Samsung Smart Dock - Galaxy Note II Accessories

Hey everyone. I just bought the Samsung Smart dock. Everything seems fine, but there is one Problem. If i watch a Video in Fullscreen, the control buttons disappear and don't show, if i move the Mouse...the Cursor doesn't show either on my TV, only on my Phone. Anyone can tell me how to fix this Problem? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure if you click on the bottom where the controls are supposed to be they will show up.
That's how I got mine to show up.
Can't hover..you have to actually click on the bottom as if it was already showing.
Edit...I'm pretty sure the pointer shows on mine though...

Once you connect external keyboard, you won't need to touch your phone. Phone screen is blank with keyboard attached.

Now i can guess why this isn't working so well. Im using a Wireless Keyboard+Mouse combination through a stick ( not bluetooth). The Phone doesn't show the Keyboard in the drop down menü at all, but the Keyboard works though. This must be the Reason.
Does anyone know a trick, where i could make my phone think, that a usb keyboard is plugged?
EDIT: Found a trick. I just plugged in an another USB Mouse and the display of the Phone turned off. Now everything works great. Its a waste of a USB slot, but im ok with that...better than buying new Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
EDIT: Its laggy somehow, if 2 Mouses are connected. I need a way, to modify the USB reciver of the Mouse/Keyboard. Anyone can tell me, how to get access to a USB devices, to modify it?

Try pluging a USB flash drive instead of the usb mouse and see if the wireless one will work OK

The lag might be because of the screen turning off. I currently have that issue. When I plug in a wired mouse, the screen on the phone turns off but the output over HDMI gets really laggy. It happens even when you only have the wired mouse connected without any other USB peripherals. I haven't found a workaround for it yet.

The case is... hardware video overlay.
To be more specific:
1) whenever a hw-decoded video is played, it is handled by GPU only (-> only video surface is rendered, no software overlay controls, etc. available via HDMI)
2) you can force software rendering ("composition") by attaching an external USB HID device (mouse/keyboard, but keep in mind that a USB RF receiver for mouse/keyboard does not trigger renderer switch) - both video and overlay controls will be available via HDMI but with a degraded performance ("software rendering")
I do the following: use external mouse, etc. to select a desired video, click 'play' and then disconnect the USB accessory.

Tell me about the smart dock, it looks like it should be charging a spare battery in the back but I didn't read that anywhere in the description... Also you can only use it in portrait mode?? What's up with that? I find it hard to get over these 2 hurdles for $99.

The back of the device has hdmi out, micro usb port for power and 3.5mm jack for audio out to externally powered speakers. Initially it will only work in portrait but you can either use a launcher or you can use the app Ultimate Rotation Control to force the phone into landscape, even on the homescreens. Either option works well. The phone also come with a 2A charger as well. For $99, a keyboard and mouse (logitech k400 is awesome!) a few play store apps and a little time to get everything setup just the way you want, you will have a fully functional mobile computer.
When I disconnect my phone I use the rotation app to go back to auto and my phone functions just the way it normally does. Stupid simple.

video decoding method isn't the only cause of lag.
in desktop mode there is quite a performance drop even when not playing any video files.
you can test this with 3dmark, your score will be average when using screen mirroring, but it will drop by 10% when in desktop mode (single screen)

Has anyone possibly figured out a way to disable or remove the Galaxy Note 2's "desktop mode" switch? I have a USB mouse which I would love to use with it (don't want to spend extra $ on a bluetooth mouse), so I was thinking that the problem could be solved if the automatic detection of the mouse and subsequent switch to "desktop mode" could be disabled somehow. Thoughts?

Xoom/Tab keyboard?

My apologies if this was answered before, but do the Xoom or Galaxy Tab branded bluetooth keyboards work well with the NC? My thinking is that since they're designed to work with android, they'll be much easier to pair and maximize functionality with the NC (dedicated android function keys, adapting to orientation shifts, etc). I have a Microsoft bt keyboard I've tried and it's not convenient for me. Anyone tried either of these two yet?

Thanks for the referral, and I have checked out that thread a couple of times. Unfortunately, it looks like no one there has tested a xoom or tab keyboard. Anyone able to confirm if that purchase would be worthwhile?

From another post I made:
I still have problems with bluetooth keyboards, runing nightly 126 and 131. I have a Xoom bluetooth with a modified qwerty.kl file to enable most of the android special keys to work. The three annoying issues with Xoom keyboard is that it will stop working while typing long messages, have to hit power button on it to restart; a key will stick kkkkkkkkkk; and not easy to get out of pop-up for accent keys. You do not see these problems? The best feature is that I can leave power adapter plugged in with bluetooth.
When I use my Logitech wireless usb combo keyboard and mouse I only seem to get the pop-up accent box. The negative is even with a y cable it does not seem to charge nook while in host and v-bus mode. The combination arrow and keyboard interface is really slick.
Anybody else notice these flaws with bluetooth and usb keyboards?
Edit: At this point I can not recommend the Xoom keyboard. My Logitech wireless usb combo LX 710 Keyboard and LX 7 Cordless Laser Mouse both work with transmitter plugged into male micro female usb adapter. I prefer the usb combination.
Just found this negative post about Xoom keyboard. Exact same problems that I have.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14150996&postcount=70
Edit 2: Maybe I was too harsh on the Xoom keyboard. I changed the batteries, seems better. When you long press a key is when you get accents. A feature not a flaw. Also after 30 seconds of no typing it sleeps, press key for a second to wake it back up. Another feature.
Bluetooth Mouse with Xoom or other Keyboard
Now that I changed the batteries and researched the long press and battery saver sleep feature for inaction, I have been trying to find a bluetooth mouse that seems to work well with the Xoom keyboard. Any input on this?
If you have a different bluetooth keyboard is there a bluetooth mouse happens to work well with your bluetooth keyboard?

I was hoping this was true. Over in the usb host thread Moshe posted a picture of his setup. We discussed the mouse being bluetooth but found out that the logitech laser mouse is a wireless usb mouse. Still only one report from TheAmazingDave of quality concurrent use of bluetooth mouse and bluetooth keyboard. I can get them concurrently but when the keyboard kicks into sleep mode it locks up the bluetooth mouse pointer and force a hard reboot.
@ Dal and Verygreen. Do you think since the bluetooth mouse and bluetooth phone work on phone concurrently, that eventually we will be able to make them work on the nook concurrently?
Edit: I have loaded two apps Null Keyboard v2 and BlueInput. Not sure what they changed but I do not have the concurrent problem any more. The BlueInput only finds my Bluetooth mouse but does not connect. It does not find the Bluetooth Keyboard at all. The Null Keyboard v2 is suppose to hide the virtual android keyboard. This response is the first time that I have seen the Keyboard work correctly.
Spoke to soon, Xoom keyboard went to sleep and when I pressed key to wake back up, virtual keyboard showed up also.

HD Dock Remote

I'm considering purchasing the HD Dock, mainly for the remote as well as the docking features as well. But my question is, is the remote only able to be used when in the dock, or can I use it whenever? Also, is it bluetooth or infrared?
Thanks guys!

You must be docked to use the remote. I believe it's infrared.
Honestly, the remote is a nice bonus, but if it's really your main reason for buying the HD dock you will likely be disappointed. For one thing, it doesn't work with all apps -- the Netflix app, for instance, won't respond to it. It will work with Google Music, some video players, and you can use it to scroll inside a web browser. The volume/mute buttons can be useful. The buttons however can be kind of "sticky" and difficult to keep from over-pressing.
Having said that, I love my HD dock. I hardly use the remote though. I have a wireless mouse and keyboard attached via a USB dongle and I mainly use those to navigate, in both Webtop and Mirroring modes. I think you will find a wireless mouse works much better for most couch-surfing purposes vs. the remote. Logitech now makes a "couch mouse" which works great for me.
It's a special RF remote. It works directly with the dock. It is rather short range too, likely because it uses a button cell battery. On the plus side, the dock enables USB host, allowing for use of flash drives, keyboards and mice.
I got mine for $55 on ebay. Keep in mind that it doesn't come with the hdmi cable(I know), but you can get one from amazon for like $5.
[Edit] It looks like I was wrong. It is IR. Just checked it with my camera app. Most camera sensors detect IR and translate it into white light.

Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard k400 & Smart Dock??

Hi guys, has anyone tried Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard k400 with Smart Dock to see if these are compatible?
Yes they are compatiable and works pretty nice, only thing is that it doesn't turn off the display so you'll need a wired mouse/keyboard/w.e to do that (think there is an app that does turn off the screen)
Personally I plug in the k400 usb and a wired mouse and go to town

FWIW! When I first got my smart dock and tried to use my logitech k400. It did'nt work. So I had to re-pair it by plugging in the dongle to one of the usb ports on my computer and going about the whole process to pair it with the keyboard. Once that was done. I unplugged the dongle from the computer then plugged it back in the smart dock, and everything worked. So that may work for you. But if it doesn't, then I would replace the keyboard and or the dock.
Also for anyone wondering how to get the screen to turn off while its plugged into the dock. I use an app called Screen Standby. And if I remember correctly. It should work both unrooted and rooted. I also use Rotation Locker to manually change the screen orientation to landscape. These two combinations have worked great for me whenever I use my dock.

My K400 + Note 2 Smart Dock stopped working nicely together after a week or two with the dock. They worked beautifully together originally, but then I made the mistake of using the K400 with a windows laptop. I'm thinking that somehow, the keyboard still thinks it should be paired with a windows device and isn't connecting well to the phone via the dock somehow. I'm not sure why this is happening or how to fix it.
Sounds like another member (laztpn0i) had the same issue. I can successfully connect the K400 to both windows laptops I own (one on Win7 home premium, the other on XP professional). There is no required / proprietary software to install in order for the keyboard to work. In the device manager, the keyboard just shows up as "HID Keyboard Device" under "Keyboards".
How do I break the link between my windows computers and this K400 so I can use it again with the smart dock for my note 2? Sounds like something you had to do as well, laztpn0i, so any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much,
Phil

Nexus 7 Car Install

I've decided to put together a Nexus 7 car install after pricing up an OEM retrofit for my E90 & quickly getting north of £1200 with no guarantees that everything would work as I wanted.
I've used Android devices to provide navigation & audio since getting a HTC Desire many years ago, but I've been caught out a couple of times recently using navigation on long journeys with my HTC One-X completely flattening its battery despite being on charge the whole time!! The last time left me navigation-less in a strange city, in rush hour traffic, with no way to contact anyone.
I've been reading around Nexus 7 car installs today & everything that I would like to do seems to have been done before, but I'd like some ideas for the best way to pull it all togther.
The main use for the Nexus will be to provide navigation & audio. I gather that Timur's kernel - USB ROM contains features which are suited to using the Nexus in a car install - are there any other ROMs I should have a look at?
I would like the install to look as professional as possible but be removable & reversible, so I'm thinking of a mounting it in a SHG-NX2000, & I would prefer to use a single USB connection to the Nexus rather than a USB & 3.5mm so from my googling today I gather I can achieve this with an OTG USB cable & a USB DAC.
I've not used an OTG cable before, but the ones I've seen on ebay seem only to be a couple of inches long - can anyone provide a link to longer one or can I just use an extension cable & stick the OTG cable near the hub? The idea I've got in mind is to run the host OTG cable from the Nexus into a powered USB hub located in the glove box or behind the dash. I would supply the power to the hub from a DC-DC convertor to make sure everything gets the power it needs. Are hubs usually wired to supply power to the host device as well as the connected devices? Are OTG cables available which allow the power to be supplied to the host? If so, I could use one of the ports on the powered hub to supply power to the Nexus via the OTG cable.
I don't have a spare line level input to my stock BMW headunit, but I do have an aux in on a 3.5mm socket which I don't mind re-routing & hard wiring to the output of the DAC - can someone link to a USB DAC best suited to this task?
I would also like to install a reversing camera. There are cameras available which either replace a license plate light, or mount around the license plate - I would prefer to use one of these over a webcam. I had an idea of using an Easycap to connect the license plate cam to the USB hub - has anyone done this? The license plate cams pick up their power from the reversing lights - is there a way of using the fact of the camera powering up to switch the Nexus to auto display the feed from camera when the car is put in to reverse? Taking this idea a step further, has anyone configured a system where if the car is then subsequently taken out of reverse gear the Nexus switches to a forward facing camera either for a fixed amount of time or until reverse gear is re-selected to give you alternating rear/forward views when parking up?
Shopping list so far:
Nexus 7 (1st gen) £119
SHG-NZ2000 £22.39
DC-DC convertor £5.50
10-port powered hub £6.19
Micro USB OTG Host £1.99
E90 License plate light CCD camera £17.00
Easycap £3.37
USB DAC £11.49
Total so far ~£185
Anything I've missed? Better components? Cheaper prices?
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated
I would think the only way for a rear cam to work is to modify it and your tablet ...no usb input... You could try to use the housing of a rear cam and put a web cam it and seal it up good then use that .... That way you'll get a wide veiwing angle ....

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'no usb input'? I'm talking about connecting the CCD camera via the Easycap to the USB hub which is connected to the Nexus. It is because I don't think I'll be able to reseal the housing well enough that I don't want to use a webcam, plus the CCD cameras are powered when reverse is selected which I'm hoping should make driving an event easier.

not sure if the usb on the back of the dock supports otg or not, cos i wanna connect up reverse camera and dac aswell
I considered doing something similar, but when I looked into it, it would seem that the official dock only charges and passes audio

Hi there,
I was just wondering if you had any success with the camera? I've got a Nexus 7 install and want to wire in my existing Rca cam. I'm sorting out the reverse signal with a joycon exr steering wheel control but I want to know if the easycap thing you linked to earlier worked as a capture device on Android or whether I'd have to go for the UVC grabber in the other link which definitely works but is much more expensive!
Thanks!
Any update on these types of cameras?
I want to do the same thing, except the camera is in the front (not the back).
Any success with the EasyCap? It seems they have bad reviews on amazon, but maybe they work great for how we want to use it.
Also, have you tried using a 4 channel EasyCap? That way we could hook multiple cameras.

In the process of doing the same to mine.

So far I've managed to get it to launch apps when power is supplied and shutdown when power is disconnected. But does anyone know of a way to get it to power on when power is supplied? I've tried reboot when power is supplied, but that only works if the tablet is already on.

So far I've managed to get it to launch apps when power is supplied and shutdown when power is disconnected. But does anyone know of a way to get it to power on when power is supplied? I've tried reboot when power is supplied, but that only works if the tablet is already on.

Tab 8.0 Working MHL/USB OTG adapter

Just a quick post to let people know that the following adapter works with the 8" Galaxy Tab 3. As it's only about £10 I thoroughly recommend it.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E60A0XC/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The Tab 3 I used for testing purposes is a Christmas present for my girlfriend so I only had a brief play with it to make sure that both Tab and adapter were working properly before hiding the former away back in its box As a result I won't be able to test the adapter again until after the 25th! Please note that the Tab is completely stock...
Anyway, here's what works.
MHL to TV using the HDMI output on the adapter:
This works very well. The screen of the tablet remains on so you can manipulate content directly on the tablet's screen while mirroring it to the TV.
MHL to TV with simultaneous USB OTG:
This is very cool and in effect turns the tablet into a mini PC. In this configuration I plugged a mains powered USB hub into the USB port of the adapter, then I plugged an 80GB bus powered hard drive and a dongle for a wireless keyboard/mouse combo into the USB hub. When I plugged the dongle for the wireless keyboard/mouse into the hub, the screen on the tablet turned off. This is actually a great feature and I wish my Note 2 did the same thing to help keep it cool. The Tab automatically senses the keyboard and mouse as well as the hard drive. Attaching the hard drive triggers the file manager to open so you can browse its contents. I tested a couple of SD movies and they played smoothly with no slow down. The keyboard worked almost as expected, the exception being that the 'Home' key on the keyboard didn't work at all for me (it does on my Note 2) which was problematic until I realised that the 'Internet' shortcut key on the keyboard acted as a home key. The other Media shortcut keys worked for me. For those who haven't used a full sized keyboard with their device before, the 'Right Click' button to the right of the space bar acts as the Menu key (essential) and if you hover the mouse over a scrollable list, you can then use the mouse wheel to, um, scroll.
For those who haven't used MHL before, bear in mind that a device has to work harder to mirror the display to the TV. As a result things can get a bit jerky. To this end I quickly ran Epic Citadel benchmark to see what impact this had on the Tab. In the higher quality setting mode the Tab scored 54 fps on its own, and 45 fps when connected to a TV. This is much higher than expected. Web browsing remained fairly fluid when connected to the TV too which is good.
As a final Note, the TV I tested the adapter with only has a 720p panel and not full HD, so your mileage may vary from a performance point of view. If you find the edges of the Tab's screen a cut off on the TV, go into TV's settings and select 'scan only' for the picture format.
Hope this helps.

Good grief, it's huge! (that's what she said )
I'd be worried about damaging the connector on the tablet with all that mass hanging off it, even worse with cables.

LOL
I think the picture shows it with an S4 from memory. It's just under 3 inches long and half an inch thick (!). It is a bit awkward with cables attached to it, but when i use it with my Note 2 it's just awesome.
Does this enable charging the Tab while everything is plugged in?
I have T310 model. See many compatible adapters on ebay, sellers confirm compatibility. Just came across this site meetmhl.com. Clicked on "do i have mhl" bottom of page. My devices were recognized. Says "sorry your galaxy tab 3 8.0 does not currently have MHL technology". WTF???!!!
I've ordered a generic or samsung? tab compatible. When connected with the oem charger cable my tab gets power but not charging. "HDMI connected" pops up for a second but no signal to tv. HDMI input is recognized as active and selected in tv.
Confirmed the adapter in the opening topic works as advertised

Video out and OTG cannot be used at the same time because they are on the same connector , they are mutually exclusive. Why would you want to use USB for a bluetooth mouse when you can just use Bluetooth?
i emailed the company and they said me that it is possible!! !i am rooted and i lost ez mirror option, so i was looking to that option because ONLY bluetooth keyboard and mouse are very expensive!! !!!
