HELP save battery as I my Note is able to reach 1.5- 2 days of normal use.

Yeah and download betterbatterystats and do some searching on it. With it you can discover what is causing those wakelocks. Search the web for more info on your wakelocks.

I'm using avast and never seen a drain like that. Only time I have is because of background processing. First thing I would do is turn off Background Data
Then as others have said - check batterystats to see where wakelocks are
Plus a rooted phone is a good thing. Titanium backup allowed me to freeze wi-fi sharing which also made a big difference
Finally - clear all caches from Applications menu and reboot

Only picture that shows that is the one with 1 minute 56 sec discharging time, so it was taken shortly after taking charger out. No suprise of it being almost 100% screen on time there if its only 2 minutes
Also installing "cpu spy" will give the cumulative time that your cpu spent at each frequency including deep sleep , mine is showing 88%

Anti virus app is battery hog, I had avast before too, and I uninstalled it after 2 days using. Also that Juice defender, from my test before, it use up more battery than it saved. turning on and off those 3G/Wifi thing is using up alot of battery. and you know what? even the betterbatterystats use up alot, at least to me, becoz it scan what is up frequently.
Hello! Thank you all so much for your response. I've installed both BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy and here are the results (please see attachments). Upon checking CPU Spy, it shows there that phone did went to deep sleep, maybe? I'm not quite sure, but it shows on the screenshot that it went to deep sleep for 19%. So does that mean the phone really went to sleep?? I'm sorry to ask this question, since I've never really encountered this problem before with my previous Samsung Wave phone, how will you know that your phone went straight to deep sleep mode?
Also, after 46 minutes or so, the battery went down to 96% already after charging it. The battery drain was already 4% in less than an hour.
@letters_to_cleo: I have not uninstalled Avast yet, since I'm still hesitant to use my phone without an AV. But I will try your suggestion for 1 day and see if there's any battery improvement.

i am having problem too with new battery original samsung ( made in japan, finished in korea) previously i use samsung battery made in china, finished in korea. charged it over night with power off. it only last 13hrs. my wife phone can last 30hrs.
i've used batterymix to check the battery usage graph, the usage graph drop very fast compare to my wife phone. i'll post some screen capture of the graphs.
another issue is i used once wifi sharing. after turning switching the wifi sharing off, the wifi sharing service always at the background even after many reboot. how to turn that off??
You might need a new battery. Any rechargeable battery has a finite charging cycle. Just a suggestion.
Hi, all! I just noticed that the battery drains still even during deep sleep mode. After 3 hours or so (during sleep mode according to CPU Spy), the battery went down to 92%. It drains even faster when the phone is in use, especially when Wifi and Bluetooth are on, maybe 2-5% drain in 1 hour.
Maybe there's something wrong with the battery?? It's still a new battery and I can see some improvement each day though, but that's because I use it less each day. Before the battery can only last for 8-10 hours, then it increased to 12 hours, and then to 16-17 hours. BetterBatteryStats' current estimate to empty is 24 hours as of today, but that's because I only used the phone today for only a couple of hours, with 20 minutes Wifi and Bluetooth ON and most of the time, it's on deep sleep mode according to CPU Spy.
What do I do with the results from the Partial Wakelocks? Do I have to disable those apps?? The Kernel Wakelocks didn't show any reference apps running. The screenshots for the Partial and Kernel Wakelocks that were taken a few hours earlier still show the same results after 3 hours.

That would be really bad luck. I got my Note via preorder in Germany at the first day it was sold and since then I charged it everyday, sometimes even twice and there is no difference to the first day. If I get told by Samsung after 6month of normal usage the battery is dead that would be the last Samsung device I bought and I use a lot of Samsung stuff.

Your last screenshots show between 9:35 and 13:35 5% of battery drain. That's not really a good value but ways lower than before. Did you delete some Apps or what did you change?
And since when occurred this issue? Did you install new Apps before this happened?
On my Note I had this issue sometimes without any changes but it was gone after a reboot.

Agreed with Kanalcommander.... try a reboot in the first instance.
Others have also noted that it takes a few refresh cycles before the phone more accurately reports battery use. Perhaps what you are reporting is because the phone and battery are new (new ROM or Kernel loaded?)
What I have done in the past is to reboot into CWM recovery then clear the battery stats (in the Advanced menu option) Recharge the battery to 100% until it says to remove charger and then use normally until battery down to around 20%, then recharge the battery to 100% again. Do this over a few days and that may help.

I was having similar problems with my new note and finishing full charge in 12 hrs but fixed some things and my last charge gave me 2d6hr seriously..few things i did were stop using live wallpapers! Get badass battery to thoroughly monitor stats and then use zdbox to extend life even much eg. I put phone to auto flymode using that app when its sleeping time rest i am more than satisfied even if on GB LC1 fw..waiting for official premium suite for ics since i recently upgraded from sgs2 using ics i miss that smoothness and much better bat life.. That's what I'm currently doing right now, well, actually, what I do is I discharge the battery until it reaches 0% and turns the phone off. And then I charge the phone for 3 hours while it's switched off, I turn it back on again to check if the battery is fully charged and then I unplug it from the charger.

I haven't deleted any apps yet since I don't know which app/s to delete. Most of the apps I downloaded in Note were the same apps that I used in my iPhone4 and Samsung phone before.

This issue occurred since the first day I bought the phone, which was a couple of weeks ago. How long does it take to condition a new battery and new phone?? I'm sorry if I have to ask this question, it's just because I never really experienced this problem with my previous smartphones.

I only installed recently CPU Spy and BetterBatteryStats and that's it. The drain of 5% from 9:35 to 13:35, the phone's just on deep sleep mode. And then from 13:35 to 23:44, it went from 92% to 74% while the phone is on deep sleep mode at 90% according to CPU Spy. That's 18% battery drain. It's just an unacceptable number for me. I tried rebooting the phone already, but every time I do so, just a few minutes after I turned the phone ON, there's already a 1% drain in the battery.
Also, does the battery really drain faster when the Wifi is ON? I've read in other threads that there might be some problem with the recent OS update that Samsung needs to address. Is this true?? Because as you can see on the screenshot below, the battery was still at 74% by 23:44 and then after I turned ON the Wifi and used it until 01:26, the battery went down to 54%. That's already a 20% battery drain in just less than 2 hours. I was only browsing through the Android Store and Skype.
Calibrate your battery in case you flashed any roms and for first usage I got my battery to 0% 3 times then everything is running great for example its at 47% now its 22 now and I have had it off charge since 7 morning..... i have wifi gps and 3g always on and use music player bluetooth and made some calls

My battery (also only a week old) drains quickly too. Can anyone tell me if widgets draw a lot of current? And then is it only the ones on the visible screen or do all widgets draw juice all the time?
I will ask such thing, did you guys check the battery expiration day ? Mostly sibce you got your phone almost a yeae after it was announced you nay get a bad battery, as for widgets the ones that are always active and asking for informatiom. Like location or weather over the internet yes they do eat your battery kinda fast.

Recurring battery drain? - Caused by memory of using app to drain battery?
Hello!
I used a battery drain app when charge left was 30% to accelerate drain to "die out" stage. After I completed the calibration process for unrooted phone as suggested in various sites (charge fully, switch off and charge etc.) I started using it from a 100% stage.
This afternoon when the battery showed 30% I saw in BMW the current flow was in -10ma to -15ma and it started spiking to hundreds. There was no change in settings or usage. From the 30% level it dropped to 10% in an hour and I had to charge again.
Was puzzled why the battery which was dropping around 0.5%/hour in standby earlier to the 30% level suddenly went down hill. My first guess was it was possible some file in the system remembered the previous usage history and replayed it out.
Any suggestions? Anyone faced this before? Everyone says LiOn batteries dont have memory so if anything it has to be the phone.

[Q] Weird Issue, phone auto shutdown when the battery is like 5% on Lollipop ?

My XT1092, recently got updated to Lollipop i.e. Android 5.0
Two of my battery runs, starting from 100% full charge came down to like 5% and the phone shut down automatically as if it was 0%
Also on a side note, i did not put any mode on the battery saver mode for those two runs.
Now to test it, i kept my battery saver to start at 5% but i am not sure if it will run at 5% or just shut down
Anyone got an idea/solution for this issue ??
P.S. Even Motorola care chat, does not have an answer, all they said is to keep my phone in safe mode for a day and check it out....
Mine just did this the other day. When I pressed the power button it showed the battery with a little red fill and a huge yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Also happened last night.

My XT1095 does the same thing. Really annoying! Its really lying to you about how much battery is left if its going to do that. I just know that if i'm going below 10% i better run to find a charger ASAP!

I've never let my battery get that low honestly, but...
Keep in mind that your battery percentage is completely an estimate. Battery capacity is measured in mAh, but there's no way to measure the current charge capacity in mAh of a battery. The only way to do so would be to run all of the power out of the battery and record the power over time, but then you'd have a dead battery. As a result, the system estimates your remaining battery capacity as a percentage based on the current voltage of the battery. But that can be different depending upon how quickly you've drained the battery and other factors.
So, Android has methods built-in which automatically calibrate the battery, but they only work properly if you fully charge and discharge your device on a regular basis. A battery starts off weak, then it gains strength after a few charging cycles, finally over time it peaks and then begins to taper off as far as battery life goes.
You've likely not taken your device to 0% for a while. The android solution is to fully discharge and recharge your battery a few times to allow it to recalibrate. Slow charging is the best for recalibration. Plug it into a computer for 500mAh charging rather than using a charger. Chargers can charge quicker(1.5A) but do not allow the device to calibrate as well due to the high amperage.
So, just use your device and let it drain fully, and charge fully on a computer USB port and it should recalibrate itself.

While it does help the calibration, it's very bad for your battery to do this deep discharge multiple times.

Sometimes you don't have a choice about letting battery drain get that far.
But regardless, its most definitely an issue with lollipop. Uncountable android devices, and this is the first time I've ever experienced this issue. Happens religiously at 5%. So its never happened before on any device I've used, including this moto x pure on KitKat, and it always happens at 5%.
If it were a true calibration issue, one would think it'd happen at different percentages. However I'm certain this is a bug.

I understand that you don't always have a choice, I just meant that I have no insight as to the possible bug since I've never experienced it. And to clarify, it's not really a "calibration" issue, it's a matter of there is no way to accurately measure the charge of the battery.
Honestly, Google could have even implemented this intentionally in order to prevent damage to the battery from a deep discharge.

But android has been completely accurate in the past. Right down to 1 single percent.
And there's no way google implemented this as a safety feature. If they were legitimately trying to do this, they'd just have the battery monitor read less than actual capacity as to not confuse the operator.
As well as they have what they believed to be a big feature, "battery saver" which has the option to activate at 5%. So them killing your phone at 5% intentionally doesn't hold water.

No it hasn't. It may not have shut down until after it read 1%, but it has not been accurate because there is no accurate way to measure the current charge of a battery.

The fact that it consistently shuts down at 5% does seem like a bug, but it's a very odd bug since it seems like there would have to be some code to specifically tell the phone to shut down.

Every android device I've owned, probably 12, including the 3 still in service with me (moto x before lollipop, nexus 7, nexus 4) all have accurate battery meters right down to 1%. Now are they adjusting on the fly and lowering/raising battery percent to accurately match calculations? Probably. But it adjusts to where the battery meter will read down to the very last percent. No surprises.
The whole point of this thread us that some moto x pures are shutting down at 5%. Maybe the battery really is at 0%, maybe its at 5 or 10%, but its a "bug" that the phone is shutting off at 5%. Its rather a flaw in on the fly calculations where its not accurately adjusting at lower percentages, or a software flaw. But it's a bug either way. That's the complaint here.

That is was Microsoft did with their Surface tablets, you can change it, I have mine set to power off at 10%

Wrong. this is the recommended way to use every mobile phone battery. A full charge and discharge is called a cycle, and cycles are how battery lives are rated.

Mobile device batteries are designed to be "fully" depleted. They are software controlled. You will never discharge a properly controlled battery 100%. This is why your device still has power to turn on and tell you that the battery is too low to turn on.
There are always exceptions to the rule. However, mainstream devices will almost always keep the battery at a safe level.
You cannot use a single chart on all lithium ion batteries. In fact, every one is different due to chemical and annode/cathode changes. This is why every battery has its own MDS for shipping purposes.
The small changes to batteries cause them to react differently to different usage patterns. When designing a battery these reaction patterns are supposed to be accounted for in the battery calibration.
A key engineering principal: a device should never be capable of destroying itself. Full discharge is normal operation for most devices.

Xiaomi programmed obsolescence on battery

H, since I updated from miui 10 to miui 11 and even now that I have miui 12 I have noticed that the battery doesn't last as long as before. I state that since I purchased the phone (July 2019) I have always charged the battery in the best way trying to never go below 20% and trying not to go beyond 80% so I don't think a battery can lose more than 30% of its real capacity in less than a year of life. Starting to investigate I found that the battery does not charge at its real capacity i.e. 3300 mAh but at around 2200/2300 mAh. To verify all this I have carried out several tests and the easiest way to verify it is to look at the battery characteristics through the AIDA64 app (screenshot below). From these tests it seems that the device limits the real battery capacity by not allowing it to be charged to its maximum capacity. A reply to what I wrote can be found by looking at some system files that are located in /sys/class/power_supply/battery. In particular, looking at the file called charge_full (screenshot below) you can see how the value of the file is much lower than the real battery capacity. I hope someone more competent than I can understand how to solve this hateful problem and I also invite you to check the value to try to better understand the cause of this problem.
I'm using miuimix 12.0.2 stable and the capacity is not 3300, either.

I know that batteries won't be forever and are always decreasing during the year but I think Xiaomi do a good job. I have some devices from 4 years ago and they reduced their batteries just a little. In the case of Mi 9 I have it since March 2019 and my battery still being the same. I charge it from 10-25% to 100% just some times I charge it until 80-90%, maybe every month I let it to 0% I wait for a while and charge it again to 100%.

From the photo you posted it doesn't seem that your battery is fully charged .. we have done other research and we have discovered that most likely Xiaomi has inserted in the kernel a sort of programmed obsolescence on the battery.
Can you disclose some of the research you done on the kernel it seems interesting. I have checked with Aida64 my battery before and it never charges to 3300 even if you leave the phone plugged in the value will keep increasing but once you plug it out it drops...still getting about 5 hrs sot so not bad...I wonder if you change that value in the full charger screen you posted what will happen?

Actually it's better for battery life longterm to keep the device in the middle - never 0, never 100
I've certainly lost no battery life in the year + I've had the Mi 9
You are doing a good job of using the phone in the 20 to 80% range. But do you charge it at the lowest possible temperature? Temperature is a battery's worst enemy. Wireless charging is a joke. It's a glued heater in the battery.
I for instance, almost all the times charge it in front a mini fan. With this I can charge it 5ÂșC below normal temp charge.
And like @cezikos said, use quickcharge only on emergencies. Use at max a 1.5Amps charger. Quick charge is a marketing thing. The chemistry of the batteries are almost the same in this 10 years.
Mi mi9 have one year and the battery is 100%.
The important thing that you should precise is a type of charger that you are using. Do you use Quick Charge? If Yes, then battery capacity will be dramatically degrated. I use 5V 0.5-1.5A charger, it depends how fast I need to charge the Phone.
The next thing is a battery temperature, not Only while charging the Phone but also when you are using it. I`m using CPU Monitor and it's overlay to see the battery temp, you can also configure alerts when battery is starting to overheat.
Heavy Gaming decreases the life of the battery, there are a lot of variables that you have to cobsider, not only "programmed obsolescence"
I had the same problem. Hopefully the battery could make 3 hours of screen, the strange thing was that suddenly it began to last very little, and I was with that problem for a couple of weeks, so I decided to calibrate the battery hoping to have some results and now the battery lasted again approximately 7 hours of screen. Try to make the battery run out from 100% to 0%. The system will not let you start because it calculates that it has no battery, so what I did was leave it in recovery mode and with the screen always active, until it turns off completely, then with a 5V 1A charger. With the phone turned off, charge it until it reaches 100%. I did it three times and the battery was back to the way it was before. You could try to do the same and I hope you can solve that problem.

Then I plugged the charger 1.5A and let it charge to max.
It worked, now the phone has a steady discharge, not discharge 100% to 80 in an hour.
I will do this procedure from time to time. not the best for the battery, but is needed in mi9...

Battery on my Mi9 (mildly used in one year) lost 500 mAh.
Confirmed, with this trick, in doing it ONE time, I have the phone running well again, more than 8h screen on.
0.5 discharge in sleep.

Then are several apps that can do it. Like l speed or adiutor.
And now again confirming, in one month the phone is completely lost regarding battery again, just 3h SOT from 80 to 20. There's some pretty **** up code regarding battery in xiaomi android.

Hello guys, just want to share with you a little trick that just helped me get better SoT. First of all, I just want to mention that I'm on the newest xiaomi.eu rom (20.8.13) and that AccuBattery is showing that my battery is at 2500mAh estimated capacity. (That might be different in reality, because it's only after one charging, so don't believe it that much). Lately I noticed a significant drain while the phone was idle (screen turned off). It was draining like 1-2% every hour and I could barely get over 5h SoT. So I investigated a little bit, and found a solution on reddit. The thing was that I had many apps on autostart. If you want to check them and turn it off then open Settings > type 'autostart' in the search bar > open it > 3 dots > show system apps > turn off every unnecessary app that you think don't need that option. I turned off every app, except: Gmail, GPay, Google Photos, Clock, Calendar, Bank app, Weather app and the app called 'safety system addon' - it might be called different because I'm not on english language on my phone. I left them on just in case to have notifications/synchronization, though i don't know if it's necessary. After that there was almost 0% idle drain over the day. Now I'm on 5h4m SoT and still have 25% of battery left. The result might be even better, cause I did this trick just today while my phone was on 90-85%.
Give it guys a try, hope it will improve your daily experience with Mi 9.
P.S. Let me know guys If I could turn off the before mentioned apps and still get notifications and sync from them.
Mine reports 2800mah, debloated with Szaki tool all autostart apps disabled also did factory reset after miui12 update.
Really sad how bad miui12 has turned for me. Im having way worse battery life compared to miui11 the idle is mostly the same its just the battery doesn't last as it used to last with miui11.

I can confirm this. AIDA64 said my battery was at 2550mah capacity when fully charged. I followed this procedure and now after being fully charged, it says 3125 mah, which is much better.
I'm curious about the screen on time now. Me happy. Thanks!
