[Theme/Guides/Mods] Various threads and posts- NO LONGER MAINTAINED. - Sony Xperia T, TL, TX, V

I'm going to use this thread from now on to post any work, and link out to existing work so i don't take over the forum with new threads.

Rules:
A couple of simple rules to help me help you.
Use the search button/Google before posting, you'll probably get a quicker, more deatailed answer.
Please post in here and not in the existing threads I link to, leave them as a reference.
If you post bug reports, tell me how to duplicate the issue, and if possible post a screenshot.
When asking a question or for advice, it helps if you tell me exactly what you want to achieve, (where you are and where you want to go). Please post plenty of relevant information.

Here is a quick and simple way to change the system background for Sony based ROM's.
What you need:
5 minutes
A rooted device
7zip >>LINK<<
UFT.zip >>LINK<< THIS CONTAINS PRE-BUILT DIRECTORIES!
Backgrounds of your choice- 720x1280 maximum dimensions. Named "semc_bg_bright_tile"(light), and/or "semc_bg_tile"(dark).
Instructions:
Download and install 7zip
Download UFT.zip
Right click "UFT.zip" and select "7zip>Open archive"
In the new window navigate to "MORPH\system\framework\SemcGenericUxpRes.apk\res\drawable-xhdpi\". You will see an image named "REPLACE_THIS_IMAGE_720X1280_MAXIMUM.png", delete it!
Place your new background files in here by dragging and dropping. They must be called "semc_bg_bright_tile" and/or "semc_bg_tile".
Close the window and place on you sdcard for flashing
Note: Make sure signature verification is turned off!!

Obviously not as it tells you the location and names of the png's.
Of course im assuming your xperia tipo firmware is the same as the xperia T, if not then why are you posting here and not in your parent forum?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1982
You dont change 2 png's to change settings background, you change 1, the dark png as named in the OP.
And no you dont necessarily have to use whatever your screen resolution is, but it wont hurt. A lot of firmware that isnt riddled with Sony's messy overlay use "background_holo_dark" and "background_holo_light" at 512x512 pixels found in framework-res\res\drawable-nodpi to display the background

How to invoke a status bar background image.
The following was tried and tested on the SystemUI.apk from xperiment 2.3 JB but should work on others.
You do the following at your own risk.
What you need:
A basic understanding of apkmanager/apkmultitool.
Tools used:
apkmanager v5.0.2 for de/compilng.
UFT (universal flash tool) for pushing.
Image editor.
Draw9patch (sdk tools).
Step 1
decompile SystemUI.apk and open up "res/values/drawable.xml"
Step 2
Search for the line of code reads:
Code:

[COLOR=Red]#ff000000[/COLOR]

Then carry on with Step 3.
If it reads:
Code:

[COLOR=Red]@drawable/***[/COLOR]

move on to step 4
Step 3
We need to change:
Code:

[COLOR=Red]#ff000000[/COLOR]

To
Code:

[COLOR=Red]@drawable/NAME_OF_.9.PNG_IN DRAWABLE_FOLDER[/COLOR]

I used this:
Code:

[COLOR=Red]@drawable/status_bar_bg[/COLOR]

This will tell the system to display "status_bar_bg
Step 4
We need to add an image with the name of the drawable.
e.g.
Code:

@drawable/status_bar_bg

I would add a .9.png to res/drawable-xhdpi named status_bar_bg.9.png
The images MUST be a .9.png. I tried running standard png's and SystemUI stopped running.
Step 5
Delete "res/values/public.xml" and recompile.
When asked "is this a system apk?" choose yes.
When asked if you would like to "copy over" choose yes.
In the keep folder delete "resources.arsc" and continue.
If it compiled without errors you should have an apk named something like unsignedSystemUI.apk. rename it to SystemUI.apk and push it to your phone.
End result:

[MOD+GUIDE] Carrier logo's for stock ROMs (and others)

I have always loved the extended settings Andy Thomoson has made for MIUI (found here), especially the carrier logo's in the statusbar
Well, I have been messing around with the SystemUI.apk from the latest 2.3.7 OTA for the NS4G and made it accessible for that stock ROM. I'll make one for BuglessPete's GPA17 and maybe CM soon.
I'm pretty sure this option has been around for a while but it really is a cool mod and wanted to revive it.
Here is an example of what it looks like
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The logo can be a lot of things.. Here is a good thread for some carrier logos
So here is the one I showed in the pic: download here
^^That zip was built against the 2.3.7 SystemUI.apk for the NS4G.
I will take requests. Also please refer to the second post for a "How-To"
Instructions
1) Flash ZIP in recovery and rebot
2) Download this eri.xml.zip found HERE
3) Extract that eri.xml and copy/paste it to /data
4) Change permissions to "everything"
-looks like this using Root Explorer or ES File Explorer
5) Toggle airplane mode or reboot to see changes
6) Enjoy!!
How To Submit Request
1) Post your SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk from your current ROM
(SystemUI.apk is found in /system/app and /system/framework)
2) Post the carrier logo you want (or give an idea of what you want)
3) Post what ROM your using
If you want any other mods like differnt colors for the clock, date, ticker notifications, pretty much anything in the statusbar letme know and I can do that as well
GUIDE
1) Decompile your SystemUI.apk
2) Navigate to your decompiled SystemUI folder and goto
res>layout>status_bar.xml
3) Open it with word processor of choice (I prefer Notepad++)
4)Find the line that starts with
Code:
<com.android.systemui.statusbar.IconMerger
5) Place your curser right at the beginning of that line, press enter to make a space
6) In the empty line now, copy/paste this line of code
Code:
<com.android.systemui.statusbar.CarrierLabel android:textAppearance="@android:style/TextAppearance.StatusBar.Icon" android:textColor="@android:color/transparent" android:gravity="left|center" android:id="@id/carrier" android:background="@drawable/carrier_logo" android:paddingLeft="6.0px" android:paddingRight="6.0px" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:singleLine="true" />
7) Save and exit
8) Now goto res>values>ids.xml
9) Open that xml and add this line to the end of the id's (right above the </resources> at the bottom)
Code:

false

10)Save and exit
11) Now take your carrier logo picture you want to use and place it in res>drawable-hdpi and name it "carrier_logo"
12) Now compile your SystemUI, sign it if using apktool and make it into a flashable zip
Here's an empty flashable zip folder structure you can use
DOWNLOAD HERE
Just extract that zip, place your moddified SystemUI.apk in the /system/app folder, then select both the system and META-INF folder and zip em up
EDIT: 2-13-12
I changed the code for the carrier logo to hopefully get rid of overlapping text with carrier logo

Ok I attached a zip you can flash in recovery. Everything decompiled/recompiled fine with no errors.
I also attached the SystemUI.apk by itself in case the zip doesn't work, try moving the SystemUI.apk to /system/app/ and change permissions to rw-r--r--
@melvinchng
Attached is the modded SystemUI in a flashable zip and standalone apk
Just a quick reminder, don't forget to follow the instructions in the OP especially when it comes to the eri.xml to get rid of the double logo
Thank you very much, Fergie, but the mod don't work...
The ZIP file give me an error on flash in recovery and the sistem-ui make disappear the status bar...
Where is the error???
Sorry sorry

It should work
Try toggling zip verification in recovery when flashing the zip
if copy/pasting the apk by itself, you have to change permissions of the new SystemUI.apk to rw-r--r--
Or you can use adb to push it to /system/app/ then go into adb shell and run
Code:

[THEME CHOOSER APK][HDPI][UPDATED 10/28/11]Fergie's Mix

Hello all.. I have been working on this Mixed Theme Chooser apk for a while now.. It consists of elements from some of my favorite themes for Theme Chooser.. I was using this for personal use but had a lot of requests to share the apk. However since none of it is my personal work (besides a few small things) I wanted to get in touch with the original creators to make sure it was OK I released it.. So I did just that and here I am
False alarm on the MDPI, will fix asap. If anyone can test on an MDPI device please contact me via PM or Gtalk at [email protected] thanks
There are so many people I want to thank (in no particular order)

Enable Transparent Statusbar
So I thought I'd write a little guide to help folks experiencing the "Ghosting" issue
These might not work for all devices! Really depends what ROM you have
Ok, so the easiest way to get rid of the ghosting in the statusbar
zdunes patcher
*Download the patcher and follow the instructions to set it up
* Place your framework-res.apk (found in /system/framework/) and your SystemUI.apk (found in /system/app/) in the "files_to_patch" folder
*Start "patcher.bat" and select "Browse Statusbar Tweaks" then "Enable only Transparent Statusbar"
*Follow the instructions and after you make the smali edit thats needed select option 5 then 6
*Put the "statusbar_patch.zip" and "statusbar_undo.zip" on your SD card and flash the patch zip in recovery. If something goes wrong, flash the "undo" zip
-UOT Kitchen
*Go to the kitchen and go to the "File Upload" section
*Upload your framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk from your current ROM
*After apk's are uploaded, goto the "Status bar" tab and select "Use This Mod"
*Select "Enable transparency in status bar"
*Go to the "Summary" tab, then select "Submit work to kitchen"
*Remember your order number then wait to pick it up
*Download your zip form the kitchen when it's done and flash it in recovery
-apktool
*Download apktool and get it set-up. Make sure you meet all the prerequisites
*place your framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk in your apktool folder (my path is C:\apktool\ )
*in cmd, cd your path to apktool (ex: cd \apktool)
*now enter this
Code:
apktool if framework-res.apk
apktool d SystemUI.apk
*navigate to your decompiled SystemUI folder and go to /res/layout/status_bar.xml
*Open it and scroll towards the bottom. You'll see a line like this
Code:
<com.android.systemui.statusbar.DateView android:textAppearance="@android:style/TextAppearance.StatusBar.Icon" android:gravity="left|center" android:id="@id/date" android:background="@drawable/statusbar_background" android:paddingLeft="6.0px" android:paddingRight="6.0px" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:singleLine="true" />
*change this line
Code:
android:background="@drawable/statusbar_background
to this:
Code:
android:background="@android:color/transparent"
*Now navigate to smali>com>android>systemui>statusbar>StatusBarService.smali
*Open it with a text editor and search for this line
Code:
invoke-direct/range {v0 .. v5}, Landroid/view/WindowManager$LayoutParams;-><init>(IIIII)V
*directly above it you will find:
Code:
const/4 v5, 0x2
*change this to:
Code:
const/4 v5, -0x3
*Save the changes you made. Now back in cmd type
Code:
apktool b SystemUI SystemUI-transparent.apk
*Take your newly compiled apk and rename to SystemUI.apk. Sign it using APKManager or something similar
*make a flashable zip out of it or copy/paste to /system/app/ and change permissions to rw-r--r--
*Reboot
The apktool method is basically the same as zdune's patcher. Just thought I'd write that one up in case someone can't download the patcher
other tips
*If using ADW or ADW EX try going to ADW's System Preferences and disable "Wallpaper Hack"
*Try using a Live Wallpaper or MultiPicture Live Wallpaper

And if you post a link to that app I can probably do it. Your referring to the icon that pops up in the notification bar correct?

Yes in the top left. Its called Music Mod, I'm going to look for the link since its only xda where I've seen it, thank you. Here is the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1164334 I noticed the alarm clock icon too, could you change it to the one that looks like the miui theme? Its just that the icon doesn't match with the battery wifi etc.
Wow the settings menu is sweet. Hopefully we see an mdpi version so I can try it out.

[MOD]Blue ICS/JB theme for orange GB parts[ALL ROMs][27/08/12-final]

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE OP!
Hey guys, I really like the holo theme of ICS/JB, but really hate that Google has not yet themed the orange GB parts of the framework... it's certainly an eyesore, even with some apps that use holo theme, there's some orange GB parts remaining.
This theme, changes the colour of remaining GB parts to blue holo style. I've tried to achieve the holo style as far as I could. :fingers-crossed:

Currently I'm using it on CM10, and I've tried it on AdamG's Jellybelly (before it was discontinued *sniff*), stock JB odexed ROM, stock JB deodexed ROM, and CM9. It worked perfectly on all of them but as a user have reported, it does *NOT* work on Brainmaster's stock JB ROM because he use XHDPI png's.

here is HDPI folder all .9 files are drawn out use as reference shouldn't have any issues compiling
just heads up you have SDK these are located in SDK/platform/android-15/data/res with the res of the framework
also if you use apktools when you decompile the apk it will automatically put the lines in for you
also if you decompile any apk with apktools it will add the lines to .9 files automatically

you said you had problem with .9 files i was assuming you dint know how to do the lines..if dont wrong you might have issues that why i posted them..to give you a refrence
After i do the lines i used xUltimate-d9pc from command prompt in windows
then you are all set
if you want i can do. If you have the the lines it will take just a sec for xUltimate to fix
m1l4droid said:
I used apktool. decompiled the framework, edited png's with Photoshop, and when tried to compile, got ****load of errors. Those errors happen when you remove a PNG and don't remove the line for in public.xml, which is weird because I didn't remove anything. Just edited them.
Thanks for your help, I will send you the png's, I think I'll redo them, was not exactly satisfied with the ones I recreated, and will try to make it more ICS/JB style, not just recolored GB. Also I think I messed up some of those lines in .9.png files... But I am not home tomorrow and probably the day after tomorrow. But I'll jump on it as soon as I can and will send you the PNG's, if I couldn't get apktool to work.

apktools can have issues when recompiling ICS framework probably same with JB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601511
I just pull res folder and edit images colors
Use draw9patch to do lines
then xUltimate then replace images manually drag/drop back into zip works just as good

[GUIDE]Theming your ROM on Phone(Editing framework-res.apk to change icons)

So friends, here is a quick and easy guide for changing the status bar icons of your s5830i(Actually any phone )
For those who don't know how to do it(for anyone actually :highfive
Theory
Android is the awesome platform which is easily configurable and is able of being edited very easily
The icons used in every app and Android framework are located as png images in apk of those respective apps in location:-
*.apk/res/drawable-mdpi (in our case, as our phone is mdpi)
So, we can change any icon of our status bar like battery, signal, (not clock[clock is to be configures in SystemUI.apk{will post how to change it shortly}]), etc by editing png's in framework-res.apk
Not even that, you can edit images of any app as I told you
There are several ways to decompile and compile apk in which we have made change
If we want full access of apk and want to change every thing like the xml's in it and smali content in jar files, then we would have to do it on computer by apktool or apkmanager
But, we are here to only change image, so we would not go in detail of apktool or apkmanager. For changing images, that can be very easily done even on the phone by an app NinjaMorph that is made for developers by our senior head and DEVELOPING LEGEND Stephen(Stericson)
But be careful as backing up the original file if you do something wrong
And as you all know any developer or even a newbie posting something interesting that you want to try WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE for your mobile blowing up, resting in peace, sleeping like a dead, behaving like a non-living BRICK, or anything whatsoever that may or may not happen to phone in this universe or any other universe known or unknown
What to do if anything happened to my mobile
We have had a backup of your original file so we can restore it
But if while editing the system files like framework-res.apk
If you deleted some un-backed up apk's
Well you can always have backup of your ROM and that is why Koushik Datta has made clockworkmod Recovery
You can restore your ROM from there
Pre-Requisites
Patience
Mind
A GT-S5830i (A spare one if you brick your phone, just kidding)
Root access(to change the apk)
NinjaMorph(http://bit.ly/ninjamorph)
Root Explorer(Optional)(http://bit.ly/stericson)
GUIDE
So Let's Start
Download NinjaMorph. Install it and give it root access. It will prompt for starting checks. Click on start checks.
Now you would have three options, namely, New Project, Finish Project, Existing Project
Click on new project. Go to system/framework/ and click on framework-res.apk. It will start extracting files
Once it has extracted all the files, it will open to show you what is inside framework-res.apk.
Exit it and go to your file explorer.
Go to /sdcard/AndroidThemes/workspace/framework-resapk
This is what is inside apk. Go to res/drawable-mdpi folder
There you will see hundreds of icons of your menu, lockscreen, battery, signal, and everything
You can edit them and replace them as you want. But the name of the file you are replacing and size and dimension must be equal to the file you are replacing with(I recommend Googling and finding icons of battery, signal, and other things)[I have even used hdpi icons, there was no problem]
If you download a theme file which is to be flashed in recovery that is not for your phone, no problem, extract the zip and place its framework-res.apk in your sdcard and extract the apk with Ninjamorph. Replace your icons with its icons and TADA
After you have done replacing the icons and you are satisfied(I am never)
Go to NinjaMorph. Click on Fininsh Projects. Click on framework-resapk. It will recompile and ask to replace the original apk with modded one. Click OK
Then it will ask if you want to remove the completed project, Say No(As you would need it if something gets wrong)
Reboot your phone
Maximum chances are that your icons will be replaced. Rare cases have their status bar gone or no change, if so:-
Download(Buy) Root Explorer. Go to /sdcard/AndroidThemes/workspace,
There you will see framework-res.apk. Copy it and go to /system/framework
Mount as R/W
Paste the apk. If it asks that file already exists, overwrite it.
SET PERMISSIONS
Long click on framework-res.apk and click on permissions
You will see three columns
Read Write Execute
You have to set them in the following way
x means you have to tick it
blank means uncheck
Read Write Execute
.....x........x.................
.....x...........................
.....x...........................
Click OK
You will see it as rw-r--r--
Reboot
Do it over again if nothing happens
Enjoy
This way you can edit not only framework-res.apk but any apk
Treat

You should edit Mms.apk
I don't know as I never edited Mms.apk
For colour you should edit xml files
Which won't be accessed by this method
And the code you are asking for
You won't get the xml from this method
So you won't be able to edit it

That was my bad coz thats in framework-res.apk , but instead of talking like that you couldve simply answered my question. I know a lot about theming and have made themes for myself and since ive been out ofall of this work so i forgot. Using the vrtheme template is making a mod is easy but you can change the bg by editing the tw_status_bar_expanded.xml in the layout folder. Its good that you are making such mods available to everyone. But anyways , i still didnt get the answer i was looking for.

Well, sorry coz i was bad in explaining. I just replied in hurry and if you know all theming and all for our s duos then this question for "simply changing the statusbar_bg.png or stat_bar_bg.png in systemui.apk or framework-res.apk" whatever has no mean at all from you.
Well my friend, i was meant that there is no such file in any of apk file having such image file for background of notification panel.
And mate only systemui can have such files for status bar and its panels. Neither in framework-res.apk or not any other.
Explanation in short
What i did is:
As you have seen my this thread
Enabling/modding Transparency
Then in this part 'Now for making StatusBar Expanded/Notification Background transparent.'
I just changed the value "#xxxxxxxx" to "@drawable/statusbar_bg".
In files 'tw_status_bar_tracking.xml' and 'tw_status_bar_tracking_dual.xml
but not 'tw_status_bar_expanded.xml'
So you changed it from id/#### to @drawable right ? Wow ill check those xmls out. Thanks

Not id
I changed '#xxxxxxxx' (color value) to @drawable/statusbar_bg" (source of image)
where @drawable/statusbar_bg" means @drawable-hdpi/statusbar_bg.png
Ok so instead of using the color value u redirected it to the png ? Great, ill have a try with that transparency mod of yours as this mod is based on that i guess. Thanks

For transparency with background mod needs this:
Use any image editing software like Gimp (I always use this only )
Open that image in it and change the opacity as per your need, save it as 'statusbar_bg.png' only and then continue with step 9.
Here are some screenshots for gimp:
Yes i figured dat out , used an image with some transparency already in it. Thanks for the mod
Just a suggestion- this mod replaces the existing systemui.apk so it actually removes the theme which is already present. So it would be great if you can make a mod which actually just changes the current systemui.apk instead of replacing it. You can easily do this by using the vrtheme template u used in this thread.

My friend, if you are using any one of my themes or stock theme, see all the first post again clearly. You will get all your answers for that.
But if you are talking about this:
If you or anyone did something himself/herself for theming without my themes by replacing pngs or by using any other app . Then there is no solution just now because values has to be changed in values folder only so it cant be done by vrtheme patcher and if vrtheme patcher will not do this then obviously previous theming will be lost.
So for them and for you too, its better to make backup of systemui before flashing this mod.
cheers
Yes i was using my own theme so i themed your apk given in the mod. So do you have to change a value in one of the files in the values folder? Cant you replace the whole file in the folder with a modified one ? Vr theme template can be used to replace a particular file just like u replaced the statusbar_bg.png in drawable-hdpi.
