TO PERFORM A NEW INSTALL (ONLY), AUTOMATICALLY WITH SMACKME2
SmackMe2 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2132703
Copy the two provided files (uImage.kexec and TouchPadBuntuRootfs1304b2.tar.gz) to the sminstall folder under the root of your /media/internal. If "sminstall" does not exist, first create it.
Follow the instructions on how to install "native Linux' in the SmackMe2 thread.
TO PREPARE FOR MANUAL UPGRADE (NOVATERM)
Install NovaCom and NovaTerm on your "real" computer - please consult one of the many references on how to install it.
Boot the TouchPad into WebOS.
Connect the TouchPad to the PC with a microUSB cable.
Enter USB mode and copy the uImage.kexec and TouchPadBuntuRootfs1304b2.tar.gz files to the root of your TouchPad's internal storage.
PROPERLY "eject" the TP from your PC.
Enter Developer Mode. (In the Just Type box, type "upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart", and select Developer Mode.)
On your PC, open "novaterm".
You are now ready to type in the "Manual Installation" commands.
MANUAL UPGRADE (Commands to type into Novaterm)
This will erase any data and settings stored under Ubuntu. Stuff in the media storage (/media/internal or /mnt/sdcard) will be unaffected.
Code:
mkfs.ext3 /dev/store/ubuntu-root
mkdir /tmp/u
mount /dev/store/ubuntu-root /tmp/u
cd /tmp/u
tar -xzpvf /media/internal/TouchPadBuntuRootfs1304f.tar.gz
umount /tmp/u
cd /media/internal
mount -o remount,rw /boot
cp uImage.kexec /boot
sync
TO BOOT AFTER INSTALLATION
Reboot your TouchPad.
Select "kexec" in the MoBoot menu, and press Center to boot kexec.
Wait for the white screen.
Select "Ubuntu 13.04" in the kexecboot screen, and select (press POWER/SLEEP button on top, not CENTER button).
Wait for Enlightenment to start.
TROUBLESHOOTING / FAQ:
If you don't see Ubuntu in the moboot menu, that is normal - you have to boot Kexec and then boot Ubuntu 13.04 from kexec.
If your TouchPad doesn't have a "kexec" menu option after rebooting, make sure you copied uImage.kexec to the proper location, and retry.
If your kexec uImage doesn't boot or freezes before the white screen, check your free space on the boot partition (/dev/mmcblk0p13). Delete kexec, free up at least 3MB (by deleting extra uImages and/or themes) and recopy it manually.
If you can't select Ubuntu from the kexec menu, make sure you're pressing Power and not Center to select it.
If your kexec freezes instead of booting Ubuntu, make sure you have the latest kexec from this post. The old one doesn't support large initramfs files which are present in 13.04 beta2 (and the final version.)
If you experience problems with Kernel 3.0.8, remember that it is alpha quality!
To reboot your TouchPad if it stops responding, hold down Center and Power until you see "Please release key(s)."

How's battery life with this?

Battery life is something I haven't tested. It's okay, I think, about 3-4 hours. Remember, Ubuntu doesn't sleep on these, never has AFAIK.

i cant format the ubuntu-root to ext4. everytime i run mkfs.ext4 i get this error while mounting:
mount: mounting /dev/store/ubuntu-root /tmp/u failed:Invalid Argument
if i format to ext3 mounting works. Can i use ext3 instead of ext4??

I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, I don't mind to start from scratch.
But..... Would upgrading from 12.10 to this version via novaterm screw anything up?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

That (ext3) should work - I enabled the config option where you can mount ext2/ext3 as ext4 on my kernel. I forgot that webos uses slightly old filesystems
I'll update the instructions.
In the battery life quest, I just noticed that the dnsmasq process often eats up 100% CPU, so I just disabled it. I'll upload a revised image to the same link (love GDrive), but if any of you have already DLed one then I can tell you what to do to fix it:
in Terminal:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
delete or comment out ("#") the line reading "dns=dnsmasq" and save, quit, reboot (or sudo killall dnsmasq)

castrwilliam said:
That should work. If you were to encounter any trouble installing then there is an error with the commands I posted.

I remember there being sleep issues on old builds. On this, can I sleep the device, or does it have to be shut down when not in use?
- Thanks, always wanted an Ubuntu build

Also, right clicking was really annoying before. Is it usable on your build?

You need to turn off the whole tablet, yes. I don't think it was ever made to work on ubuntu. It wasn't really a priority when we were missing stuff like headphone audio. I guess I can look into dmesg and try to diagnose.
To right click you need to click on the mouse cursor button on onboard, and then the flipped looking pointer button on the 2nd row down of the button group that appears - after tou do that, the very next click wll be seen as a right click.

I'll take a look once I do the install later today, waiting for my TP to finish charging up. Thanks!

I haven't tried this release yet, eclipse worked fine under 12.10.
May not be compiled properly or hasn't been updated to the 13.04 armhf port repositories.

Depends on what you're installing. Remember this is an ARM powered device and not your normal x86/x64 processor you'll find in a normal laptop or desktop.

Thanks for this.
When you say final beta I assume you mean final build?
Or do you have plans for something that can be considered past the beta stage of development?

Thanks for this. Things seem to be running alot better than the previous 13.04 build.
A couple things i noticed -
The onscreen keyboard didn't easily come up. I have a bluetooth one so maybe i gave up too soon on trying to get it.
I also have a bluetooth mouse. After a minute or 2 of using it the cursor disappears from the screen. You can tell its still connected because as I move it, various things get hovered on.
Flash player is no longer available for firefox or chromium. I tried linking to the webos flashplayerlib but it still doesn't work. i installed the gnash stuff but that doesn'
t work everywhere.
Thanks again for this though. is working great post from it now.

Isn't there an Open-Source flash player somewhere?

Linux, Ubuntu ports etc for gt540

NEW START POST
This page will be for the topic of linux on the gt540 all distros that will support arm-v6 arm-v7 and armel as these will all work with the exemption of arm-v7 which will of course run with some lag.
So far we have ubuntu and debian running but want more variety is best.
Any helps with scripts speed improvements sharing set ups etc is highly appreciated this thread will be open and transperant in its knowledge.
As with the rest of xda i would like for this to be all about joining together to make something great
VERY SLIM DOWN EASY TUTORIAL TO GET YOU GOING
1. First up your on xda so please for the love of god tell me your device is already rooted and you have busybox??? if not very easy download z4root do a permanent root or temporary if your scared of warranty etc second download busybox installer from the android market and install. Mur4iks rom is most popular and supports loop devices not sure about other roms also have debugging turned on you need that for adb.
2. Make sure you have the android sdk windows drivers etc etc or if in ubuntu or linux make sure you have this file setup
/etc/udev/rules.d/99.android.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="usb",ATTRS{idVendor}=="1004",ATTRS{idProduct}=="61b4",MODE="0666"
3. Make sure adb recognizes your phone run
In windows adb devices
linux (sudo) ./adb devices (ubuntu can be fussy)
Any problems at this point consult the almighty google or android development page that has all information for trouble shooting adb and your device
4. Ok so here is where the phone begins and all the code and missing steps and going back etc etc
At this point a strongly suggest a coffee a cup of tea some music or a smoke if you do
5. Now we must download a version of linux that is compatible with our phone as mentioned above armel arm-v6 are preferred
Theres three ways we can do this
1. We can go to androlinux.com if we wish to have a easy to set up ubuntu system
2. We can download linux installer from adroid market and choose an appropriate distro
3. For the more tech savvy download direct and set up the whole base system to custom sizes run custom scripts on boot etc etc if a few people did this it
would however be great as we could have a multitude of gt540 linux flavours
6. There are alot of VNC Viewers out there im not gonna say what ones best as everyones opinion is different on this put simply type vnc in the market have a read look at some screenies and choose one thats right for you as we will need it later. Has to support tightvnc though.
7. The file we downloaded we have to move this unziped to the root of the sd card.
8. If using linux installer from market simply start installing we will catch up with you later on the vnc set up gui etc
9. Ok the file is happily in the sd card root (Yay) Now you need to open a terminal or command thingy in windows cmd.exe everyone sets up the sdk differently so pretty much in ubuntu or linux you need your file path then /platform-tools in windows the same cd into that file
10. Now we are inside that directory test adb so Ubuntu--- "sudo ./adb devices" Windows ---"adb devices"
It should come up with devices attatched 6437946238946 type thing congrats your sweet to go
11. Start adb shell Ubuntu---"sudo ./adb shell" Windows---"adb shell"
12. #su
13. #ls
14. #cd sdcard
15. #ls
16. At this point you should be able to see the name of the distro say ubuntu sooooo
17. #cd ubuntu
18. #sh ubuntu.sh
19.Warnings code blah blah blah
20. #bootubuntu
21. PEOPLE USING LINUX INSTALLER COME BACK
22. You will have something like this #linuxboot
23. If you now get [email protected]:/# or Linux-ARMEL:/# or similar yay we are now running a distro parallel to android in chroot which is awesome!!!!!
At this point feel proud because regardless to gui etc you have linux.
Worst comes to worst recompile kernel again with loop support for the people doing customs and check your code.
24. This is quite possibly the worst part and most time consuming #apt-get update that will take for ever
25. Once that finishes #apt-get install openssh-server once thats done type #passwd and set your passwords etc
26. And then #apt-get install tightvncserver
This will require xxx space and needs to do blah blah blah when given the option Y/n choose Y for all of these
27. Ok in ubuntu if it goes phyco #export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 that will get rid of germain and bring english back debian etc dont worry only seems to be ubuntu
28. LG GT540 came out 600mhz so on any system we want lxde or similar so #apt-get install lxde
29. Now personally i dont run lxde on startup because i like to tinker and i dont mind writting the code in terminal after i boot the system takes all of what five seconds but if you want it to run on start up
cat > /root/.vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
icewm &
lxsession
Then hit Ctrl+D twice and enter to save the file.
30. Now for me after boot i do this
#export USER=root
#vncserver -geometry 1024x800
If your using above you only do this once for me i do it everytime
31. Run #ifconfig to get your ip addy etc
32. This is something i do just to make sure #swapon -s
33. Now the tightvnc server is ready to connect to your phone or computer. Just point to the IP address and use port number 5901 to connect.
THAT SHOULD BE IT ALL SET AND READY TO GO OF COURSE YOU CAN ADJUST HOW YOU LIKE AND DO AS YOU WISH
MANY THANKS TO ANDROLINUX.COM LINUX INSTALLER FROM ANDROID MARKET AND GOOGLE FOR MANY WEB PAGES I VIEWED
IF I USED ANYTHING YOU PIONEERED ITS ONLY SO I CAN SHARE WITH OTHERS AND TAKE THIS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
HAPPY MODDING TO ALL AND I HOPE WE CAN ALL WORK ON THIS AND HELP OUT.
how would you do it?
Ubuntu jaunty supports ARM-V6 Architecture
And all the smaller Linux systems supported Pentium 2 processors slash hardware
Pentium 2 processors started at around 300mhz with smaller caches and buses then our device
Android is based on Linux our cyanogen mod system is based on 2.6.29
So in essence we should be able to port several Ubuntu / Linux flavors to our device and run them through a virtual machine off the SD card using loop device and swap or as a dual boot by flashing the Ubuntu / Linux system to what we know at the moment as the recovery partition
any help we can get to do this is needed anyone and everyone

why don't try debian?
I'm currently using rc1 eyecandy because I have a fetish for nice GUI s
I like what I've heard about debian but looking at screenies it just didn't look like my thing lol tbh it looked like a hollowed out version of Ubuntu
What's the benefits of debian if I did switch?

already available to download for armel -> so i think it would be easier 4 you to port (i think there are no/not so big differences between armel & armv6).
btw debian is the father of ubuntu and their repositories/paths/commands are compatible.

I got ubuntu with LXDE running. Gnome does work but takes too much memory and long time to load. LXDE is Light fast and Quicker at loading. Here is my video. But it is chrooted (running alongside android and off the sdcard)
Here is the Link

That's why I'm working on x11 etc to see if the GUI. Could be full size yet fast and lighter on hardware less mem 2d no hardware acceleration etc

Alright, so this is a guide to finally get the backtrack 5 software running inside of webtop. It uses chroot and xterm to allow full access to the software contained within the backtrack 5 arm image.
Prerequisites:
CWM Installed:
For all version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
WebTopMOD installed:
For 2.3.4 go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169457
For 1.8.3 go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093790
You do not need to download the Debian disk image. Will we be using the backtrack disk image instead.
BusyBox Installed in /system/bin:
Downloaded "BusyBox Installer" from the app store.
BE SURE TO INSTALL IN /SYSTEM/BIN!
Click to collapse
The Goods:
BackTop.zip:
Download and un-zip the attached files into /sdcard/bt
BackTop.zip
BackTrack 5 ARM Image:
PART 1 : Download Link : http://bit.ly/p1BT5
PART 2 : Download Link : http://bit.ly/BT5p2
PART 3 : Download Link : http://bit.ly/BT5p3
These download links are from the xperia backtrack project and where I took inspiration to get it working in webtop. After using 7z to unarchive just place bt.img in the /sdcard/bt folder. The archives other contents can be safely ignored.

What you should have by now:
WebTOPMOD for Atrix.
BusyBox Installed in /system/bin.
Downloaded scripts placed in the /sdcard/bt folder.
Downloaded bt.img placed in the /sdcard/bt folder.
Click to collapse
Give it a go:
Step 0: Connect the phone to display/lapdock. Run webtop and wait for it to boot.
Step 1: Open LXTerminal from the dock and type "cd /sdcard/bt"
Step 2: To run BackTop type "sudo bash backtop"
You should be presented with a white xterm screen. You can now use all the utilities built into backtrack 5 with ease. You can even run the gnome desktop environment! (More on that bellow)
Click to collapse
Running Gnome:
You first need to kill off all the webtop crap do this by typing the following in xterm.
"ps ax|grep awn|awk '{print $1}'|xargs kill"
"ps ax|grep panel|awk '{print $1}'|xargs kill"
Then start gnome by typing "gnome-session" in xterm.
Click to collapse
Accessing sdcards:
You'll need to make two directories inside of backtrack /sdcard and /sdcard-ext to do this type:
"sudo mkdir /sdcard"
"sudo mkdir /sdcard-etc"
Once you've done this simply reboot your phone and restart BackTop.
Click to collapse
Known issues:
ettercap causes network connectivity inside of webtop to fail.
If something does go terribly wrong you can always force quit backtop with the following command:
"sudo bash /sdcard/bt/forcekillbt"

Cool stuff, I'll definitely check this out. Moved to development.
mate I don't have webtop but as a network engineer I'm giving this a big thumbs up, super cool to have a pen testing suite in your phone!!!

its a pen testing Linux suit. its essentially Linux loaded up with hacking tools meant for testing networks to prevent hacking or "penetration". hack your own network. discover the vulnerabilities. and patch them. - to put it simply
This is amazing. Thanks.
7z issue with the bt.7z
Hum... I might be doing something wrong but I am not able to uncompress the 3 volumes posted in the links... I was able to download them all but the only one who actually I can uncompress is the first one and it generate a file bt.7z that I am also unable to uncompress... I am getting the following msg when I try to 7unzip them:
"cannot open file 'x:\xx\xx\bt.7z.002' as archive"
Should I join them all into one then use 7zip?
Forget it I just found it out by myself... is using a program to join them all into one then Unzip it.
My dream come true .............. i assume that we can run kismet and metasploit framework ?!
What kernel and rom were you able to make this run well with as i am having really bad reboots after i undock the phone from the lapdock as i am running faux123 kernel and cherry crust v3.
webtop when connected to hdmi not doing anything...
I was trying to use this backtrack distro on my AT&T Atrix and I must admit that I am a kind of noob on this ... I wasn't seeing big advantage until now that we have bt to use instead of the stock version...
I have no Lapdock so I am using Ronaldo_9 CWM version to run Webtop on HDMI in my GB 2.3.4 ( 4.5.91 from Kenneth Penn ). It was working til I followed these instructions ...
Well a little bit of what I did:
1- Downloaded the WebTopMOD from Joe Ferreira v2 to install with CWM.
2- Got also BusyBox installed through the BusyBox Installer over my /system/bin
3- Downloaed (even knowing it's not needed) the Debian disk from Joe Ferreira link (to install webtopmod).
4- Downloaded the BlackTrack 5 image from the links on the first post
5- Downloaded the BackTop.zip from the first post
6- Created the /sdcard/bt folder and put only the bt.img and forcekillbt and backtop files from Backtop.zip file onto it...
7- Plugged in my HDMI cable over my tv (yes I have no lapdock)
8- The Webtop option pop's up and when I selected it.....
Nothing happened... not even an error msg or stuff... the only thing still working is EC... but webtop none.... Does anyone of you have any clue or hint of what can I do about it?
EDIT: Got it working... it was because of the broken V2 WebtopMOD so I flashed the V1 and everything went fine.... Thank you all for not helping it made me a better researcher
I think I just wet myself I've been waiting for someone to come up with this since they started the ARM archticture and ported it to the XOOM tablet

BCM4329 supports Promiscuous Mode and Multiple Monitor mode.
It supports Packet Injection, too.
The WiFi module needs to be modified for enabling these things... I'm currently working on GenTop, but after finishing that work I can take a look at it and see if I'm skilled enough to enable it on the driver.

Great! I adapted my repository and added your file recommendations, so anyone can build a CM10.1 release.
But I see, that Phone.apk isn't crashing - what did you there? (I would take this also into the repository).
Regards to the bluetooth stack, when compiling I see this message. Maybe someone can explain this:
external/bluetooth/bluedroid/Android.mk:8: NO BOARD_BLUETOOTH_BDROID_BUILDCFG_INCLUDE_DIR, using only generic configuration

Really weird! Ah, I see! Phone.apk2 is not loaded - so no crashes
As for the camera, maybe it is possible to use the camera wrapper from the samsung piranha branch. I will try that.
Any idea why storage is failing btw? It mounts to /data/media and does nothing after that
gonna download and help out with the test front.

fresh build
I made a build tonight, sdcard not mounting, no hq video, camera not working. The image I downloaded is missing framework2.jar, if you still have it most things are working. I am missing a bunch of apps so going to try to find out why they didn't build. I used the latest JB rather than jellybean-stable if that makes a difference.
Edit I see there is a new image up, will wait on new one with hq video working though.

Then perform the build as usual. You should get an build similar to my preview.

Found out that the sdcard binary from stock is not compatible since version 4.2.1. Have to use the one from CM10.1.
Also vold mounting looks at /etc/fstab.vold instead of /etc/fstab.ArchosDeviceID.vold.
Now there are permission failures
Looking further then...

HP Touchpad running Ubuntu Touch

THIS THREAD IS NOW OUTDATED. Page 17 and on contains information for Ubuntu Touch Saucy port.
NEW THREAD ON THE WAY.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426924
What works. Wifi+ADB+Touch.
What doesn't work: Sound+Bluetooth. Bluetooth doesn't work yet in Ubuntu Touch, and Sound doesn't work with the Evervolv source. Camera.
Download these files.
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-to...c-demo/quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip Ubuntu Touch RootFS
Recovery Image.
http://gdurl.com/A0mz/download
Put on your SDCARD and install in ClockWorkMod. You know.. when you first turn on the tablet, moboot loads.. you should see a menu for clockwork recovery mod.
EDIT: Oh yeah.. First do a factory reset in recovery mod, THEN install the zip files... The factory reset formats the cm-cache and cm-data partitions.. There are 3 partitions. cm-cache cm-data cm-system. Factory reset formats cache and data.. When you install the first zip, it formats the system partition. Then after that install the RootFS.zip that you downloaded from ubuntu... It extracts the RootFS to the cm-data partition, that you formatted. So it should be clean.
Reboot.
Enjoy!
Oh yeah.. Onscreen Keyboard is not sized right. Seems to be an Ubuntu bug... If your fonts are wrong. .reboot.. check out /system/etc/init.d/90userinit for the stuff I added.
thanks to the usual guys. JCSullins, Evervolv, Tigeris and litz and ompx in ubuntu-touch on irc. The wifi fix was an idea I got while stuck in traffic. Can't believe it worked.
Oh yeah.. THANK YOU DR. MARBLE.
PS. I read somewhere you need at least 600MB of free space, AFTER you copy the files to the sdcard, for the extraction to go well...
nice
Awesome, can't wait to try this out!

Yeah, I think that's how it will always be. The core zip is device specific and contains the CM base while the phablet zip is for all devices.
Off to 3.0.8
EDIT TO POST. UNMOUNT PROC OUTSIDE OF CHROOT VIA USERINIT, AND NETWORK MANAGER WORKS WITHOUT FANOTIFY
Going to try a newer kernel to get wifi working. We need Fanotify in the kernel for the network manager to see the wireless. Has to do with proc mounted inside of a chroot and daemons having permission. Sad because once you run ubuntu_chroot shell to get in, you can run iwlist wlan0 scan...
Status Update Complete.
How to compile. Grab evervolv's device folder, but not his vendor folder.. grab hardware/qcom hardware/atheros and the compat-wireless from.. some folder.. forgot the name... I got these from evervolv's ubuntuphone branch for tenderloin.. (the kernel) and his build of android.
Those are the current sources.. May change.. Be sure to change ev.mk file to cm.mk, and change /vender/ev (inside of ev.mk) to /vendor/cm, ev.dependencies file to cm.dependencies....
JCSullins announced he will start work on JB. So that is cool. But.. 3.0.8 Kernel doesn't have working sound or bluetooth. Until someone figures that out with 3.0.8, Ubuntu-Touch and the Touchpad WILL NOT HAVE SOUND. (cough cough nag jcsullins cough cough).. That guy is the man to go to for that.
Backporting Fanotify is not easy. You run into having to change the msm code. (I ran into msm-watchdog.c) So much you might as well just go to 3.0.8.. I have an odd feeling that is someone were to backport it, sound would stop working....
EDIT TO POST. UNMOUNT PROC OUTSIDE OF CHROOT VIA USERINIT, AND NETWORK MANAGER WORKS WITHOUT FANOTIFY
Backup you jellybean system folder to a tarball and then extract it somewhere.. Same with the Ubuntu Touch system folder.
(I was about to give up!)
cp -R -f /jellybean/lib/* /system/lib
cp -R -f /ubuntutouch/lib/* /system/lib
cp -R -f /jellybean/etc/firmware/* /system/etc/firmware (my adreno firmware was missing, so this will fix that)
reboot.. and it worked.. merged libraries.
Fonts are not bad all the time..... Going to try this with 3.0.8 tonight.. If someone is bored today, give it a shot. Let us know how it works.
To brunch tenderloin I have to manually create out/host/linux-x86/bin and stick mkimage in there.
go to vender/cm/vendersetup.sh and add add-lunch-combo cm-tenderloin-userdebug.. I think.
there is a mkimage in the ubuntu touch source.. I used that. /system/extras/mkimage.. it needs to be compiled gcc mkimage.c -o mkimage -lz
then copy it cp ./system/extras/mkimage/mkimage ./out/host/linux-x86/bin no idea if this is required.
there are 2 bzr branch commands that need to be run.. google that.. Should be in Ubuntu Porting guide, but it's not. ubuntuappmanager library and some other library.
edit: run this inside of the ubuntu touch source folder/ubuntu
"bzr branch lphablet-extras/libhybris hybris" stupid smiles. =)
"bzr branch lplatform-api platform-api"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38745624
dont forget to run extract-files.sh and get-prebuild, etc.
source build/envsetup.sh
lunch (pick 14)
brunch tenderloin
I bring over ts_srv and that other ts program from jellybean to ubuntu and currently add commands to /system/etc/init.d/90userinit to get stuff running.. Lazy, I am.
Confused? That is my rough draft guide.
A dude by the name of tigeris, or something that started with tig.. he helped me a lot on ubuntu-phone on irc. So did another guy named.. omxy.. I think... I will find them. Gotta go,
EDIT TO POST. UNMOUNT PROC OUTSIDE OF CHROOT VIA USERINIT, AND NETWORK MANAGER WORKS WITHOUT FANOTIFY
My wife would really like someone to pick this work up.. She wants me to .. "come back to the family"....
Oh yeah.. Wifi does work.
To get wifi working..
do this.
ubuntu_chroot shell
mount -o proc proc /proc
network manager should now bomb.
this is for open security.
ifconfig wlan0 essid "your essid"
ifconfig wlan0 up
dhcpcd wlan0
dhcpcd taken from jellybean tar.gz from the bin folder.. So.. yeah.. but no network-manager without fanotify and some other daemons. be sure to take dhcpcd stuff from etc.
DONT RUN ubuntu_chroot all by itself.. It will crash.
ALSO you MUST unmount proc before shutting down or it will be stuck in mtab and you will have old stuff inside of the /proc folder, inside of chroot, or rather /data/ubuntu/proc..
Problems? Restore ubuntufs tarball in recovery.
I will release something sometime soon.. after testing 3.0.8.. but if you know how to do all this stuff, be my guest.
Why don't you create your own github and share with us?
I bet that there are a lot of devs who want to continue.
I am really interested but I kind of got lost when you said to get the files from Evervolv... Can you post links to be more specific please?
Thank you.
Its just githib.com/evervolv
Sent from my Touchpad using xda premium
Doing that tonight... By the end of tonight I will release something..
It will be 3 files.
The first will be the .zip file that has the actual /system folder
second is of course from ubuntu and is the rootfs.
Third will be a tarball you guys can extract once the tablet is booted that will just have touch and graphics working. You can use wifi if you run it from adb, and keep the tablet powered on.
I haven't even touched pixel ratio.
Oh.. a 4th file.. of the whole ubuntu touch folder.. cleaned and made proper.. Uploaded to google drive.. Or hell I guess I can look at github...

How to test
Code:
novacom boot mem:// < uImage.nsboot
To install, copy it to /boot (/dev/mmcblk0p13). It can also install itself if you put a copy of it on the SD card, and go Installer menu -> install uImage and navigate to it.
Screenshots are attached.
YouTube demo of a earlier version with only the boot working and a simpler menu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oQhSa4sqPU
Updates:
All OSes now boot (At least on my TP.)
Those which have had their kexec archives revised on GDrive since the first post are in italic.
Android 4.2
Android 4.1
Android 4.0
Android 2.3
Android 2.2
Android Recovery (included with all Android kexec archives)*
webOS
Ubuntu
Slackware
Arch Linux
Fedora
* The colors are still out of whack in recovery. It's mostly unneeded at this point with Built-In ADB support and zip installation, but I included it for those who want its more obscure or advanced features, or are more comfortable with its UI. Testing it specifically is appreciated because I don't have any plans to develop a test suite for it.
Compatibility list
Android ROMs
4.2
There is currently an issue with installing later Android 4.2 ROMs. The following 4.2 ROMs will install and boot:
Evervolv nightly 05-15-2013
The following 4.2 ROMs get stuck in a fairly serious bootloop (logcat shows at least surfaceflinger, mediaserver, and zygote segfaulting). I have tried different kernels.
CM 10.1 unofficial nightly 06-02-2013
Schzoid 2.0 nightly 04-23-2013
Other 4.2 ROMs are untested.
4.1
The following Android 4.1 ROMs have been tested and work:
JCSullins' CM 10 preview, 12-16-2012
Schzoid 1.2, 03-06-2013
4.0
The following Android 4.0 ROMs have been tested and work: CM 9 nightly, 01-06-2013
2.3
The following Android 2.3 ROMs have been tested: CM 7 Alpha 3.5
Issue: When the screen is woken up in CM7, nothing shows up on the display. The backlight does turn on.
2.2
The following Android 2.2 ROMs have been tested and work: my Froyo kang, version 0.4 and 0.3 (0.4 is on google drive on top of 0.3)
Native Linux
Ubuntu
The following Ubuntu releases have been tested and work: Ubuntu 13.04 final, Ubuntu 12.10 final.
Others are welcome to be tested, but I will probably not take issue with anything before 12.10 beta not working.
Arch Linux
Arch Linux boots, and seems to work. Wi-Fi has not been tested.
Slackware
Slackware boots and seems to work. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have not been tested.
Debian/Bodhi
I am unable to locate any tar.gz archives to test for this distribution, nor a kernel of any sort. If anyone wishes to step up and send one to me or even host it, I would be grateful and also I'd probably get it booting within a day.
Fedora
These haven't yet been tested. They are theorerically installable with the new "tar.gz to custom LV" feature, but I would need to find a way to free more space on my TP to install them (my media partition is currently about 10 GB, 6 GB used for music, and 2.5 GB used for testing files.
Thank you
Good Job! I will test it tomorrow.I have been looking forward to ArchLinuxArm for a long time.Thank you.
Looks really good, I'll give it a spin.
Nice thing. But how Do I add my existing cm Installation to it? And how to add the cwm recovery in bootlist?
I repaced moboot with this and now i Can only Access Ubuntu

After I made the webOS image, I noticed that it's a bit... finicky. Just reboot from nsboot main menu. Then try loading webOS again.
If you need to get to recovery mode, the way to do it is to reboot like that, holding down VOLUME UP.

If you installed CM to the logical volumes named /dev/store/cm-*, you need to back up and reinstall it from nsboot. As for booting CM recovery from nsboot, if you haven't done that yet, a feature I put in already lets you make .tar.gz archives from volumes (including Android ones.) I just enabled the extraction of them to Android volumes (used to only allow others), so you could use that to "move" your Android.
Minimum System Sizes to use for android partitions:
2.2 (froyo): 256MB
2.3 (gingerbread): 320MB
4.0 (ics): 320MB
4.1 (jellybean): 450MB
4.2 (jb mr1): 480MB
Step by step instructions:
Upgrade nsboot. Just released a new one. Either scp/adb it from a running OS or redo the install procedure except for the replace moboot part, after downloading it again.
Get the kexec tarchive for your android version onto the SD card. You could scp or adb push it. If needs be, find your old Android recovery image, and boot it via novacom:
Code:
novacom boot mem:// < uImage.ClockworkMod
Boot nsboot.
Go to Utilities - create volume tarchive.
Select "cm-system". Name the backup "System".
Repeat last two steps for "cm-data" if you want to keep your data partition. I don't recommend backing up "cache".
Go to Utilities - create volume set.
Name the new Volume Set depending on your Android/CM release: Use the names "android22", "android23", "android40", "android41", or "android42".
Format the new volume set: go to Utilites->format volume set, and select it. Click Confirm/OK.
After the set is created, go to Installer menu -> install .tar.gz to existing volume. Navigte to /mnt/media/nsboot/backups. You will find your two backups. Select "System" to restore to "androidXX-system", depending on the version you just created. Make sure you use a big enough size - see above table.
Repeat the last step for data, if you made such a backup.
You now need to find the kexec archive you copied to your SD card (it's mounted in /mnt/media.) Install it. If you chose the right volume set name, it will work.
Reboot or rescan boot items and you should see the Android version in your boot menu. Tell me if it doesn't work.
If it does work, go to utility menu -> delete volume set and select "cm" as your set. This will remove the old cm set, and leave the new androidXX one.
After that, if it did work, go to utility menu -> reclaim media space to get back any lost space for your media/sdcard partition.
Thank s it worked well. But i didnt get webos to run. I installed the webos kexec tar via install kexec tar to existing volume and of i wann Boot it, it hangs up and reboots nsbootloader

So when you guys who are having trouble with webOS try launching it, do you get to the screen that says 'please wait, booting...' or the HP logo that pulsates? Where does it reboot? I'm thinking I might have uploaded an old, non-workable tar file for that OS.
FYI: After testing every boot option, I discovered a problem with Android 4.1 (only 4.1). I'm looking into it.
EDIT: just uploaded a new kexec-webos.tar. I have things set up so the link remains the same. Redownload the new tarfile, and see if it works, it works on my end. Still working on fixing 4.1 - it's the only thing left, but most of you are probably using it (trying to.)
Sir,
Thanks for your reply.
But, I cannot get into recovery mode
I rebooted pressed POWER+VOLUME UP, nothing just going into nsboot.
I also tried pressing POWER+HOME+VOLUME UP, that is also the same.
please help.:crying::crying::crying:
I also replaced moboot with nsboot.

I have never seen this happen for real, and there is no way my code can just disable that combination. That said, I'm not leaving anyone out in the cold with a practically unusable TP.
If you have any ROMs installed, now is the time to use them to transfer needed files over to your sdcard.
Recovery mode works perfectly when I do it, I use that when I want to test a new version without installing it. I'll look in the moboot source and add a button to reboot directly into recovery. I'm also adding ADB support (if I can get kexec to tolerate the usage of the USB bus before the call, which I'm not sure.)
bootie (the TP first stage loader, comes before nsboot or moboot) transfers control over very, very quickly, so if you're pressing these buttons after you touch "Reboot", then don't. Though I don't seem to have issues if I do so, don't hold down Power unless you're force rebooting the TP or powering it on from the cold. Hold down Volume Up as you click reboot, keep it held down as you click "yes", and don't release it.
Also try powering off, then powering back on after 10 secs. Again, hold down Volume Up, then Power, don't switch over.
If you are really frantic, purposefully deleting the nsboot uImage (/mnt/boot/uImage.nsboot) will make your TouchPad boot to the "www.palm.com/ROM" screen, which is a more mandatory form of recovery mode. You could also "rename" or "move" moboot into nsboot, and you'll get moboot back.

Okay, try the volume up button. If that doesn't work, try holding power + volume up + home (rebooting it), ignoring the boot loop. I only said to delete one uImage... wait, uImages are the only files you deleted, not anything else in /boot, right?
Do you ever see the HP logo?
If you touched "boot.bin" (among certain other possible files in /boot) you'll probably need the debrick program. This isn't nsboot's fault... link to program is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010270
If you use that program, follow its instructions TO THE LETTER, if there is anything you need clarification on, ask here - I've never had to use it, but I've heard of it fixing TPs that don't even show anything on the LCD. That said, if something goes wrong with it, it has the opportunity to make the problem far, far worse.
castrwilliam thank you for your work

Is the pad fully charged? I would strongly suggest letting it charge for twenty four hours.
P.S. don't panic
